We present the results of a study of secular resonances in a binary star system and their effects on the formation of terrestrial planets. The systems of our interest are binaries with moderate separations (i.e., smaller than 40 AU) where planets revolve around one of the stars. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the appearance and evolution of secular resonances in systems with two giant planets. Results indicate that the perturbation of the binary companion suppresses secular resonances and they do not play a significant role on the formation and orbital architecture of terrestrial planets. Unlike in our solar system where the secular resonance of Saturn confines the formation of terrestrial planets to regions interior to its location, in a binary star, terrestrial planets can form interior and exterior to this resonance. We present details of our simulations and discuss the implications of their results.

We employed data from the VISTA near-infrared YJKS survey of the Magellanic System to analyse the light curves of Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). Using the T2Cs identified by the OGLE IV survey and Gaia mission, we built up a sample of about 330 pulsators belonging to both galaxies. For all these objects we obtained accurate intensity-averaged magnitudes in the YJKS bands by means of a template-fitting technique. We complemented our near-infrared data with optical photometry from the literature to calculate period-luminosity and period-Wesenheit relations for a variety of different bands and colour combinations and separately for the different T2C subclasses (BL Herculis, W Virginis, peculiar W Virginis, RV Tauri). These relations, calibrated with the LMC distance modulus, were tested using T2Cs belonging to Galactic globular clusters. We thus calculated the distances of 22 clusters and compared them with the literature values, mainly based on RR Lyrae stars, finding good agreement within 1 σ and dispersion of the order of 0.3 – 0.5 kpc, depending on the adopted period-luminosity/period-Wesenheit relation.

The Perseus arm has a gap in Galactic longitudes (l) between 50° and 80° where the arm has little star formation activity. To understand the gap, we conducted VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) astrometry and analyzed archival H <SC>I</SC> data. We report on parallax and proper motion results from four star-forming regions, of which G050.28–00.39 and G070.33+01.59 are associated with the gap. Perseus-arm sources G049.41+00.32 and G050.28–00.39 lag relative to a Galactic rotation by 77 ± 17 km s-1 and 31 ± 10 km s-1, respectively. The noncircular motion of G049.41+00.32 cannot be explained by the gravitational potential of the arm. We discovered rectangular holes with integrated brightness temperatures less than 30 K arcdeg in l vs. VLSR of the H <SC>I</SC> data. Also, we found extended H <SC>I</SC> emission on one side of the Galactic plane when integrating the H <SC>I</SC> data over the velocity range covering the hole. G049.41+00.32 and G050.28–00.39 are moving toward the emission. The Galactic H <SC>I</SC> disk at the same velocity range showed an arc structure, indicating that the disk was pushed from the lower side of the disk. All the observational results might be explained by a cloud collision with the Galactic disk.

The Intensity Interferometry technique consists of measuring the spatial coherence (visibility) of an object via its intensity fluctuations over a sufficient range of telescope separations (baselines). This allows us to study the size, shape and morphology of stars with an unprecedented resolution. Cherenkov telescopes have a set of characteristics that coincidentally allow for Intensity Interferometry observations: very large reflective surfaces, sensitivity to individual photons, temporal resolution of nanoseconds and the fact that they come in groups of several telescopes. In the recent years, the MAGIC Collaboration has developed a deadtime-free Intensity Interferometry setup for its two 17 m diameter Cherenkov telescopes that includes a 4-channel GPU-based real-time correlator, 410–430 nm filters and new ways of splitting its primary mirrors into submirrors using Active Mirror Control (AMC). With this setup, MAGIC can operate as a long-baseline optical interferometer in the baseline range 40–90 m, which translates into angular resolutions of 0.5-1 mas. Additionally, thanks to its AMC, it can simultaneously measure the zero-baseline correlation or, by splitting into submirrors, access shorter baselines under 17 m in multiple u-v plane orientations. The best candidates to observe with this technique are relatively small and bright stars, in other words, massive stars (O, B and A types). We will present the science cases that are currently being proposed for this setup, as well as the prospects for the future of the system and technique, like the possibility of large-scale implementation with CTA.

Alfvénic waves are regarded as an important process in understanding coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, and the fractionization of low first-ionization-potential (FIP) elements. Recently, significant progresses have been made in the detection of propagating Alfvénic waves in the solar chromosphere using two different methods: the imaging method and the spectroscopic method. The imaging method detects Alfvénic waves that oscillate in the direction perpendicular to the line of sight, and the spectroscopic method, those that oscillates in the line of sight direction. We have applied the spectroscopic method to the imaging spectral data taken by the FISS on GST at Big Bear. As a result, we detected a number of propagating Alfvénic wave packets, and found that there are two distinct groups: three-minute period waves, and ten-minute period waves.

