The low-mass X-ray binary source Cyg X–3 has been extensively observed from radio to ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray energies (i.e., energies >1015eV). In the radio, Cyg X–3 exhibits intense non-thermal outbursts (flares) and a double-sided relativistic jet morphology. Interestingly, at energies above 1 TeV (1012eV), the gamma-ray emission is highly variable and possibly correlated with the radio outbursts. This emission results primarily from the radiative decay of π°-mesons generated in inelastic collisions between relativistic nuclei (predominantly protons) and the surrounding matter. The observed flux of UHE gamma-rays from Cyg X–3 implies that Cyg X–3 is a localised accelerator of such particles.

We propose a model of Cyg X–3 wherein particles expelled by the source are accelerated by Shockwaves in the relativistically expanding jets. Intense flaring episodes then lead to time variations in the ambient particle flux which account for the observed features at UHE energies.

A recent study by Wylie et al. (2006) has revealed that s-process element abundances are enhanced relative to iron in both red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars of 47 Tuc. A more detailed investigation into s-process element abundances throughout the colour-magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc is vital in order to determine whether the observed enhancements are intrinsic to the cluster. This paper explores this possibility through observational and theoretical means. The visibility of s- and r-process element lines in synthetic spectra of giant and dwarf stars throughout the colour magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc has been explored. It was determined that a resolving power of 10 000 was sufficient to observe s-process element abundance variations in globular cluster giant-branch stars. These synthetic results were compared with the spectra of eleven 47 Tuc giant branch stars observed during the performance verification of the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. Three s-process elements (Zr, Ba and Nd) and one r-process element (Eu) were investigated. No abundance variations were found such that [X/Fe] = 0.0 ± 0.5 dex. It was concluded that this resolving power, R ∼ 5000, was not sufficient to obtain exact abundances but upper limits on the s-process element abundances could be determined.

The discrepancy between the observed and predicted flux of neutrinos from the Sun is well known. Past attempts at reconciling this difference have been unconvincing (Kuchowicz 1976, Rood 1978), and hence investigations in this area continue.

We propose to construct an optical interferometer to produce high resolution images by aperture synthesis. The interferometer, known as the Masked Aperture Pupil-Plane Interference Telescope (MAPPIT), will be mounted at the coudé focus of the Anglo-Australian Telescope. It will use a non-redundant aperture mask, together with closure phase methods developed for radio VLBI, to overcome the wavefront distortions which are introduced by atmospheric turbulence. By using the techniques of pupil-plane interferometry and wavelength dispersion, it is hoped that MAPPIT will have more sensitivity than many other interferometric imaging projects.

A white dwarf is a body of stellar mass, but of planetary dimensions. It is self luminous with a surface temperature that has been observed as high as 70,000 K or as low as 4,000 K. Because of its low surface area the star is far fainter than a main sequence star of the same colour; equally the light it emits is bluer than that from a main sequence star of similar luminosity. Figure 1 is the HR diagram from data obtained by the US Naval Observatory showing the dwarf and white dwarf sequences.

The observations in this paper were carried out as part of a program co-ordinated by the Occultation Section of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

On 6 August 1989 minor planet (9) Metis occulted the magnitude 8.7 star SAO 190531. The occultation was observed by two visual observers in Tasmania, and at one photoelectric and two visual sites in New Zealand. From the five chords obtained we have deduced an average cross-sectional diameter for this minor planet of 173.5 km at the time of the occultation. This is in good agreement with previous radiometric and polarimetric results.

Understanding the formation and evolution of the first stars and galaxies represents one of the most exciting frontiers in astronomy. Since the universe was filled with neutral hydrogen at early times, the most promising method for observing the epoch of the first stars is using the prominent 21-cm spectral line of the hydrogen atom. Current observational efforts are focused on the reionisation era (cosmic age t ~ 500 Myr), with earlier times considered much more challenging. However, the next frontier of even earlier galaxy formation (t ~ 200 Myr) is emerging as a promising observational target. This is made possible by a recently noticed effect of a significant relative velocity between the baryons and dark matter at early times. The velocity difference suppresses star formation, causing a unique form of early luminosity bias. The spatial variation of this suppression enhances large-scale clustering and produces a prominent cosmic web on 100 comoving Mpc scales in the 21-cm intensity distribution. This structure makes it much more feasible for radio astronomers to detect these early stars, and should drive a new focus on this era, which is rich with little-explored astrophysics.

In this paper the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy program at the University of Adelaide is described. VHE gamma rays with energies above ~5 × 1011eV are observed using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Results from the first three years observations at Woomera and the current upgrading of the telecope are described. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, is also introduced.

