Sedimentological data acquired by thin section petrography is a rich source of information to better understand and interpret depositional environments that are dominated by fine-grained deposits. This study provides an evaluation of the sedimentological and geochemical changes recorded over Upper Viséan to Lower Namurian successions preserved in a core section from a well drilled in the southern part of the Netherlands. Facies analysis and the recognition of microfacies associations allow detailed interpretations of depositional environments. Interpretation of additional geochemical data acquired by portable X-ray fluorescence analyses has resulted in a chemostratigraphic zonation for the core section. The zonation reflects stratigraphic changes in the mineralogy of the sedimentary successions. Integration of the microfacies associations and the chemostratigraphic zonation has led to the identification of three so-called depositional zones, which show the development of depositional settings from Late Viséan to Early Namurian times. Depositional Zone 1 consists of fine-grained turbiditic limestones and mudstones deposited in a distal carbonate ramp setting during Latest Viséan times. The overlying Depositional Zone 2 corresponds to the Geverik Member (Lower Namurian) and is particularly heterogeneous in geochemical and lithological terms: the zone reflects a complex interplay between different parameters such as sediment source, transport mechanisms and oxygen content that are assumed to be governed by fluctuating sea levels and changing depositional environments (from basinal to shallow marine settings). Sandy lenticular mudstones are predominant in the lower part of Depositional Zone 2 and show that sedimentation was via erosive bedload, whilst the common fossiliferous mudstones present within the upper part of the same zone yield evidence for increased endobenthic activity in dysoxic conditions. The successions assigned to Depositional Zone 3 ( = Epen Formation – Namurian) are the products of cyclic sedimentation of a terrestrial sourced delta.

An isolated, completely ossified vertebra tentatively ascribed to the non-cyamodontid placodont Pararcus diepenbroeki is described from the Anisian Vossenveld Formation in Winterswijk, the Netherlands, and compared to other material from the same locality. This fossil is the first completely ossified vertebra of the taxon and most likely originates from an adult specimen. It was recovered c. 16 m deeper in the stratigraphy than previously described material of the species, which is thus far known only from Winterswijk. Based on the slanting angle of the transverse process, the vertebra is interpreted to originate from the dorsal region. Besides the overall agreements in morphology that warrant a tentative identification as Pararcus diepenbroeki, the newly described vertebra deviates from other known Pararcus vertebrae in the presence of a longer, well-ossified neural spine and a strongly constricted, less pachyostotic and ovaloid vertebral centrum. General agreement in morphology with previously described vertebrae suggests this novel condition indicates a different anatomical position and perhaps a varied ossification pattern.

Sediment facies provide fundamental information to interpret palaeoenvironments, climatic variation, archaeological aspects and natural resource potentials since they are summary products of depositional processes, environmental conditions and biological activities for a given time and location. The conventional method of facies discrimination relies on macroscopic and/or microscopic determination of sediment structures combined with basic physical, chemical and biological information. It is a qualitative measure, depending on observer-dependent sedimentological descriptions, which cannot be reanalysed readily by further studies. Quantitative laboratory measurements can overcome this disadvantage, but are in need of large sample numbers and/or high temporal resolution, and are time-, labour- and cost-intensive. In order to facilitate an observer-independent and efficient method of facies classification, our study evaluates the potential of combining four non-destructive down-core scanning techniques: magnetic susceptibility (MS), X-ray computed tomography (CT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and digital photography. These techniques were applied on selected sections of sediment cores recovered around the island of Norderney (East Frisian Wadden Sea, Germany). We process and integrate the acquired scanning measurements of XRF elemental intensities, represented by principal components, MS, CT density and lightness of eight sediment facies previously recognised by conventional facies analysis: moraine, eolian/fluvial, soil, peat, lagoonal, sand flat, channel fill and beach-foreshore. A novel type of density plot is introduced to visualise the digitised sediment information that allows an observer-independent differentiation of these facies types. Thus, the presented methodology provides the first step towards automated supervised facies classification with the potential to reproduce human assessments in a fully reproducible and quantitative manner.

