The concept of a “magnetar” was proposed mainly because of two factors. First, the X-ray luminosity of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs) is larger than the rotational energy loss rate (Lx > Ėrot), and second, the magnetic field strength calculated from “normal method” is super strong. It is proposed that the radiation energy of magnetar comes from its magnetic fields. Here it is argued that the magnetic field strength calculated through the normal method is incorrect at the situation Lx > Ėrot, because the wind braking is not taken into account. Besides, the “anti-magnetar” and some other X-ray and radio observations are difficult to understand with a magnetar model.

Instead of the magnetar, we propose a “quarctar”, which is a crusted quark star in an accretion disk, to explain the observations. In this model, the persistent X-ray emission, burst luminosity, spectrum of AXPs and SGRs can be understood naturally. The radio-emitting AXPs, which are challenging the magnetar, can also be explained by the quarctar model.

Imaging debris discs in the L′-band (3.8 μm) is a difficult task. Quasi-static speckles from imperfect optics prevail below 1″ whereas background emission is the dominant noise source beyond that separation and is much larger than at shorter wavelengths. We demonstrate here the potential of the newly commissioned AGPM coronograph on VLT/NaCo combined with advanced star and sky subtraction technique based on Principal Component Analysis, and we analyze the morphology of the β Pictoris disc.

Collecting a sample of 50 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and 44 broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s), we show that the theoretical maximum starburst line derived by Kewley et al. can separate well BLS1s from NSL1s on the BPT diagrams, and the [N II]λ 6584/Hα ratio increases along the list from NLS1s to BLS1s. We suggest that: (1) they have a sequence from low metallicities to high metallicities between NLS1s and BLS1s; (2) with regard to the “star-froming sequence” of Kewley et al. who noted that it forms a tight sequence from low metallicities to high metallicities, the sequence may be connected to the NLS1-BLS1 sequence of “active galactic nucleus (AGN)” sequences.

The mid-infrared (MIR) extinction law in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) at four IRAC bands is derived using the data of the Spitzer/SAGE Program. The derived mean extinctions are A[3.6]/AKs = 0.68±0.03, A[4.5]/AKs = 0.97±0.03, A[5.8]/AKs = 0.54±0.04, and A[8.0]/AKs = 0.58±0.07. The results show that: (1) The extinctions at [3.6], [5.8] and [8.0] of the LMC consist a flat curve, similar to that of the Milky Way (MW) predicted by the interstellar grain model at Rv = 5.5; (2) The extinction at [4.5] is clearly higher than the other three bands, which may be caused by the additional absorption of the 4.27μm CO2 ice and/or the 4.67μm CO ice in the LMC molecular clouds; (3) As far as individual sightlines are concerned, the MIR interstellar extinction law Aλ/AKs in the LMC varies with sightlines as the MW does.

In this contribution we present the results of an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a ΛCDM cosmology. The simulation used was performed with the cosmological code MASCLET (Quilis et al. 2004). Galaxies have been identified in the simulation outputs by means of an adaptive friends of friends algorithm applied to the star particles. To give light to our virtual galaxies we have assigned a spectrum to each stellar particle using the MIUSCAT stellar population models (Vazdekis et al. 2012; Ricciardelli et al. 2012).

Young stellar clusters were identified on deep near-infrared images of 6 nearby, grand-design spirals observed with HAWK-I/VLT. A 90% completeness was reached for cluster complexes with MK = −11.5m (corresponding to masses around 104 M⊙) while the linear resolution was around 40 pc. The distribution of clusters in the (H-K)–(J-H) diagrams revealed two groups of clusters. Comparing with Starburst99 model tracks, the groups could be interpreted as one old population of clusters with low extinction and one consisting of young clusters with visual extinction as high as AV = 7m. The clear separation between the two groups suggests a rapid expulsion of dust from the young clusters.

Monte-Carlo models were made assuming a cluster distribution function g(Mc, τ) = Mc−a τ−γ where Mc and τ are cluster mass and age, respectively. Fitting such models to the observed NIR color distributions, it was concluded that the cluster mortality had to be significant with γ = 0.8-1.0. Further, the star formation phase of clusters has to extend over several Myr. Young clusters have high extinctions at least the first 3 Myr but then lose their reddening over a period of around 5 Myr, depending on the exact evolutionary tracks used.