Our knowledge of stellar evolution relies on constraints provided by measurements of the physical stellar properties such as the mass, effective temperature, and radii. The most fundamental parameter, the stellar mass, is rarely available or has a low accuracy, providing poor constraints on the stellar structure and evolution. Observing binary stars combining astrometry and spectroscopy offers the unique opportunity to measure very precise masses. In addition, double-lined spectroscopic binaries provide independent distance measurements with an extreme accuracy, allowing to test the Gaia parallaxes and the period-luminosity (P-L) relations. I will show that masses and distances with an accuracy level as high as 0.05% can be obtained by combining interferometric and spectroscopic observations for different types of binary systems, i.e. binary Cepheids, eclipsing and non-eclipsing binaries.

The investigation of the metal-poor tail in the Galactic bulge provides unique information on the early Milky Way assembly and evolution. A chemo-dynamical analysis of 17 very metal-poor stars (VMP, [Fe/H < – 2.0]) selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey was carried out based on Gemini/GRACES spectra. The chemistry suggests that the majority of our stars are very similar to metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo. Orbits calculated from Gaia EDR3 imply these stars are brought into the bulge during the earliest Galactic assembly. Most of our stars have large [Na,Ca/Mg] abundances, and thus show little evidence of enrichment by pair-instability supernovae. Two of our stars (P171457, P184700) have chemical abundances compatible with second-generation globular cluster stars, suggestive of the presence of ancient and now dissolved globular clusters in the inner Galaxy. One of them (P171457) is extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H < – 3.0]) and well below the metallicity floor of globular clusters, which supports the growing evidence for the existence of lower-metallicity globular clusters in the early Universe. A third star (P180956, [Fe/H]∼ – 2) has low [Na,Ca/Mg] and very low [Ba/Fe] for its metallicity, which are consistent with formation in a system polluted by only one or a few low-mass supernovae. Interestingly, its orbit is confined to the Galactic plane, like other very metal-poor stars found in the literature, which have been associated with the earliest building blocks of the Milky Way.

Stellar SiO masers are found in the atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with several maser transitions observed around 43 and 86 GHz. At least 28 SiO maser stars have been detected within ∼2 pc projected distance from Sgr A* by the Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). A subset of these masers have been studied for several decades and form the basis of the radio reference frame that anchors the reference frame for infrared stars in the Galactic Center (GC). We present new observations of the GC masers from VLA and ALMA. These new data combined with extant maser astrometry provide 3D positions, velocities, and acceleration limits. The proper motions and Doppler velocities are measured with unprecedented precision for these masers. We further demonstrate how these measurements may be used to trace the stellar and dark matter mass distributions within a few pc of Sgr A*.

Continental silicate weathering and seafloor carbonate precipitation are key steps in the carbonate-silicate cycle to draw down CO2. Contrary to the classic understanding of negative feedback, silicate weathering can exhibit positive feedback at high temperatures. Taking into account this positive feedback, the compensation depth (CCD) in exoplanet oceans becomes shallower, implying a potential instability in the carbonate-silicate cycle at high temperatures.

The MAximum-entropy ReconStruction (MARS) method is a free-form strong-lensing (SL) reconstruction algorithm, which adopts the maximum cross-entropy as a regularization. MARS shows remarkable convergence of multiple images in both source (∼0.”02) and image planes (∼0.”05 – 0.”1) while suppressing spurious fluctuations. Although the reconstruction requires a large number of free parameters exceeding ∼19,000, our implementation through PyTorch can obtain the reconstruction within hours. From our test using the publicly available synthetic clusters, we have verified that the reconstructed radial mass profiles are consistent with the truth within 1 percent. This makes MARS one of the best-performing SL reconstruction methods. We apply MARS to the six Hubble Frontier Fields clusters and present new mass reconstruction results. We also reconstruct a mass model of Abell 2744 using both weak-lensing (WL) and SL data from the JWST observations, with the largest dataset of Abell 2744, including 286 SL multiple images and ∼350 arcmin−2 WL constraints.

We present in the following the introductory talk on “Hazardous asteroids and the Hera mission”, made during the round table on Space Awareness. It reminds the context of our awareness for near-Earth objects, the characterisation of risk, current international surveillance programmes, and mitigation measures in particular with space missions, and last, a rendez-vous with Apophis to note in your agenda for 2029.

We present the trigonometric parallax, proper motion, and structure of three methanol masers from the Southern Hemisphere Parallax Interferometric Radio Astrometry Legacy Project (SπRALS). All three masers have better than 5% parallax accuracy, which we attribute to the new inverse MultiView calibration technique.

We have made a lot of progress in the study of the MW. In spite of this, much of our Galaxy remains unknown, and amazing breakthroughs await to be made in the exploration of the far side of the Galaxy. Focussing on the Galactic extinction horizon problem with current surveys like the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey (VVV) and its extension VVVX, the extinction horizon is a fundamental difficulty, and it is my intention here to reveal how profound is our ignorance, and also to try to suggest ways for improvement with future near-IR Galactic surveys.

