We have studied a sample of 26 globular clusters for which so far absolute proper motions exist in the literature. The proper motions were combined with distances and radial velocities for a determination of the space motion of the clusters. Using different galactic potentials (see Dauphole & Colin 1994 and references therein) we calculated the orbits of the globular clusters and their time averaged eccentricities, total energies, and apo- and perigalactic distances. The relation of the orbital quantities to the metallicities of the globular clusters has been studied. Preliminary results of this study were presented in Geffert et al. (1993).

The ESA astrometric mission Gaia will be able to put to test General Relativity thanks to differential astrometric measurements. The differential experiment, GAREX, implemented in the form of repeated Eddington-like measurement, aims at measuring the quadrupole light bending due to an oblate planet by comparing the evolution of relative distances in stellar fields in the vicinity of it. Simulations which utilize (i) selected fields extracted from the GSCII data base, (ii) a realistic error model as function of the star's magnitude and distance from Jupiter's edge, show the real best scenarios and how to improve the Gaia ability to detect this relativistic effect.

Differential Interferometry (DI) is the application of high angular resolution interferometric techniques to objects observed simultaneously at different wavelengths. When applied to unresolved double stars it makes it possible to measure the variation of the object photocenter with wavelength, which yields angular and spectral information well beyond the classical resolution limits. Signal–to–noise ratio analysis shows that, if DI experiments are limited by photon and speckle noise, the technique can be applied to a large number of double systems for the measurement of vectorial angular separations and of radial-velocity differences. With 4-m telescopes, there are a few tens of binary systems for which DI should permit the resolution and the measurement of the position angle of the rotation axis of at least one of the components. A preliminary experiment permitted a high SNR resolution of the double star Capella with a 1.52-m telescope and showed the current limitations of DI performances resulting from an imperfect correction of detector geometrical distortions.

With relatively small black hole masses and high accretion rates, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies are thought to be young AGNs. About 7% of them are radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s). RLNLS1s allow us to re-address some of the key questions regarding the physics of jet formation. As the first step of the systematic study on the jet properties of RLNLS1s, we present the radio structure of fourteen RLNLS1s from VLBA observations at 5 GHz in 2013. Although all these sources are very radio-loud with R > 100, their jet properties are diverse, in terms of their pc-scale morphology and overall radio spectral shape. The core brightness temperatures of our sources are significantly lower than those of blazars, therefore, the beaming effect is generally not significant, compared to blazars. This implies that the bulk jet speed may likely be low in our sources.

With the current convergence of determinations of the Hubble Constant (e.g. The Extragalactic Distance Scale, 1997, Livio, Donahue and Panagia, eds.) to values within ±25% rather than a factor of two, and the clear possibility of determining q0 using high redshift supernovae (Garnavich et al. 1998), the major remaining problem in observational cosmology is the determination of Ω — what is the dark matter, how much is there, and how is it distributed?

The most direct approach to the last two parts of the question has been to study galaxy dynamics, first through the motions of galaxies in binaries, groups and clusters, and in the last decade and a half, driven by the observation of our motion w.r.t. the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and thenotion that DM must be clumped on larger scales than galaxy clusters if (Ω is to be unity, through the study of large scale galaxy flows.

The ratio of the mass density to the closure mass density, Ω, is thought by most observers to be ~0.1-0.3, primarily based on the results of dynamical measurements of galaxy clusters and, more recently, gravitational lensing studies of clusters. In contrast, most theoretical cosmologists opt for a high density universe, Ω = 1.0, based on the precepts of the inflation scenario, the difficulty of forming galaxies in low density models given the observed smoothness of the microwave background radiation, and the observational evidence from the matching of the available large scale flow measurements (and the absolute microwave background dipole velocity) to the local density field. However this last result is extremely controversial—matching the velocity field to the density field derived from IRAS (60μ) selected galaxy samples yields high Ω values (e.g., Dekel et al. 1993) but matching to optically selected samples yields low values (Hudson 1994; Lahav et al. 1994; Santiago et al. 1995). On small scales, the high Ω camp argues that the true matter distribution is much more extended than the distribution of galaxies, so the dynamical mass estimates are biased low.

