Supernovae constitute a critical source of energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM). In this short review, we focus on their latest phase of evolution, the supernova remnants (SNRs). We present observations of three old SNRs that have reached the phase where they interact with the ambient interstellar medium: W28, IC443, and 3C391. We show that such objects make up clean laboratories to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in molecular shock environments. Our studies subsequently allow us to quantify the impact of SNRs on their environment in terms of mass, momentum, and energy dissipation. In turn, their contribution to the energy balance of galaxies can be assessed. Their potential to trigger a further generation of star formation can also be investigated. Finally, our studies provide strong support for the interpretation of γ-ray emission in SNRs, a crucial step to answer questions related to cosmic rays population and acceleration.

As part of a long term observational project, we are investigating the macroturbulent broadening in O and B supergiants (Sgs) and its possible connection with spectroscopic variability phenomena and stellar oscillations. We present the first results of our project, namely firm observational evidence for a strong correlation between the extra broadening and photospheric line-profile variations in a sample of 13 Sgs with spectral types ranging from O9.5 to B8.

A powerful tool to investigate the stability of the orbits of natural and artificial bodies is represented by perturbation theory, which allows one to provide normal form estimates for nearly-integrable problems in Celestial Mechanics. In particular, we consider the orbital stability of point-mass satellites moving around the Earth. On the basis of the J 2 model, we investigate the stability of the semimajor axis. Using a secular Hamiltonian model including also lunisolar perturbations, the so-called geolunisolar model, we study the stability of the other orbital elements, namely the eccentricity and the inclination. We finally discuss the applicability of Nekhoroshev’s theorem on the exponential stability of the action variables. To this end, we investigate the non-degeneracy properties of the J 2 and geolunisolar models. We obtain that the J 2 model satisfies a “three-jet” non-degeneracy condition, while the geolunisolar model is quasi-convex non-degenerate.

Our 2dF Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey (FCSS) and follow-up work in the Virgo Cluster have shown that the cores of both galaxy clusters contain a previously-unknown class of object, ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies. We present high resolution spectroscopy and deep multicolor imaging to show that these enigmatic objects are dynamically distinct from both globular clusters (GCs) and nucleated dwarf galaxies (dE,Ns). Our hypothesis for their origin may explain the observed high “specific frequency” of GCs in central cluster galaxies.

Controversial interpretations of the functioning and evolution of (radio) pulsars are discussed and confronted with the constraints. It is argued that (i) polarized e± bunches are ejected from near the polar caps at high Lorentz factors γ ≳ 102, that (ii) coherent radio pulses are emitted by them during transit to the outer magnetosphere via curvature radiation, (iii) in the shape of (transverse) fan beams, that (iv) there is no indication of magnetic field decay (or buildup), and that (v) pulsars die either by alignment or by interstellar quenching.

The so-called “millisecond” pulsars (outside globular clusters) are likely to be an abundant, young population of fast-born pulsars.

I discuss the connection between the rotation rate of late-type dwarf stars and their level of surface “activity” (as deduced from visible, UV, and X-ray observations) from both theoretical and observational perspectives.

I review the progress in research on intracluster planetary nebulae over the last five years. Hundreds more intracluster planetary nebulae have been detected in the nearby Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, searches of several galaxy groups have been made, and intracluster planetary candidates have been detected in the distant Coma cluster. The first theoretical studies of intracluster planetaries have also been completed, studying their utility as tracers of the intracluster light as a whole, and also as individual objects.

From the results to date, it appears that intracluster planetaries are common in galaxy clusters (10-20% of the total amount of starlight), but thus far, none have been detected in galaxy groups, a result which currently is not well understood. Limited spectroscopic follow-up of intracluster planetaries in Virgo indicate that they have a complex velocity structure, in agreement with numerical models of intracluster light. Hydrodynamic simulations of individual intracluster planetaries predict that their morphology is significantly altered by their intracluster environment, but their emission-line properties appear to be unaffected.

The Crab pulsar was first detected soon after the discovery of pulsars, and has long been studied for its unique traits. One of these traits, giant pulses that can be upwards of 1000 times brighter than the average pulse, was key to the Crab’s initial detection. Giant pulses are only seen in a few pulsars, and their energy distributions distinguish them from normal pulsed emission. There have been many studies over a period of decades to measure the power-law slope of these energy distributions, which provide insight into the possible emission mechanism of these giant pulses.

