In this paper it is shown that a simplicial action of Zp (p a prime) on an n-dimensional simplicial complex which is a Poincaré duality space of formal dimension n for Zp coefficients cannot have just one isolated fixed point.

In its simplest form, the theorem of Ascoli with which we are concerned is an extension of the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem: it states that, if X and Y are bounded closed sets, of real or complex numbers, andis a sequence of equicontinuous functions mapping X into Y, thenhas a uniformly convergent subsequence. As is well known, this result has played a fundamental part in the development of several theories; it has also been widely generalized, by processes of abstraction and localization, and a very useful version of the theorem runs as follows (cf. [4], 233–234):

(A) Suppose that X is a locally compact regular space, and that Y is a Hausdorff space whose topology is determined by a uniform structure. Let YX be the space of all functions that map X into Y, with the topology of locally uniform convergence with respect to. Then a closed setin YX is compact if, at each point x of X, (i) the set(x) is relatively compact, in Y, and, (ii) is equicontinuous with respect to.

In [1] I made the following conjecture. If we tile a convex polygon of at most six sides with N convex tiles of areas a1, …,aN, then the total perimeter of the tiles is never less than the total perimeter of N regular hexagons of areas a1, …, aN. In order to show that the condition of the convexity of the tiles cannot be omitted I constructed a tiling with an equal number of “pentagons” and “heptagons” of perimeters and areas and , and ā5 and ā7, respectively. In a letter to me R. Schneider kindly pointed out that, in contrast to the value given in [1], the value of the quotient was equal to 3.7263… This being greater than √8√3 = 3–7224… the tiling given in [1] does not yield the desired counter-example. In what follows we shall construct a tiling for which the respective quotient will turn out to be less than √8√3.

The problem of finding an axiomatic characterisation of dimension was first tackled by Menger, who gave a set of five independent axioms characterising the dimension (in the sense of dim, ind, or Ind since they are all equal on separable metric spaces) of subsets of the plane [7, p. 156]. The question of whether Menger's axioms characterise the dimension of more general spaces is still unsettled. Recently, Nishiura “11” obtained a set of seven independent axioms characterising the dimension of separable metric spaces. By modifying one of Nishiura's axioms, Aarts [1] then obtained an axiomatic characterisation of the strong inductive dimension (Ind) of metric spaces. Also, Ščepin [12] and Lokucievskiĭ [9] have obtained different axioms for dim on the class of compact metric and compact spaces, respectively. We present here four sets of independent axioms that characterise the dimension function u-dim, which is defined on the class of all uniform spaces.

The following theorem appears in Weyl's famous memoir [3] of 1916.

In [7[ a functor Ext is defined in terms of C*-extensions. It is a covariant functor from the homotopy category of compact, metrizable spaces to abelian groups. Further details are given in [7, 8, 9, 11]. From [7, 14] Ext extends to a Steenrod homology theory, Ext*, which may be identified with the one associated with unitary K-theory. Since Lie groups are fundamental to K-theory (see [2, p. 24]) one might expect Ext(G) to be of interest when G is a Lie group.

For the solubility of an inhomogeneous polynomial Diophantine equation, there is one well-known necessary, but not sufficient condition; namely the necessary congruence condition (NCC) explained in §2, below. Till recently, no progress had been made with the general cubic equation, because no one knew what else to assume. Examples given here, see (4.3), (5.4), indicate that some rather subtle hypothesis is needed. The first such hypothesis, see Davenport and Lewis [1], was very far from being necessary for the solubility of the equation. It would seem that any supplementary hypothesis which (loosely) is somewhere near necessary and also (together with the NCC) somewhere near sufficient deserves separate detailed investigation before one proceeds to use it.

A unified method is used to improve the order of the lower bound sieve.

These functions were extensively studied by several mathematicians. One of the problems investigated concerns their sign changes. We say that a function fx) has a sign change at x = x0 if f(x0 −) f(x0 +) < 0, and f(x) has a sign change on the integer n if (n)f(n+1) < 0. The numbers of sign changes and sign changes on integers of f(x) in the interval [1, T] are denoted by Xf(T) and Nf(T), respectively.

Let X be an infinite set and T(X) be the full transformation semigroup on X. In [4] and [6] Howie gives a description of the subsemigroup of T(X) generated by its idempotents. In order to do this he defines, for α in T(X),

In Mahler's classification of complex numbers [10] (see [4]), a transcendental number ξ is called a U-number if there exists a fixed integer N ≥ 1 so that for all ω > 0, there exists a polynomial so that

where the height h(f) = max {|α0|, |α1|, …, |αN|}. The number ξ is called a Um-number if the above holds for N = m but for no smaller value of N (examples and further details may be found in [9,1 and 2]). Thus the set of U1-numbers is precisely the set of Liouville numbers. In this paper we investigate the statistical behavior of the partial quotients of real U-numbers, in particular, U2-numbers. In addition, we demonstrate the existence of a U2-number with the property that if it is translated by any nonnegative integer and then squared, the result is a Liouville number. Related results involving badly approximate U2-numbers are also discussed.

