The coalescence of two Langmuir waves, L and L′, produces emission at twice the plasma frequency in type II and type III solar radio bursts. The analysis of the coalescence process is usually simplified by assuming the head-on approximation, where the wavevectors of the coalescing waves satisfy kL′ ≈ −kL, corresponding to the two Langmuir waves meeting head on. However, this is not always a valid approximation, particularly when the peak of the Langmuir spectrum lies at small wavenumbers, for narrow band spectra, and for spectra with broad angular ranges. Realistic Langmuir wave spectra are used to investigate the effects of relaxing the head-on approximation.

This review is concerned mainly with the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays and the progress that has been made since the Tenth International Conference on Cosmic Rays (Calgary, June 1967), My aim is to set out some of the advances in the basic theories; to indicate why certain disagreements between convection-diffusion theory and observations (noted in Webber’s invited review at Calgary) are to be expected; and to indicate some of the currently emerging areas of interest.

Using two volume-limited Main galaxy samples of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 , we explore influences of galaxy interactions on AGN activity. It is found that in the faint volume-limited sample, paired galaxies have a slightly higher AGN fraction than isolated galaxies, whereas in the luminous volume-limited sample, an opposite trend can be observed. The significance is <1σ. Thus, we do not observe strong evidence that interactions or mergers likely trigger the AGN activity.

SV Cen is an eclipsing variable of the Beta Lyrae type and is especially known by its rapid changes of period. The system was studied photometrically and spectroscopically by Irwin and Landolt (1972). According to the previous study by O’Connell (1951) the system exhibits a 34-year periodicity.

The observations and simulations have revealed that large-scale magnetic field and outflows can exist in the inner regions of an advection-dominated accretion disc where the resistive diffusion may also be important. In the present paper, the roles of large-scale magnetic field and outflows in the structure of resistive advection-dominated accretion discs are explored by assuming that the accretion flow is radially self-similar. In the non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation, the results show that the angular velocity is always sub-Keplerian when both the outflow and the large-scale magnetic field are taken into account. A stronger toroidal field component leads to faster rotation, while the disc rotates with faster rate if the vertical field component is weaker. The increase of magnetic diffusivity causes the infall velocity to be close to Keplerian velocity. Although the previous studies in the ideal MHD approximation have shown that the disc temperature decreases due to the vertical field component, we find that the effect of vertical field component on the temperature of a resistive disc depends on the magnetic diffusivity. When the magnetic diffusivity is high, the more efficient mechanism for decreasing the disc temperature can be the outflows, and not the large-scale magnetic field. In such a limit of the magnetic diffusivity, the components of the large-scale magnetic field enhance the gas temperature. The increase of temperature can lead to heating and acceleration of the electrons and help us to explain the origin of phenomena such as the flares in Sgr A*. On the other hand, the infall velocity in such a limit rises as the temperature increases, and therefore the surface density falls to too low values. Any change in the density profile can alter the structure and the emitted spectrum of disc.

The basic observational evidence for helium-burning red giants in open clusters has been given elsewhere, and I shall give here only a summary and then describe in more detail new results for one cluster, NGC 2477.

The three objects Tau X−1, Cyg X−l and GX3+1 are the most prominent discrete X-ray objects in the sky at photon energies of ≃ 100 keV.

Extensive observations of the spectra of the decametric radio bursts for Jupiter have been made by Riihimaa, principally at frequencies between 18 and 23 MHz and with frequency resolution of 50 kHz. These showed much fine frequency-time structure in the bursts but pointed to the need for higher frequency resolution and greater antenna sensitivity. This paper reports the results of observations made of the Jupiter bursts between February and April, 1972, using the Llanherne low frequency telescope (Ellis,).

A search for Type Ia supernovae at cosmological distances is being undertaken in an attempt to exploit their standard candle property to constrain the mass density of the universe. We describe the rationale for such a program, the observational approach and strategy taken, and the progress made to date. The science that is being generated by the project in additional to supernova detection is also discussed briefly.

