In the past decade, submillimeter surveys have been employed to define samples of gravitationally-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z ∼ 1 − 4. These extreme objects () appear to form stars prodigiously at rates of . Using all-sky Planck and WISE surveys, and wide-area Herschel surveys, we have identified the PASSAGES sample, with some of the rarest hyper-luminous IR galaxies ever discovered. We have found that their globally-averaged star formation surface densities are always sub-Eddington, typically by an order of magnitude. This may suggest that our understanding of how radiation pressure from massive stars disrupts the collapse of molecular clouds (thereby quenching star formation) is flawed—or simply that smaller physical resolutions are necessary. With the aid of lensing, we can now capture the source-plane distribution of star formation at ∼ 100pc scales, letting us identify isolated super-Eddington regions where quenching is occurring.

Long-period variables are bright, evolved red giant stars showing periodic photometric changes due to stellar pulsation. They follow one or more period-luminosity and period-age relations, which make them highly promising distance indicators and tracers of young and intermediate-age stellar populations. Such a potential is especially interesting in view of the massive amount of data delivered by modern large-scale variability surveys. Crucially, these applications require a clear theoretical understanding of pulsation physics in connection with stellar evolution. Here, I describe an ongoing effort from our collaboration dedicated to the modelling of stellar pulsation in evolved stars, and how this work is impacting our capability of investigating long-period variables and exploiting them for other astrophysical studies. Furthermore, I present our ongoing work aimed at assessing the potential of semi-regular variables, an often neglected sub-type of long-period variables, to be distance indicators complementary to their better-known, more evolved counterparts, the Mira variables.

Adequate stellar atmosphere models are prerequisite to derive robust stellar parameters from spectroscopic analyses. I will briefly review recent results obtained with the Potdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmosphere code, which is applicable to all types of hot stars. Using multi-wavelength observations including the UV, we analyzed large samples of massive stars at various metallicities, gaining important insights on their cosmic role and the feedback to their environment.

A recent extension of PoWR allows to compose the model atmosphere from two zones. A rapidly rotating star, e.g., might possess a cooler equatorial region with a slow wind, and two polar cones with higher photospheric temperature and fast wind. For two examples of rapidly rotating O-type stars, we demonstrate that such model can reproduce wind-line profiles which otherwise would stay inconsistent. Fast rotation, which prevails in particular at low metallicities, thus might bias empirically derived parameters, having implications for feedback as well as for angular-momentum losses of SN and GRB progenitors.

In this work, the secular evolution of exoplanetary systems is investigated, when the variability of the masses of celestial bodies is the leading factor of dynamical evolution. The masses of the parent star and the planets change due to the particles leaving the bodies and falling on them. At the same time, bodies masses are assumed to change isotropically at different rates. The law of mass change is considered to be known and given function of time. The relative motions of the planets are investigated by the methods of the canonical perturbation theory in the absence of resonances. It is assumed that the orbits of the planets do not intersect. Evolutionary equations in analogues of Poincaré variables (Λi, λi, ξi, ηi, pi, qi) are obtained and used to study the K2-3 exoplanetary system. All analytical and numerical calculations are performed with the aid of the Wolfram Mathematica.

Upcoming large-scale spectroscopic surveys such as WEAVE and 4MOST will provide thousands of spectra of massive stars, which need to be analysed in an efficient and homogeneous way. Studies on massive stars are usually based on samples of a few hundred objects which pushes current spectroscopic analysis tools to their limits because visual inspection is necessary to verify the spectroscopic fit.

The novel spectroscopic analysis pipeline takes advantage of the statistics that large samples provide, and determines the model error to account for imperfections in stellar atmosphere codes due to simplified, wrong or missing physics. Considering observational plus model uncertainties improve spectroscopic fits. The pipeline utilises the entire spectrum rather than selected diagnostic lines allowing a wider range of temperature from B to early O stars to be analysed. A small fraction of stars like peculiar, contaminated or spectroscopic binaries require visual inspection, which are identified through their larger uncertainties.

The gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112 was the first discovered system where a background quasar is lensed by a galaxy cluster instead of a single galaxy. We use the 14.5-year r-band light curves together with the recently measured time delay of the fourth brightest quasar image (Munõz et al. (2022)) and the mass model from Forés-Toribio et al. (2022) to study the microlensing effect in this system. We constrain the quasar accretion disk size to light-days at 2407Å in the restframe which is compatible with most previous estimates. We also infer the fraction of mass in stars at the positions of the quasar images: $${\alpha _A} = 0.058_{ - 0.032}^{ + 0.024},{\alpha _B} = 0.048_{ - 0.014}^{ + 0.032},{\alpha _C} = 0.018_{ - 0.018}^{ + 0.015}$$ and $${\alpha _D} = 0.008_{ - 0.008}^{ + 0.033}$$. The stellar fraction estimates are reasonable for intracluster medium although the stellar fractions at images A and B are slightly larger, suggesting the presence of a near undetected galaxy.

In the last five years, the number of periodic variable stars has increased by two million. We used the ZTF DR2 data to find and build a catalog that includes 780,000 periodic variable stars. These periodic variable stars were classified into 11 types, which greatly complemented the variable stars in Galactic disk. Based on the latest ZTF DR16 data, we found 2 million variable candidates. We trained a machine learner to classify variable stars, and the learner had a prediction accuracy of 94%. Using millions of variable stars, we carried out studies to optimize the period–luminosity relations and the Galactic structure and the extinction law. With the future China Space Station Telescope, millions of variable stars in the Local Group will be discovered. They help to study the structure of our Local Group and also to cross-check the distance ladders based on different variable stars.