Given a Hausdorff topological vector space with dimensiongreater than one, the barycentre of simple masses can be seen as the unique associative, internal and continuous mapping defined on these masses. Moreover, if the associated dual space separates points, by extending the continuity property, one can characterize also the barycentre of masses with compact convex support.

§1. Introduction. The spectral function ρα(μ) (−∞<μ<∞) associated with the Sturm–Liouville equation

and a boundary condition

is a non-decreasing function of μ which is defined in terms of the Titchmarsh–Weyl function mα(λ) for (1.1) and (1.2).

A subsemigroup S of a semigroup Q is a left order in Q, and Q is a semigroup of left quotients of S, if every element of Q can be written as a−1b for some a, b∈S with a belonging to a group -class of Q. Necessary and sufficient conditions on a semigroup S are obtained in order that S be a left order in a completely 0-simple semigroup Q. The class of all completely 0-simple semigroups of left quotients of S is related to the set of certain left congruences on S. Axioms are provided for semigroups which occur in the discussion of left orders in completely 0-simple semigroups.

A subsemigroup S of a semigroup Q is an order in Q if, for every q ∈ Q, there exist a, b, c, d ∈ S such that q = a−1b = cd−1 where a and d are contained in (maximal) subgroups of Q and a−1 and d−1 are their inverses in these subgroups. A semigroup which is a union of its subgroups is completely regular.

Gravity and surface-tension effects are examined for inviscid–inviscid interactions between two fluids close to a wall. The ratios of density and viscosity of the two fluids are taken to be small. A nonlinear integro–differential equation is found to govern the near-wall flow velocity, interface shape and pressure; analysis, computation and comparisons are then applied. Travelling-state solutions are of particular interest.

A natural number $n$ is called abundant if the sum of the proper divisors of $n$ exceeds $n$. For example, $12$ is abundant, since $1+ 2+ 3+ 4+ 6= 16$. In 1929, Bessel-Hagen asked whether or not the set of abundant numbers possesses an asymptotic density. In other words, if $A(x)$ denotes the count of abundant numbers belonging to the interval $[1, x] $, does $A(x)/ x$ tend to a limit? Four years later, Davenport answered Bessel-Hagen’s question in the affirmative. Calling this density $\Delta $, it is now known that $0. 24761\lt \Delta \lt 0. 24766$, so that just under one in four numbers are abundant. We show that $A(x)- \Delta x\lt x/ \mathrm{exp} (\mathop{(\log x)}\nolimits ^{1/ 3} )$ for all large $x$. We also study the behavior of the corresponding error term for the count of so-called $\alpha $-abundant numbers.

In 2006 Brown asked the following question in the spirit of Ramsey theory: given a non-periodic infinite word $x=x_{1}x_{2}x_{3}\ldots$ with values in a set $\mathbb{A}$, does there exist a finite colouring $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}:\mathbb{A}^{+}\rightarrow C$ relative to which $x$ does not admit a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$-monochromatic factorization, i.e. a factorization of the form $x=u_{1}u_{2}u_{3}\ldots$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(u_{i})=\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(u_{\!j})$ for all $i,j\geqslant 1$? Various partial results in support of an affirmative answer to this question have appeared in the literature in recent years. In particular it is known that the question admits an affirmative answer for all non-uniformly recurrent words and for various classes of uniformly recurrent words including Sturmian words and fixed points of strongly recognizable primitive substitutions. In this paper we give a complete and optimal affirmative answer to this question by showing that if $x=x_{1}x_{2}x_{3}\ldots$ is an infinite non-periodic word with values in a set $\mathbb{A}$, then there exists a $2$-colouring $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}:\mathbb{A}^{+}\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ such that for any factorization $x=u_{1}u_{2}u_{3}\ldots$ we have $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(u_{i})\neq \unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(u_{\!j})$ for some $i\neq j$.

For a half-integral weight modular form $f=\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }a_{f}(n)n^{(k-1)/2}q^{n}$ of weight $k=\ell +1/2$ on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{0}(4)$ such that $a_{f}(n)$ ( $n\in \mathbb{N}$ ) are real, we prove for a fixed suitable natural number $r$ that $a_{f}(n)$ changes sign infinitely often as $n$ varies over numbers having at most $r$ prime factors, assuming the analog of the Ramanujan conjecture for Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight forms.
