The new minerals cuatrocapaite-(NH4) (IMA2018-083) and cuatrocapaite-(K) (IMA2018-084) are the NH4- and K-dominant members of a series with the general formula (NH4,K)3(NaMg□)(As2O3)6Cl6·16H2O. Both minerals were found at the Torrecillas mine, Iquique Province, Chile, where they occur as secondary alteration phases. Both minerals occur as hexagonal tablets up to ~0.3 mm in diameter. They are transparent, with a vitreous lustre and white streak. For both, the Mohs hardness is ca. 2½, the crystals are somewhat flexible, but not elastic, the fracture is irregular and the cleavage is perfect on {001}. The measured densities are 2.65(2) and 2.76(2) g/cm3 for the NH4- and K-dominant species, respectively. Optically, cuatrocapaite-(NH4) is uniaxial (–) with ω = 1.779(3) and ε = 1.541(3) and cuatrocapaite-(K) is uniaxial (–) with ω = 1.777(3) and ε = 1.539(3) (white light). The minerals are insoluble in acids, but decompose in NaOH(aq). The empirical formulas, determined from electron-microprobe analyses, are (NH4)2.48Na1.66Mg0.87K0.09(As12O18.05)Cl5.88·16.02H2O and K2.68Na1.33Mg0.93(NH4)0.31(As12O18.01)Cl6.16·16.04H2O. The minerals are trigonal, space group R${\bar 3}$m; the cuatrocapaite-(NH4) cell parameters are a = 5.25321(19), c = 46.6882(19) Å, V = 1115.80(9) Å3 and Z = 1; the cuatrocapaite-(K) cell parameters are a = 5.2637(15), c = 46.228(8) Å, V = 1109.2(7) Å3 and Z = 1. The structures, refined for cuatrocapaite-(NH4) to R1 = 1.78% for 544 Io > 2σI reflections, contain four types of layers: (1) a planar neutral As2O3 (arsenite) sheet; (2) an (${\rm NH}_{\rm 4}^{\vskip -2pt\rm \scale65% +} $,K+) layer that links adjacent arsenite sheets; (3) a Cl– layer placed on the As side of each arsenite; and (4) a layer containing partially occupied Na, Mg and H2O sites that is flanked on either side by Cl layers. The layer sequence for the type 1, 2 and 3 layers is identical to the Cl–As2O3–K–As2O3–Cl layer sequence in the structures of lucabindiite and gajardoite.

Syntheses in acidified hydrothermal (HT) solutions (1 N H2SO4 or stronger) produce monoclinic non-stoichiometric K-jarosites which contain Fe-site vacancies with long-range order. Syntheses in non-acidified HT solutions produce rhombohedral K-jarosites which contain relatively large numbers of Fe-site vacancies with no long-range order. Increasing the [Fe]/[K] ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time in non-acidified solutions promotes the formation of monoclinic jarosites which contain Fe-site vacancies with short-range order. A structural model including details of the ordering of the Fe-site vacancies was obtained by refinement of single-crystal synchrotron data from one of the HT synthesis products; this model was used to refine synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data from products synthesized at different reaction times, temperatures and [Fe]/[K] ratios. Thermal and chemical analyses are consistent with a model for non-stoichiometry in which domains of stoichiometric jarosite are intergrown with butlerite-like iron-deficient domains with a composition [Fe2(SO4)2(OH)2(H2O)4]. It was found that heterogeneous nucleation of monoclinic jarosite on Si disks is preceded by the formation of an oriented film of Maus's Salt, K5Fe3O(SO4)6·10H2O, as a precursor phase, and that this transforms topotactically into oriented jarosite, which contains butlerite-like layers parallel to the disk surface. Structural models for the transformation of Maus's Salt into jarosite are proposed.

Fluids trapped inside fluid inclusions in quartz from the multiphase Starav monzogranite in Etive, Argyll, were extracted under vacuum and quantitative data for H2O and CO2 were obtained manometrically. Na and K were determined on an aqueous leach from the decrepitated grains. A bivariate diagram of H2O/CO2 versus Na/K discriminates between magma pulses and mirrors the whole-rock trace-element chemistry. This work shows that compositional variations of fluids in quartz from a weakly mineralised granitoid intrusion are sensitive indicators of its magmatic history and identify subtle changes in its mineralogical composition.