Recently, remarkable progress has been made in understanding the formation of high mass stars. Observations provided direct evidence that massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), analogously to low-mass ones, form via disk-mediated accretion accompanied by episodic accretion bursts, possibly caused by disk fragmentation. In the case of MYSOs, the mechanism theoretically provides a means to overcome radiation pressure, but in practice it is poorly studied - only three accretion bursts in MYSOs have been caught in action to date. A significant contribution to the development of the theory has been made with the study of masers, which have proven to be a powerful tool for locating “bursting” MYSOs. This overview focuses on the exceptional role that masers play in the search and study of accretion bursts in massive protostars.

In the context of a perturbed two body problem, in which the Keplerian motion of the small object (the satellite) is perturbed by the oblateness of the central body (the asteroid) and the attraction of a third body (the Sun), we discuss the long-term evolution of the orbital elements of a satellite orbiting an oblate body, with a particular focus on the behavior of the inclination and the longitude of the ascending node. We derive analytically the position of the Laplace plane as a function of several parameters and use this solution to analyse the long-term evolution of distant circular orbits. The analytical study is complemented by numerical tests, performed in the context of both Cartesian and Hamiltonian frameworks. The results give a description of the orbital dynamical environment of asteroids and reveal the parameters that play a key role in the long-term stability of distant circular orbits.

We aim to uncover the structure of the continuum and broad emission line (BEL) emitting regions in the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1004+4112 through unique microlensing signatures. Analyzing 20 spectroscopic observations from 2003 to 2018, we study the striking deformations of various BEL profiles and determine the sizes of their respective emitting regions. We use the emission line cores as a baseline for no microlensing and then apply Bayesian methods to derive the sizes of the Lyα, Si IV, C IV, C III], and Mg II emitting regions, as well as of the underlying continuum-emitting sources. We find that the sizes of the emitting regions for the BELs are a few light-days across, notably smaller than in typical lensed quasars. The asymmetric distortions observed in the BELs suggest that the broad-line region lacks spherical symmetry and is likely confined to a plane. The inferred continuum emitting region sizes are larger than predictions based on standard thin-disk theory by a factor of ∼ 4. We find that the size-wavelength relation is in agreement with that of a geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disk.

The space domain has undergone several changes in the last decade (aka “new space era”), and will continue to do so in coming years. This led to several challenges which should be recognized and tackled by all actors of this domain, including scientists.

We present the results obtained using spectroscopic data taken with the intermediate-resolution Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) of B and A-type supergiants and bright giants in the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300. For our analysis, a hybrid local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) line-blanketing+non-LTE method was used to improve the previously published results for the same data. In addition, we present some further applications of this work, which includes extending the flux-weighted gravity luminosity relationship (FGLR), a distance determination method for supergiants. This pioneering work opens up a new window to explore this relation, and also demonstrates the enormous potential of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) for extragalactic quantitative stellar studies.

The protostellar environment where young stars form has physical conditions suitable to excite a number of molecular maser lines that have traditionally provided an unique probe of star formation kinematics, at the highest angular resolution of radio very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. In the following, we will discuss a number of recent results on our understanding of the gas dynamics traced by masers in the vicinity of young forming stars. These findings provide direct clues on how our community can substantially contribute to the field of star formation in the next decade.

The OH/IR stars evolving on the Asymptotic Giant Branch are large-amplitude variable stars with periods in the range of ~400 to 2500 days, significantly longer than those of the related Mira variables. We use preliminary results from a monitoring program of the 1612-MHz OH maser variations of a sample of > 70 OH/IR stars to study a possible extension of Mira Period-Luminosity Relations to longer periods. The period distribution of the sample is split around P ~ 1100 days. Using WISE W3 absolute magnitudes as proxies for the luminosity and the best available distances, we found no convincing relation between periods and absolute magnitudes. A cause could be rapid evolution of the ‘extreme OH/IR stars’ (the group with P >1100 days) close to the tip of the AGB, where no increase of luminosity is expected on the short time-scales involved.

Planets and stars have liquid layers that can support internal gravity waves and inertial waves respectively restored by the buoyancy and Coriolis forces. Both types of waves are excited by tides, leading to resonantly amplified dissipation. We review the theoretical formalism to compute these resonances and present some challenges and methods to overcome them.

Disk-jet systems are common in astrophysical sources of different nature, from black holes to gaseous giant planets. The disk drives the mass accretion onto a central compact object and the jet ejects material along the disk rotation axis. Magnetohydrodynamic disk winds can provide the link between mass accretion and ejection, which is essential to ensure that the excess angular momentum is removed and accretion can proceed. However, up to now, we have been lacking direct observational proof of disk winds. This work presents a direct view of the velocity field of a disk wind around a forming massive star. Achieving a very high spatial resolution of 0.05 au, our water maser observations trace the velocities of individual streamlines emerging from the disk orbiting the forming star. We find that, at low elevation above the disk midplane, the flow co-rotates with its launch point in the disk, in agreement with magneto-centrifugal acceleration. Beyond the co-rotation point, the flow rises spiraling around the disk rotation axis along a helical magnetic field. We have performed (resistive-radiative-gravito-) magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the formation of a massive star and record the development of a magneto-centrifugally launched jet presenting many properties in agreement with our observations.

Whether it be due to rapid rotation or binary interactions, deviations from spherical symmetry are common in massive stars. These deviations from spherical symmetry are known to cause non-uniform distributions of various parameters across the surface including temperature, which can drive internal mixing processes within the envelopes of these massive stars. Despite how common these 3D distortions are, they are often neglected in spectroscopic analyses. We present a new spectral analysis code called spamms (Spectroscopic PAtch Model for Massive Stars) specifically designed to analyze non-spherical systems. We discuss how the code works and discuss its assumptions. Furthermore, we demonstrate how spamms can be applied to a variety of different types of systems and we show how it can model 3D effects in a way that current analysis techniques are not able to.
