The discovery of γ-ray emission from 5 radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies revealed the presence of a possible emerging third class of AGNs with relativistic jets, in addition to blazars and radio galaxies. The existence of relativistic jets also in this subclass of Seyfert galaxies opened an unexplored research space for our knowledge of the radio-loud AGNs. Here, we discuss the radio-to-γ-rays properties of the γ-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, also in comparison with the blazar scenario.

One of the major tasks in interpretation of data from large-scale stellar surveys is to determine the fundamental atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. In most on-going and upcoming projects, they are derived spectroscopically, relying on classical one-dimensional (1D) model atmospheres and the assumption of LTE. This review discusses the present achievements and problems of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line-formation calculations for FGK-type stars. The topics that are addressed include (i) the construction of comprehensive model atoms for the chemical elements with complex term system, (ii) possible systematic errors inherent in classical LTE spectroscopic determinations of stellar parameters and chemical abundances, (iii) the uncertainties in final NLTE results caused by the uncertainties in atomic data, and (iv) applications of the NLTE line-formation calculations coupled to the spatial and temporal average 〈3D〉 models to spectroscopic analyses.

Four years into the Kepler mission, an updated review on the results for RR Lyrae stars is in order. More than 50 RR Lyrae stars in the Kepler field are observed with Kepler and each one of them can provide us with new insight into this class of pulsating stars. Ground-based spectroscopy of the Kepler targets allows us to narrow down their physical parameters. Previously, we already reported a 50% occurrence rate of modulation in the RRab stars, a large variety of modulation behavior, period doubling in several Blazhko stars, the detection of higher- overtone radial modes, probable non-radial modes and new types of multiple-mode RR Lyrae pulsators, among both the RRab and the RRc stars. In addition, the quasi-continuous photometry obtained over several years with Kepler allows one to observe changes in Blazhko behavior and additional longer cycles. These observations have sparked new theoretical modelling efforts. In this short paper we showcase RR Lyr itself. The star has been observed with Kepler in short cadence, and some remarkable features of its pulsation behavior are unveiled in this long-studied prototype, through the Kepler photometry and additional spectroscopic data.

Supernovae are the most energetic stellar events and influence the interstellar medium by their gasdynamics and energetics. By this, both also affect the star formation positively and negatively. In this paper, we review the complexity of investigations aiming at understanding the interchange between supernova explosions with the star-forming molecular clouds. Commencing from analytical studies the paper advances to numerical models of supernova feedback from superbubble scales to galaxy structure. We also discuss parametrizations of star-formation and supernova-energy transfer efficiencies. Since evolutionary models from the interstellar medium to galaxies are numerous and are applying multiple recipes of these parameters, only a representative selection of studies can be discussed here.

One of the original Hubble-Sandage variables, Variable C in M33 is thought to be a very typical Luminous Blue Variable (LBV). An observational signature of LBVs is a variable brightness which is coupled to a change in spectral type. We compiled a 110 year long light curve of Var C and a set of spectra covering several decades. Analyzing both data sets, various astonishing changes of Var C, some very recent, emerged. Is Var C a typical or an atypical LBV?

We briefly summarize the method of kinematic distances of Galactic radio objects and discuss the ambiguity in this method. Both Hi absorption and Hi self-absorption are effective tools to solve the kinematic distance ambiguity. We build the 21 cm Hi absorption spectrum of the complex G35.6-0.5, and suggest SNR G35.6-0.4, one component of the complex, is located at the near side distance of about 3.6 kpc.

We suggest a new formation mechanism for the inclined, sub-parsec scale and counterrotating stellar disks observed around the central black hole in the Milky Way Galactic center. The simulation of a single molecular cloud crashing into a circumnuclear ring of gas leads to the inflow of multiple streams of gas towards the central parsec region. The time delayed arrival of those streams forms multiple, sub-parsec scale accretion disks, with angular momentum depending on the ratio of cloud and circumnuclear ring material. These accretion disks could then be the progenitors which fragmented into the observed stellar disks. A similar event might have also led to the creation of the so-called minispiral in the Galactic center.