Blue pleochroic crystals obtained from basic slag were first described by Carnot and Richard. They published a chemical analysis, some of the optical properties, and a brief description of the forms they observed. The crystals were stated to be orthorhombic, with a composition of 5CaO.P205.SiO2. Several authors later described similar crystals. None, however, gave a thorough account of the optical properties. These various papers were summarized and discussed by Kroll, who accepted Carnot's formula, but concluded, from Bücking and Linck's examination, that the material was monoclinic. Kroll applied the rather unfortunate term ‘silico-carnotite’ to these crystals.

The present work shows that silicocarnotite occurs in only one modification–orthorhombic. The crystals drawn by Bricking and Linck and described as monoclinic are, in fact, identical with our orthorhombie crystals.

The new mineral wrightite, K2Al2O(AsO4)2, was found in 1983 at a fumarole on the Second scoria cone, Northern Breakthrough, Great Fissure eruption, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia, where it occurs as light yellow aggregates of transparent tabular crystals, with an average size of 0.05 mm × 0.03 mm × 0.005 mm. Wrightite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with the unit-cell parameters a = 8.230(5), b = 5.555(4), c = 17.584(1) Å, V = 803.9(6) Å3 and Z = 4 (from powder data). The empirical formula is (K1.69Na0.38)Σ2.07(Al1.80Fe0.24)Σ2.04As1.96O9. The crystal structure (R1 = 0.043) consists of Al2O(AsO4)2 layers in the ab plane with clusters of edge-sharing AlO6 octahedra. Each layer contains two independent isolated AsO4 tetrahedra and two AlO6 octahedra. AlO6 octahedra are linked by edges, forming zigzag chains along the b axis inside the Al–As layer. Eight- and six-coordinated K atoms are located in the interlayer space between Al2O(AsO4)2 layers. The mineral is biaxial (−), α =1.679(2), β =1.685(2), γ (calc.) =1.687; 2V(meas.) = 62(10)° (λ = 589 nm). The strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are: 8.77(36)(002); 4.458(17)(111); 4.010(19)(201,013); 3.875(19)(104) and 2.972(100)(015). The mineral was named in honour of Adrian Carl Wright, Emeritus Professor at the University of Reading, UK.

Zolotarevite (IMA2020-076), ideally Na5Zr[Si6O15(ОН)3]⋅2–3H2O, is а new mineral of the lovozerite group. The mineral was found in a leucocratic nepheline syenite from Kedykverpakhk Mt., Lovozero alkaline massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia. It occurs as anhedral grains up to 1 mm across and is associated with microcline–perthite, nepheline, sodalite, aegirine, lamprophyllite, lueshite, umbozerite, lomonosovite, nastrophite, a mineral of the kazakovite–tisinalite series, sphalerite and löllingite. Zolotarevite is cherry red, with a vitreous lustre and white streak. The mineral is brittle, with a Mohs hardness of 5. Cleavage was not observed; the fracture is uneven. The measured density is 2.75(5) g⋅cm–3, the density calculated using the empirical formula and single-crystal unit-cell parameters is 2.85 g⋅cm–3. Zolotarevite is anomalously biaxial (–), α = 1.580(2), β = 1.600(2) and γ = 1.602(2) (for λ = 589 nm); 2Vmeas < 10°. Chemical data (electron microprobe, wt.%) are: Na2O 20.41, СаО 0.42, MnO 3.49, Fе2O3 0.55, SiO2 52.46, ТiO2 1.34, ZrO2 11.33, H2O (calculated from the structural formula) 10.20, total 100.20. The empirical formula based оn 6 Si atoms per formula unit is Na4.53Zr0.63Mn0.34Ti0.11Ca0.05Fe3+0.05Si6O14.43(ОН)3.56(H2О)2.11. Zolotarevite is trigonal, space group R${\bar 3}$m, with a = 10.294(6) Å, c = 13.115(8) Å, V = 1203.7(16) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal data and refined to R1 = 0.049. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 7.37 (69) (101); 5.26 (56) (012); 3.686 (64) (202); 3.330 (79) (113); 3.265 (99) (211), 2.640 (100) (024) and 2.576 (60) (220). Zolotarevite is unique in that it is a highly hydrated lovozerite-group mineral with the B site occupied by variable amounts of H2O.

