An ‘Al-thermometer’ was applied to agate samples of volcanic parent rocks to provide information about the temperature of agate formation. The temperatures were calculated from concentrations of [AlO4]0 centres determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. The calculations for agate bands in some cases yield temperatures of up to 655°C, which are assumed to be invalid; they are thought to be artifacts resulting from non-equilibrium crystallization processes. In contrast, the formation temperatures (60–198°C) estimated for associated quartz incrustations within the agate geodes are in good accord with those calculated from oxygen isotope data. Direct estimation of the formation temperatures of agates is problematic. The best results will be obtained by analyses of associated phanerocrystalline quartz incrustations.

Nahcolite (NaHCO3) is identified and recorded for the first time from an igneous rock. Often associated with it is another carbonate mineral tentatively identified as kalicine (KHCO3), which has not previously been recorded as a primary mineral in any rock. These minerals occur in inclusions in apatite crystals in ijolites and carbonatites, and indicate that both ijolite and carbonatite magma must have been considerably richer in soda and potash than is indicated by the chemical analyses of the rocks. The identification was made by a combination of microchemical, solubility, crystallographic, and optical determinations.

A giant chondrule, nearly 4 cm in diameter, has been found in the Parnallee meteorite, and is described, with analysis. An estimate of the composition of the partly devitrified groundmass falls within the known compositional range of chondrule glasses. The bulk composition of the chondrule is very close to the bulk composition of the meteorite excluding metal and sulphide.

An examination of a specimen of aguilarite from the type locality provides new data on the chemistry and structure of this mineral. The chemical formula of the crystal used for the structural study is (Ag3.98 Cu0.02)(Se0.98 S0.84 Te0.18), on the basis of 6 atoms. The mineral was found to be monoclinic, crystallizing in space group P 21/n, with a = 4.2478(2), b = 6.9432(3), c = 8.0042(5) Å , β = 100.103(2)º, V = 232.41(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure [refined to R1 = 0.0139 for 958 reflections with I > 2 σ (I)] is topologically identical to that of acanthite, Ag2S. It can be described as a body-centred array of tetrahedrally coordinated X atoms (X = S, Se and Te) with Ag2X3 triangles in planes nearly parallel to (010); the sheets are linked by the Ag1 silver site, which has twofold coordination.

Aguilarite is definitively proved to be isostructural with acanthite; it does not have a naumannite-like structure, as previously supposed. Our data support the hypothesis that there are two solid solution series in the system: a monoclinic 'acanthite-like' series (from Ag2S - Ag2S0.4Se0.6), and an orthorhombic 'naumannite-like' series (from Ag2S0.3Se0.7-Ag2Se). This is supported by data gathered on synthetic counterparts. Aguilarite remains as a valid as a mineral species, but it should be described as the Se-analogue of acanthite.

In this study we also (1) review the history of the aguilarite; (2) compare properties of synthetic and natural aguilarite; and (3) demonstrate how earlier researchers erred in describing aguilarite as orthorhombic.

The Te-bearing composition of the studied aguilarite crystal suggests the possibility of a solid solution with cervelleite (Ag4TeS).

Recent advances in computer simulation at the atomic scale have made it possible to probe the structure and behaviour of the cores of dislocations in minerals. Such simulation offers the possibility to understand and predict the dislocation-mediated properties of minerals such as mechanisms of plastic deformation, pipe diffusion and crystal growth. In this review the three major methods available for the simulation of dislocation cores are described and compared. The methods are: (1) cluster-based models which combine continuum elastic theory of the extended crystal with an atomistic model of the core; (2) dipole models which seek to cancel the long-range elastic displacement caused by the dislocation by arranging for the simulation to contain several dislocations with zero net Burgers vector, thus allowing a fully periodic super-cell calculation; and (3) the Peierls-Nabarro approach which attempts to recast the problem so that it can be solved using only continuum-based methods, but parameterizes the model using results from atomic-scale calculations. The strengths of these methods are compared and illustrated by some of the recent studies of dislocations in mantle silicate minerals. Some of the unresolved problems in the field are discussed.