The advent of Milky Way high-resolution spectroscopic surveys has brought our attention to the importance of precise chemical abundance measurements to disentangle the stellar population puzzle of the Galaxy. Moreover, automated stellar parameters are the bedrock of Galactic spectroscopic surveys science. They allow a rapid and homogeneous processing of extensive data sets, necessary for an efficient scientific return. In this review, I discuss the different parametrization techniques, focusing on the automated determination of individual element abundances. Each of them has its optimal application conditions that mainly depend on the computation time constraints, the spectral resolution, the wavelength domain, the data signal-to-noise ratio and parameter degeneracy problems. The main algorithms in the literature are also reviewed.

This article reports some preliminary results on an analysis of line bisectors of metal absorption lines of RR Lyrae, the prototype of its class of pulsators. The extensive data set used for this study consists of a time series of spectra obtained at various pulsation phases as well as different Blazhko phases. This setup should allow a comparison of the atmospheric behaviour, especially of the function of radial velocity versus depth at differing Blazhko phases, but (almost) identical pulsation phase, making it possible to investigate whether the modulation causes a change in the atmospheric motion of RR Lyrae. While the nature of the Blazhko modulation has often been investigated photometrically and described as a change in the light curve, studies on time series of high resolution spectra are rare. We present for the first time work on line bisectors at different phases of RR Lyr.

The entry of small celestial bodies such as cometary nuclei, asteroids and their large fragments, into a planetary atmosphere is accompanied by an “explosion”, i.e., sudden rise in brightness and the generation of a “blast” shock wave, like the 2013 Chelyabinsk event. Fully analytic approach to the phenomenon is developed taking into account aerodynamic crushing of the body and transversal expansion of the crushed mass, that leads to impulse generation of hot plasma and a “blast” shock wave in the thin “exploding” layer.

Carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) cannot be definitively identified without laboratory spectra. Several techniques, including matrix isolation, cavity ringdown spectroscopy, resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization, and ion trapping, have been used to measure the electronic spectra of carbon chains and their derivatives. The gas-phase laboratory spectra could then be compared to the astronomical data of known DIBs. The choice of molecules studied in the gas phase depends on the presence of strong electronic transitions at optical wavelengths, the lifetimes of excited electronic states, and chemical feasibility in diffuse astrophysical environments. Collisional-radiative rate models have also be used in conjunction with laboratory spectra to predict absorption profiles under interstellar conditions.

We investigated the contribution of the jet to the observed high energy emission in a sample of young and compact radio quasars. For the first time, we compared the Fermi-LAT and Chandra observations of the sample to γ-ray and X-ray luminosities predicted assuming a jet synchrotron and inverse Compton radiative model. The simulations performed for a reasonable set of model parameters and assumptions provide constraints on the minimum jet power (Ljet,kin/Ldisk>0.01), on the contribution of the jet to the X-ray emission, and on the particles to magnetic field energy density ratios.

The direct measurements of the meridional flow velocities on stars are impossible today. We suppose that the matter on a surface of solar-like stars with stable activity period passes the way equal to 2π R∗ during the stellar Hale cycle. We present here the dependence of meridional flow velocity on Rossby number, which is an effective parameter of the stellar magnetic dynamo.

We present results from a high-resolution wide-field imaging observation of the central molecular zone (CMZ) in H13CO+J = (1 − 0) and SiO v=0, J = (2−1) emission lines by using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope in order to depict the high-density molecular gas mass distribution and explore molecular gas affected by interstellar shocks. We found a candidate for ongoing cloud-cloud collision in the Sgr B2 complex. This is identified as a hollow paraboloid-like structure in the l−b−v data cube of both emission lines. The central part of the feature is denser and warmer than the outer envelope and contains a vast amount of shocked molecular gas. These properties are consistent with those expected from simulations of cloud-cloud collisions in the CMZ.

Supernovae are the dominant source of stellar feedback, which plays an important role in regulating galaxy formation and evolution. While this feedback process is still quite uncertain, it is probably not due to individual supernova remnants as commonly observed. Most supernovae likely take place in low-density, hot gaseous environments, such as superbubbles and galactic bulges, and typically produce no long-lasting bright remnants. I review recent observational and theoretical work on the impact of such supernovae on galaxy ecosystems, particularly on hot gas in superbubbles and galactic spheroids.

