The article explores how, when and why Pirro Ligorio (c. 1513–83) chose to link a sanctuary dedicated to Minerva Medica, listed in the fourth-century ad Regionary Catalogues of the monuments of Rome as being on the Esquiline, with the late antique decagonal pavilion, near Termini, which had the second largest dome in Rome after the Pantheon. It establishes that the catalyst was the unearthing of several statues, including one of Minerva, in 1552. The fate of these finds is examined, as well as Ligorio's attempt to locate the mysterious Schola Medicorum on the same site.

Alcuni murali medievali sopravvivono nell'abbazia cistercense delle Tre Fontane a Roma, o sono conosciuti da disegni, nell'edificio soprastante l'ingresso, nel nartece della chiesa di SS. Vincenzo ed Anastasio e nell'area orientale del chiostro. Studi recenti hanno discusso lo stile e l'iconografia di questi dipinti o hanno analizzato l'architettura della chiesa medievale e di parti del monastero. Questo articolo prende in considerazione i murali nel loro contesto architettonico. The stretch of the Aurelianic Walls from the Porta Latina to the Porta Appia comprises twelve towers linked bv curtain walls with covered walkways. The surviving state of the monument is described in detail. The individual phases (from AD 275 to the present) are distinguished through the analysis of their construction techniques, archive drawings and photographs of vanished sections, papal coats of arms, and inscriptions (in pencil or graffito) recording more recent events. When the entire circuit was doubled in height during the Honorian phase (AD 401–3), the floors of the towers were built at a considerably higher level than the rampart walkways, so as to exploit fully the type of siege machinery (halhstae) located in the towers' upper chambers. The Honorian loopholes, for the use of archers, reveal a long and complex history: undergoing modifications during construction, they were subsequently blocked to prevent the illegal traffic of goods (and the avoidance of customs dues), and were finally reopened and modified once again for the defence of papal Rome. The modern restorations of 1930–67 are examined critically. The need for immediate restoration and sustained maintenance to guarantee the monument's structural integrity is now clear. It is to be hoped that a direct link (with visitor access) will be provided with the ‘Museo delle Mura’, which was set up in the neighbouring Porta Appia in 1970.

King Charles II's first illegitimate son, the little-known Jacques de La Cloche, married a lady in Naples and had a posthumous son, born in 1669 and known as Don Giacomo Stuardo. Although his father was illegitimate and he himself a Catholic, Stuardo hoped that he might one day become King of England. The Glorious Revolution resulted in opposition between supporters of the Protestant Succession to the British thrones and supporters of the exiled Catholic Stuarts, James II and then his son James III. When the Protestant Queen Anne was succeeded by the unpopular Hanoverian George I in 1714, James III was still unmarried and had no children, so Stuardo hoped that James might recognize him as the Jacobite heir. When James married and had two sons, Stuardo hoped that his cousin would at least receive him as a Stuart prince. All his attempts to meet James III and secure recognition were unsuccessful, and he died disappointed and in poverty in about 1752. In the tercentenary of the Hanoverian Succession, enough archival information finally has emerged to provide a study of the life of this alternative claimant to the British thrones.

The article begins by looking at the body of written and visual material that was produced on the colonial world in the interwar years. It considers various reading strategies that can be applied to this body of work and how it can be addressed through post-colonial criticism. The article argues that the work of the sociologist Peter Berger offers a series of insights into the way in which this material represents the social world, and the notions of collective identity and alterity that are central to that world. In the light of Berger's thinking on the socially constructed nomos, the essay examines some of the definitions of the relation between metropolitan and subject communities that recur in writings on the reality of colonialism. The essay explores the relationship of an individual author to the nomos of his or her time by looking in detail at one text: the journalist Ciro Poggiali's diary of the time he spent in Ethiopia in the immediate aftermath of the Italian conquest of the country. It examines how Poggiali's diary can be interpreted as a complex account of how the coerciveness of the social world is experienced by individual consciousness and how its definitions of racial and cultural belonging can be appropriated or challenged. The essay concludes by arguing that the analysis of strategies for defining identity and otherness within the Italian colonial context can be taken further by working within a comparative framework.

Chi, per il primo, s'occupo del problema offerto dagli excusati pugliesi e dello ἑξκονσατικίον che su di essi gravava fu, se non erro, il Beltrani nella sua memoria intitolata, Documenti Longobardi e Greci dell'Italia meridionale. Fra questi pubblicò una sentenza data nell'anno 1054 da Argiro duca e principe d'ltalia, per decidere una lite insorta fra tali Romualdo figlio d'un altro Romualdo, Niso e Rufo figli di Landenolfo, da un lato, e Sasso figlio di Pietro, dall'altro, che i primi pretendevano fosse loro escusato. Il processo ci offre uno svolgimento tutto longobardo: infatti, poiché gli attori non avevano alcun documento che attestasse l'asserita condizione di Sasso, Argiro ordinò a quest'ultimo di prestare insieme a dodici congiuratori, il giuramento purgatorio e quegli lo prestò, attestando di non avere mai dato agli attori lo ἐξκονσατικίον. In seguito a tale giuramento, Argiro emise una sentenza favorevole pienamente al convenuto.