The hypothesis that a significant fraction of Be stars are interacting binaries is discussed in general terms. The author believes that the observed Be stars are a mixture of three different types of objects. The weakest point of the single-star hypothesis is probably the difficulty in explaining the quasi-periodic V/R variations; the weakest point of the binary hypothesis appears to be the statistical expectancy of a fairly high number of eclipsing systems among them.

Phnom Rung was a Khmer-style Hindu temple complex. It was built in sandstone and laterite on the rim of an extinct volcano between the 10th and 13th centuries. At the beginning, the sanctuary was built as a dedication to Shiva. Following the abandonment of Phnom Rung (which was unrecorded) the sanctuary fell into ruin, and it was not until 1971 that it was restored using anastylosis. Phnom Rung Historical Park, along with the other temples Phimai and Muang Tum, have been on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage since 2004.

Walking from the eastern side (front) to the western side of Phnom Rung takes the visitor through 15 doorways—those of the inner cloisters, the annex, the principal tower, and the inner sanctum. The centers of these doorways are perfectly aligned, with an azimuth of 84.5°. Every year thousands of people from Thailand and around the world travel to Phnom Rung to see the sun rising through its all of its 15 doorways. This event happens only twice a year, at the beginning of April and the beginning of September. Sunsets can also be seen through the doorways, in March and October. Each pair of sunrise-sunset events is separated by one lunar month.

The possible meaning of this event has been investigated by both archaeologists and astronomers. Nothing is recorded about sunrise or sunset among the inscriptions at the site. Another issue is that the many and various structures remain within the complex, showing that constructions in this area spanned several centuries. However, it seems that the overall layout did have a significance, both astronomical and religious.

This paper reviews the many, by now familiar, processes that have at various times been attributed to the interstellar motions, in an effort to piece together some over-all picture of the grosser dynamical relations which might be expected to apply to the motions of the material and electromagnetic fields between the stars. We are interested in numerical values for the material densities, velocity fields, magnetic fields, etc., and we should also like to know to what extent the observed properties of the different fields are dependent upon each other.

A number of recent studies have claimed that the double red clump observed in the Milky Way bulge is a consequence of an X-shaped structure. In particular, Ness & Lang (2016) report a direct detection of a faint X-shaped structure in the bulge from the residual map of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) image. Here we show, however, that their result is seriously affected by a bulge model subtracted from the original image. When a boxy bulge model is subtracted, instead of a simple exponential bulge model as has been done by Ness & Lang, we find that most of the X-shaped structure in the residuals disappears. Furthermore, even if real, the stellar density in the claimed X-shaped structure is way too low to be observed as a strong double red clump (dRC) at l = 0°.

Global history of star or cluster formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been the center of interest in several studies as it is thought to be influenced by tidal interaction with the Small Magellanic Cloud and even the Milky Way. This study focus on the formation history of the LMC in relation with the context of binary star clusters population, the apparent binary fraction (e.g., percentage of cluster pairs) in different epoch were calculated and analyzed. From the established distributions, it can be deduced that the binary clusters tend to be young (∽ 100 Myr) while their locations coincide with the locations of star forming complexes. There is an indication that the binary fraction increases as the rise of star formation rate in the last millions years. In the LMC, the increase of binary fraction at age ∽ 100 Myr can be associated to the last episode of close encounter with the Small Magellanic Cloud at ∽ 150 Myr ago. This observational evidence supports the theory of binary cluster formation through the fission of molecular cloud where the encounter between galaxies enhanced the clouds velocity dispersion which in turn increased the probability of cloud-cloud collisions that produce binary clusters.

