Current searches for galaxy-scale strong lenses focus on massive Luminous Red Galaxies but tend to overlook late-type lenses, in part because of their smaller Einstein radii. We take advantage of the superb seeing of the UNIONS survey in the r-band to perform an imaging search for edge-on late-type lenses. We use Convolutional Neural Networks trained with simulated observations composed of images of real galaxies from UNIONS and real sources from HST. Using 3600 square degrees of the survey we test ∼7 million galaxies and find 56 systems with obvious signs of lensing. In addition, we empirically estimate the true prevalence of lenses in UNIONS by visually inspecting 120,000 randomly chosen images in the survey. We find that the number of edge-on lenses we discover with CNNs is compatible with these estimates.

Early cosmic epochs are characterized by low metallicity and high specific star-formation rates. These conditions are dominated by massive-star feedback that may be dramatically different than the traditional model dominated by hot, thermal superwinds driven by supernova explosions. Instead, metal-poor feedback from massive stars may be radiation-dominated, with weak mechanical feedback, possibly aiding the escape of Lyα and Lyman continuum radiation. I will describe our understanding that is emerging from observations of starburst galaxies in the local universe.

Exoplanet detection surveys revealed the existence of numerous multi-planetary systems packed close to their stability limit. In this proceeding, we review the mechanism driving the instability of compact systems, originally published in (Petit et al. 2020). Compact systems dynamics are dominated by the interactions between resonances involving triplets of planets. The complex network of three-planet mean motion resonances drives a slow chaotic semi-major axes diffusion, leading to a fast and destructive scattering phase. This model reproduces quantitatively the instability timescale found numerically. We can observe signpost of this process on exoplanet systems architecture. The critical spacing ensuring stability scales as the planet-to star mass ratio to the power 1/4. It explains why the Hill radius is not an adapted measure of dynamical compactness of exoplanet systems, particularly for terrestrial planets. We also provide some insight on the theoretical tools developped in the original work and how they can be of interest in other problems.

The paper corresponds to the session organised by the IAU inter-commission B2-B5 working group “Laboratory Astrophysics Data Compilation, Validation and Standardization: from the Laboratory to FAIR usage in the Astronomical Community” at the IAU 2022 General Assembly. The session included talks about the usage and implementation of FAIR concepts in VAMDC and in the IVOA, then domain specific talks oriented towards planetology, dust and ices. OH megamasers (OHMs) are luminous masers found in (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). OHMs are signposts of major gas-rich mergers associated with some of the most extreme star forming regions in our universe. The dominant OH masing line, occurring at 1667 MHz, can spoof the 1420 MHz neutral hydrogen (HI) line in untargeted HI emission line surveys. While only ∼120 OHMs are currently known, HI surveys on next-generation radio telescopes, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursors, will detect unprecedented numbers of OHMs. This surge in detections will not only fundamentally change what we know about the OHM population, but will also unlock our ability to implement OHMs as tracers of major mergers and extreme star formation on cosmic scales. Here we present predictions for the number of OHMs that will be detected by these surveys. We also present our novel methods for identifying these interlopers using a k-Nearest Neighbors machine learning algorithm. Preliminary data from HI surveys on precursor SKA telescopes is being used to vet and strengthen these methods as well as give us a first look at a new era in OHM science. From a detection of one of the most luminous OHMs to the discovery of a megamaser at a record-shattering redshift, these new sources are glimpses into how our understanding of the known OHM population will soon be expanding and shifting rapidly and how they will influence our understanding of galaxy evolution.

Rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra are fundamental to our understanding of star-forming galaxies, providing a unique window on massive star populations (MSs), chemical evolution, feedback processes, and reionization. JWST is ushering in a new era, pushing the FUV frontier beyond z=10. The success of such endeavors hinges on a comprehensive understanding of the MSs and gas conditions that power the observed spectra. The COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) is a powerful and promising solution providing high-quality, high-resolution FUV spectra of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies. The spectra contain a suite of features that simultaneously characterize the MSs that populate metal-poor galaxies, physical properties of large-scale outflows, and chemical abundance patterns. The CLASSY sample is consistent with the z 0 mass-metallicity relationship and spans 1.5 dex in metallicity. These unique properties make CLASSY the benchmark training set for studies of MSs in star-forming galaxies both across cosmic time and connecting metal-poor to metal-rich populations.

