In this paper the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy program at the University of Adelaide is described. VHE gamma rays with energies above ~5 × 1011eV are observed using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Results from the first three years observations at Woomera and the current upgrading of the telecope are described. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, is also introduced.

The observations in this paper were carried out as part of a program co-ordinated by the Occultation Section of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

On 6 August 1989 minor planet (9) Metis occulted the magnitude 8.7 star SAO 190531. The occultation was observed by two visual observers in Tasmania, and at one photoelectric and two visual sites in New Zealand. From the five chords obtained we have deduced an average cross-sectional diameter for this minor planet of 173.5 km at the time of the occultation. This is in good agreement with previous radiometric and polarimetric results.

The discrepancy between the observed and predicted flux of neutrinos from the Sun is well known. Past attempts at reconciling this difference have been unconvincing (Kuchowicz 1976, Rood 1978), and hence investigations in this area continue.

The Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) uses adaptive spherical panels to achieve a huge collecting area for radio waves. In this paper, we try to explore the optimal parameters for the curvature radius of spherical panels and the focal distance by comparison of the calculated beam patterns. We show that to get the best beam shape and maximum gain, the optimal curvature radius of panels is around 300 m, and a small shift in the focal distance of a few cm is needed. The aperture efficiency can be improved by ~10% at 3 GHz by this small shift. We also try to optimise the panel positioning for the best beam, and find that panel shifts of a few mm can improve the beam pattern by a similar extent. Our results indicate that accurate control of the feed and panel positions to the mm level is very crucial for the stability of FAST's observational performance.

A recent study by Wylie et al. (2006) has revealed that s-process element abundances are enhanced relative to iron in both red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars of 47 Tuc. A more detailed investigation into s-process element abundances throughout the colour-magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc is vital in order to determine whether the observed enhancements are intrinsic to the cluster. This paper explores this possibility through observational and theoretical means. The visibility of s- and r-process element lines in synthetic spectra of giant and dwarf stars throughout the colour magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc has been explored. It was determined that a resolving power of 10 000 was sufficient to observe s-process element abundance variations in globular cluster giant-branch stars. These synthetic results were compared with the spectra of eleven 47 Tuc giant branch stars observed during the performance verification of the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. Three s-process elements (Zr, Ba and Nd) and one r-process element (Eu) were investigated. No abundance variations were found such that [X/Fe] = 0.0 ± 0.5 dex. It was concluded that this resolving power, R ∼ 5000, was not sufficient to obtain exact abundances but upper limits on the s-process element abundances could be determined.

The very low background observed from Antarctica in a window from about 2·25 to 2·45 μm can be exploited as a way of making deep near-IR surveys over wide areas of sky. Imaging surveys using the entire window can cover large areas of sky to limits of around K = 20, and can be used to study galaxy evolution and to search for high-redshift quasars, dust-obscured quasars and brown dwarfs. It is also possible to make spectroscopic surveys in this window. The window includes molecular hydrogen emission and CO absorption in galactic sources, and can also be used to search for emission lines such as Hα in high-redshift star-forming galaxies.

The ideas and work presented in this paper date almost entirely from 1977 when the original paper was submitted. The referee suggested that we check out several other strong northern candidates before publication, but upon resubmission several years later the editor noted that as it was now accepted that DA,F white dwarfs did not exist there was little point in publishing the paper. In view of the fact that our preprint was the main stimulus for this status change and reference to this work remains ‘1977 unpublished’, we would like the paper to be published and thus complete the historical record.

Observations of some of the stars considered by Weidemann as the most likely DA,F candidates are discussed together with theoretical computations of white dwarfs and subdwarfs. The reddest stars BPM 23251 and G 82–23 are shown to be K subdwarfs and L 532–81 (EG62) is a DA white dwarf. It is suggested that the DA,F stars, if they exist at all, are extremely rare and that the metal abundance of the DA sequence may be less than 10–74 of the solar abundance.

The β Cephei variables are a group of short period pulsating variables of early spectral type for which no satisfactory physical driving mechanism has yet been discovered. Further it is not clear what form of pulsation these stars are undergoing. The existence of a beat phenomenon and a phase of spectral line broadening is well established in some of these stars. This extends to observed spectral line doubling in three stars, BW Vul, σ Sco and 12 Lac. Because of the difficulty in explaining these phenomena with purely radial oscillations, Ledoux (1951) first suggested the possibility of non-radial oscillations. Other stars in the group, γ Peg, δ Cet, #x03BE;’ CMa and β Cep have approximately sinusoidal velocity and light curves with little indication of spectral line broadening. For these there is probably no a priori observational need to look beyond purely radial oscillations. It is of course conceivable that different modes of oscillation are present in different members of the β Cephei group. However, if line profiles are calculated for various proposed oscillation modes and compared with the observations, it may be possible to eliminate some suggestions and hence limit the search for an instability mechanism.

