Mesothermal gold ores in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are dominated by a pyrite ± arsenopyrite ± pyrrhotite sulphide assemblage. Many of these ores are refractory to varying degrees and require treatment by roasting, bacterial oxidation or finer milling. The most common sulphide ore types can be sub-divided broadly into pyritic (pyrite±pyrrhotite) and arsenical types (pyrite+arsenopyrite± pyrrhotite). Arsenical ores vary from highly refractory to free-milling. Arsenopyrite in highly refractory ores is finer grained, As-deficient (27 –32.5 at.% As), contains high average concentrations of submicroscopic gold (60 –270 ppm), but does not contain inclusions of particulate gold. Arsenopyrite in free-milling ores is coarser grained, less As-deficient to slightly As-rich (30 –35 at.% As), contains low or negligible concentrations of submicroscopic gold, but contains inclusions and fracture fillings of particulate gold. In some refractory arsenical ores, pyrite also contains moderately high levels of submicroscopic gold (20 –40 ppm), the concentration of which is directly related to As content of the pyrite.

Pyritic ores are free-milling to mildly refractory, or rarely moderately refractory. Pyrite in pyritic ores contains negligible to low levels of submicroscopic gold (<5 ppm). Other reasons for refractory behaviour in pyritic ores include very fine-grained native gold inclusions in pyrite, or the presence of gold-bearing tellurides.

It is concluded that submicroscopic gold is incorporated into the crystal lattices of arsenopyite and arsenical pyrite at sub-greenschist to lower greenschist-facies temperatures, and is progressively expelled as inclusions and fracture fillings of native gold in sulphides, and ultimately into the gangue, as recrystallization proceeds through upper greenschist- into amphibolite-facies temperatures, during deformation and burial. Submicroscopic gold is expelled more rapidly from pyrite than arsenopyrite.

Pyrrhotite progressively replaces primary pyrite at higher temperatures, but rarely contains gold. Finally, a metallurgical classification scheme for refractory ores is presented which incorporates the above mineralogical conclusions.

Rhythmic layering in the Skaergaard intrusion shows variation in crystal size and in modal proportions of primocrysts with structural height. These changes are ascribed to variations in nucleation rates of primocrysts. The nucleation theory requires that crystallization occurs under supercooled conditions, and that the crystallization of one primocryst phase may change the composition of the magma in such a manner that the nucleation rates of other primocrysts are influenced. Both these constraints appear to have been fulfilled for the Skaergaard intrusion.

Porphyritic natrocarbonatite lavas erupted from the Oldoinyo Lengai volcano (Tanzania) on 17 October 1995 and 15–19 December 1995 differ from previously studied lavas in that they preserve textures indicative of groundmass carbonate-carbonate immiscibility. The immiscible fractions are considered to involve: a Na-K-Ca-CO2-Cl-rich, F-bearing fluid crystallizing gregoryite, sodian sylvite, potassium neighborite as well as a complex Ba-rich carbonate; and a Na-rich, Cl-poor carbonate liquid approximating to a nyerereite-gregoryite cotectic composition. Compositional data are given for potassium neighborite, this mineral being the first recognized occurrence of a fluorine-based perovskite group mineral in a magmatic environment. New compositional data are also given for a previously recognized potassium iron sulphide which indicate that this phase is probably a solid solution between the ternary sulphides, KFe3S4, K2Fe3S4, and KFe2S3. Textural and paragenetic data are interpreted to suggest that these recent lavas are more evolved than previously investigated Oldoinyo Lengai lavas and that natrocarbonatite is a highly evolved rather than a primitive magma.

Platinum group mineral (PGM) assemblages in the Platreef at Sandsloot, northern Bushveld Complex, in a variety of lithologies reveal a complex multi-stage mineralization history. During crystallization of the Platreef pyroxenites, platinum group elements (PGE) and base-metal sulphides (BMS) were distributed thoughout the interstitial liquid forming a telluride-dominant assemblage devoid of PGE sulphides. Redistribution of PGE into the metamorphic footwall by hydrothermal fluids has formed arsenide-, alloy- and antimonide-dominant assemblages, indicating a significant volatile influence during crystallization. Serpentinization of the footwall has produced an antimonide-dominant PGM assemblage. Parts of the igneous reef were subjected to alteration by a late-stage, Fe-rich fluid, producing ultramafic zones where the telluride-dominant assemblage has been recrystallized to an alloy-dominant one, particularly rich in Pt-Fe and Pd-Pb alloys. A thin, small-volume zone of PGE-BMS mineralization along the base of the hangingwall contains a primary PGM assemblage that is locally altered to one dominated by Pt/Pd germanides. This is thought to have formed when the new pulse of Main Zone magma entered the chamber, and scavenged PGE from the underlying Platreef pyroxenites. That each major rock type at Sandsloot contains a distinctive PGM assemblage reflects the importance of syn- and post-emplacement fluid and magmatic processes on the development of Platreef mineralization.