The Solar Orbiter spacecraft, launched in February 2020, is equipped with both remote-sensing (RS) and in-situ (IS) instruments to record novel and unprecedented measurements of the solar atmosphere and the inner heliosphere. To take full advantage of these new datasets, we have developed tools and techniques to facilitate multi-instrument and multi-spacecraft studies. In particular the yet inaccessible low solar corona below 2 R⊙ can only be observed remotely and techniques must be used to retrieve coronal plasma properties in time and in 3-D space. These properties are useful to drive numerical models and test the different theories proposed to describe the fundamental processes of the solar atmosphere. In addition, the last decades of research have shown that the coupling between the solar corona and the heliosphere is most efficiently studied by combining RS with IS data. During one of the last Solar Orbiter remote sensing windows (March 2022), planned for the Solar Orbiter instruments, we ran complex observation campaigns to maximize the likelihood of linking IS data to their source region near the Sun, by directing some RS instruments to specific targets on the solar disk just days before data acquisition. We show how it is possible to achieve these results directed to improve our understanding of how heliospheric probes connect magnetically to the solar disk.

This paper gives an overview of the IAU B5 commission session on “Laboratory Astrophysics Activities” at the 2022 IAU General Assembly (GA). It provides a brief overview of the talks that were given in that session. The IAU 2022 GA B5 commission meeting was organised to present Laboratory Astrophysics activities in various parts of the world in an attempt to provide a first step towards a “Global Network of Laboratory Astrophysics Network of Activities and Data”. In this Review, I discuss recent developments on the long-term dynamical evolution of exoplanet systems, focusing on how distinctive dynamical processes may have shaped the orbital architectures of observed populations. I include three applications that highlight part of my own work. First, I examine the high-eccentricity tidal migration of hot Jupiters from a phase of dynamical instability and subsequent secular interactions in two-planet systems. Second, secular chaos as the origin of ultra-short-period planets with extreme period ratios. Third, secular resonance sweeping driven by a dispersing protoplanetary disk as the origin hot Neptunes residing in polar orbits. Finally, I discuss how upcoming observations will allow further constraining the prevalence of these dynamical processes.

From various lensing and non-lensing observations, the total density profile in elliptical galaxies is well approximated by a power law mass distribution. However, as neither the dark matter nor the baryons individually follow the power law, this observational result has been referred to as the “bulge–halo conspiracy”. We investigate the consistency of this conspiracy with higher precision than previous studies with the largest ever sample of galaxy–galaxy lenses assembled from archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data. By performing lens modelling with power law profiles and combining them with stellar dynamics using the mass-sheet transformation, we can constrain the profile’s deviation from the power law model over a redshift range of 0.1 to 0.8. To uniformly model such a large sample of lens models, we use the automated modelling pipeline dolphin. We also investigate the evolutionary trend of the total mass density slope of the lensing galaxies.

Very metal-poor massive stars hold the key to interpret high-redshift star-forming galaxies and the early reionization epoch, but also contemporary events such as gravitational waves. To study these objects in resolved environments, we need to resort to dwarf irregular galaxies far from the potential wells of M31 and the Milky Way, and therefore distant. While the archives, recently boosted by the ULLYSES and XSHOOTU programs, store a healthy dataset of massive stars in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, the number of observed targets with poorer metal content than the SMC (1/5 Zȯ) is dramatically small. This paper reviews the state of observations of very metal-poor massive stars, assessing what can be realistically learned about their physics and evolution with current instrumentation, and arguing whether or not near-future facilities can remedy the gaps in the knowledge that remain.

We combine JWST/NIRCam imaging and MUSE data to characterize the properties of galaxies in the cluster Abell2744 (z=0.3064) and in its immediate surroundings. We discover a “red-excess” population in F200W–F444W colors in both the cluster regions and the field. These galaxies have normal F115W-F150W colors and rather blue rest frame B–V colors, but are up to 0.8 mag redder than red sequence galaxies in F200W–F444W. Considering morphology, many cluster galaxies show signatures consistent with ram pressure stripping, while field galaxies have features resembling interactions and mergers. Our hypothesis is that these galaxies are characterized by dust enshrouded star formation: a JWST/NIRSpec spectrum for one of the galaxies is dominated by a strong PAH at 3.3 μm, suggestive of dust obscured star formation.