The 42-foot telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory monitors the Crab pulsar on a daily basis. We have single-pulse data dating back to 2012, containing roughly 1,000,000 giant pulses, the largest sample of Crab giant pulses to date. This large set of giant pulses allows us to do a range of science, including pulse-width studies and in-depth studies of giant-pulse energy distributions. The latter are particularly interesting, as close inspection of the high-energy tail of the energy distribution allows us to investigate the detectability of extragalactic giant-pulsing pulsars. Also, by calculating rates from these energy distributions, we may be able to shed light on a possible link between Fast Radio Bursts and giant pulses.

The observations were carried out in August, 1983 using the 75 cm telescope at Sierra Nevada Observatory in Spain. This telescope is equipped with a six-channel uvbyβ photometer for simultaneous measurements in uvby and the narrow and wide Hβ channels, respectively. The observations were collected during four nights in the four uvby filters and one more night was devoted to measuring β Cas in the n and w bands of the Hβ Crawford system. In all cases, a calibrated neutral filter was used for β Cas. The comparison star was Cl=HR 9085 (V=5.m55, F0III).

The analysis of frequencies was carried out using the Discrete Fourier Transform method, as described in López de Coca et al. (1984), to the observational uvby points collected. The periodograms showed a principal peak at v=9.91 cd−l. After prewhitening for this frequency, the resulting periodograms did not show any trace of another peak, suggesting the monoperiodic nature of this star, in agreement with Antonello et al. (1986). Under the assumption of monoperiodicity of β Cas, the classical O-C method can easily be applied. Nine times of maxima were obtained for the four nights by using the method described in Rodriguez et al. (1990), where each light maximum has been derived as an average over the four uvby bands. When the O-C method was applied, the least squares fit converged to a linear ephemeris with the following elements: To=2445568.d5097 (±0.d0007) and Po=0.d10091 (±0.d00002). This linear ephemeris satisfactorily reproduces our data of β Cas.

Project STAR (Science Teaching through its Astronomical Roots) emerged from growing concern about the decreasing enrollment in science classes, and lack of understanding of science and math concepts (Figure 1). Using astronomy as a focus, Project STAR is trying not simply to increase the enrollment in high school science courses, but also to improve the students’ understanding of science and its role in making sense of the world.

The educational approach of Project STAR is based on three principles:

• Mastery of a few ideas is more important for students than cursory exposure to many concepts.

• Students learn best through hands-on activities.

• Students enter the classroom with certain preconceptions, or “naive theories,” about how physical systems work, without a sense of whether their understandings are accurate (often they are not).

Almost every survey for β Cephei detection has been restricted to the small area of the HR diagram that contained the 15-20 first discovered. (Table 1). Of course, every new short period pulsating star found in such an a priori limited region has strengthened the impression that an instability box could be derived from the study of the statistics of β Cep variables. That conclusion could have led to the discovery of a β Cep pulsation mechanism related to a particular mass - age internal structure status. On the contrary if the phenomenon is due to a mechanism acting in a wider extension of the HR diagram (and so probably better related to envelope properties) one still has to explain why its detection seems to be easier in the B0-B1 zone. Moreover, even within the “instability box” some classical β Cep could be either in core hydrogen burning phase or others in shell hydrogen burning phase, i.e. with quite different internal structures.

Information is currently available for globular cluster systems in almost 50 galaxies from the Milky Way to the Coma Cluster. The observed features of these systems are reviewed, with emphasis on (a) their total populations (specific frequencies), (b) spatial structures compared with the underlying halo light, (c) photometric characteristics (luminosity function and metallicity). The combined evidence suggests strongly that globular clusters are likely to have formed in a rather sharply defined epoch clearly before the bulk of the halo field stars, and that this epoch was more active in E galaxies, especially those in rich environments. Finally, the special role of the supergiant E's at the centers of rich galaxy clusters is reviewed.