Bosoite (IMA2014-023) is a new silica clathrate mineral containing hydrocarbon molecules in its crystal structure. Bosoite can be considered structurally as a silica analogue of the structure-H gas hydrate, where guest molecules are trapped in cage-like voids constructed of the host framework. The mineral occurs in the Miocene tuffaceous sedimentary rocks at Arakawa, Minami-boso City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Bosoite is hexagonal, and it crystallises as an epitaxial intergrowth on chibaite crystals, with the {0001} of bosoite parallel to octahedral {111} form of chibaite. Crystals are colourless and transparent with vitreous lustre. The calculated density is 2.04 g/cm3. The empirical formula (based on 2 O apfu and guest molecules assumed as CH4) is Na0.01(Si0.98Al0.02)Σ1.00O2⋅0.50CH4; the end-member formula is SiO2⋅nCxH2x+2. Bosoite has the space group P6/mmm, with the unit-cell parameters a = 13.9020(3) Å, c = 11.2802(2) Å, V = 1887.99(6) Å3 and Z = 34. The crystal structure of bosoite was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and converged to R1 = 4.26% for the average model and R1 = 2.96% for the model where all oxygen sites are split.

The new triazolate mineral bojarite (IMA2020-037), Cu3(N3C2H2)3(OH)Cl2⋅6H2O, is found in a guano deposit located at the Pabellón de Pica Mountain, Iquique Province, Tarapacá Region, Chile. Associated minerals are salammoniac, halite, nitratine and belloite. Bojarite occurs as blue fine-grained porous aggregates up to 1 mm × 3 mm × 5 mm combined typically in interrupted earthy crusts. The mineral is brittle. The Mohs hardness is 2. Dcalc = 2.057 g cm–3. The IR and Raman spectra show the presence of the 1,2,4-triazolate anion and H2O molecules. Bojarite is optically isotropic and n = 1.635(2) (λ = 589 nm). The chemical composition (electron-microprobe data for Na, Mg, Fe, Cu and Cl; H, C and N contents measured by gas chromatography on products of ignition at 1200°C; wt.%) is: Na 0.22, Mg 0.74, Fe 0.99, Cu 29.73, Cl 13.62, N 20.4, C 11.6, H 3.3, O (calculated by stoichiometry) 19.93, total 100.53.

The empirical formula is (Cu2.68Mg0.17Fe0.10Na0.05)Σ3(N3C2H2)2.755[(OH)][Cl2.19(H2O)3.77(OH)0.04]Σ6⋅2.3H2O. The idealised formula is Cu3(N3C2H2)3(OH)Cl2⋅6H2O. The crystal structure of bojarite was refined based on powder X-ray diffraction data, using the Rietveld method. The final agreement factors are: Rp = 0.0225, Rwp = 0.0310 and Robs = 0.0417. The new mineral is cubic, space group Fd$\bar{3}$c; a = 24.8047(5) Å, V = 15,261.6(5) Å3 and Z = 32. The strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I,%)(hkl)] are: 8.83 (31)(220), 7.19 (100)(222), 6.23 (35)(400), 5.077 (28)(422), 4.194 (28)(531), 3.584 (23)(444), 2.865 (28)(660, 751) and 2.723 (22)(753, 842).