Video recordings of images of binary stars at the focus of a 0.36m telescope have been used to select images recorded in instants of good seeing. The selected images have been analysed to give separations and position angles for the binary systems which are in good agreement with values predicted from previous observations. In these exploratory observations it has been shown that separations of 0.9 arcseconds can be measured with an accuracy of ~2% and position angles to ~1–2 degrees when the average seeing was ~1.3 arcseconds. These observations demonstrated that the diffraction limit of the telescope could be reached when the seeing was a factor of 2–3 greater than it. A binary with three magnitudes difference in the brightness of its components has been measured with comparable accuracy although difficulties are anticipated for binaries with components closer than ~2 arcseconds with this magnitude difference. The limiting magnitude is determined by the need to limit exposure times of individual frames to be comparable with or less than the atmospheric coherence time.

We present a detailed analysis of nearly two decades of optical/UV and X-ray data to study the multi-wavelength pre-explosion properties and post-explosion X-ray properties of nearby SN2023ixf located in M101. We find no evidence of precursor activity in the optical to UV down to a luminosity of $\lesssim$$1.0\times10^{5}\, \textrm{L}_{\odot}$, while X-ray observations covering nearly 18 yr prior to explosion show no evidence of luminous precursor X-ray emission down to an absorbed 0.3–10.0 keV X-ray luminosity of $\sim$$6\times10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Extensive Swift observations taken post-explosion did not detect soft X-ray emission from SN2023ixf within the first $\sim$3.3 days after first light, which suggests a mass-loss rate for the progenitor of $\lesssim$$5\times10^{-4}\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ or a radius of $\lesssim$$4\times10^{15}$ cm for the circumstellar material. Our analysis also suggests that if the progenitor underwent a mass-loss episode, this had to occur $>$0.5–1.5 yr prior to explosion, consistent with previous estimates. Swift detected soft X-rays from SN2023ixf $\sim$$4.25$ days after first light, and it rose to a peak luminosity of $\sim10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ after 10 days and has maintained this luminosity for nearly 50 days post first light. This peak luminosity is lower than expected, given the evidence that SN2023ixf is interacting with dense material. However, this might be a natural consequence of an asymmetric circumstellar medium. X-ray spectra derived from merging all Swift observations over the first 50 days are best described by a two-component bremsstrahlung model consisting of a heavily absorbed and hotter component similar to that found using NuSTAR, and a less-absorbed, cooler component. We suggest that this soft component arises from cooling of the forward shock similar to that found in Type IIn SN2010jl.

Primitive meteorites contain small amounts of presolar minerals that formed in the winds of evolved stars or in the ejecta of stellar explosions. Silicon carbide is the best studied presolar mineral. Based on its isotopic compositions it was divided into distinct populations that have different origins: Most abundant are the mainstream grains which are believed to come from 1.5–3 M⊙ AGB stars of roughly solar metallicity. The rare Y and Z grains are likely to come from 1.5–3 M⊙ AGB stars as well, but with subsolar metallicities (0.3–0.5 times solar). Here we report on C and Si isotope and trace element (Zr, Ba) studies of individual, submicrometer-sized SiC grains. The most striking results are: (1) Zr and Ba concentrations are higher in Y and Z grains than in mainstream grains, with enrichments relative to Si and solar of up to 70 times (Zr) and 170 times (Ba), respectively; (2) For the Y and Z grains there is a positive correlation between Ba concentrations and amount of s-process Si. This correlation is well explained by predictions for 2–3 M⊙ AGB stars with metallicities of 0.3–0.5 times solar. This confirms low-metallicity stars as most likely stellar sources for the Y and Z grains.

It is generally agreed that T-Tauri stars are very young stars of solar mass which are still engaged in the process of gravitational contraction toward the main sequence (Ambartzumian, Herbig).