This paper reports the discovery of an in-situ striated, far-travelled, oversized clast in the Ardleigh Gravels of the Kesgrave Sands and Gravels of the River Thames at Ardleigh, east of Colchester in Essex, eastern England. The morphology, petrography and geochemistry of the clast, and the sedimentology of the host deposit are described. The striations are interpreted, on the basis of their sub-parallelism and the shape and sub-roundedness of the clast, as glacial and the clast is provenanced to Ordovician rocks of the Llŷn and Snowdonia regions of North Wales. On the basis of clast frequency within the Colchester Formation gravels of the Kesgrave Sands and Gravels it is inferred that glaciers reached the Cotswold region of the Thames catchment. Floe-ice transport during spring flood is invoked for movement from the glaciated region to eastern England. The paper discusses the possible age of the glaciation and recognises that it is difficult to be more precise than a cold stage in the early Middle Pleistocene (MIS 18, 16 or 14). Attention is drawn to the possibility of glaciation associated with a diamicton in the region of the Cotswold Hills known as the Bruern Till, but stresses the need for new work on this deposit.

The Pleistocene College Farm Silty Clay Member of the Creeting Formation at Great Blakenham, Suffolk, south-east England is shown to contain indigenous and recycled dinoflagellate cysts and other derived palynomorphs. The indigenous dinoflagellate cysts indicate a marine influence during deposition of the clay, whilst the other palynomorphs demonstrate derivation of sediment from a wide catchment of Carboniferous, Jurassic and Cretaceous bedrocks. It is argued, by comparison with palynological data from the Chillesford Clay Member of the Norwich Crag Formation some 25km to the east, that these sediments were eroded from western, south-central and south-eastern Britain, and transported by the early River Thames to its estuary, where they were redeposited at the western margin of the Crag Basin, during the Early Pleistocene Tiglian TC3 Substage. This interpretation refines earlier research which concluded the College Farm Silty Clay was deposited in a predominantly freshwater environment, such as a lagoon, without any direct access to the sea or major river.

We describe a tetrapod swimming traceway from the Middle Triassic Vossenveld Formation of the Netherlands. Forty-five individual traces, each consisting of two parallel claw drag marks, were followed over 9 m in a roughly east–west direction. The asymmetry of the traceway geometry indicates the trace maker negotiated a lateral current. The trace maker could not be identified, but the traces described here are markedly different from Dikoposichnus traces attributed to swimming nothosaurs.

From dynamic rupture simulations, we reveal under which conditions a rupture in the Groningen gas field stops along fault dip or along fault strike after it starts on a fault in the reservoir. The simulations focus on the capabilities of fault plane irregularities to arrest ruptures. Such irregularities can be recognised in sandstone outcrops. Fault planes in the Groningen field, extracted from the 3D seismic data by seismic attribute extraction methods, show similar irregularities. A detailed surface of a major fault plane in the field indicates that steps and jogs of tenths of metres are possible. Although these irregularities are close to seismic resolution and could be partially artificial, we investigated their effect on rupture arrest.

For typical current stresses in the Groningen field, jogs and steps of this length scale are found to be remarkably effective to stop ruptures in the reservoir. Also, a significant increase in the fault dip along fault strike can stop these ruptures but a kink in the fault under a constant fault dip not.

Including non-planar fault features and pressure diffusion in the Carboniferous, the simulations in this paper follow trends of previous simulations in the literature using 2D planar faults. In particular, the horizontal stress in this formation and the strength of the Carboniferous fault zone are important for rupture propagation. If the fault would have been reactivated in the Neogene or Quaternary and poorly healed in clay-rich parts, rupture propagation into the Carboniferous can only be prevented by jogs of sufficient size and lateral continuity under the present estimate of the horizontal field stress.