Eudialyte-related compounds have been synthesised hydrothermally at T = 600°C and P = 2 kbar from a stoichiometric mixture of Na2CO3, CaO, Fe2O3, ZrOCl2 and SiO2 using the Na:Ca:Fe:Zr:Si ratios corresponding to the eudialyte end-member Na15Ca6Fe3Zr3Si(Si25O73)(OH)Cl2⋅H2O, in the presence of 1 M aqueous solutions of NaCl and NaF. The synthesis was carried out in platinum ampoules over 10 days. Natural raslakite (a Ca-deficient member of the eudialyte group) was used as a seed and added in amounts corresponding to 2 wt.% of the whole charge. The products were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopy, morphological features, and electron probe microanalyses. In experiments with NaCl, almost pure eudialyte-type compounds were obtained. Synthesis in the presence of a NaF solution resulted in the formation of a F-dominant eudialyte-type compound related to raslakite as the main product and aegirine, vlasovite and lalondeite as by-products. All synthesised eudialyte-type compounds are Zr-rich and Fe-deficient, similar to eudialyte-group minerals from hyperagpaitic rocks related to foyaites. The increased NaCl contents in the reaction system results in increased Ca content in the synthesised eudialyte-related compounds. The crystal-chemical formulae of the synthesised eudialyte-type compounds are derived based on general regularities established earlier for eudialyte-group minerals.

Copper-sulfides within carbonatites and phoscorites of the Phalaborwa Igneous Complex, South Africa, have been investigated since the middle of the 20th Century. However, aspects of ore formation have remained unclear. This study examines the mechanisms involved in Cu-sulfide mineralisation by micro-focus X-ray computed tomography as applied to sulfide-rich drill core samples. Several texturally distinct assemblages of magmatic sulfides can be identified, including: (1) <500 μm rounded bornite and chalcopyrite grains disseminated within the gangue; (2) elongated mm-scale assemblages of chalcopyrite and bornite; and (3) mm-to-cm thick chalcopyrite cumulates. Chalcopyrite veins were also observed, as well as late-stage valleriite, documenting late-stage fluid circulation within the pipe, and alteration of magmatic and hydrothermal sulfides along fractures within the gangue, respectively. The results of micro-focus X-ray computed tomography indicate that magmatic sulfides are sub-vertically aligned. Spatial variability of the sulfide assemblages suggests that textural changes within sulfide layers reflect fluctuating magma flow rate during emplacement of carbonatite–phoscorite magmas, through coalescence or breakup of sulfide liquid droplets during ascent. Modal sulfide abundances, especially for disseminated assemblages, differ from one carbonatite–phoscorite layer to another, suggesting a strong control of the mechanical sorting in the formation of Cu-sulfide textures within the Loolekop carbonatite. The alternation of carbonatite and phoscorite within the intrusion suggest that the Loolekop Pipe was emplaced through a series of successive magma pulses, which differentiated into carbonatite and phoscorite by melt immiscibility/progressive fractional crystallisation and pressure drop. Three-dimensional textural analysis represents an effective tool for the characterisation of magma flow and is useful for the understanding of magmatic processes controlling sulfide liquid-bearing phoscorite–carbonatite magmas.

