Different experimental conditions at a versatile high-energy beamline equipped with a two-dimensional detector have been compared for powder diffraction and pair distribution function (PDF) experiments. In particular, sample size and sample to detector distances have been evaluated on a standard sample, to evaluate their effects in both Q and real space. Two illustrative cases are also discussed. The average structure and local distortions in a BaTiO3 powder with 100 nm particle size show that spurious ripples in the PDF are suppressed by increased counting statistics. Effects of small amounts of a crystalline impurity phase on a SiO2.Al2O3.Na2O.CaO glass have been quantified.

A ternary compound Al3CoNd2 was synthesized and its crystal structure parameters were determined by the Rietveld refinement method based on powder X-ray diffraction data. Results show that the compound crystallizes in the MgCu2-type structure (cubic Laves C15 phase, space group $Fd\bar{3}m$), with the lattice parameter of a = 7.8424(2) Ǻ, unit-cell volume of V = 482.33 Å3, and calculated density of Dcalc = 5.90 g.cm−3. The residual factors converge to Rp = 0.1024 and Rwp = 0.1287. The reference intensity ratio value obtained experimentally is 3.03. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate an agreement with the Curie–Weiss law in the temperature range of 385–450 K, and paramagnetic Curie temperature of θp = 379.9 K. Both rare-earth elements and cobalt ions contribute to the paramagnetic moment. The saturation magnetic moment and magnetic hysteresis loop were measured for the Al3CoNd2 compound at various temperatures. Results show that the saturation magnetic moment value decreases with an increase in temperature and the compound becomes a ferromagnet below the Curie temperature Tc.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for a novel platinum-based anticancer complex cis-[diiodo(1R,2R)-1,2-diaminocyclo-hexane-κN,κN′] platinum(II), Pt(C6H14N2)I2, are presented [a=14.048(4) Å, b=7.588(3) Å, c=11.502(4) Å, β=98.446(5)°, space group C2, cell volume=1212.80 Å3, and Z=4]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the C2 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The crystal structures of Ca1.5Mn0.5V2O7 (I) and Ca1.5Cd0.5V2O7 (II) synthesized by the citrate method and by a conventional solid-state reaction, respectively, were determined using X-ray powder diffraction data. It was found that the compound I has a monoclinic crystal structure a = 4.88563(9) Å, b = 11.21279(22) Å, c = 5.69643(11 Å), β = 96.376(7)°, V = 310.132(10) Å3 (space group P21/c), Z = 2). Compound I has a narrow homogeneity region Ca1.5±0.1Mn0.5±0.1V2O7. The vanadate Ca1.5Cd0.5V2O7 crystallizes in the triclinic system with the parameters a = 6.66139(6) Å, b = 6.93019(7) Å, c = 7.02211(6) Å, α = 85.4404(9)°, β = 63.7505(7)°, γ = 82.5515(10)° и V = 288.201(5) Å3 (space group P$\bar 1$, Z = 2). It is one of the formulations of the primary solid solution, formed as a result of the substitution of part of the calcium cations for cadmium cations in Ca2V2O7.

The crystal structure of ivermectin hemihydrate ethanolate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Ivermectin hemihydrate ethanolate crystallizes in space group C2 (#5) with a = 40.9374(10), b = 9.26951(6), c = 14.9488(2) Å, β = 73.047(1)°, V = 5426.12(8) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure consists of layers of ivermectin molecules parallel to the bc-plane. The water and ethanol molecules reside in small voids in the structure. The water molecule, the ethanol molecule, and hydroxyl groups act as donors in O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Several C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds were detected. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

As a consequence of substantial advances in computer-aided design and manufacturing technology, engineering parts are no longer restricted to combination of simple geometrical shapes. Implementing complex curved surfaces in engineering components in combination with finite-element geometry optimization has become a prevalent means of designing a part. Measuring residual stresses using X-ray diffraction (XRD) on complex curved surfaces requires further development of current measurement methods. Here we investigate how a laboratory XRD system equipped with a five-axis stage and two-dimensional detector can execute sin2ψ residual stress measurements on curved surfaces. Shadowing that blocks the diffracted beam to reach the detector was avoided using proper rotations and tilting of the sample. A standard video-laser alignment system commonly used to manually place the sample in the center of diffraction was used to also generate virtual maps of the sample's curved surfaces on a fine mesh grid. The geometry was then used for setting the required rotations and tilt angles. A set of diffraction frames collected using this method on a model zirconia dental ceramic, afforded the opportunity to superimpose phase and stresses on a complex geometry. This is a step forward for the XRD technology, and its usefulness applies to many different industries.