We make the first report of fluid inclusion data from a black dolomite matrix breccia from the Irish orefield which confirm a relatively high-temperature hydrothermal origin. Breccia matrix dolomite formed from NaCl-dominated fluids with temperatures primarily in the range 150–220°C and salinities of 13–20 wt.% NaCl equivalent, comparable with inferred ore-stage fluids at the Silvermines, Tynagh, Lisheen and Navan deposits. The spread in salinity is considered to be due to mixing of a moderate salinity (~12 wt.%), higher temperature fluid, probably derived from the Lower Palaeozoic metasedimentary basement, with a low temperature brine. Non-stoichiometric, black dolomites are therefore considered to be a product of relatively high-temperature hydrothermal processes involving the principal orefluid in Ireland, and thus their occurrence is believed to be a prime exploration indicator.

Earlier, coarse white dolomite, texturally similar to regional dolomite cements commonly observed in the Irish Midlands, precipitated from fluids in the temperature range 140–200°C and salinities of 10.3–13.5 wt.% NaCl equivalent. This is comparable with the higher temperature, moderate salinity end-member inferred for the black dolomite. These data call into question a uniquely low-temperature burial origin for coarse white dolomite cements in Ireland. Paragenetically late low-Mg calcites were formed as a result of an influx of relatively low salinity fluids.

Rengeite, Sr4ZrTi4Si4O22, is a new member of the perrierite–chevkinite group found in the jades from the Itoigawa-Ohmi district, central Japan. It is monoclinic, P21/a, a = 13.97(1), b = 5.675(7), c = 11.98(1)Å, β = 114.26(8)°, V = 866 Å3 and Z = 2. The six strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are 3.12 (s) (40-3), 3.05 (vvs) (31-3), 2.99 (vs) (311), 2.84 (s) (020), 2.74 (s) (004), 2.20 (s) (31-5). Electron microprobe analysis gave SiO2 22.58, TiO2 29.88, ZrO2 9.49, Nb2O5 0.24, Ta2O5 0.07, Al2O3 0.20, FeO 0.10, CaO 0.43, SrO 34.32, BaO 0.13, La2O3 0.00, Ce2O3 0.38, Pr2O3 0.10, Nd2O3 0.29, Sm2O3 0.04, total 98.25 wt.%, corresponding to (Sr3.62Ca0.08Ce0.03Nd0.02Ba0.01Pr0.01)∑3.76 (Zr0.84Ti0.09Al0.04Fe0.02Nb0.02)∑1.01Ti4.00Si4.11O22 on the basis of O = 22. The unitcell parameters and chemical composition imply that rengeite is the Sr and Zr-analogue of perrierite or high-β analogue of strontiochevkinite. It is transparent, dark brown with adamantine lustre. Its streak is pale greenish brown, and no cleavage was observed. The hardness is VHN100 606–698 kg mm−2 (Mohs 5–5.5). The calculated density is 4.12 g cm−3. It is strongly pleochroic from pale green to pale greenish brown where the REE contents are <1 wt.% and pale violet to greenish brown where the REE contents are between 3 and 10 wt.%. It occurs as anhedral grains in close association with titanite, zircon and tausonite in a pebble of blue titanian omphacite-jadeite rock from the seashore of Oyashirazu, Ohmi Town, in a boulder of lavender-coloured Ti-bearing jadeitite from the bed of the Kotaki-gawa river, Itoigawa City, and in a boulder of green jade from the bed of the Hime-kawa river, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, central Japan. Rengeite is considered to have crystallized by interaction between pre-existing minerals (rutile, anatase, titanite and zircon) and Sr-rich metamorphic fluid during later stage activity of high-P/T metamorphism. The name is for Mt. Renge near the locality and the Renge metamorphic belt where jadeitite deposits are found.

Hydrothermal almost pure potassium feldspar (adularia) forms incrustations on fissured wall rocks in an active geothermal environment. Measured max. temperature, 265 °C, and concentration of K+ and Na+ cations in the geothermal fluid require K-feldspar and Na-feldspar to be deposited under equilibrium conditions. On fissure walls only K-feldspar is precipitated, whereas andesine phenocrysts of host rocks are replaced by both K-feldspar and Na-feldspar, and groundmass of host rock is replaced by K-feldspar.