We have developed an entirely new formulation to obtain self-gravitating, axisymmetric configurations in permanent rotation. It is based on the Lagrangian variational principle and, as a consequence, will allow us to apply it to stellar evolution calculations rather easily. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique, which is analogous to those employed in other fields, e.g. nuclear physics, in minimizing the energy functional. We also present the analogies between the study on rotating stellar configurations and the one on deformed nuclei. Possible applications are not limited to main sequence stars but will be extended to e.g. compact stars, proto-stars and planets. We believe that our formulation will be a major break-through then.

Close encounters of Near Earth Objects (NEOs) with large asteroids are a possible source of systematic errors in trajectory propagations and asteroid mitigation. It is, thus, necessary to identify those large asteroids that have to be considered as perturbers in NEO orbit modeling. Using the Standard Dynamical Model we searched for encounters between the 1649 numbered Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and 2191 large asteroids having sizes greater than 20 km. Investigating the 21st century A. D. we have found 791 close encounters with 195 different large asteroids that lead to a substantial scattering of NEOs.

Cross-correlation of consecutive Doppler images is one of the most common techniques used to detect surface differential rotation (hereafter DR) on spotted stars. The disadvantage of a single cross-correlation is, however, that the expected DR pattern can be overwhelmed by sudden changes in the apparent spot configuration. Another way to reconstruct the image shear using Doppler imaging is to include a predefined latitude-dependent rotation law in the inversion code (‘sheared image method’). However, special but not unusual spot distributions, such like a large polar cap or an equatorial belt (e.g., small random spots evenly distributed along the equator), can distort the rotation profile similarly as the DR does, consequently, yielding incorrect measure of the DR from the sheared image method. To avoid these problems, the technique of measuring DR from averaged cross-correlations using time-series Doppler images (‘ACCORD’) is introduced and the reliability of this tool is demonstrated on artificial data.

In this review we focus on non-linear phenomena in pulsating stars: mode selection and amplitude limitation. Of many linearly excited modes, only a fraction is detected in pulsating stars. Which of them are excited, and why (the problem of mode selection), and to what amplitude (the problem of amplitude limitation) are intrinsically non-linear and still unsolved problems. Tools for studying these problems are briefly discussed and our understanding of mode selection and amplitude limitation in selected groups of self-excited pulsators is presented. We focus on classical pulsators (Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars) and main-sequence variables (δ Scuti and β Cephei stars). Directions of future studies are briefly discussed.

A large fraction of the AGN output power is emitted in the X-rays, in a region very close to the supermassive black hole (SMBH). The most distinctive feature of the X-ray spectra of AGN is the iron Kα line, often observed as the superposition of a broad and a narrow component. While the broad component is found in only ~ 35–45% of bright nearby AGN, the narrow component has been found to be ubiquitous. The narrow Fe Kα line is thought to be produced in the circumnuclear material, likely in the molecular torus. Given its origin, this feature is possibly the most important tracer of neutral matter surrounding the SMBH. One of the most interesting characteristics of the narrow Fe Kα line is the decrease of its equivalent width with the continuum luminosity, the so-called X-ray Baldwin effect (Iwasawa & Taniguchi 1993). This trend has been found by many studies of large samples of type-I AGN, and very recently also in type-II AGN (Ricci et al. 2013c, submitted to ApJ). The slope of the X-ray Baldwin effect in type-II AGN is the same of their unobscured counterparts, which implies that the mechanism at work is the same. Several hypothesis have been put forward in the last decade to explain the X-ray Baldwin effect: i) a luminosity-dependent variation in the ionisation state of the iron-emitting material (Nandra et al. 1997); ii) the decrease of the number of continuum photons in the iron line region with the Eddington ratio, as an effect of the well known correlation between the photon index and the Eddington ratio (Ricci et al. 2013b, submitted to MNRAS); iii) the decrease of the covering factor of the torus with the luminosity (e.g., Page et al. 2004, Ricci et al. 2013a A&A 553, 29) as expected by luminosity-dependent unification models (e.g., Ueda et al. 2003). In my talk I will review the main characteristics of the narrow Fe K? line, and present the results of our recent works aimed at explaining the X-ray Baldwin effect using iron-line emitting physical torus models (Ricci et al. 2013a, b), and at understanding the origin of the Fe K? line (Ricci et al. 2013c). I will focus in particular on the importance of the Fe Kα line as a probe of the evolution of the physical characteristics of the molecular torus with the luminosity.