The new eudialyte-group mineral amableite-(Ce), ideally Na15[(Ce1.5Na1.5)Mn3]Mn2Zr3□Si[Si24O69(OH)3](OH)2⋅H2O, was discovered in a peralkaline pegmatite at Saint-Amable Sill, Montérégie, Québec, Canada. The associated minerals are albite, microcline, aegirine, serandite, natrolite, yofortierite, and an unidentified titanosilicate forming minute grains. Amableite-(Ce) occurs as yellow equant or thick tabular crystals up to 2 mm across. The observed crystal forms are {0001}; the subordinate forms are {11$\bar{2}$0}, {10$\bar{1}$1}, and {10$\bar{1}$0}. Amableite-(Ce) is brittle, with a Mohs hardness of 5. D(meas) = 2.89(1), D(calc) = 2.899 g⋅cm–3. Amableite-(Ce) is optically anomalously biaxial (+) with α ≈ β = 1.603(2) and γ = 1.608(2). The chemical composition is (wt.%, electron microprobe, H2O measured by means of a modified Penfield method): Na2O 14.20, K2O 0.41, CaO 1.89, MnO 8.25, Fe2O3 2.40, La2O3 3.10, Ce2O3 4.19, Pr2O3 0.16, Nd2O3 0.59, SiO2 49.41, ZrO2 11.17, HfO2 0.24, TiO2 0.68, Nb2О5 1.54, Cl 0.26, H2O 1.70, –O≡Cl –0.06, total 100.13. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R1 = 0.0423. Amableite-(Ce) is trigonal, space group R3, with a = 14.1340(3) Å, c = 30.3780(11) Å and V = 5255.6(3) Å3. The crystal-chemical formula is (Na12.93K0.27Ce0.06)Σ13.26[(Mn2.49Ce0.30Ca0.21)Σ3.00(Ce1.14Na1.04Ca0.82)Σ3.00](Mn1.05Fe0.90□1.05)Σ3.00(Zr2.85Ti0.12Hf0.03)Σ3.00(□0.40Nb0.36Si0.24)Σ1.00(Si0.88□0.12)Σ1.00[Si24(O70.44(OH)1.56)Σ72.00][(OH)2.20(H2O)1.27]Σ3.47Cl0.22 (Z = 3). Infrared and Raman spectra are given. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 11.34 (51)(101), 7.06 (76)(110), 4.312 (63)(205), 3.783 (38)(033), 3.538 (43)(027, 220), 2.963 (84)($\bar{3}$45), 2.837 (100)(404). The mineral is named after the discovery locality.

Galena–tetrahedrite intergrowth textures have been observed in some quenched run products of melting experiments conducted at 500 and 600°C in the systems ZnS–PbS–FeS–Cu2S–Sb2S3 and ZnS–PbS–FeS–Cu2S–Sb2S3–As2S3, using the evacuated silica-tube method. At 600°C the intergrowth formed an interface between sulfide melt and galena, whereas at 500°C it existed as inclusions partially embedded or completely embedded within tetrahedrite. At 600°C tetrahedrite was absent in PbS-bearing experiments, instead galena and melt were a part of the equilibrium phase assemblage. From the disposition of the galena–tetrahedrite intergrowths at 500°C it is evident that droplets of galena–tetrahedrite melt coexisted with tetrahedrite or tetrahedrite + galena and gave rise to these intergrowths upon quenching. The intergrowths coexisting with galena probably represent compositions on the galena-rich liquidus in the galena–tetrahedrite binary and those coexisting with tetrahedrite represent points on the tetrahedrite-rich liquidus. A eutectic at galena:tetrahedrite = ~30:70, very close to 500°C is apparent. It is clearly indicated that galena–tetrahedrite intergrowths can be formed by sulfide partial melting, and could be used as a potential indicator of partial melting in metamorphosed sulfide ore deposits.

The incorporation of pertechnetate (TcO4–) into feldspathoids produced by alkaline alteration of aluminosilicate clays may offer a potential treatment route for 99Tc-containing groundwater and liquors. Kaolinite was aged in NaOH to determine the effect of base concentration, temperature, and solution composition on mineral transformation and pertechnetate uptake. In all reactions, increased temperature and NaOH concentration increased the rate of kaolinite transformation to feldspathoid phases. In reactions containing only NaOH, sodalite was the dominant alteration product; however, small amounts (6–15%) of cancrinite also formed. In experiments containing NaOH/Cl and NaOH/NO3 mixtures, sodalite and nitrate cancrinite were crystallized (at 70°C), with no reaction intermediates. The addition of SO42– crystallized sulfatic sodalite at 40 and 50°C, but at higher temperatures (60 and 70°C) sulfatic sodalite transforms to vishnevite (sulfatic cancrinite). In experiments where a pertechnetate tracer was added (at ∼1.5 μmol l–1), only 3–5% of the 99Tc was incorporated into the feldspathoid phases. This suggests that the larger pertechnetate anion was unable to compete as favourably for the internal vacancies with the smaller OH–, NO3–, SO42– or Cl– anions in solution, making this method likely to be unsuitable for groundwater treatment.