The Natural Science Museum of Turin is the owner of a small but nice collection of meteorites, partly obtained by means of direct acquisition during the last 30 years, and partly inherited from the rather old collection of the University of Turin. This collection was partially forgotten for the last 50 years, and after 1936 the collection became almost invisible. In the last 30 years the meteorite samples were tightly packaged and retained in the basement of the museum building. Currently a new listing of the meteorite collection is in progress and almost finished, in which every sample is described, measured and weighed. For each sample the authors acquired high resolution images and examined historical documentations. Images were acquired with a desktop scanner, which was found to be an ideal tool for this purpose. A classification based on most famous meteorite catalogues is coupled to each description. About eighty samples (and probably a new meteorite, not described until now) will be depicted in the new catalogue, which hopefully will be published during 2009. The authors want to inform the international community that Turin the Museum holds an important collection containing almost all of the Piedmont meteorites (e.g. MOTTA DI CONTI, CERESETO, ALESSANDRIA), some Italian meteorites of considerable historical importance (TRONZANO, ALFIANELLO, ASSISI, SIENA), together with a selection of American and Eastern European samples.

The past few decades have seen the burgeoning of wide-field, high-cadence surveys, the most formidable of which will be the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) to be conducted by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. So new is the field of systematic time-domain survey astronomy; however, that major scientific insights will continue to be obtained using smaller, more flexible systems than the LSST. One such example is the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) whose primary science objective is the optical follow-up of gravitational wave events. The amount and rate of data production by GOTO and other wide-area, high-cadence surveys presents a significant challenge to data processing pipelines which need to operate in near-real time to fully exploit the time domain. In this study, we adapt the Rubin Observatory LSST Science Pipelines to process GOTO data, thereby exploring the feasibility of using this ‘off-the-shelf’ pipeline to process data from other wide-area, high-cadence surveys. In this paper, we describe how we use the LSST Science Pipelines to process raw GOTO frames to ultimately produce calibrated coadded images and photometric source catalogues. After comparing the measured astrometry and photometry to those of matched sources from PanSTARRS DR1, we find that measured source positions are typically accurate to subpixel levels, and that measured L-band photometries are accurate to $\sim50$ mmag at $m_L\sim16$ and $\sim200$ mmag at $m_L\sim18$. These values compare favourably to those obtained using GOTO’s primary, in-house pipeline, gotophoto, in spite of both pipelines having undergone further development and improvement beyond the implementations used in this study. Finally, we release a generic ‘obs package’ that others can build upon, should they wish to use the LSST Science Pipelines to process data from other facilities.

We present a brief overview and preliminary measure of the Local Group velocity, using the PSCz survey together with its recently completed extension into the Galactic plane, the Behind The Plane (BTP) survey. The addition of the BTP has increased the total sky coverage from 84% to 93%, drastically reducing the systematic uncertainty in the direction of the local gravitational pull caused by incomplete sky coverage. We present methods that self-consistently determine the acceleration in the presence of redshift distortions. Preliminary results suggest that the dipole converges within the survey limiting depth. There is a large, but only marginally significant, component to the dipole arising at 180–200 h–1 Mpc.

Observations of extremely high brightness temperatures in astrophysical objects imply that coherent emission processes must be occurring. An emission process may be coherent due to an inverted energy distribution leading to maser action, or due to bunching of particles in a region less than or of order of the wavelength of the radiation. Calculations of emission by bunches have generally used either a fluid model, e.g. Buschauer and Benford (1976), or a single-particle approach which requires all particles to have the same velocity, e.g. Saggion (1975) uses elements of both. In this paper we investigate gyromagnetic emission by bunches using a single-particle approach which includes the effects of differing particle velocities on the radiation.

We adopt two- and three-body nuclear forces derived at the next-to-next-to-leading-order in the framework of effective chiral perturbation theory to calculate the equation of state of β-stable neutron star matter using the Brueckner–Hartree–Fock many-body approach. We use the recent optimized chiral two-body nuclear interaction at next-to-next-to-leading-order derived by Ekström et al. and two different parametrizations of the three-body next-to-next-to-leading-order interaction: the first one is fixed to reproduce the saturation point of symmetric nuclear matter while the second one is fixed to reproduce the binding energies of light atomic nuclei. We show that in the second case the properties of nuclear matter are not well determined whereas in the first case various empirical nuclear matter properties around the saturation density are well reproduced. We finally calculate various neutron star properties and in particular the mass-radius and mass-central density relations. We find that the adopted interactions based on a fully microscopic framework, are able to provide an equation of state which is consistent with the present data of measured neutron star masses.

Cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation, when compared to the observed Tully–Fisher relation, suggest a low mass to light (M/L) ratio for the stellar component in spirals. We show that a number of 'bottom-light' initial mass functions (IMFs) suggested independently in the literature, do imply M/L ratios as low as required, at least for late type spirals (Sbc–Sc). However the typical M/L ratio, and correspondingly the zero point of the Tully–Fisher relation, is expected to vary considerably with Hubble type.

Bottom-light IMFs tend to have a metal production in excess of what is typically estimated for spiral galaxies. Suitable tuning of the IMF slope and mass limits, post-supernova fallback of metals onto black holes or metal outflows must then be invoked, to reproduce the observed chemical properties of disk galaxies.

We present the highest resolution and sensitivity $\sim$$1.4\,$GHz continuum observations of the Eridanus supergroup obtained as a part of the Widefield Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) pre-pilot observations using the ASKAP. We detect 9461 sources at 1.37 GHz down to a flux density limit of $\sim$$0.1$ mJy at $6.1''\times 7.9''$ resolution with a median root mean square of 0.05 mJy beam$^{-1}$. We find that the flux scale is accurate to within 5 % (compared to NVSS at 1.4 GHz). We then determine the global properties of eight Eridanus supergroup members, which are detected in both radio continuum and neutral hydrogen (HI) emission, and find that the radio-derived star formation rates (SFRs) agree well with previous literature. Using our global and resolved radio continuum properties of the nearby Eridanus galaxies, we measure and extend the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) to lower stellar masses and inferred SFRs than before. We find the resolved IRRC to be useful for: (1) discriminating between active galactic nuclei and star-forming galaxies; (2) identifying background radio sources; and (3) tracing the effects of group environment pre-processing in NGC 1385. We find evidence for tidal interactions and ram-pressure stripping in the HI, resolved spectral index and IRRC morphologies of NGC 1385. There appears to be a spatial coincidence (in projection) of double-lobed radio jets with the central HI hole of NGC 1367. The destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by merger-induced shocks may be driving the observed WISE W3 deficit observed in NGC 1359. Our results suggest that resolved radio continuum and IRRC studies are excellent tracers of the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution and will be possible on larger sample of sources with upcoming ASKAP radio continuum surveys.

There are different classes of pulsating stars in the H-R diagram. While many of those classes are undisputed, some remain a mystery such as the objects historically called ‘Maia variables’. Whereas the presence of such a class was suggested seven decades ago, no pulsational driving mechanism is known that could excite short-period oscillations in these late B to early A-type stars. Alternative hypotheses that would render the reports of variability of those stars erroneous have been proposed such as incorrect effective temperatures, binarity or rapid rotation, but no certain conclusions have been reached yet. Therefore, the existence of these variables as a homogeneous class of pulsating star is still under discussion. Meanwhile, many new candidates of these variables have been claimed especially by using photometric observations of space telescopes. In this study, we examined 31 objects that are alleged members of this hypothetical group and carried out detailed spectroscopic and photometric analyses to test the proposed hypotheses for their cause of variability. The $T_\textrm{eff}$, $\log g$, $v \sin i$, and chemical abundances of the targets were determined and the TESS photometric data were examined. As a result, we found that most of these targets are located inside the $\delta$ Scuti, $\beta$ Cephei, or SPB star instability strips, a few show evidence for binarity and others for rapid rotation. We give arguments that none of the apparently rapid pulsations in our targets is caused by a star outside any known instability strip. By extrapolation, we argue that most stars proposed as pulsators outside well-established instability domains are misclassified. Hence there is no sufficient evidence justifying the existence of a class of pulsating stars formerly known as the ‘Maia variables’.

This paper uses population synthesis to investigate the possible origin of isolated millisecond pulsars as born from the coalescence of a neutron star and a white dwarf. Results show that the galactic birth rate of isolated millisecond pulsars is likely to lie between 5.8×10−5 yr−1 and 2.0×10−4 yr−1, depending on critical variables, such as the stability of mass transfer via the Roche lobe and the value of kick velocity. In addition to this, this paper estimates that the solar mass of isolated millisecond pulsars can range from 1.5 and 2.0 Mʘ, making them more massive than other ‘normal’ pulsars. Finally, the majority of isolated millisecond pulsars in our simulations have spin periods ranging from several to 20 ms, which is consistent with previous observations.