The complexities of chemical composition and crystal structure are fundamental characteristics of minerals that have high relevance to the understanding of their stability, occurrence and evolution. This review summarises recent developments in the field of mineral complexity and outlines possible directions for its future elaboration. The database of structural and chemical complexity parameters of minerals is updated by H-correction of structures with unknown H positions and the inclusion of new data. The revised average complexity values (arithmetic means) for all minerals are 3.54(2) bits/atom and 345(10) bits/cell (based upon 4443 structure reports). The distributions of atomic information amounts, chemIG and strIG, versus the number of mineral species fit the normal modes, whereas the distributions of total complexities, chemIG,total and strIG,total, along with numbers of atoms per formula and per unit cell are log normal. The three most complex mineral species known today are ewingite, morrisonite and ilmajokite, all either discovered or structurally characterised within the last five years. The most important complexity-generating mechanisms in minerals are: (1) the presence of isolated large clusters; (2) the presence of large clusters linked together to form three-dimensional frameworks; (3) formation of complex three-dimensional modular frameworks; (4) formation of complex modular layers; (5) high hydration state in salts with complex heteropolyhedral units; and (6) formation of ordered superstructures of relatively simple structure types. The relations between symmetry and complexity are considered. The analysis of temporal dynamics of mineralogical discoveries since 1875 with the step of 25 years show the increasing chemical and structural complexities of human knowledge of the mineral kingdom in the history of mineralogy. In the Earth's history, both diversity and complexity of minerals experience dramatic increases associated with the formation of Earth's continental crust, initiation of plate tectonics and the Great Oxidation event.

The absorption spectra of talc, saponite, and hectorite between 4000 and 400 cm. −1 are closely related, although the bands of the smectites are more diffuse as a result of isomorphous substitutions in the tale structure. Using oriented specimens, vibrations in which the change of dipole moment is perpendicular to the sheets of the minerals are identified, and the results compared with theoretical predictions. Three bands arising from the stretching vibrations of interlayer water molecules in the smectites are distinguished, one of which corresponds to a very weak hydrogen bond. Spectral changes arising from vigorous grinding are discussed.

Moganite, monoclinic SiO2, is a component of microcrystalline, quartz-bearing, sinters of New Zealand derived from crystallization of non-crystalline and paracrystalline opaline silicas. It occurs at levels of <13 vol.% of the SiO2 phases present in sinters between 20,000 and 200,000 y old but is generally either absent or below the level of detection in Tertiary sinters. Unambiguous identification of moganite is most readily accomplished by laser Raman spectroscopy; the technique allows individual microtextural elements of a sinter's fabric to be analysed. Conventional scanning X-ray powder diffraction procedures are limited in their ability to discern the characteristic moganite diffraction lines from the very similar quartz pattern, especially in those samples where moganite is at low concentration and/or unanticipated. However, powder diffraction, using a position-sensitive detector system, allows not only the identification of the moganite pattern in the presence of a large proportion of quartz, but also semiquantitative estimates of the different silica phases present in bulk sinter samples of ~450 mg. Moganite is part of the sinter maturation sequence. It occurs as a metastable phase that will ultimately transform to quartz, given sufficient time or a change in ambient conditions.

The results of a study on the suitability of the inductively coupled plasma source spectrometer for the analysis of rocks and minerals are presented. The preparation of a stable solution of the elements to be measured is a prerequisite, and methods of sample preparation are described. It is shown that it is possible to measure all the major elements (excluding H2O and Fe2+) with acceptable precision and accuracy, and a wide range of trace elements down to the ppm level in the rock or mineral. Excluding sample preparation time, analysis and print-out of results as percent or ppm requires 1–2 minutes for complete analysis. Data on possible interferences (spectral line overlap etc.) are presented and, using some analyses of rocks and minerals comparisons are made with other analytical methods.