The existence of a group of magnetic white dwarfs with mean surface fields of between ~5 × 106 G and ~2 × 1O7 G is now firmly established through the discovery of Zeeman structure in hydrogen and helium lines (Angel et al. 1974, Liebert et al. 1975, Wickramasinghe et al. 1977, Martin & Wickramasinghe 1978, Liebert et al. 1977). There is considerable evidence from polarimetric studies for even higher fields in some white dwarfs (Angel 1977). Most of these stars are cool and show nearly continuous spectra or weak unidentified absorption features. The possibility of cyclotron absorption in white dwarfs was first discussed in connection with the infrared polarisation spectrum of one of these stars, Grw + 70°8247 (Kemp 1970). More recently the polarised white dwarf GD229 was found to have a rich optical spectrum with a strong feature at λ4185, for which cyclotron absorption has been mentioned as a possible origin (Angel 1977, Greenstein & Boksenberg 1977), though without supporting computations. In this letter we use models to investigate this possibility further.

We present the results of a program to develop techniques that enable high-resolution photometric measurements using modest research instruments available to small colleges, and then demonstrate those techniques in a pilot photometric project.

Using a 25 cm Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope and SBIG ST7E CCD camera, we develop techniques that enabled milli-magnitude photometric resolution. The pilot project studied five transits of the recently discovered gas giant planet orbiting HD 209458. We measured a flux drop of 1.46 ± 0.17% during the transit which corresponds to a planetary diameter of 1.39 ± 0.14 RJup, a transit period of 2h 48min ± 21min, and planet orbital inclination of 87.6 ± 1.3°. We determined the orbital period as 3.5234 ± 0.0026 days. These results agree well with other studies which used professional grade research instruments. We suggest a number of other challenging photometric research areas suitable for graduate and undergraduate investigation using equipment common to many small colleges.

Propagation effects on radio emission within the pulsar magnetosphere are discussed. Widely accepted pulsar models assume that a pulsar magnetosphere is populated with relativistic pair plasmas produced through electron–positron cascades by accelerated primary particles above the polar cap. Any radio emission produced well inside the light cylinder (the radius at which the rotation speed equals c) must propagate through the magnetospheric plasma and be subject to plasma dispersion effects such as refraction and absorption. The observed pulse profiles should contain some features that reflect the influence of the intervening plasma. I discuss particularly the absorption effect due to cyclotron resonance and its possible observational consequences.

Optical and X-ray spectroscopy indicate that the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 is seen through a cloud of gravitationally bound matter. We discuss an unstable negative feedback mechanism (originally proposed by Kotani et al. 1999), based on X-ray heating of this matter which controls the accretion rate when the source is in a low X-ray luminosity state. A deep minimum lasting ∼6 hours occurred during observations with the RXTE satellite over 1996 July 19–21. The shape of the X-ray pulses changed remarkably from before to after the minimum. These changes may be related to the transition from neutron star spin-down to spin-up which occurred at about the same time. Smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of the effect of adding matter with opposite angular momentum to an existing disk, show that it is possible for a number of concentric rings with alternating senses of rotation to co-exist in a disk. This could provide an explanation for the step-like changes in Ṗ which are observed in GX 1+4. Changes at the inner boundary of the disk occur at the same timescale as that imposed at the outer boundary. Reversals of material torque on the neutron star occur at a minimum in LX.

We investigate the diversity in the sizes and average surface densities of the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) gas discs in $\sim$280 nearby galaxies detected by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). We combine the uniformly observed, interferometric H i data from pilot observations of the Hydra cluster and NGC 4636 group fields with photometry measured from ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared imaging surveys to investigate the interplay between stellar structure, star formation, and H i structural parameters. We quantify the H i structure by the size of the H i relative to the optical disc and the average H i surface density measured using effective and isodensity radii. For galaxies resolved by $>$$1.3$ beams, we find that galaxies with higher stellar masses and stellar surface densities tend to have less extended H i discs and lower H i surface densities: the isodensity H i structural parameters show a weak negative dependence on stellar mass and stellar mass surface density. These trends strengthen when we limit our sample to galaxies resolved by $>$2 beams. We find that galaxies with higher H i surface densities and more extended H i discs tend to be more star forming: the isodensity H i structural parameters have stronger correlations with star formation. Normalising the H i disc size by the optical effective radius (instead of the isophotal radius) produces positive correlations with stellar masses and stellar surface densities and removes the correlations with star formation. This is due to the effective and isodensity H i radii increasing with mass at similar rates while, in the optical, the effective radius increases slower than the isophotal radius. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous studies and demonstrate that with WALLABY we can begin to bridge the gap between small galaxy samples with high spatial resolution H i data and large, statistical studies using spatially unresolved, single-dish data.

