Gale transforms are constructed for certain infinite dimensional α-polytopes. In a manner analogous to the finite dimensional case the Gale transform can be used to determine all closed faces and Radon partitions of the α-polytope. A by-product is a characterization of closed faces using nets of functionals.

Let R⊂S be two orders in a number field, and let ER and ES be the respective groups of units in each ring. Then ES/ER and S/R are both finite. We consider the problem of bounding the order of ES/ER in terms of the index of R in S. In this paper we solve this problem in the special case that S/R is cyclic as a module over Z.

We introduce a class of “differential operators” on graphs and we prove an energy estimate and a Liouville type theorem depending on some structural properties of the operators considered.

In the present paper a general solution of the equations of elasticity in complete aeolotropy is found under the assumption that the stresses and therefore the strains are linear in the third cartesian coordinate. This solution is applied to the elastic equilibrium of a completely aeolotropic cylinder, under a distribution of tractions on the lateral surface and resultant forces and couples on the end sections of the cylinder. The problem of extension of a completely aeolotropic cylinder by longitudinal lateral loading and end forces is solved with an application to the elliptic cylinder. The writer hopes to present in later communications applications of this general solution to the following problems: (i) Bending of a completely aeolotropic cylinder by longitudinal lateral loading and end bending couples, (ii) Torsion of a completely aeolotropic cylinder by transverse lateral loading and end twisting couples, (iii) Flexure with shear of a completely aeolotropic cylinder with free lateral surface. Particular cases of (ii) and (iii) were considered by Luxenberg [1] and Lechnitzky [2, 3].

In what follows, R will denote a commutative domain with 1, and Q(≠R) its field of quotients, which is viewed here as an R-module. By RP we denote the localization of R at the maximal ideal P, and more generally, by MP = Rp⊗RM the localization of the R-module M at P, which we define to be the P-component of M. The symbol R* will mean the multiplicative monoid of nonzero elements of R. For a submonoid S of R*, Rs will denote the localization of R at S.

This note contains characterizations of those sigma-fields for which sigma-finiteness is a necessary condition in the Radon-Nikodym Theorem.

Our purpose is to consider those σ-fields for which σ-finiteness is a necessary condition in the Radon–Nikodym Theorem. We first prove a measure theoretic equivalence in the general case, and then use this to obtain an algebraic characterization in the case when the σ-field is the Borel field of a locally compact separable metric space. For undefined terminology we refer the reader to [1] for measure theoretic and [2] for algebraic properties.

By a measure, we mean a countably additive function from σ-field of sets or a Boolean σ-algebra into the non-negative extended real numbers. We will say that a measure μ on a σ-field of sets Σ is RN provided each μ-continuous finite measure on Σ has a Radon–Nikodym derivative in L1(μ).

Given a finite-dimensional Banach space $X$ and an Auerbach basis $\{(x_{k},x_{k}^{\ast }):1\leqslant k\leqslant n\}$ of $X$, it is proved that there exist $n+1$ linear combinations $z_{1},\ldots ,z_{n+1}$ of $x_{1},\ldots ,x_{n}$ with coordinates $0,\pm 1$, such that $\Vert z_{k}\Vert =1$, for $k=1$, $2,\ldots ,n+1$ and $\Vert z_{k}-z_{l}\Vert >1$, for $1\leqslant k<l\leqslant n+1$.

Let be a sequence of mutually disjoint open balls, with centres xj and corresponding radii aj, each contained in the closed unit ball in d-dimensional euclidean space, ℝd. Further we suppose, for simplicity, that the balls Bj are indexed so that aj≥aj+1. The set

Thus it follows that henceforth denoted by c(d), whilst the packing restraint ensures that Larman [11] has noted that, under these circumstances, one also has .