Four specimens of the roméite-group minerals oxyplumboroméite and fluorcalcioroméite from the Långban Mn-Fe deposit in Central Sweden were structurally and chemically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The data obtained and those on additional roméite samples from literature show that the main structural variations within the roméite group are related to variations in the content of Pb2+, which is incorporated into the roméite structure via the substitution Pb2+→A2+ where A2+ = Ca, Mn and Sr. Additionally, the cation occupancy at the six-fold coordinated B site, which is associated with the heterovalent substitution BFe3+ + Y☐→BSb5++YO2-, can strongly affect structural parameters.

Chemical formulae of the roméite minerals group are discussed. According to crystal-chemical information, the species associated with the name ‘kenoplumboroméite’, hydroxycalcioroméite and fluorcalcioroméite most closely approximate end-member compositions Pb2(SbFe3+)O6☐, Ca2(Sb5+Ti) O6(OH) and (CaNa)Sb2O6F, respectively. However, in accord with pyrochlore nomenclature rules, their names correspond to multiple end-members and are best described by the general formulae: (Pb,#)2(Sb,#)2O6☐, (Ca,#)2(Sb,#)2O6(OH) and (Ca,#)Sb2(O,#)6F, where ‘#’ indicates an unspecified charge-balancing chemical substituent, including vacancies.

The mineral strüverite occurs as a rare accessory constituent of the pegmatite which is found in large detrital masses in the neighbourhood of Craveggia (Val Vigezzo, northern Piedmont), namely on the Piano dei Lavonchi and in other localities on the eastern slope of the mountain across which runs the road from Vasca to the Alp Marco. In this pegmatite Professor G. Spezia in 1882 noted the occurrence of beryl, and two years later Professor G. Strüver that of columbite, a mineral which had not hitherto been found in the Alps. Still later, notices of other rare minerals from the pegmatiie were published by Professor A. Piccini and Professor A. Cossa.

Probably everyone who has considered the arrangement of the constituents of an aggregate composed of radially grouped fibres has realised that the individual fibres are conical or pyramidal in form, their apices meeting in the centre of the aggregate. In a coarse example of this mode of erystallisation, such as the calcite concretions in the magnesian limestone of Durham, this conical form of the constituent crystals is very easily seen; the cones cleave across, where composed of a cleavable mineral, showing that the particles composing them have the same orientation within the limits of the cone, and that each cone, in fact, is a crystal, bounded ultimately by contact with its neighbours.

It has long been possible to identify readily many minerals by means of density and refractive index determinations, and the chemical composition also can often be approximately deduced. Tilley has shown that it is practicable to determine any natural glass by this method and be succeeded in separating the natural glasses into groups characterized by certain limits of specific refractivity. As far as the author is aware, no such systematic method has been described for distinguishing the artificial glasses one from the other, and it is these glasses that we are concerned with in attempting to determine the approximate composition of an imitation gem-stone without the aid of chemical analysis.

Diaboleïte has been synthesized between 25 and 100° C at atmospheric pressure and approximate water vapour partial pressures of 14·7 lb/in2. Under similar conditions at 170° C cumengéite appears to be the stable phase produced from a diaboleïte composition. Synthetic diaboleïte is much simpler morphologically than the natural mineral but the hemimorphic symmetry is more clearly demonstrated morphologically in the artificial specimens. A comparison of X-ray powder data for natural and synthetic diaboleïte shows almost exact detailed correspondence in line position and intensity between 0 and 180° 2θ. The cell dimensions obtained from X-ray powder data are a 5·869 ± 0·002 Å and c 5·495 ± 0·003 Å.

In the rich mineral assemblage found in the pegmatites of Rhodesia and Uganda are members of the amblygonite-montebrasite series with α 1·592–1·615, γ, 1·612–1·638, the highest values corresponding to montebrasite, Li1·98Al2·00 (P1·95O7·90)(OH1·90F0·20); apatite with up to 8·8 per cent MnO; heterosite (new analysis) and other manganese-iron phosphates; and a variety of niobium-tantalum and uranium minerals.