Faults in the Roer Valley Rift System (RVRS) act as barriers to horizontal groundwater flow. This causes steep cross-fault groundwater level steps (hydraulic head differences). An overview of the size and distribution of fault-related groundwater level steps and associated fault zone permeabilities is thus far lacking. Such an overview would provide useful insights for nature restoration projects in areas with shallow groundwater levels (wijstgronden) on the foot wall of fault zones. In this review study, data on fault zone permeabilities and cross-fault hydraulic head differences were compiled from 39 sources of information, consisting of literature (starting from 1948), internal reports (e.g. from research institutes and drinking water companies), groundwater models, a geological database and new fieldwork. The data are unevenly distributed across the RVRS. Three-quarters of the data sources are related to the Peel Boundary Fault zone (PBFZ). This bias is probably caused by the visibility of fault scarps and fault-adjacent wet areas for the PBFZ, with the characteristic iron-rich groundwater seepage. Most data demonstrate a cross-fault phreatic groundwater level step of 1.0 to 2.5 m. Data for the Feldbiss Fault zone (FFZ) show phreatic cross-fault hydraulic head differences of 1.0 to 2.0 m. In situ measured hydraulic conductivity data (K) are scarce. Values vary over three orders of magnitude, from 0.013 to 22.1 m d−1, are non-directional and do not take into account heterogeneity caused by fault zones. The hydraulic conductivity (and hydraulic resistance) values used in three different groundwater models are obtained by calibration using field measurements. They also cover a large range, from 0.001 to 32 m d−1 and from 5 to 100,000 days. Heterogeneity is also not taken into account in these models. The overview only revealed locations with a clear cross-fault groundwater level step, and at many locations the faults are visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks or as soil moisture contrasts at the surface. Therefore, it seems likely that all faults have a reduced permeability, which determines the size of the groundwater level steps. In addition, our results show that cross-fault hydraulic head gradients also correlate with topographic, fault-induced offsets, for both the Peel Boundary and the Feldbiss fault zone.

The reconstruction of submerged palaeolandscapes and detection of settling surfaces along coastal zones became a major research topic within the last two decades. In this context, the WASA project made use of a multidisciplinary approach for defining the extension and describing the characteristics of the Late Pleistocene to Holocene deposits in the central Wadden Sea region. In addition to sub-bottom transects, more than 140 sediment cores were taken in such an area for stratigraphic reconstruction, making use of multi-proxy analysis. To harmonize these data with the existing regional core database (LBEG archive) a new core catalogue was developed, that allows the identification of the local Late Quaternary sedimentary sequences and their characteristic facies. The WASA core catalogue has been successfully applied for reviewing the published data about the stratigraphic sequence of the Wadden Sea, for a better definition in terms of stratigraphic sequences and spatial extent of the Quaternary geological evolution of the region, and for a detailed reconstruction of the coastal palaeoenvironments.

The Boom Clay is being investigated as a host rock for disposal purposes of radioactive wastes. Although the formation is relatively uniform and homogeneous, there are embedded septaria bodies (carbonates) or layers of septaria that may constitute a problem regarding the integrity of the clay. It is therefore essential to locate these geobodies, particularly with seismic experiments. Since the medium shows strong attenuation it is necessary to correct for this amplitude loss if true amplitudes of the reflections are required when imaging these bodies after the stack. To achieve this task, we implement a reverse-time migration algorithm based on a dispersionless anelastic rheology, that is, the phase velocity and attenuation factor are frequency independent, and back-propagation is performed with a negative quality factor, Q. The algorithm is tested on synthetic data. For this we assume that the septaria are diffractors generating waves synchronously to simulate a stacked seismic section, that is, the result of an exploding-reflector experiment. In this case, back-propagation is stopped when all the diffraction points are imaged at the same time. The examples consider layers of septaria and isolated septaria embedded in homogeneous and inhomogeneous Boom Clay with zones of low Q. The amplitude of the geobodies is recovered and the resolution is improved, even in the presence of noise.

Prediction of gas-production-induced subsidence and seismicity is much more difficult and uncertain than generally recognised in the past. It is now widely accepted that uncertainties in predicted subsidence and seismicity are large prior to and during the initial stages of production. At later stages, predictions remain highly uncertain for periods more than three to five years into the future. This requires a different regulatory framework to ensure that associated risks remain within accepted boundaries. Previously, single-scenario operator predictions were checked against field measurements. When subsidence or seismicity started to deviate beyond claimed uncertainties, the operator was asked to provide prediction updates. The practice was long considered acceptable, as structural damage to buildings and infrastructure or personal risk to people was not expected. This all changed following the 2012 Huizinge seismic event, necessitating better identification, assessment and ranking of risks, the use of scenarios, probabilistic forecasting and a much intensified field monitoring and control loop. It requires that the regulator becomes actively involved in assuring the integrated control loop of risk identification, predictions, monitoring, updating, mitigation measures and the closing of knowledge gaps, to ensure that subsidence (rate) and induced seismicity remain within acceptable limits. And it requires that this increased involvement of the regulator is supported in the mining law and by appropriate conditions in the Production Plan assent.