It is shown that every compact convex set K which is centrally symmetric and has a non-empty interior admits a packing of Euclidean 3-space with density at least 0.46421 … The best such bound previously known is 0.30051 … due to the theorem of Minkowski-Hlawka. It is probable that there is such a lower bound which is significantly greater than the one shown in this note, since there is a packing of congruent spheres which has density

If f(z) is a function of the complex variable z, regular in a neighbourhood of z = 0, with f (0) = 0 and f' (0) ≠ 0, then the equation w = f(z) admits a unique solution, regular in some neighbourhood of w = 0, given by

For a half-integral weight modular form $f=\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }a_{f}(n)n^{(k-1)/2}q^{n}$ of weight $k=\ell +1/2$ on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{0}(4)$ such that $a_{f}(n)$ ( $n\in \mathbb{N}$ ) are real, we prove for a fixed suitable natural number $r$ that $a_{f}(n)$ changes sign infinitely often as $n$ varies over numbers having at most $r$ prime factors, assuming the analog of the Ramanujan conjecture for Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight forms.

This paper presents a recent result for the problem introduced eleven years ago by Fraenkel and McLeod [A diffusing vortex circle in a viscous fluid. In IUTAM Symposium on Asymptotics, Singularities and Homogenisation in Problems of Mechanics, Kluwer (2003), 489–500], but described only briefly there. We shall prove the following, as far as space allows. The vorticity ${\it\omega}$ of a diffusing vortex circle in a viscous fluid has, for small values of a non-dimensional time, a second approximation ${\it\omega}_{A}+{\it\omega}_{1}$ that, although formulated for a fixed, finite Reynolds number ${\it\lambda}$ and exact for ${\it\lambda}=0$ (then ${\it\omega}={\it\omega}_{A}$), tends to a smooth limiting function as ${\it\lambda}\uparrow \infty$. In §§1 and 2 the necessary background and apparatus are described; §3 outlines the new result and its proof.

In 1933, K. Borsuk [1] established the well-known result that if n closed sets cover Sn−1 then at least one set contains antipodal points, where Sn−1 is the surface of the ball Tn of centre O and unit diameter in Rn. This result prompted H. Hadwiger [2] to make a still unresolved conjecture which, in the spirit of B. Griinbaum's survey [3], we state as follows: Let r be the largest integer such that whenever r closed sets cover Sn−1 at least one set realizes all distances between 0 and 1. Then r = n.

A long time ago Ju. E. Vapne ([2], [3]) and, independently, the author ([4], [5]) classified those standard and complete wreath products that have faithful representations of finite degree over (commutative) fields. See [6] pages 37 40 & 150–154 for an account of this. Recently, in connection with finitary linear groups, I needed a more general wreath product. Somewhat to my surprise neither the classification nor the proof for these generalized wreath products was a straightforward translation from the standard case. The situation is intrinsically more complex and it seems worthwhile recording it separately.

It was shown by Gruslys, Leader and Tan that any finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ tiles $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ for some $d$. The first non-trivial case is the punctured interval, which consists of the interval $\{-k,\ldots ,k\}\subset \mathbb{Z}$ with its middle point removed: they showed that this tiles $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ for $d=2k^{2}$, and they asked if the dimension needed tends to infinity with $k$. In this note we answer this question: we show that, perhaps surprisingly, every punctured interval tiles $\mathbb{Z}^{4}$.

We study two-weight norm inequalities for a vector-valued operator from a weighted $L^{p}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E})$-space to mixed norm $L_{l^{s}}^{q}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ spaces, $1<p<\infty$, $0<q<p$. We apply these results to the boundedness of Wolff’s potentials.

Recently there has been much interest in theories describing the behaviour of a mixture of two or more continua, which are allowed to diffuse through each other and which interact mechanically and thermally. In the present note we consider such a mixture consisting of two isotropic incompressible non-linear elastic solids; physically this may describe a composite of two rubber-like materials. Such a mixture possesses internal friction between the constituents when deformed (called diffusive resistance or diffusive force), which acts as a damping mechanism. This damping mechanism has a static part and a dynamic part, and we here show that the exact static solutions which exist for an isotropic incompressible non-linear elastic solid are such that the damping mechanism is expressible as a gradient, and hence are also controllable for such a mixture. We also discuss the corresponding dynamic solutions.

From a practical viewpoint, some experiments carried out on vulcanized synthetic rubber-like materials may involve a mixture rather than a pure solid.

A method of finding critical points in a half space is developed. It is then applied to the study of semilinear boundary value problems, and used to determine conditions which lead to multiple non-trivial solutions.
