We present results from numerical simulations of expanding and colliding supershells. These large-scale spherical shocks, created by the combined feedback from several OB stars, are unstable to a number of hydrodynamical instabilities, so they quickly fragment into cold and highly structured clumps. A collision between two large shells can organize these small clumps into very filamentary structures, of tens of parsecs length and less than a parsec thick. In simulations where the flow of stellar material is followed with a tracer quantity, cold structures practically do not contain any enriched material from the OB associations at the time of their creation. In this context then, the clumps are created almost exclusively out of diffuse ISM material, containing almost no wind or supernova matter. Although the mechanism presented here is possibly not the only route for filament creation, this predicted property may help identify regions of sequential star formation.

Accurate characterization of stellar populations is of prime importance to correctly understand the formation and evolution process of our Galaxy. The field of asteroseismology has been particularly successful in such an endeavor providing fundamental parameters for large samples of stars in different evolutionary phases. We present our results on determinations of masses, radii, and distances of stars in the CoRoT and Kepler fields, showing that we can map and date different regions of the galactic disk and distinguish gradients in the distribution of stellar properties at different heights. We further review how asteroseismic determinations can produce a unique set of constraints, including ages, outside the solar neighborhood for galactic chemical evolution models.

Many studies focused on very massive stars (VMS) within the framework of Pop. III stars, because this is where they were thought to be abundant. In this work, we focus on the evolution of VMS in the local universe following the discovery of VMS in the R136 cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We computed grids of VMS evolutionary tracks in the range 120–500 M⊙ with solar, LMC and Small Magellanic Cloud metallicities. All models end their lives as Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars of the WC (or WO) type. We discuss the evolution and fate of VMS around solar metallicity with particular focus on the WR phase. For example, we show that a distinctive feature that may be used to disentangle Wolf-Rayet stars originating from VMS from those originating from lower initial masses is the enhanced abundances of Ne and Mg at the surface of WC stars.

Recently we conducted a mini-survey towards a sample of six massive clouds with surface density >1024 cm−2 in the central molecular zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way, with the SMA at 280 GHz in the compact array and at 230 GHz in the compact/subcompact arrays. The data reveal compact dust continuum peaks, some of which are also associated with organic molecular lines and thermal SiO emission. The subcompact array data helps recover more structures, e.g. the regularly spaced, well-aligned continuum fragments in the 20 km s−1 cloud. Shock tracers such as SiO are found in all the clouds. Our observations suggest potential protostellar origin for some of the dust continuum peaks in these regions.

Spectroscopic investigations of PAHs have been conducted for many years, commencing with solid and solution studies and more recently including gas phase characterisation of a broad range of different species. Through the development of new, efficient methods of production and more sensitive spectroscopic techniques, fresh data are becoming available for not only neutral species, but also for radicals, ions and clusters.

We present the abundance analysis of three very metal poor stars, CS 22166-0030 ([Fe/H]=−2.96), CS 22186-0005 ([Fe/H]=−2.70), and CS 30344-0033 ([Fe/H]=−2.90). Our study is based on high resolution spectra which were obtained from SARG (on TNG), HARPS (on 3.6m), and UVES (on VLT) spectrographs and one-dimensional ATLAS9 model atmospheres. We derived the abundances for 2, 9, and 16 atomic species in the spectrum of CS 22166-0030, CS 22186-0005, and CS 30344-0033, respectively. The Na and Mg abundances of CS 22166-0030 are highly under-abundant with respect to the solar values. The abundance patterns of CS 22186-0005 and CS 30344-0033 are consistent with the other halo stars within abundance uncertainties.

Studies of gas phase ion-neutral reactions provide insight into many areas of astrochemistry, including the elusive characterization of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs). This presentation gives an overview of our experimental studies of several classes of positive and negative ions, using the flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube and a newly modified ion trap. Earlier studies of carbon chain anions and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cations, both of which have been suggested as carriers of the DIBs, are described. More recent work including isomeric PAHs, nitrogen-containing PAHs, negative ions of PAHs, and negative ions of 5-membered heterocyclic rings are discussed. Finally, the study of quantitative thermochemistry by coupling our results with data from Photoelectron Spectroscopy is described.