We present mean horizontal branch absolute magnitudes and iron abundances for a sample of 39 globular clusters. These quantities were calculated in an unprecedented homogeneous fashion based on Fourier decomposition of ligt curves of RR Lyrae cluster members. Zero points for the luminosity calibrations are discussed. Our photometrically derived metallicities and distances compare very well with spectroscopic determinations of [Fe/H] and accurate distances obtained using Gaia and Hubble Space Telescope data. The need to distinguish between the results for RRab and RRc stars for a correct evaluation of the MV–[Fe/H] relation is discussed. For RRab stars, the relation is non-linear, and the horizontal branch structure plays a significant role. For RRc stars, the relation remains linear and tight, and the slope is very shallow. Hence, the RRc stars seem better indicators of the parental cluster distances. Systematic time-series CCD imaging performed over the last 20 years enabled to discover and classify 330 variables in our sample of globular clusters.

Gravitationally lensed supernovae (SNe) are rare and valuable probes of astrophysics and cosmology. While only seven lensed SNe have currently been discovered, these numbers are predicted to increase by orders of magnitudes with future transient surveys such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). These proceedings describe the ongoing live search with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), including the discovery of SN ‘Zwicky’: a lensed SN found in a remarkably low-mass lens galaxy. Finally, we look ahead at predictions for detecting lensed SNe with LSST.

MHD avalanches involve small, narrowly localized instabilities spreading across neighbouring areas in a magnetic field. Cumulatively, many small events release vast amounts of stored energy. Straight cylindrical flux tubes are easily modelled, between two parallel planes, and can support such an avalanche: one unstable flux tube causes instability to proliferate, via magnetic reconnection, and then an ongoing chain of like events. True coronal loops, however, are visibly curved, between footpoints on the same solar surface. With 3D MHD simulations, we verify the viability of MHD avalanches in the more physically realistic, curved geometry of a coronal arcade. MHD avalanches thus amplify instability across strong solar magnetic fields and disturb wide regions of plasma. Contrasting with the behaviour of straight cylindrical models, a modified ideal MHD kink mode occurs, more readily and preferentially upwards in the new, curved geometry. Instability spreads over a region far wider than the original flux tubes and than their footpoints. Consequently, sustained heating is produced in a series of ‘nanoflares’ collectively contributing substantially to coronal heating. Overwhelmingly, viscous heating dominates, generated in shocks and jets produced by individual small events. Reconnection is not the greatest contributor to heating, but is rather the facilitator of those processes that are. Localized and impulsive, heating shows no strong spatial preference, except a modest bias away from footpoints, towards the loop’s apex. Remarkable evidence emerges of ‘campfire’ like events, with simultaneous, reconnection-induced nanoflares at separate sites along coronal strands, akin to recent results from Solar Orbiter. Effects of physically realistic plasma parameters, and the implications for thermodynamic models, with energetic transport, are discussed.

We use the MIDE3700 code to find effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g) via the Barbier Chalonge Divan (BCD) method for 222 B-type stars in the ESO archive in preparation for their inclusion as an extension to the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL). We find agreement of Δ log Teff ∼0.1σ and Δ log g ∼0.25σ of our results with a sample of literature stars. We populate a previously bare region of the XSL Kiel diagram in the ranges 9000 ≤ Teff ≤ 23000 K and 2.8 ≤ log g ≤ 4.0 dex, and thereby extend the lower age limit of XSL stellar population models by up to a factor ∼10 at [Fe/H] = −1.2 dex, and by a factor ∼2 at Solar metallicity.

A complete list of combinations of the rates of asteroid perihelia and nodes and the corresponding fundamental frequencies of planets, giving rise to secular resonances and involving up to 4 frequencies, is known from the previous work, while for the resonances with 6 frequencies a systematically derived comprehensive list is given here for the first time. There are 28 divisors in the theory of degree up to 4, not all of which can give rise to resonances, while at degree 6 there are (at least) 33 such possibly resonant frequency combinations.

Mapping the secular resonances by plotting the resonant lines in the phase space of proper elements or of secular frequencies, possibly also against the background of known asteroids, enables to straightforwardly identify resonances causing large long periodic variations of asteroid orbital elements, resonances that interact with known families, those that bound the dynamically distinct regions, deplete or disturb asteroids in these regions, etc.

Rare systems with multiple sources strongly lensed by a single galaxy provide the most robust way to explore the geometry of the Universe and to study the inner mass structure of lens galaxies. We present here a study of the SDSS J0100+1818 deflector, analyzing its total and baryonic mass distributions. The system comprises an ultra-massive early-type galaxy, surrounded by ten multiple images of three background sources. Exploiting high-resolution HST photometry and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopy we conduct a strong lensing analysis with the software GLEE to reconstruct the complex surface brightness distributions of the background sources over approximately 7200 HST pixels. These results are presented in our recent paper, Bolamperti et al. (2023). Finally, we present some preliminary results from new VLT/MUSE observations, that will allow us to build a new strong lensing+dynamics joint model and measure the values of the total matter density and of the cosmological constant parameters, Ωm and ΩΛ.