An equilibrium dune-erosion model is used every six years to assess the capability of the most seaward dune row on the Dutch Wadden islands to withstand a storm with a 1 in 10,000 probability for a given year. The present-day model is the culmination of numerous laboratory experiments with an initial cross-shore profile based on the central Netherlands coast. Large parts of the dune coast of the Wadden islands have substantially different dune and cross-shore profile characteristics than found along this central coast, related to the presence of tidal channels, ebb-tidal deltas, beach-plains and strong coastal curvature. This complicated coastal setting implies that the predictions of the dune-erosion model are sometimes doubtful; accordingly, a shift towards a process-based dune-erosion model has been proposed. A number of research findings based on recent laboratory and field studies highlight only few of the many challenges that need to be faced in order to develop and test such a model. Observations of turbulence beneath breaking waves indicate the need to include breaking-wave effects in sand transport equations, while current knowledge of infragravity waves, one of the main sand transporting mechanisms during severe storm conditions, is strongly challenged by laboratory and field observations on gently sloping beaches that are so typical of the Wadden islands. We argue that in-situ and remote-sensing field observations, laboratory experiments and numerical models need to be the pillars of Earth Scientific research in the Wadden Sea area to construct a meaningful process-based dune-erosion tool.

The Pannonian basin in Central Europe is well known for its rich geothermal resources. Although geothermal energy has been utilised, mainly for direct use purposes, for a long time, there are still a lot of untapped resources. This paper presents novel methods for outlining and assessing the theoretical and technical potential of partly still unknown geothermal reservoirs, based on a case study from the Dráva basin, one of the sub-basins of the Pannonian basin along the Hungarian–Croatian border. The presented methods include reservoir delineation based on combining geological bounding surfaces of the Upper Pannonian basin-fill units with a set of isotherms deriving from a conductive geothermal model. The geothermal potential of each identified reservoir was calculated by a Monte Carlo method, which was considered as being represented by the heat content of the fluids stored in the effective pore space (‘moveable fluid’). The results underline the great untapped geothermal potential of the Dráva basin, especially that of the reservoir storing thermal water of 50–75°C, which has the largest volume and the greatest stored heat content.

When dealing with stratigraphic successions in marginal basin settings, the geological record is often fragmented due to erosion and reworking processes. The North Sea Basin is an example: it has a fragmented Quaternary record; in particular, Middle Pleistocene intervals are poorly known. As a result, we have little insight into climate, marine environmental conditions and biodiversity in this period. Here we describe and discuss a succession of three interglacial marine mollusc-bearing intervals in a borehole from Ameland in the northern Netherlands (borehole B01H0189 near Hollum). These intervals are attributed to marine isotope stages MIS7, MIS5e and MIS1. The Holocene Celtic type of faunas (interval 0–26.24 m below surface (b.s.)) and Eemian Lusitanian type of faunas (26.24–30.40 m b.s.) are well-known from previous research. The newly reported MIS7 Oostermeer fauna (32.80–39.00 m b.s.) represents mostly full marine settings between storm wave base and fair-weather wave base. In composition and diversity, the MIS7 and MIS1 faunas strongly resemble and differ from the MIS5e fauna. This is the first well-documented record of three stacked marine interglacial assemblages from the southern North Sea Basin at one location. This new record enables us to make complete marine faunal characterisations of successive interglacial periods. Key implications for southern North Sea stratigraphy and palaeogeography are the resemblance of marine faunas and conditions in MIS7 and MIS1, the presence of a relatively warm latest MIS6 freshwater interval and confirmation and characterisation of the warm Eemian interval north of the classical type area.

The Rupel Clay member in the Netherlands largely corresponds to the Boom Formation in Belgium, and this marine, clay-rich deposit is a potential candidate to host radioactive waste disposal facilities. Prediction of the speciation of radionuclides in Rupel Clay pore water and their retardation by interactions with Rupel Clay components requires knowledge about the composition of Rupel Clay pore water, the inventory of reactive solids and understanding of interactions between Rupel Clay and pore water. Here, we studied Rupel Clay material which was obtained from cores collected in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, and from drilling cuttings retrieved from a drilling in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. Pore water was obtained by mechanical squeezing of Rupel Clay material from Zeeland. Additionally, anaerobic dilution experiments were performed in which the clay material was suspended with demineralised water or a 0.1M NaHCO3 solution. Solid-phase characterisation included determination of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur contents, measurement of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and sequential extraction of iron phases.