Interstellar dust grains approaching the Sun are influenced mainly by solar gravity, solar electromagnetic radiation and Lorentz force due to the existence of interplanetary magnetic field. These interactions together with the effect of the solar wind on dust grain and the effect of solar cycle are taken into account when modelling behaviour of interstellar dust in the vicinity of the Sun. As a consequence, nonspherical dust grains can be captured and survive in the solar system – they can orbit the Sun in sufficiently large distances from the Sun not to be thermally destroyed. On the other hand, captured spherical dust grains are practically all destroyed. Detailed numerical simulations showed an interesting behaviour of a quantity of the dimension of length cubed divided by time squared. The quantity behaves practically as an invariant of motion: it is a constant during the process when surviving captured interstellar grain is orbiting the Sun. A classification of possible motions of triple systems is presented emphasizing the transient phenomena occurring in addition to the final (asymptotic) outcome and clarifying the discrepancies between the astronomical and mathematical formulations. A conjectured possible instability is described and it is shown that systems with negative total energy and low angular momentum may lead to instability and to the formation of binaries. The ejected or escaping star may have high velocity if the triple close approach preceding the escape is sufficiently close. The computational results of several systematic series of such escapes are applied to various stellar configurations.

The present status of the fundamental problem of partitioning the phase-space into stable and unstable regions is reviewed and a recently developed technique, applicable to stellar dynamics is described. Recently discovered families of periodic orbits and previously established classical configurations are shown to weaken the general instability conjecture.

The possible existence of triple systems in states of dissolution offer intriguing observational challenges regarding the discovery of these projected temporary trapezium type systems.

Detailed analyses giving the chemical composition have been carried out for twelve K dwarfs. Iron over hydrogen values have been found. Estimates of the masses of these stars are given.

Observational data show that the correlation between the masses of supermassive black holes MBH and galaxy bulge masses Mbulge follows a nearly linear trend, and that the correlation is strongest with the bulge rather than the total stellar mass Mgal. With increasing redshift, the ratio Γ=MBH/Mbulge relative to z = 0 also seems to be larger for MBH≳108.5M⊙. This study looks more closely at statistics to see what effect it has on creating, and observing, the MBH–Mbulge correlation. It is possible to show that if galaxy merging statistics can drive the correlation, minor mergers are responsible for causing a convergence to linearity most evident at high masses, whereas major mergers have a central limit convergence that more strongly reduces the scatter. This statistical reasoning is agnostic about galaxy morphology. Therefore, combining statistical prediction (more major mergers ⟹ tighter correlation) with observations (bulges = tightest correlation), would lead one to conclude that more major mergers (throughout an entire merger tree, not just the primary branch) give rise to more prominent bulges. Lastly, with regard to controversial findings that Γ increases with redshift, this study shows why the luminosity function (LF) bias argument, taken correctly at face value, actually strengthens, rather than weakens, the findings. However, correcting for LF bias is unwarranted because the BH mass scale for quasars is bootstrapped to the MBH–σ* correlation in normal galaxies at z = 0, and quasar–quasar comparisons are mostly internally consistent. In Monte-Carlo simulations, high Γ galaxies are indeed present: they are statistical outliers (i.e., “under-merged”) that take longer to converge to linearity via minor mergers. Additional evidence that the galaxies are undermassive at z≳2 for their MBH is that the quasar hosts are very compact for their expected mass.

We present a matched-filter, surface density map of the “300 km/s” stream recently discovered in the vicinity of the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Segue 1.

Oscillation frequencies were determined for a number of rapidly rotating main sequence stars. However, real seismic probing is still ahead of us. I review here tools that we have for modeling pulsation in rotating stars and their potential application to seismic sounding.

The preliminary results of the analysis of more than 1000 spectra of cataclysmic variables in the archive of the International Ultraviolet Explorer were presented at the meeting. To characterize the slope of the spectra I use F = log(f1460Å/f2880Å). For most spectra F lies between 0.2 and 0.7. No correlation of F with orbital period, inclination, system type or (for dwarf novae) length of the interoutburst interval are found, apart from somewhat lower values of F for DQ Her type systems. Out of 16 dwarf novae for which spectra both at outburst maximum and minimum are available 11 show no large difference in F between maximum and minimum, and in 5 F declines with the flux level. Out of 6 dwarf novae 5 show very red spectra during the rise to maximum, and 1 shows slopes during rise similar to those during decline.

In the ultraviolet resonance lines, due to a wind from the disc, no correlation is found between inclination and terminal velocity.