Magnetohydrodynamic devices that can accelerate plasmas to speeds of the order of hundreds of kilometres per second have been designed and built for nearly forty years. Up to the time of writing, however, the theory for such devices has been exclusively non-relativistic. In this paper we derive the special relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (SRMHD) equations and use them to obtain the relativistic, magnetic nozzle equation which describes the production of jet flows with speeds approaching the speed of light.We obtain analytic solutions to this equation and show that, in principle, magnetic field gradients can accelerate a plasma to highly relativistic speeds. We also show that the exit kinetic energy, EK, of a particle is given by the equation EK = m0C2FR, where m0 is the rest mass of the particle and CFR is the fast magnetosonic speed at the start of the flow.

The relativistic nozzle differs in a number of ways from the non-relativistic case.A non-relativistic nozzle has a relatively symmetric converging/diverging shape, while a highly relativistic nozzle converges in the usual manner, but diverges, in an abrupt fashion, at the very end of the nozzle. The gentle divergence of non-relativistic nozzles causes the exit plasma densities and magnetic fields of the flow to have values that are small relative to their values at the start of the nozzle. The abrupt divergence of a highly relativistic nozzle implies that, for a less than perfect nozzle, the exit values of the mass density and the magnetic field strength are comparable to their initial values. This unexpected dichotomy in behaviour may have future application in understanding the ‘radio-loud’ and ‘radio-quiet’ relativistic jets that are produced from astrophysical sources.

We present a detailed analysis of nearly two decades of optical/UV and X-ray data to study the multi-wavelength pre-explosion properties and post-explosion X-ray properties of nearby SN2023ixf located in M101. We find no evidence of precursor activity in the optical to UV down to a luminosity of $\lesssim$$1.0\times10^{5}\, \textrm{L}_{\odot}$, while X-ray observations covering nearly 18 yr prior to explosion show no evidence of luminous precursor X-ray emission down to an absorbed 0.3–10.0 keV X-ray luminosity of $\sim$$6\times10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Extensive Swift observations taken post-explosion did not detect soft X-ray emission from SN2023ixf within the first $\sim$3.3 days after first light, which suggests a mass-loss rate for the progenitor of $\lesssim$$5\times10^{-4}\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ or a radius of $\lesssim$$4\times10^{15}$ cm for the circumstellar material. Our analysis also suggests that if the progenitor underwent a mass-loss episode, this had to occur $>$0.5–1.5 yr prior to explosion, consistent with previous estimates. Swift detected soft X-rays from SN2023ixf $\sim$$4.25$ days after first light, and it rose to a peak luminosity of $\sim10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ after 10 days and has maintained this luminosity for nearly 50 days post first light. This peak luminosity is lower than expected, given the evidence that SN2023ixf is interacting with dense material. However, this might be a natural consequence of an asymmetric circumstellar medium. X-ray spectra derived from merging all Swift observations over the first 50 days are best described by a two-component bremsstrahlung model consisting of a heavily absorbed and hotter component similar to that found using NuSTAR, and a less-absorbed, cooler component. We suggest that this soft component arises from cooling of the forward shock similar to that found in Type IIn SN2010jl.

We investigate the role of asymmetries in the line spread function of the 2-degree field (2dF) spectrograph and the variations in these asymmetries with the CCD, the plate, the time of observation, and the fibre. A data-reduction pipeline is developed that takes these deformations into account for the calibration and cross-correlation of the spectra. We show that, using the emission lines of calibration lamp observations, we can fit the line spread function with the sum of two Gaussian functions representing the theoretical signal and a perturbation of the system. This model is then used to calibrate the spectra and generate templates by downgrading high-resolution spectra. Thus, we can cross-correlate the observed spectra with templates degraded in the same way. Our reduction pipeline is tested on real observations and provides a significant improvement in the accuracy of the radial velocities obtained. In particular, the systematic errors that were as high as ∼20 km s−1 when applying the AAO reduction package 2DFDR are now reduced to ∼5 km s−1. Even though the 2dF spectrograph is to be decommissioned at the end of 2005, the analysis of archival data and previous studies could be improved by the reduction procedure we propose here.

In his studies of the temperature fluctuation in the solar photosphere P. R. Wilson came to the conclusion that, in order to explain Edmond’s r.m.s. intensity fluctuation distribution against heliocentric angle, one is led, using two dimensional solutions for the equation of radiative transfer, to the existence of a sharp temperature fluctuation of about 660 K r.m.s. at a depth of 250 km below τ5000 = 0.03 and that this temperature fluctuation decreases sharply in the next 70 km. There also seems to be an indication that there exists a second temperature fluctuation maximum at a depth of approximately 100 km below the first one.

The U.K. 1.2 metre Schmidt Telescope acquired its first full aperture objective prism in 1975. This was a very low dispersion prism (2400 Å/mm at 4300 Å) which has been found to be particularly useful in searching for faint QSO’s.

The occultation of a star by a planet of similar brightness allows accurate determination of the planet’s radius R, mean density ρ and of the ratio T/μ, where T and μ are the planetary atmospheric temperature and mean molecular weight. These quantities are important for the formation theory of the planet and of its atmosphere (see e.g. Öpik).