MAXI started its operation in 2009 August. Owing to its unprecedentedly high sensitivity as an all-sky X-ray monitor and to its capability of real-time data transfer, we have detected 56 strong flares from twenty-one active stars (eleven RS CVn systems, one Algol system, seven dMe stars, one dKe star and one Young Stellar Object). These flares have large X-ray luminosity of 6 × 1030 –5 × 1033 ergs s−1 in the 2–20 keV band. The flares can be thought to be high ends among their own categories. During the flare from AT Mic on 2012 April 18th, one of the largest X-ray luminosities was recorded as a dMe star, 6 × 1032 ergs s−1 in the 2–20 keV band. It is larger than its bolometric luminosity by 4 times. The total energy emitted during the flare is 1036 ergs in the same band. Such total energy can be obtained on large flares from RS CVn system, but not on any other flares from dMe stars. In this proceeding, we report on the present situation in characteristics of hyper X-ray flares on each stellar categories.

Two methods are briefly stated for finding the preliminary orbit of a small celestial body from its three or more pairs of angular measurements and the corresponding time instants. The methods are based on using the approach that we previously developed for constructing the intermediate orbit from a minimum number of observations. This intermediate orbit allows for most of the perturbations in the motion of the body under study. The methods proposed use the Herget's algorithmic scheme that makes it possible to involve additional observations as well. Using the determination of orbits of some asteroids as examples, we compare the results obtained by applying the Herget multiple-observation algorithm and the proposed methods. The comparison shows that the proposed methods are an efficient means for studying perturbed motion. They are especially advantageous if applied to high-precision observational data covering short orbital arcs.

After highlighting the principle and power of asteroseismology for stellar physics, we briefly emphasize some recent progress in this research for various types of stars. We give an overview of high-precision high duty-cycle space photometry of OB-type stars. Further, we update the overview of seismic estimates of stellar parameters of OB dwarfs, with specific emphasis on convective core overshoot. We discuss connections between pulsational, rotational, and magnetic variability of massive stars and end with future prospects for asteroseismology of evolved OB stars.

We discuss an analysis of the redshift evolutions and distributions of the gamma-ray luminosity and photon spectral index of flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) type blazars. We utilize data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, with redshfits as determined from optical spectroscopy by Shaw et al. We find that FSRQs have evolved significantly in luminosity but negligibly in photon index, and contribute in toto roughly 20% of the total gamma-ray output of the Universe.

In the past few years, gamma-ray astronomy has entered a golden age. At TeV energies, only a handful of sources were known a decade ago, but the current generation of ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes has increased this number to more than one hundred. At GeV energies, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has increased the number of known sources by nearly an order of magnitude in its first 2 years of operation. The recent detection and unprecedented morphological studies of gamma-ray emission from shell-type supernova remnants is of great interest, as these analyses are directly linked to the long standing issue of the origin of the cosmic-rays. However, these detections still do not constitute a conclusive proof that supernova remnants accelerate the bulk of Galactic cosmic-rays, mainly due to the difficulty of disentangling the hadronic and leptonic contributions to the observed gamma-ray emission. In the following, I will review the most relevant results of gamma ray astronomy concerning supernova remnants (shell-type and middle-age interacting with molecular clouds).

We carried out large–scale (4 × 2 degree) CO multi–line observations toward the central molecular zone (CMZ) in the Galactic center (GC) with the NANTEN2 4m telescope and mapped several diffuse molecular features located at relatively high Galactic latitudes above 0°.6. These high–latitude features are composed of diffuse molecular halo gas and molecular filaments according to their morphological aspects. Their high velocities and high intensity ratios between 12CO J = (2−1) and J = (1−0) clearly indicate their location in the GC, and their total mass amount to ∼10% of that of the CMZ. We discuss that magnetic field is a possible mechanism of these high–latitude molecular features lifting up toward high galactic latitude.

We first present a brief description of the six distinct families of pulsating white dwarfs that are now known. These are all opacity-driven pulsators showing low- to mid-order, low-degree gravity modes. We then discuss some recent highlights that have come up in the field of white dwarf asteroseismology.

Asteroseismic data obtained by the Kepler spacecraft have led to the recent detection and characterization of rotational frequency splittings of mixed modes in red-giant stars. This has opened the way to the determination of the core rotation rates for these stars, which is of prime importance to progress in our understanding of internal angular momentum transport. In this contribution, we discuss which constraints can be brought by these asteroseismic measurements on the modelling of angular momentum transport in stellar radiative zones.

