In this paper we study homotopy classes of deformations and their properties under weak convergence. As an application, we give an analytic proof (in two and three dimensions) of the existence of infinitely many local minimisers for a displacement boundary-value problem from finite elasticity, posed on a nonconvex domain, under the constitutive assumption of polyconvexity.

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit regular monoid to have a uniquely unit regular, idempotent separating cover.

We investigate critical points of the free energy Eε(u) of the Cahn–Hilliard model over the unit square under the constraint of a mean value ü. We show that for any fixed value ü in the so-called spinodal region and to any mode of an infinite class, there are critical points of Eε(u) having the characteristic symmetries of that mode provided ε > 0 is small enough. As ε tends to zero, these critical points have singular limits forming characteristic patterns for each mode. Furthermore, any singular limit is a stable critical point of E0(u)). Our method consists of a global bifurcation analysis of critical points of the energy Eε(u) where the bifurcation parameter is the mean value ü.

We consider the nonlinear elliptic problem ± (Δu + λu) + f(x, u) = h(x) in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, where Ω is a bounded smooth domain in ℝN, λ is near the first eigenvalue and h(x) is orthogonal to the first eigenfunction. We give some conditions of existence of positive solutions and of multiple solutions in terms of the primitive of f with respect to u.

A nonlocal variational problem modelling phase transitions is studied in the framework of Young measures. The existence of global minimisers among functions with internal layers on an infinite tube is proved by combining a weak convergence result for Young measures and the principle of concentration-compactness. The regularity of such global minimisers is discussed, and the nonlocal variational problem is also considered on asymptotic tubes.

In this paper we show that if the decay of nonzero ƒ is fast enough, then the perturbation Dirichlet problem −Δu + u = up + ƒ(z) in Ω has at least two positive solutions, where

a bounded C1,1 domain S = × ω Rn, D is a bounded C1,1 domain in Rm+n such that D ⊂⊂ S and Ω = S\D. In case ƒ ≡ 0, we assert that there is a positive higher-energy solution providing that D is small.

We define the rational de Rham cohomology associated with the generalised confluent hypergeometric functions. Purity of the cohomology is proved and an explicit ℂ-basis of the nontrivial cohomology is computed.

This idea is due to Meyers [26] and Maly [22], and the main contribution here is contained in Lemma 4.1, where a more efficient extension operator than the one in [22] (and in [14]) is used. The properties of this extension operator are in a certain sense best possible.

The purpose of this paper is to study boundary value problems for elliptic pseudodifferential operators which originate from the problem of existence of Markov processes in probability theory, generalising some results of our previous work. Our approach has a great advantage of intuitive interpretation of sufficient conditions for the unique solvability of boundary value problems in terms of Markovian motion. In fact, we prove that if a Markovian particle moves incessantly both by jumps and continuously in the state space, not being trapped in the set where no reflection phenomenon occurs, then our boundary value problem is uniquely solvable in the framework of Sobolev spaces of LP style.

We consider initial and boundary-value problems modelling the vibration of a plate with piezoelectric actuator. The usual models lead to the Bernoulli–Euler and Kirchhoff plate equations with right-hand side given by a distribution concentrated in an interior curve. We obtain regularity results which are stronger than those obtained by simply using the Sobolev regularity of the right-hand side. By duality, we obtain new trace regularity properties for the solutions of plate equations. Our results provide appropriate function spaces for the control of plates provided with piezoelectric actuators.

We consider certain n-dimensional operators of Hardy type and we study their boundedness in These spaces were introduced by M. J. Carro and J. Soria and include weighted Lp, q spaces and classical Lorentz spaces. As an application, we obtain mixed weak-type inequalities for Calderón—Zygmund singular integrals, improving results due to K. Andersen and B. Muckenhoupt.

We are interested in reflection symmetric (x↦–x) evolution problems on the infinite line. In the systems which we have in mind, a trivial ground state loses stability and bifurcates into a temporally oscillating, spatial periodic pattern. A famous example of such a system is the Taylor-Couette problem in the case of strongly counter-rotating cylinders. In this paper, we consider a system of coupled Kuramoto–Shivashinsky equations as a model problem for such a system. We are interested in solutions which are slow modulations in time and in space of the bifurcating pattern. Multiple scaling analysis is used in the existing literature to derive mean-field coupled Ginzburg–Landau equations as approximation equations for the problem. The aim of this paper is to give exact estimates between the solutions of the coupled Kuramoto–Shivashinsky equations and the associated approximations.

We discuss existence and lowersemicontinuity for clusters of materials minimising an energy given by a collection of norms φij on the interfaces between regions Ri and Rj. Following Ambrosio and Braides, we exhibit a problem for which the triangle inequality holds but existence fails, and we state a new sufficient condition for lowersemicontinuity, which may be necessary.

In this paper, we study the Orr–Sommerfeld problem on a finite interval. It is shown that the eigenfunctions and associated functions form a Bari basis in a suitable Hilbert space if the unperturbed velocity profile u is sufficiently smooth. To this end, the Orr–Sommerfeld problem is considered as a bounded perturbation of a certain self-adjoint spectral problem.

The cohomology of the classifying space of the gauge group of the nontrivial SO(3) bundle over S2 has no torsion.

Let λε be a Dirichlet eigenvalue of the ‘periodically, rapidly oscillating’ elliptic operator –∇·(a(x/ε)∇) and let ∇ be a corresponding (simple) eigenvalue of the homogenised operator –∇·(A∇). We characterise the possible limit points of the ratio (λε–λ)/ε as ε→0. Our characterisation is quite explicit when the underlying domain is a (planar) convex, classical polygon with sides of rational or infinite slopes. In particular, in this case it implies that there is often a continuum of such limit points.

We make some remarks about rank-one convex and polyconvex functions on the set of all real n × n matrices that vanish on the subset Kn consisting of all conformal matrices and grow like a power function at infinity. We prove that every non-negative rank-one convex function that vanishes on Kn and grows below a power of degree n/2 must vanish identically. In odd dimensions n ≧ 3, we prove that every non-negative polyconvex function that vanishes on Kn must vanish identically if it grows below a power of degree n; while in even dimensions, such polyconvex functions can exist that also grow like a power of half-dimension degree.

It is shown how to associate eigenvectors with a meromorphic mapping defined on a Riemann surface with values in the algebra of bounded operators on a Banach space. This generalises the case of classical spectral theory of a single operator. The consequences of the definition of the eigenvectors are examined in detail. A theorem is obtained which asserts the completeness of the eigenvectors whenever the Riemann surface is compact. Two technical tools are discussed in detail: Cauchy-kernels and Runge's Approximation Theorem for vector-valued functions.

We consider the one-dimensional, nonlocal, evolution equation derived by De Masi et al. (1995) for Ising systems with Glauber dynamics, Kac potentials and magnetic field. We prove the existence of travelling fronts, their uniqueness modulo translations among the monotone profiles and their linear stability for all the admissible values of the magnetic field for which the underlying spin system exhibits a stable and metastable phase.

We present a simple probability approach for establishing a gradient estimate for a solution of an elliptic equation on a compact Riemannian manifold with convex boundary, or on a noncompact complete manifold. Our method can also be applied to derive a similar gradient estimate for a nonlinear parabolic equation, and an abstract gradient estimate for a Markov semigroup.