Additional crystallographic data are given for the recently reported mineral middlebackite, which has been described for discoveries at Iron Knob in South Australia and Passo di San Lugano near Trento, Italy. The material examined in the present study was from a third finding of the mineral, viz. from a quartz outcrop at Mooloo Downs Station in Western Australia within which it was co-located with the chemically- and structurally-related mineral moolooite, CuIIC2O4·nH2O, reported by Clarke and Williams (1986). In this study, the crystal structure was elucidated independently of the other studies using a combination of the a priori charge flipping and simulated annealing methods with synchrotron radiation diffraction (SRD) powder data. The principal crystal data for the Mooloo Downs material are: space group P21/c with lattice parameters a = 7.2659(18) Å, b = 5.7460(11) Å, c = 5.6806(11) Å, β = 104.588(3)°; Vc = 229.46(18) Å3; empirical formula CuII2C2O4(OH)2 with 2 formula units per unit cell; and calculated density = 3.605 g cm−3. The lattice parameters agree approximately with values given for the other studies, but not within the reported error estimates. The atom coordinates, interatomic distances, and angles for the Mooloo Downs material are compared with those from the other studies using single crystal data, with the values from all three studies agreeing approximately, but again not within the reported uncertainties. The crystal chemistry found for middlebackite received strong confirmation through the synthesis for the first time of di-copper oxalate di-hydroxide. Laboratory X-ray diffraction powder data for the synthetic form of the mineral from this study agree closely with the SRD data for the natural mineral.

Surface roughness is a critical factor affecting the performance of dental implants. One approach to influence this is through sandblasted, large grit, acid-etched (SLA) modification on pure titanium implant surfaces. In this study, SLA was performed on grade IV pure titanium. Sandblasting was conducted at distances of 2, 4, and 6 cm. Subsequently, the samples were etched with a mixed acid solution of HCl, H2SO4, and H2O for 0, 30, and 60 min. Surface roughness and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations were conducted on the samples. The results revealed that surface roughness increased but was not too significant as the sandblasting distance decreased. Longer etching durations for sandblasted with acid-etched samples led to reduced surface roughness (Sa and Sz). It was found that a 60 min-etched sample resulted in optimal Sa, Sz, and Ssk values, i.e., 1.19 μm, 13.76 μm, and −0.60, respectively. The XRD texture was significantly influenced by sandblasting, with compressive residual stress increasing as the sandblasting distance decreased. Normal stress causes hill formations at shorter sandblasting distances. For etched samples, the residual stress decreased with longer etching durations. Normal stress-decreasing trend aligns with the initial reduction in hill and valley within the samples and subsequent hill enhancement at extended etching duration.

X-ray powder diffraction data for the trigonal form of disilver trihydrogen paraperiodate, Ag2H3IO6, are reported. The cell parameters are a=5.941 89(3), c=12.7253(1) Å, V=389.089(6) Å3, and ρ=5.65 g cm−3 for Z=3. A full-profile Rietveld refinement confirms the monophasic nature of the sample and the presence of two-dimensional corrugated layers of the A2BO6 type linked by hydrogen bonds. Short unsupported Ag–Ag contacts (about 3.02 Å) of the argentophilic type are also shown.

The X-ray diffraction data for the single phase UAl4 are reported. The data were obtained with a Huber–Guinier diffractometer with MoKα1 radiation. The unit cell of UAl4 is orthorhombic (space group Imma) with lattice parameters a=4.396 Å, b=6.251 Å, and c=13.699 Å.

Ba2NaNb5,O15 and eighteen additional compositions in the NaNbO3-BaNb2O6 system from 60 to 85 mole % BaNb2O6 have been prepared and studied by X-ray powder diffraction. A calculated pattern has been used to aid in indexing the powder pattern of stoichiometric Ba2NaNb5O15(BNN-S). The lattice parameters of BNN-S have been determined from repeated measurements of 2 higher order reflections and are a=b=17.5994(8)Å and c=7.9771(9)Å. A comparison with the Powder Diffraction File (PDF) 34-210 indicates that the present data provide a more precise match to the unit cell, include additional weak reflections and cover a greater 2θ range. There is a tungsten bronzetype solid solution range from 60 to 75 mole % BaNb2O6.

Cu2Th4(MoO4)9 is cubic: a=14.4856(1) Å, space group I4¯3d, Z=4. Its crystal structure was recently determined using a single crystal. The results of chemical study allow one to reject the existence of Li4Th7(MO4)16 and La(MO4)(ReO4) compounds with M=Mo, W, reported as isostructural with Cu2Th4(MoO4)9. Precise X-ray powder patterns are established for Cu2Th4(MoO4)9 and isotypic compounds Li2Th4(MoO4)9, Li2Th4(WO4)9, and La4(MoO4)3(ReO4)6.

The incommensurately modulated structure of Bi2Sr2Eu1.3Ce0.7Cu2O10.17, with a = 5.4752(4) Å, b = 5.4522(3) Å, c = 17.860(1) Å, Z = 2, was refined by the GJANA program [Gao et al., Acta Cryst. A 49, 141 (1993)] from X-ray powder data in C:C2mb: 111 four-dimensional space group (Rov = 0.064, Rm = 0.041, Rsat = 0.202, Rp = 0.049, Rwp = 0.065). Displacive modulation parameters of all cations and oxygen atoms in the Bi-layer were involved in the refinement. Obtained results including the modulation parameters are in agreement with those found for the similar phase Bi2Sr1.7Nd1.8Ce0.5Cu2O10+δ from single-crystal data [Mironov et al., J. Solid State Chem. 109, 74 (1994)].

Calcium sodium iminodisulphonate trihydrate was first described by Divers and Haga [J. Chem. Soc. 943–968, (1892)]. It has recently been found as one of several crystalline products resulting from the removal of sulphur dioxide from flue gas. It has not so far been included in the ICCD powder diffraction file.