Surfaces of a natural sample of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) were oxidized by a range of inorganic oxidants, and the resultant surface alteration products studied using various spectroscopic techniques. The oxidants used were air during heating to relatively low temperatures (150°C), steam, ammonium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and sulphuric acid. Electrochemical oxidation in water was also undertaken. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and spectral reflectance measurements, were used to characterize the surface compositions. New data are proposed for the binding energies of core electrons in arsenopyrite based on the fitted XPS spectra: 706.9 eV for the Fe 2p3/2 level, 161.2 eV for the S 2p level, and 40.7eV for the As 3d level. Spectroscopic analyses of the surfaces following oxidation indicated a range of iron oxides and hydroxides (Fe1−xO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeOOH and Fe(OH)3), arsenic oxides (As2O3 and As2O5), sulphur and iron sulphates (FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3). The relative proportions of the different phases present in the surface layer are related to the strength of the oxidant employed and, where relevant, the Eh/pH conditions prevalent during oxidation. The conclusions regarding the nature of the oxidation of arsenopyrite are discussed in relation to arsenopyrite extraction by flotation and leaching, and the breakdown of arsenopyrite in natural systems.

Zeolites (eight species) and the associated secondary minerals (minerals akin to zeolites, chlorites and related minerals, silica, and calcite) in the Deccan Traps of Western India have been examined in some detail on the basis of chemical, optical, and X-ray studies. The three zeolite zones (laumontite, scolecite, and heulandite, in ascending order) suggested by Walker have been recognized. Efforts have been made to understand their genesis. On available field and laboratory data it is suggested that the different zones of zeolitization are the result of increasing depth and the action of the circulating fluids on the rocks. The activity of such solutions was probably enhanced in the wake of the structural disturbances and intrusive activity that affected the rocks of this area.

A model has been constructed that establishes the geometry of inclusion fabrics to be expected in near-spherical crystals that grow continuously while either the crystals rotate in a static matrix or a matrix fabric rotates about them. Garnets in certain metamorphic rocks contain inclusion fabrics whose geometry is very similar to that of the model. Such syntectonic, snowball, or rotational garnets, as they have previously been termed, can be studied in three dimensions. A method is outlined whereby the rotation axes for individual crystals viewed in thick sections can be located in certain planes of cut. The significance of the geometry of included rotational fabrics is discussed in relation to previous work and to possible mechanisms of rotation.

SHRIMP U-Pb zircon and titanite dating have been used to constrain the timing of mid- to lower- crustal metamorphism (∼650—700°C and 8—11 kbar) and syn-kinematic melting in the granitoid gneiss- dominated terrane south of the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa. This study is concentrated on a clastic metasedimentary unit exposed in one of several greenstone remnants and a late-kinematic trondhjemite intrusive into spatially associated mixed gneisses. Locally, the clastic metasediments show extensive replacement of garnet and plagioclase by epidote and titanite. The titanites yield an upper intercept date of 3229±9 Ma, and provide a minimum age for the peak of metamorphism. Zircons separated from the same unit record a range of concordant and near-concordant 207Pb/206Pb dates between ∼3560 and 3230 Ma, the youngest group yielding a weighted mean date of 3227±7 Ma. This range of dates is interpreted to be due to a combination of metamorphic recrystallization and high- temperature Pb-loss in originally detrital zircons during regional metamorphism. A minimum age for the timing of deformation is given by the emplacement age of 3229±5 Ma for the late-kinematic trondhjemite. Thus, geochronological data support the notion of a major metamorphic episode that coincided with the proposed short-lived terrane accretion event in the centre of the Barberton greenstone belt.

Feldspars from the Karkonosze pluton (SW Poland) display many features compatible with magma mixing. The mixing hypothesis has been tested using a geochemical mass balance law resulting in two possible paths of magma hybridization. Based on the results of the geochemical calculation, feldspar samples have been chosen along both mixing lines for cathodoluminescence (CL) investigation which was used as the main tool for the reconstruction of their crystallization path. Changes in the conditions of nucleation and crystallization of the feldspars as well as their movement within the magma chamber have been recognized due to different luminescence characteristics. These changes in the conditions of crystallization obtained by CL allow a precise determination of the genetic affinity of the samples to more mafic or more felsic environments.