Sin dai primi studi sul cantiere e sul processo costruttivo delle architetture antiche, esempi storicamente ben documentati di età medievale e moderna sono stati presi come riferimento e termine di paragone, al fine di comprendere più approfonditamente l'industria delle costruzioni nell'antica Roma. Questo contributo riflette circa la possibilità di utilizzare due casi di studio parzialmente simili per dimensioni, ubicazione e tecniche costruttive: la Basilica di San Pietro, di età rinascimentale e barocca, in comparazione con l'antico complesso di Domiziano, estensione dei Palazzi Flavi sul Palatino. I primi risultati, che si iscrivono in un progetto di studio sul Complesso domizianeo, aggiungono nuovi elementi alla ricostruzione teorica del cantiere e del ciclo costruttivo. Si analizzano diversi aspetti di questi due progetti architettonici di grandi dimensioni (XXL structures) – la committenza, la forza lavoro, l'approvvigionamento dei materiali da costruzione, l'allestimento del cantiere – evidenziando analogie e differenze, nel tentativo di ovviare alle lacune nella documentazione antica.

This article continues my catalogue of the objects from Lord Savile's excavations at Lanuvium, of which the first instalment appeared in these Papers (Vol. VII. pp. 63–91), and completes my task as far as concerns the contents of the Museum at Leeds. As it has been decided not to attempt to include here the numerous small objects of lesser importance from the site, which are in the British Museum, but are not yet included in any volume of the Catalogue, the contents of this, the final, instalment consist of the following:—(1) the remainder of the objects in all materials in the Museum at Leeds; (2) such objects in the British Museum as have been published already, either by the discoverer in Archaeologia, or in the various volumes of the Catalogue concerned. It will be seen that by far the most important and extensive part of the latter consists of the objects of terracotta. The republication of these, in extenso, is necessary for the proper understanding of the Leeds pieces, and enables the whole of this material to be presented simultaneously.

Si tratta della prima parte di una relazione sul lavoro archeologico portato avanti dalla British School at Rome nell'area dell'Ambasciata Britannica a Porta Pia negli anni '60 e nel 1991/2.

Durante l'estate del 1969 una piccola trincea fu aperta immediatamente dietro le mura aureliane della città, che in quest'area erano state ricostruite nel 1564. Furono riconosciute tre principali fasi dell'occupazione romana, la prima forse consistente di un terrazzamento a giardino probabilmente dell'inizio del secondo secolo d.C. L'area fu in seguito occupata da un angolo di un edificio industriale, possibilmente una fullonica. La terza fase era rappresentata dalla costruzione delle mura della città, nel 271-5 d.C. Un livello di scarico associato con la costruzione delle mura conteneva detriti derivanti da alcune tombe contigue e materiale ceramico risalente circa al 275 d.C.

Il lavoro condotto in altre zone dell'area dell'Ambasciata ha portato allo studio di un mosaico monocromo con una scena marina, databile al periodo approssimativamente compreso fra il 140 e il 270 d.C., nonchè un dettagliato rilevamento della miniera di pozzolana del XVI e XVII secolo.

In the Via del Portico d'Ottavia at Rome, close by the Theatre of Marcellus, there still stands the propylaeum of the Porticus Octaviae, from which the street took its name. The inscription on the architrave records the restoration of the building by Septimus Severus and Caracalla in A.D. 203, but passes over in silence the previous history of the site. For that we are dependent largely on literary sources, chief among which is a passage of Velleius Paterculus, in which he records the building-activities of Q. Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus (cos. 143, censor 131 B.C.), the conqueror of Andriscus: Hic est Metellus Macedonicus, qui porticus, quae fuerunt circumdatae duabus aedibus sine inscriptione positis, quae nunc Octaviae porticibus ambiuntur, fecerat, quique hanc turmam statuarum equestrium quae frontem aedium spectant, hodieque maximum ornamentum eius loci, ex Macedonia detulit. … Hic idem primus omnium Romae aedem ex marmore in iis ipsis monumentis molitus <huius> vel magnificentiae vel luxuriae princeps fuit.

Velleius' statement, that the site of the Porticus Octaviae had formerly been occupied by a Porticus erected by Metellus, is clear, and adequately confirmed elsewhere. Less clear is what he says about the two temples, which we know from other evidence to have been dedicated to Juppiter Stator and Juno Regina.