We present the detection of stars with infrared (IR) excesses attributed to circumstellar debris disks from the WISE All-Sky Survey at the WISE 12 and 22 μm bandpasses (W3 and W4, respectively). Excess flux at these wavelengths is significant because it traces material in the regions of terrestrial planet formation. We searched for debris disks by cross-matching Hipparcos main sequence stars with the All-Sky Data Release from WISE and seeking excess flux at W3 and W4. Our sample is confined to a volume of 75 pc around the sun, and outside the galactic plane (|b|>5°). Debris disk-bearing stars were identified as 95%-confidence outliers in 2MASS/WISE color distributions, after checking for erroneous photometry and contamination from unrelated nearby objects.

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration have carried out joint searches in LIGO and Virgo data for periodic continuous gravitational waves. These analyses range from targeted searches for gravitational-wave signals from known pulsars, for which precise ephemerides from radio or X-ray observations are used in matched filters, to all-sky searches for unknown neutron stars, including stars in binary systems. Between these extremes lie directed searches for known stars of unknown spin frequency or for new unknown sources at specific locations, such as near the galactic center or in globular clusters. Recent and ongoing searches of each type will be summarized, along with prospects for future searches using data from the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors.

By using our one-epoch EVN+Merlin data and some archived VLBA data, we present the radio properties of 9 ultra-high-energy synchrotron peak BL Lacs (UHBLs) selected as all BL Lacs with log (νpeak/Hz)>20 from Nieppola et al. . Our results support that UHBLs might be the less Doppler beamed versions of HBLs with similar jet power.

Future prospects in observational galaxy evolution are reviewed from a personal perspective. New insights will especially come from high-redshift integral field kinematic data and similar low-redshift observations in very large and definitive surveys. We will start to systematically probe the mass structures of galaxies and their haloes via lensing from new imaging surveys and upcoming near-IR spectroscopic surveys will finally obtain large numbers of rest frame optical spectra at high-redshift routinely. ALMA will be an important new ingredient, spatially resolving the molecular gas fuelling the high star-formation rates seen in the early Universe.

By reprocessing the NICMOS coronagraphic archive using improved PSF subtraction methods, we have obtained new images of 5 debris disks, all previously unseen using classical PSF subtractions. Three of the disks are edge on and two appear to be ring like, one of which is extremely asymmetric.

Their stellar hosts are nearby, young F and G type stars (40-90 pc, 12–30 Myr), including one that is a close analog to the young sun at roughly the age at which terrestrial planets were assembling. This is a 25% increase in the sample of debris disks seen in scattered light. Analysis and modeling of the disk geometries is in process. Given these systems' youth, proximity, and brightness (V = 7.2 to 8.5), these will be superb targets for investigating planet formation, and are perfect targets for studies with GPI, SPHERE and JWST.

The distinction between the high-magnetic field pulsars (HBPs, thought to be mainly rotation-powered) and magnetars (commonly believed to be powered by their super-strong magnetic fields) has been recently blurred with the discovery of magnetar-like activity from the HBP J1846–0258 in the SNR Kes 75. What determines the spin properties of a neutron star at birth and its manifestation as a magnetar-like or more classical pulsar is still not clear. Furthermore, although a few studies have suggested very massive progenitors for magnetars, there is currently no consensus on the progenitors of these objects. To address these questions, we examine their environments by studying or revisiting their securely associated SNRs. Our approach is to: 1) infer the mass of their progenitor stars through X-ray spectroscopic studies of the thermally emitting supernova ejecta, and 2) investigate the physical properties of their hosting SNRs and ambient conditions. We here highlight our detailed studies of two SNRs: G292.2–0.5, associated with the HBP J1119–6127, and Kes 73, associated with the AXP 1E 1841–045, and summarize the current view of the other (handful) HBP/magnetar-SNR associations.