The results of the present study proved CL to be a valuable tool for the study of crystal-growth morphologies in a dynamic, turbulent environment and also as a geochemical tool for the reconstruction of various petrogenetic mechanisms (e.g. magma hybridization). Accordingly, the combination of CL with geochemical modelling provides corresponding information about magma evolution in an open system.

In situ laser ablation high resolution ICP-MS analyses of scheelite from hydrothermal veins at the Archaean Mt. Charlotte gold deposit (Western Australia) show inhomogeneous REE distribution at small scale (<100 μm). In a limited number of samples, variations of the cathodoluminescence (CL) colours from blue to yellow are linked to the REE content of scheelite, and reveal oscillatory zoning of the REE with zone widths between 1 μm and 100 μm. However, CL failed to reveal the zoning in most inhomogeneous scheelite samples. A nuclear microprobe has been used to characterize the distribution of REE in these samples. No reasonable map for the distribution of REE could be obtained by particle induced X-ray emission, because of interferences with W-L lines. However, monochromatic ionoluminescence (IL) maps collected at the wavelength of the main REE3+ luminescence peaks revealed oscillatory zoning. Therefore, IL is a powerful tool for mapping the distribution of REE in natural scheelite. Monochromatic IL maps allow us to determine the nature of the inhomogeneous distribution of REE in scheelite, fundamental information for using the REE in this mineral as a marker for the chemistry of ore-forming fluids, and for interpreting Sm-Nd isotopic data.

Processes of mineral alteration involving the mobilization and deposition of more than 30 chemical elements during bauxite formation and epigenesis have been studied on specimens from the Devonian Schugorsk bauxite deposit, Timan, Russia. Chemical analyses of the minerals were obtained by electron microprobe and element distribution in the minerals was studied by element mapping. Interpretation of these data also utilized high-resolution BSE and SE images.

The main rock-forming minerals of the Vendian parent rock are calcite, dolomite, feldspar, aegirine, riebeckite, mica, chlorite and quartz; accessory minerals are pyrite, galena, apatite, ilmenite, monazite, xenotime, zircon, columbite, pyrochlore, chromite, bastnaesite and some others. Typically, the grainsize of the accessory minerals in both parent rock and bauxite is from 1 to 40 µm. However, even within these rather small grains, the processes of crystal growth and alteration during weathering can be determined from the zonal distribution of the elements. The most widespread processes observed are: (1) Decomposition of Ti-bearing minerals such as ilmenite, aegirine and riebeckite with the formation of ‘leucoxene’, which is the main concentrator of Nb, Cr, V and W. Crystal growth can be traced from the zonal distribution of Nb (up to 16 wt.%). Vein-like ‘leucoxene’ is also observed in association with organics. (2) Weathering of columbite and pyrochlore: the source of Nb in ‘leucoxene’ is now strongly weathered columbite, while the alteration of pyrochlore is expressed in the growth of plumbopyrochlore rims around Ca-rich cores. (3) Dissolution of sulphide minerals and apatite and the formation of crandallite group minerals: ‘crandallite’ crystals of up to 40 µm size show a very clear zonation. From the core to the rim of a crystal, the following sequence of elements is observed: Ca → Ba → Ce → Pb → Sr → Nd. Sulphur also shows a zoned but more complicated distribution, while the distribution of Fe is rather variable. A possible source of REE is bastnaesite from the parent rock. More than twelve crandallite type cells can be identified in a single ‘crandallite’ grain. (4) Alteration of stoichiometric zircon and xenotime with the formation of metamict solid solution of zircon and xenotime: altered zircon rims also bear large amounts of Sc (up to 3.5 wt.%), Fe, Ca and Al in the form of as yet unidentified inclusions of 1–2 µm. Monazite seems to be the least altered mineral of the profile.