Optical data indicate that K-feldspar forming incrustations is partly monoclinic, partly triclinic. The triclinic material displays polysynthetic and ‘microcline’-like twinning, though X-ray diffractograms indicate only monoclinic structure. A primary origin for the triclinic adularia is postulated. Wairakei hydrothermal K-feldspar, max. 0·5 Myr old, is compared with Arkansas adularia 287 or 214 Myr old, also containing both monoclinic and triclinic material. The comparison suggests that, after crystallization, the structural state of adularia changes little, if at all, during geological time.

The nepheline syenites of the Pilansberg alkaline complex (South Africa) have undergone extensive subsolidus equilibration and alteration with a deuteric Cl- and Na-rich fluid phase. Complex assemblages of secondary minerals result from the replacement of primary alummosilicates, rinkite, eudialyte and fluorapatite. The composition of apatite group minerals formed during these alteration processes reflects the Sr- and rare earth element (REE) content, Na/Cl ratio and pH of the deuteric fluids. Apatite-group minerals are observed to have formed in the following sequence: orthomagmatic fluorapatite; strontian britholite-(Ce); strontian fluorapatite; Sr-apatite; REE-rich Sr-apatite; Sr-Na-REE- rich minerals approaching the stoichiometry of belovite-(Ce) and deloneite-(Ce); britholite-(Ce). Increasing alkalinity of the deuteric fluids is reflected by increasing amounts of Sr replacing Ca in apatite and culminates in the formation of Sr apatite containing 62.1 wt.% SrO (∼4.17 a.p.f.u. Sr). Pilansberg apatite-group minerals form a near-complete solid solution between fluorapatite and a fluorine analogue of Sr apatite with limited solution towards belovite-(Ce), Si-rich belovite-(Ce) and strontian britholite-(Ce).

Experiments were performed to investigate the transformation of natural aragonite crystals to calcite by reaction with aqueous solutions of calcium carbonate at hydrothermal conditions for different periods of time. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were used to characterize the reaction product. The results indicate that the replacement of aragonite by calcite follows an interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism.

Chemical analyses of the Lorne volcanic rocks show that the basalts and andesites are a closely related suite of lavas, notably rich in alkalis, especially potassium. The rhyolites of the Lorne area do not appear to form a continuous series with the more basic rocks. The various lava types are compared with the plutonic rocks of the area, and a relationship is suggested between the basic lavas and appinitic intrusions. The acid lavas are not comparable to granites in the area.

The late orogenic igneous activity in this part of the Caledonides therefore appears to involve three generations of magma, produced separately but within a short time of one another. The assumption that all the late Caledonian igneous rocks of the Scottish Highlands are differentiates of a common parent magma is not justified.

The observations of hour-glass sector zoning from four selected clinopyroxenes in undersaturated lavas best fit a model in which the sector zoning is formed due to a structural requirement in a growth direction normal to {100} where a high concentration of silicate units, required to build the silicate chains, is unsatisfied. In these sectors Al substitutes for Si, the charge balance being maintained by octahedral substitutions, of which Ti contributes to the deeper colour of the sectors. The presence of concentric zoning only reflects a change in temperature and a change in the composition of the liquid during crystallization of the pyroxene.

New data on sulphur valence and magmatic oxidation state for Central Andean volcanic rocks, in combination with published data for experimental and natural samples, allow derivation of a simple relationship between magma oxidation state and sulphur speciation. For a number of highly oxidized Central Andean volcanic rocks fO2 has been calculated using magnetite-ilmenite or olivine-spinel pairs and the sulphur valence in glasses has been measured using the peak shift of S-Kα radiation relative to a pyrite standard. Previously published experimental and natural data have been incorporated with a wider range in fO2 and S valence. The variation in sulphur speciation (as S2- or SO42-) as a function of log fO2 is described by an empirical polynomial fit which reproduces the data to within ±0.5 log units and allows use of electron microprobe measurements of the S-Kα wavelength shift for estimation of magmatic oxygen fugacities. This approach is applicable for fO2 between FMQ-2 and FMQ+6, encompassing most terrestrial magmas. The method has been used to calculate the in fO2 conditions under which melt inclusions were trapped in andesitic magmas before magma mixing in two Central Andean volcanoes, and to calculate the oxygen fugacity of a slowly-cooled pyroclastic flow in which the Fe-Ti oxide phases have subsequently re-equilibrated. In combination with Fe-Ti oxide data, two distinct trends emerge for Lascar volcano. Basaltic andesite-andesitic magma chambers follow T-fO2 trends which parallel the FMQ buffer curve, indicating ferrous-ferric iron buffering of oxygen fugacity. Dacitic anhydrite-bearing magmas with admixed basaltic andesite and andesite follow trends of increasing fO2 with decreasing temperature, indicative of buffering of fO2 by SO2-H2S in a co-magmatic gas phase. This trend continues into the metamorphic aureole of the magma chamber, resulting in highly oxidized (close to magnetite-hematite) conditions.