This is a brief introduction to the closing discussion of the IAU Symposium 295, ‘The Intriguing Life of Massive Galaxies’, that was held in Beijing from August 27 through 31, 2012. The discussion was focused on only four hot items, namely 1) the redshift evolution of the size of passively evolving galaxies, 2) the evolution with redshift of the specific star formation rate, 3) quenching of star formation in galaxies and dry merging, and 4) the IMF.

The family of unidentified infrared emission features, consisting of discrete and plateau features in the mid-infrared, are now observed in distant galaxies. A significant fraction of the total energy output of some infrared galaxies is emitted in these features. Comparisons of these features with those observed in the circumstellar and interstellar media suggest that these organic species are synthesized and ejected by evolved stars. Models of possible chemical structures of the carrier of these features are discussed.

We propose that a magnetar could be formed during the core collapse of massive stars or coalescence of two normal neutron stars, through collecting and inheriting the magnetic fields magnified by hyperaccreting disk. After the magnetar is born, its dipole magnetic fields in turn have a major influence on the following accretion. The decay of its toroidal field can fuel the persistent X-ray luminosity of either an SGR or AXP; however the decay of only the poloidal field is insufficient to do so.

Motivated by the wealth of past, existing, and upcoming X-ray and gamma-ray missions, we have developed the first public database of high-energy observations of all known Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs): http://www.physics.umanitoba.ca/snr/SNRcat. The catalogue links to, and complements, other existing related catalogues, including Dave Green's radio SNRs catalogue. We here highlight the features of the high-energy catalogue, including allowing users to filter or sort data for various purposes. The catalogue is currently targeted to Galactic SNR observations with X-ray and gamma-ray missions, and is timely with the upcoming launch of X-ray missions (including Astro-H in 2014). We are currently developing the existing database to include an up-to-date Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe)-dedicated webpage, with the goal to provide a global view of PWNe and their associated neutron stars/pulsars. This extensive database will be useful to both theorists to apply their models or design numerical simulations, and to observers to plan future observations or design new instruments. We welcome input and feedback from the SNR/PWN/neutron stars community.

We present preliminary results of a detailed chemical abundance analysis for a sample of solar-type stars known to exhibit excess infrared emission associated with dusty debris disks. Our sample of 28 stars was selected based on results from the Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems (FEPS) Spitzer Legacy Program, for the purpose of investigating whether the stellar atmospheres have been polluted with planetary material, which could indicate that the metallicity enhancement in stars with planets is due to metal-rich infall in the later stages of star and planet formation. The preliminary results presented here consist of precise abundances for 15 elements (C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni) for half of the stars in our sample. We find that none of the stars investigated so far exhibit the expected trend of increasing elemental abundance with increasing condensation temperature, which would result from the stars having accreted planetary debris. Rather, the slopes of linear least-squares fits to the abundance data are either negative or consistent with zero. In both cases, our results may indicate that, like the Sun, the debris disk host stars are deficient in refractory elements, a possible signature of terrestrial and/or gas giant planet formation.

We quantitatively explore in a unbiased way the evolution of dust attenuation up to z ≈ 4 as a function of galaxy properties. We have used one of the deepest datasets available at present, in the GOODS-N field, to select a star forming galaxy sample and robustly measure galaxy redshifts, star formation rates, stellar masses and UV restframe properties. Our main results can be summarized as follows: i) we confirm that galaxy stellar mass is a main driver of UV dust attenuation in star forming galaxies: more massive galaxies are more dust attenuated than less massive ones; ii) strikingly, we find that the correlation does not evolve with redshift: the amount of dust attenuation is the same at all cosmic epochs for a fixed stellar mass; iii) this finding explains why and how the SFR–AUV relation evolves with redshift: the same amount of star formation is less attenuated at higher redshift because it is hosted in less massive galaxies; iv) combining our finding with results from line emission surveys, we confirm that line reddening is larger than continuum reddening, at least up to z ≈ 1.5; v) given the redshift evolution of the mass-metallicity relation, we predict that star forming galaxies at a fixed metal content are more attenuated at high redshift. Finally, we explored the correlation between UV dust attenuation and the spectral slope: vi) the correlation is evolving with redshift with star forming galaxies at lower redshift having redder spectra than higher redshift ones for the same amount of dust attenuation.