Many complex organic molecules and inorganic solid-state compounds have been observed in the circumstellar shell of stars (both C-rich and O-rich) in the transition phase between Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and Planetary Nebulae (PNe). This short (~102-104 years) phase of stellar evolution represents a wonderful laboratory for astrochemistry and provides severe constraints on any model of gas-phase and solid-state chemistry. One of the major challenges of present day astrophysics and astrochemistry is to understand the formation pathways of these complex organic molecules and inorganic solid-state compounds (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, fullerenes, and graphene in the case of a C-rich chemistry and oxides and crystalline silicates in O-rich environments) in space. In this review, I present an observational review of the molecular processes in the late stages of stellar evolution with a special emphasis on the first detections of fullerenes and graphene in PNe.

Numerical simulations of supersonic jets are able to explain the structures observed in many VLA images of radio sources. The improvements achieved in classical simulations (see Hardee, these proceedings) are in contrast with the almost complete lack of relativistic simulations the reason being that numerical difficulties arise from the highly relativistic flows typical of extragalactic jets. For our study, we have developed a two-dimensional code which is based on (i) an explicit conservative differencing of the special relativistic hydrodynamics (SRH) equations and (ii) the use of an approximate Riemann solver (see Martí et al. 1995a,b and references therein).

The identification and observation of planetary nebulae in the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and its companions provide a powerful means of studying their old stellar populations. The direct determination of chemical abundances and radial velocities for even the brightest individual old stars is impossible at the distance of M31. The strongest emission lines of planetary nebulae are as bright as the entire visual continuum of the most luminous giants. Consequently, spectrophotometry of planetary nebulae presently provides the only direct measure of chemical abundances, and, with the exception of globular clusters, the only radial velocity determinations for the old populations.

We use measurements of the rotation curve of the Milky Way by the tangent point method to reconstruct the density model of the Milky Way. The observed inner rotation curve is fitted by a theoretical density model, consisting of a Dehnen bulge, an exponential disc with a hole, and a flattened dark matter halo with a cored isothermal or NFW density profile. The density model is also set to be consistent with the local density constraints in the solar neighborhood.

The characteristics of the various types of B[e] stars are discussed and compared with those of classical Be stars. Both groups of stars are characterized by the presence of emission lines in their spectra, in particular of hydrogen. However, there are also significant differences between these classes. Classical Be stars lack hot circumstellar dust and strong forbidden low-excitation emission lines, which are typical characteristics produced by B[e]-type stars. While classical Be stars are a rather uniform group of early-type stars, B[e]-type stars form a quite heterogeneous group, very often of poorly known evolutionary status, comprising such diverse types of objects as near main-sequence objects, evolved lowmass proto-planetray nebulae and massive evolved hot supergiants. Even pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars sometimes find their way into the group of B[e] stars. However, despite these dissimilarities classical Be stars and B[e]-type stars, share a common property, namely the nonsphericity of their circumstellar envelopes.

We report the first systematic study of the supercluster-void network in the $\Lambda$CDM concordance cosmology treating voids and superclusters on an equal footing. We study the dark matter density field in real space smoothed with the $L_s = 5$ h−1Mpc Gaussian window. Superclusters and voids are defined as individual members of over-dense and under-dense excursion sets respectively. We determine the morphological properties of the cosmic web at a large number of dark matter density levels by computing Minkowski functionals for every supercluster and void. At the adopted smoothing scale individual superclusters totally occupy no more than about 5% of the total volume and contain no more than 20% of mass if the largest supercluster is excluded. Likewise, individual voids totally occupy no more than 14% of volume and contain no more than 4% of mass if the largest void is excluded. The genus of individual superclusters can be $\sim 5$ while the genus of individual voids reaches $\sim 55$, implying significant amount of substructure in superclusters and especially in voids. We have analysed new spectroscopic observations of 22 population I WR stars in a sample defined by b<12.5 mag, 18h<α<6h, δ > −30°. This completes the search for orbital duplicity among all of the 30 pop I WR stars contained within these limits. We thus have an unbiased data base in a volume segment bounded by a distance of 3–4 kpc for WNE and WC stars , and 4–5 kpc for WNL stars Although more observations are still needed in some cases, we have found several new binary systems. Some of these are low-amplitude, single-line binaries, often with runaway velocities and/or large separations from the galactic plane. We consider them to be candidates for a WR + collapsar stage, as originally predicted by Tutukov and Yungelson (1973) and de Loore and De Grève (1975).