High-resolution imaging of electron-transparent samples using a scanning electron microscope, here termed low voltage (LV) STEM, is a new and valuable technique for studying Earth and planetary materials. The most effective method of LV-STEM imaging uses a pair of electron detectors positioned side-by-side beneath the thin sample. The detector directly underlying the sample forms bright-field images dominated by mass-thickness contrast. Activation of the detector offset from the sample yields dark-field images with a greater component of atomic number contrast. LV-STEM images with significant diffraction contrast can also be obtained, but require careful positioning of the sample relative to the electron detectors. In this study LV-STEM was used successfully to image sub-μm sized kaolinite crystals and tens of nm-sized etch pits on the gold-coated surfaces of weathered feldspar grains. Dark-field LV-STEM was also especially effective for characterizing very fine-scale intergrowths of Mg- and Fe-rich phyllosilicates within uniformly thin samples of the Murchison meteorite prepared using the focused ion beam (FIB) technique. LV-STEM is a quick and easy method for characterizing the morphology and internal structure of mineral and rock samples and may prove to be especially useful in geomicrobiology research.

Italian carbonatites form part of a suite with melilitites, normally an association characteristic of continental interiors; the perfect analogue of the Italian suite being the kamafugites (from the type area in SW Uganda, where the western branch of the East African Rift Zone cuts across the craton). The latter are commonly attributed to plume generation, whereas the Italian carbonatites, strung along the Appennine front, are usually linked to subduction. Evidently these two mechanisms are not essential, since neither can apply in both provinces. This conclusion is re-inforced by the related magmatism registered in both provinces in the Cretaceous. Phlogopite is ubiquitous in the mantle debris, and compositions from the two provinces overlap. Xenolithic phlogopites are distinct from cognate micas in the lavas, and from the carrier melt compositions, with similar distribution patterns in both suites. Kamafugitic magmas must be products of exceptional conditions, and added to the many near-identical magmatic features, the Italian and Ugandan volcanoes have sampled similar mantle conditions. Although the large scale geodynamic regimes are in total contrast, as are the deep mantle tomographic structures, the crucial common factor at the igneous province level is extensional tectonics. Extension, promoting release of volatiles (esp. CO2), is the vital trigger for this small volume, primary magmatism.

Although moissanite has been found in various rocks, reliable primary moissanite has been reported only from kimberlites and meteorites. The Dabie Mountain moissanite reported in this paper is the first occurrence of primary moissanite hosted by serpentinite. It differs from synthetic silicon carbide in optical properties, inclusions and infrared spectrum. The biaxiality of the Dabie Mountain moissanite is thought to be the result of intracrystal deformation. In reference to the ultrahigh pressure (7—8 GPa) signature of exsolution of rod-like apatite, clinopyroxene and rutile in garnets, and magnetite lamellae in olivine reported in the Dabieshan, we inferred that the moissanite from the Dabie Mountains was probably generated at a depth of 180 km; and then subducted to a depth of 210—250 km, where the moissanite became biaxial before its exhumation.