Both analytical and numerical results are used to study high-order resonance regions in the vicinity of Molnya-type orbits. Based on data of numerical simulations, long-term orbital evolution are studied for objects in highly elliptical orbits depending on their area-to-mass ratio. The Poynting–Robertson effect causes a secular decrease in the semi-major axis of a spherically symmetrical satellite. Under the Poynting–Robertson effect, objects pass through the regions of high-order resonances. The Poynting–Robertson effect and secular perturbations of the semi-major axis lead to the formation of weak stochastic trajectories.

Up to now, many techniques have been developed to detect and observe exoplanets, the radial velocity (RV) method being the most prolific one. However, stellar magnetic spots can mimic an exoplanet transit signal and lead to a false detection. A few models have already been developed to constrain the different signature of exoplanets and spots, but they only concern RV measurements or photometry. An interferometric approach, with high angular resolution capabilities, could resolve this problem.

Optical interferometry is a powerful method to measure accurate stellar diameters, and derive fundamental parameters of stars and exoplanets minimum masses. We have built an analytical code able to calculate visibility moduli and closure phases of stars with a transiting exoplanet, to be compared with a star with no exoplanet. From the difference of interferometric signal, we can derive the presence of the exoplanet, but this requires that the star is resolved enough. We have tested this code with current available facilities like VEGA/CHARA and determined which already discovered exoplanets systems can be resolved enough to test this method.

To make a more general study, we also tested different parameters (exoplanet and stellar diameters, exoplanet position) that can lead to a variation of the minimum baseline length required to see the exoplanet signal on the visibility modulus and the phase. Stellar spots act in the same way, but the difference of local intensity between an exoplanet transit and a spot can easily be studied thanks to the interferometric measurements.

The supernova remnant (SNR) Puppis A (aka G260.4-3.4) is a middle-aged supernova remnant, which displays increasing X-ray surface brightness from West to East corresponding to an increasing density of the ambient interstellar medium at the Eastern and Northern shell. The dense IR photon field and the high ambient density around the remnant make it an ideal case to study in γ-rays. Gamma-ray studies based on three years of observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard Fermi have revealed the high energy gamma-ray emission from SNR Puppis A. The γ-ray emission from the remnant is spatially extended, and nicely matches the radio and X-ray morphologies. Its γ-ray spectrum is well described by a simple power law with an index of ~2.1, and it is among the faintest supernova remnants yet detected at GeV energies. To constrain the relativistic electron population, seven years of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data were also analyzed, and enabled to extend the radio spectrum up to 93 GHz. The results obtained in the radio and γ-ray domains are described in detail, as well as the possible origins of the high energy γ-ray emission (Bremsstrahlung, Inverse Compton scattering by electrons or decay of neutral pions produced by proton interactions).

We present the results from the X-ray spectral analysis of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Chandra Deep Field-South, AEGIS-XD and Chandra-COSMOS surveys, focussing on the identification and characterisation of the most heavily obscured, Compton thick (CT, NH > 104 cm−2) sources. Our sample is comprised of 3088 X-ray selected sources, which has a high rate of redshift completeness (97%). The aim is to produce the largest and cleanest uniform sample of these sources from the data as possible. We identify these sources through X-ray spectral fitting, utilising torus spectral models designed for heavily obscured AGN which self consistently include the spectral signatures of heavy absorption, being Compton scattering, photoelectric absorption and iron Kα fluorescence. We identify a total of 163 CT AGN covering an intrinsic 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity range of 102 −3 × 105 erg s−1 and from z = 0.1-7.

Massive pulsating white dwarf stars are extremely rare, because of their small size and because they are the final product of high-mass stars, which are less common. Because of their intrinsic smaller size, they are fainter than the normal size white dwarf stars. The motivation to look for this type of stars is to be able to study in detail their internal structure and also derive generic properties for the sub-class of variables, the massive ZZ Ceti stars. Our goal is to investigate whether the internal structures of these stars differ from the lower-mass ones, which in turn could have been resultant from the previous evolutionary stages.

In this paper, we present the ensemble seismological analysis of the known massive pulsating white dwarf stars. Some of these pulsating stars might have substantial crystallized cores, which would allow us to probe solid physics in extreme conditions.