Some self-absorbed synchrotron sources have, a small but observable degree of circular polarization rc near the absorption turnover (Roberts et al. 1975). The simplest interpretation of the circular component is in terms of the intrinsic degree of circular polarization of synchrotron radiation (Legg and Westfold 1968); this provides a relation (Roberts et al. 1975)

Radio, optical and X-ray observations of a complete flux-limited sample of southern bright radio sources have been analysed to investigate beaming and orientation effects in the different wavebands. We conclude that, in addition to beamed optical and radio components, there is evidence for anisotropic X-ray emission.

A method for calculating the resultant probability distributions of orbital elements for a small body (a comet, asteroid or meteoroid) after a gravitational encounter with a planet is described. This technique incorporates the frequency of such encounters so that the chance of attaining a certain new orbit per unit time is derived. The use of this technique is then illustrated by considering the effect of Jupiter upon the orbits of near-parabolic comets with perihelia near that planet (q = 5.2 AU) and in the inner solar system (q = 1.0 AU), with prograde (i = 10°) and retrograde (i = 170°) paths. As indicated by previous authors the prograde comets are more easily captured into short-period (P< 20 yr) and intermediate-period (20<P<200 yr) orbits; however, in contradiction to most previous work but in agreement with the results of Stagg and Bailey (submitted to Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc.) it is found that the comets with smaller perihelia, rather than those with perihelia near Jupiter, have higher capture probabilities. This is apparently due to the fact that a small deflection only is needed to sufficiently decelerate a comet onto a smaller orbit if it makes a near-perpendicular crossing of Jupiter’s path, whereas a larger deflection (to achieve a large orbital change) is needed if the paths are near-parallel. With comparatively modest amounts of computer time this method may be used to calculate the relative capture probabilities as a function of i and q for all values of interest, and is thus a useful precursor to integrations following orbital evolution, since it indicates the most likely avenues whereby shorter-period comets are derived from the near-parabolic flux.

The research now under way with the real-time 275 km Parkes-Tidbinbila interferometer is used as a guide to the initial science to be undertaken with the 319 km Australia Telescope (AT) Long Baseline Array. On the other hand, it is risky to guess at the new science likely to be attempted with the 6 km AT Compact Array at Culgoora; instead the potential that has been built into this array is discussed and a selection of basic questions in astrophysics is posed as a guide to significant science that might yield to new observers on a fresh instrument under the southern skies. In conclusion two questions are probed: Can discoveries be made by users of national facilities? Does the AT cross into new domains in the phase space of observations?

Print copies of the Palomar Sky Survey (PSS) are widely used for optical identifications of radio sources north of δ = -33°.

‘History is Bunk’ said Henry Ford. He was exaggerating but it is well recognized that the connection between history and truth is tenuous. Even very recent history dependent on human memory is notoriously unreliable despite the intention of the historian to tell the truth.

In radio astronomy we are fortunate in having a dedicated historian-astronomer by the name of Woody Sullivan who has spent years in interviewing and reinterviewing astronomers to find out the real facts about the early years of the subject. Because of Sullivan’s work (e.g. Sullivan 1988) and because so many of my former colleagues have written histories of the period I felt very doubtful about adding my piece to the saga when asked to do so. However, I did accept the invitation to do so after I had read a statement about radio astronomy written by our usually very well informed Minister for Science, Barry Jones (Jones 1987). This statement which I shall quote later is an example of what we may call popular history.

The existence of a group of magnetic white dwarfs with mean surface fields of between ~5 × 106 G and ~2 × 1O7 G is now firmly established through the discovery of Zeeman structure in hydrogen and helium lines (Angel et al. 1974, Liebert et al. 1975, Wickramasinghe et al. 1977, Martin & Wickramasinghe 1978, Liebert et al. 1977). There is considerable evidence from polarimetric studies for even higher fields in some white dwarfs (Angel 1977). Most of these stars are cool and show nearly continuous spectra or weak unidentified absorption features. The possibility of cyclotron absorption in white dwarfs was first discussed in connection with the infrared polarisation spectrum of one of these stars, Grw + 70°8247 (Kemp 1970). More recently the polarised white dwarf GD229 was found to have a rich optical spectrum with a strong feature at λ4185, for which cyclotron absorption has been mentioned as a possible origin (Angel 1977, Greenstein & Boksenberg 1977), though without supporting computations. In this letter we use models to investigate this possibility further.

We have obtained long slit spectra of 3C 67 and 3C 277.1 with the HST/STIS spectrograph. We present our preliminary results on the diagnostic emission line ratios along the radio source axes in 3C 67 and 3C 277.1.