Recent diamond-anvil cell experiments are providing windows of unprecedented clarity on the interiors of the Earth, other planets, and their moons from high P-T studies of the materials that comprise these bodies. With recent advances in techniques, the component minerals can be examined with a growing array of in situ methods over an expanding range of conditions that extend to hundreds of gigaspascals in pressure and thousands of degrees in temperature. Such investigations reveal that major, if not profound, changes in physical and chemical properties of these materials occur with depth. This information is crucial for understanding the materials basis of regional to global structure and processes documented by a wealth of recent observational and geophysical data. This paper reviews selected recent studies of major planet-forming minerals, focusing on key examples that illustrate different microscopic origins of macroscopic behaviour. This comparative mineralogical approach provides insight into phenomena occurring over a wide range of length scales. For terrestrial planets, the high-pressure behaviour of representative silicates, oxides and sulphides is examined. This includes the silicate perovskite assemblages that form the bulk of the Earth's lower mantle, for which a number of new findings concerning effects of non-stoichiometry and defect properties, pressure-induced electronic and magnetic transitions, and rheology have been obtained. High P-T studies of Fe-Ni alloys, together with various light elements, provide constraints on the composition, structure and dynamics of terrestrial planet cores. Water is a key component of many planetary bodies; as ice it undergoes numerous high-pressure transformations and as a volatile component it is involved in potentially important high P-T mineral reactions and is incorporated in dense mineral phases. Striking behaviour is observed in other molecular systems, including CO2 and CH4 and their mixtures with H2O; these form new phases, some relevant at the relatively modest conditions of deep marine sediments, others at the extreme states found in the deepest planetary interiors. Additional high P-T interactions between rare gases and ices and silicates are also documented. For the large planets, the most abundant ‘mineral’ is hydrogen, which has been shown to undergo novel mineral/gas reactions, possibly in cloud decks deep within the dense atmospheres of these bodies.

A pink-purple diamond crystal from the Internatsional'naya kimberlite pipe (Siberia) was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques using an area detector. Direct indexing of the diffraction pattern suggested a primitive hexagonal unit cell [ahex = 2.513(4), chex = 6.172(11) Å], instead of the well known face-centred cubic unit cell (acub ∼3.567 Å). Theoretical considerations and diffraction pattern simulation showed that the hexagonal diffraction pattern is the result of the superposition of two diffraction patterns with cubic symmetry due to spinel-law twinning along (111). These data are in good agreement with previous analyses of deformation microtwins in natural pink-purple diamonds using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The results suggest that natural epigenetic plastic deformation of diamonds occurs not only by dislocation slipping but also as a result of mechanical twinning.

The volcanic rocks of the Şarkışla area in northeastern central Anatolia are associated with volcaniclastics, turbiditic limestones and pelagic-hemipelagic shales of Upper Cretaceous-Palaeocene age. A preliminary geochemical study was undertaken to constrain local tectonic models, and due to the variable altered nature of the volcanics, determine the lithological composition and magma type. Chemically the volcanics are an andesite-dominated suite of calc-alkali lavas, probably developed adjacent to an active continental margin in a local (ensialic back-arc?) basinal area. The volcanic activity was probably related to a postulated magmatic arc just south of the area during the early Tertiary.

Three groups of amphibolites within the Moine rocks of Sutherland have been analysed for twenty-six elements by XRF analysis. (1) Very rare epidotic hornblende schists within pelite, possibly derived from volcanic ash deposited penecontemporaneously with the pelite (2 analyses). (2) Major and minor bodies of ‘early Moine’ schistose garnetiferous amphibolite intruded early in the deformational sequence (41 analyses). (3) Small bodies of ‘Loch a' Mhòid metadolerite’, intruded later in the deformational sequence (23 analyses). Rare Moine ultrabasites are associated with these metadolerites and probably formed from the same magma as olivine cumulates. These ultrabasites (5 analyses) are chemically distinct from Lewisian ultrabasites (both in the basement sheets within the Moine rocks of Sutherland and in the foreland Lewisian rocks) and from the Glen Urquhart ultrabasic body (3 analyses).

Using variation diagrams it is inferred that chemical variation in these amphibolites is due largely to pyroxene and plagioclase crystallization in the early amphibolites and olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase crystallization in the Loch a' Mhòid metadolerites and ultrabasites, followed in both cases by high-level fractionation. This has led to high values of incompatible elements in many of the early amphibolites. Although geochemical discrimination diagrams tend to give ambiguous results for many of these rocks, the early amphibolites are shown to be tholeiitic in nature with a chemistry transitional between within-plate and island-arc type basaltic magma. The Loch a' Mhòid metadolerites are mildly alkaline within-plate type basaltic magma.