In contrast to the pore water in Belgian Boom Clay, pore water collected from the location in Zeeland has a higher salinity, with chloride concentrations corresponding to 70–96% of those in seawater. The high chloride concentrations most likely result from the intrusion of ions from saline waters above the Rupel Clay in Zeeland. Cation exchange during salinisation might account for the observed deficit of marine cations (Na, K, Mg) and excess of Ca concentrations, in comparison with seawater. The measured CEC values at both locations in the Netherlands vary between 7 and 35 meq(100g)−1 and are, for most samples, in the range reported for Boom Clay in Belgium (7–30meq(100g)−1).

Pore water and solid-phase composition indicate that Rupel Clay from Zeeland has been affected by oxidation of pyrite or other Fe(II)-containing solids. When coupled to the dissolution of calcium carbonates, oxidation of pyrite can account for the elevated sulphate and calcium concentrations measured in some of the pore waters. The relatively low concentrations of pyrite, organic carbon and calcite in the Rupel Clay in Zeeland, in comparison to Limburg, might be an indicator for an oxidation event. Higher contents of dithionite-extractable Fe in Rupel Clay in Zeeland (0.7–2.6mg Fe / g clay) than in Limburg (0.4–0.5mg Fe / g clay) might also be a consequence of the oxidation of Fe(II) minerals. Oxidation in the past could have accompanied partial erosion of Rupel Clay in Zeeland before deposition of the Breda Formation. However, indications are given that oxidation occurred in some of the pore waters after sampling and that partial oxidation of the cores during storage cannot be excluded. Results from dilution experiments substantiate the influence of equilibration with calcium carbonates on pore water composition. Furthermore, removal of dissolved sulphate upon interaction with Rupel Clay has been observed in some dilution experiments, possibly involving microbial sulphate reduction.

A geochemical soil survey was carried out on the island of Curaçao in October 1992 as part of an overall geochemical characterisation of the three Leeward islands of the Netherlands Antilles. The aim of this soil survey was to provide systematic geochemical data of the rural soils of Curaçao for characterisation, geochemical mapping and environmental application. A total of 122 samples was collected from the topsoils (upper 0.1 m) within a rectangular grid (2 km2). All samples were sieved to a grain size of < 2 mm and analysed for 24 elements by ICP-AES, after decomposition with hot aqua regia. A small, selected set of soil samples was subjected to a more extensive study of soil properties.

It appears from statistical data interpretation of the chemical compositions with techniques like non-linear mapping and cluster analysis that the topsoils of Curaçao can be divided into six homogeneous groups (soil types) with contrasting chemical signatures. Labelled according to their dominant geology, soil process or most striking characteristic, these soil types are defined as follows: sandy limestone soil type, Midden Curaçao soil type, arid/calcareous soil type, basalt West soil type, agriculture-influenced soil type, and the basalt East soil type.

Geochemical contour maps were made that provide a basis for environmental issues on the island. Finally, background levels (baseline data) were derived from the chemical soil composition of several elements, taking into consideration the correlation with the Fe or Al content of these soils. The defined baselines can be used to establish background values for future soil surveys.

Aeolian sands are the main reservoir rock in some of the largest gas fields, such as the Shell-Exxon Groningen Field, operated by NAM. Although aeolian reservoirs have been studied for many years, there is still room for improvement in the predictive modeling of such reservoirs. A pilot project with this objective was initiated by SIEP B.V. in 1997, together with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK and with Uppsala University, Sweden, to evaluate the factors influencing aeolian systems, and to formulate a forward model using ‘fuzzy logic’.

The project was initiated to develop a fuzzy system for generic modeling of aeolian architectures. The key aims were to be able to predict the type, amount and distribution of major facies in generic aeolian systems and specifically to model regional-scale architecture in the sub-surface. Fuzzy rules and sets, which defined the behaviour of aeolian systems, were constructed and used to modify the pre-existing fuzzy modeling software which had been designed for shallow and deep marine systems. The modeling procedure used input data appropriate to the Rotliegend climate, and was validated by comparing the resulting models, in terms of thickness and spatial distribution of facies types, to well data from the Upper Rotliegend interval of the Lauwerszee Trough area, NE Netherlands (Figures 1 & 2).