We present our systematic infrared and (sub)millimeter spectroscopic observations of gas/dust-rich merging ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) to scrutinize deeply buried AGNs (mass-accreting supermassive black holes [SMBHs]). We have found signatures of optically elusive, but intrinsically luminous buried AGNs in a large fraction of nearby (z < 0.3) ULIRGs, suggesting that SMBH mass growth is ongoing in the ULIRG population. Using ALMA, we have detected compact (<100 pc), very luminous (>104Lʘ), AGN-origin, 183 GHz (1.6 mm) H2O megamaser emission in one merging ULIRG, demonstrating that the megamaser emission can be a very powerful tool to dynamically estimate SMBH masses, with the smallest modeling uncertainty of kpc-wide stellar and gas mass distribution, at dusty ULIRGs’ nuclei, because of minimum extinction effects at millimeter. We present our current results and future prospect for the study of the SMBH mass growth in gas/dust-rich galaxy mergers, using (sub)millimeter AGN-origin H2O megamaser emission lines.

Local Group galaxies, particularly the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, have historically played and continue to play a unique role in studies of the period–luminosity (PL), period–luminosity–color (PLC), and period–Wesenheit (PW) relations, not just for pulsating stars. In recent years, significant efforts have been devoted to calibrate the PL, PLC, and PW relationships at different wavelengths, including studies of the influence of metallicity and nonlinearities on the accuracy of measured distances. However, the PL diagram has many more astrophysical applications. It serves as a vital tool for classifying different types of pulsating stars and can even facilitate the discovery of new classes of variable stars. Moreover, it aids in distinguishing among various modes of pulsation, facilitates the identification of pulsating stars that are members of binary systems, and enables studies of the three-dimensional structures of neighboring galaxies. In this contribution, I present the latest results on the PL, PLC, and PW relations obeyed by various types of variable stars in Local Group galaxies – from δ Scuti stars to Mira variabless and from close binary systems to the mysterious long secondary periods exhibited by red giant and supergiant stars.

Upcoming large-scale surveys like LSST are expected to uncover approximately 105 strong gravitational lenses within massive datasets. Traditional manual techniques are too time-consuming and impractical for such volumes of data. Consequently, machine learning methods have emerged as an alternative. In our prior work (Thuruthipilly et al. 2022), we introduced a self-attention-based machine learning model (transformers) for detecting strong gravitational lenses in simulated data from the Bologna Lens Challenge. These models offer advantages over simpler convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art CNN models. We applied this model to the datasets from Bologna Lens Challenge 1 and 2 and simulated data on Euclid.

Experimental studies are key to investigating the physical and chemical processes that drive cloud and haze formation from gas and solid phase molecular precursors in (exo)planetary environments, and validating the theoretical calculations used in models of (exo)planetary atmospheres. They allow characterizing the physical, optical, and chemical properties of laboratory-generated analogs, hence providing critical input parameters to models for observational data analysis. In this paper, we present examples of (1) experiments performed with different facilities to produce analogs of Titan and exoplanet atmospheric aerosols from gas phase molecular precursors, and (2) the characterization of these analogs to provide information on their composition, morphology, and optical constants to the scientific community. We also introduce the recently launched NASA Center for Optical Constants (NCOC), which will provide this critical data to the scientific community for (exo)planetary-relevant ices and organic refractory materials produced in the laboratory from the irradiation of gas and ice precursors.

Pulsating stars play a crucial role in the calibration of the cosmic distance scale as well as in tracing the properties of the associated stellar populations. In the era of large observational surveys and precise astrometric missions, it is crucial to rely on accurate stellar pulsation models able to predict the observed behaviors for different physical assumptions. Indeed, the relations currently used in the literature to derive individual and mean distances of mainly radially pulsating stars such as Cepheids and RR Lyrae are well physically understood, but are also known to depend on a number of often unknown parameters. Recent extensive sets of stellar pulsation models developed by various authors show how variations in the physical assumptions can affect the theoretical prediction of the instability strip boundaries, the morphology and amplitude of light and radial velocity curves, and the consequent Period-Luminosity, Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Wesenheit relations. These aspects are discussed in the framework of current open problems in the field of classical pulsating stars.