In the parent rock, an unknown mineral of the composition (wt.%): ThO2 – 54.8; FeO – 14.6; Y2O5 – 2.3; CaO – 2.0; REE – 1.8; SiO2 12.2; P2O5 – 2.8; total – 94.2 (average from ten analyses) was determined. In bauxite, another mineral was found, which has the composition (wt.%): ThO2 – 24.9; FeO – 20.5; Y2O5 – 6.7; CaO 2.0; – ZrO – 17.6; SiO2 – 8.8; P2O5 – 5.4; total – 89.3 (F was not analysed; average from nine analyses). Presumably, the second mineral is the result of weathering of the first one. Although the Th content is very high, the mineral is almost free of Pb. However, intergrowths of galena and pyrite are observed around the partially decomposed crystals of the mineral. Another generation of galena is enriched in chalcophile elements such as Cu, Cd, Bi etc., and is related to epigenetic alteration of the profile, as are secondary apatite and muscovite.

The importance of silica in terrestrial land plants has been recognized since the middle of the 19th century with applications in agronomy and palaeovegetation reconstruction. In this presentation, we will review the latest advances in our understanding of phytolith formation and present a few examples of applications in the field of global environmental changes.

In this paper, the kinetics of Mo and V (100 μM) uptake on ferrihydrite (FHY) were evaluated in batch, mono-sorbate systems at pH between 4 and 9, and in bi-sorbate systems in the presence of P (100 μM) at pH 7. In the Mo and V single-sorbate experiments, 100% adsorption was observed at pH values below 6 and 8, respectively. Above the point of zero charge (PZC = 7.97) of FHY, the adsorption efficiency for Mo dropped dramatically (20% at pH 8) while V showed high uptake efficiencies even at pH 9 (60% efficiency). The results from the bi-sorbate experiments (Mo-P and V-P) showed that at pH 7, P out-competed (97%) Mo for binding sites on FHY, while in the V-P binary system only ∼44% of the binding sites are occupied by P with the remaining sites being occupied by V.

The system of intrusive sheets in the Lower Carboniferous formations of the north of England, familiar to geologists throughout the world as the Great Whin Sill, has a voluminous early literature which it is unnecessary to summarize here. It will be sufficient to refer to the classical papers by Topley and Lebour on the field relationships (1) and by Teall on the detailed petrography (4), each of which contains an ample bibliography of the earlier literature. The most recent general account is by Prof. E. J. Garwood (9), who contributed a careful discussion of the evidence bearing on the period of intrusion.

Teall's great paper closely followed on one devoted to some of the dikes of the north of England (3), and in it he drew attention to the remarkable petrographical Similarity between the rocks of the Heft and High Green dikes and that of the Whin Sill (4, p. 656).

We review recent advances on the physical principles of crystallization in multicomponent systems, and use them to provide a framework for interpreting petrological and geochemical observations from igneous intrusions. The thermal structure of crystallizing boundary layers imposes strong constraints on the chemical and mineralogical compositions of the solid that can form from a given melt. The thermal problem is largely independent of the chemical composition of the melt, and sets the course of crystallization. A key problem to understand is the temperature of the solidification front (which we take to mean that point at which the last drop of liquid solidifies) particularly in the geologically relevant case in which the temperature at the cold boundary is below the eutectic temperature. Focussing on the solidification front rather than on the liquidus is a valuable perspective. Adcumulus growth requires specific conditions and much can be learned from trying to understand how these can develop from given starting conditions. We discuss the physical reasons and field evidence for the existence of mushy layers, where solid fraction and temperature vary by large amounts. In such regions of the magma chamber, thermodynamic equilibrium is nearly achieved locally and, for a given temperature, this specifies the composition of the interstitial melt. Thus, in a magma chamber, the whole liquid line of descent is present simultaneously. Compositional convection is likely to set in, and this exchange between the interior of the mushy layer and the main reservoir leads to a chemically stratified solid, and to adcumulus growth. The contribution of crystal settling to the floor cumulates is evaluated as a function of the magnitude of convective heat flux through the roof. It is shown that crystal settling is unlikely to overwhelm in-situ nucleation and growth at the floor.

Geochemical anomalies can be used in mineral resource exploration. We demonstrate a technique for mapping anomalies. The Gangdese mineral district in Tibet, west China was chosen as a study area for identifying geochemical anomalies and predicting Cu mineral resources using sediment geochemical data. The results show that the anomalies are associated both with known deposits in the middle of the study area, but also with E—W and N——E oriented faults in the north of area. These areas should be explored for undiscovered Cu mineral deposits.