This paper focuses on unravelling the 1st millennium AD in the present-day Netherlands and the applicability of modelling when studying the past. By presenting the results of several studies analysing changes (or persistence) in connectivity and habitation patterns, the significance of these findings for (spatial) modelling is derived. The transition between the Roman and early-medieval periods is particularly interesting in this respect as it is characterised by severe pan-European political, socio-economic and demographic changes. Additionally, recent studies in geosciences increasingly point to marked climatic and landscape changes, such as river avulsions and floods, occurring at the same time. The extent to which these environmental and cultural dynamics were entwined and mutually influential is generally unknown, especially on larger-scale levels. Lowlands, such as the Netherlands, are especially suited to study these complex interactions since boundary conditions, i.e. the set of conditions required for maintaining the existing equilibrium in a region, in such areas are particularly sensitive to change.

In this paper the combined results of several recently developed landscape-archaeological models are presented. These models spatially analyse natural and cultural dynamics in five manifestations: route networks, long-distance transport, settlement patterns, palaeodemographics and land-use systems. Combined, these manifestations provide information on connectivity, persistence and habitation, key concepts for the cultural landscape as a whole. Results show that only by integrating these modelling outcomes is it possible to reconstruct boundary conditions and high-resolution spatio-temporal frameworks for cultural-landscape change. Equally, these models invite reflection on their applicability and, as such, point to the need for new theoretical framing and the development of more multi-proxy, evidence-based and transdisciplinary research approaches in archaeology. The evident interrelationship between cultural and natural-landscape dynamics necessitates a more integrated and transparent research attitude, covering multiple scales and studying the cultural landscape as a whole. Only then can models reflect historical reality as closely as possible.

Since 1991, several provinces in the Netherlands have put much effort in establishing soil-quality monitoring networks. The purpose of these networks is to provide insight in the trends in (geochemical) soil quality, on which new policies for environmental protection can be based, such as restrictions in certain landuse types and cleaner production processes. The soil quality networks are yet too young to serve this goal. Monitoring efforts are concentrated on micro- and macro-elements, particularly in the top layer of the soil (mainly heavy metals and PAH) as well as phreatic groundwater (mainly nitrates and phosphates) in the various regions of a province. The regional soil-quality monitoring networks focus explicitly on diffuse environmental pollution in the rural areas, which means that sample sites influenced by soil pollution caused by local sources are excluded. Regional differences in soil quality in the rural areas are primarily caused by chemical and physical differences in the natural soil composition and by differences in deposition loads (direct and indirect). Hydrological conditions can also exert a large influence, particularly for nitrate leaching. This leads to three major criteria which the network design is based upon: (1) soil type, (2) landuse (assumed to be representative for deposition), and (3) groundwater tables. Subregions are formed by combining these criteria. Subregions are considered to be more or less homogeneous at a regional scale with respect to the criteria named. Within each region, a pre-calculated number of sites, based on variability of present concentrations, have been sampled and the sample material has been analyzed. Descriptive statistical parameters could thus computed; they are the base for the geochemical soil mapping of the individual, homogeneous subregions.

A recent evaluation of all operational soil-quality monitoring networks shows that these networks are effective instruments to gain insight into the differences in quality of the soil and the phreatic groundwater between the various regions. The understanding of these differences and the processes that caused them provide the provincial authorities with valuable information for policy making and environmental management. The evaluation also reveals differences in network designs, mostly due to local differences in physical-chemical properties and political choices.

It can be concluded from the first results of the networks that the relative high loads of zinc and copper, caused by spreading manure on the farmlands in areas of intensive agricultural landuse, have led to notably higher concentrations of these elements in the top layer of the soil compared to more natural lands like forested areas. The fact that the intensive agricultural landuse is mainly situated on relatively highly permeable sandy soils results in high nitrate concentrations in the phreatic groundwater, up to concentrations far beyond EG drinking-water target levels. First monitoring results signalled several environmental problems of which most of the policy makers were already aware, but could not quantify. Delineation of the most vulnerable areas and/or areas with unacceptably high loads and quantification of concentrations of different elements enable regional governments to take appropriate measures.

The soil-quality monitoring networks will focus in the coming years on the effectiveness of the measures taken in the various areas. Efforts are being made to integrate the relatively new soil-quality monitoring networks and the longer existing groundwater-quality monitoring networks to achieve a better understanding of the (bio)geochemical cycling processes. Tuning the individual regional soil-quality monitoring networks of the various provinces will enable the provision of additional information about soil quality at a larger scale.
