Following an example discovered by John Berge [2], we show that there is a 4-component link L ⊂ (S1 × S2)#(S1 × S2) so that, generically, the result of Dehn surgery on L is a 3-manifold with two inequivalent genus 2 Heegaard splittings, and each of these Heegaard splittings is of Hempel distance 3.

The current controversy over the interpretation of radio-stellar counts shows, in my view, that in large-scale physics as well as on the very small scale the idea of size, as applied to distributions of matter, has broken down. I shall expand this view.

The set of points that escape to infinity under iteration of a cosine map, that is, of the form $C_{a,\,b} \colon z \mapsto ae^z+be^{-z}$ for $a,\,b\in \mathbb{C}^\ast$ , consists of a collection of injective curves, called dynamic rays. If a critical value of $C_{a,\,b}$ escapes to infinity, then some of its dynamic rays overlap pairwise and split at critical points. We consider a large subclass of cosine maps with escaping critical values, including the map $z\mapsto \cosh(z)$ . We provide an explicit topological model for their dynamics on their Julia sets. We do so by first providing a model for the dynamics near infinity of any cosine map, and then modifying it to reflect the splitting of rays for functions of the subclass we study. As an application, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the overlap occurring between the dynamic rays of $z\mapsto \cosh(z)$ , and conclude that no two of its dynamic rays land together.

Let G be a monoid; that is to say, G is a set such that with each pair σ, τ of elements of G there is associated a further element of G called the ‘product’ of σ and τ and written as στ. In addition it is required that multiplication be associative and that G shall have a unit element. The so-called ‘Homology Theory’† associates with each left G-module A and each integer n (n ≥ 0) an additive Abelian group Hn (G, A), called the nth homology group of G with coefficients in A. It is natural to ask what can be said about G if all the homology groups of G after the pth vanish identically in A. In this paper we give a complete answer to this question in the case when G is an Abelian group. Before describing the main result, however, it will be convenient to define what we shall call the homology type of G. We write Hn(G, A) ≡ 0 if Hn(G, A) = 0 for all left G-modules A.

We construct certain algebraic integers $\alpha_n$ as special values of two variable theta functions in the ray class field of a certain quartic field modulo $2^n$, and study a property of prime ideals which appear in $\alpha_n$ in connection to the relationships between cyclotomic units and exponential functions and between elliptic units and elliptic theta functions.

Let $N$ be a prime number, and $X$ a curve that is intermediate to the cover $X_1(N)\rightarrow X_0(N)$. We study the automorphism group of $X$, and prove that in most cases it is generated by the Galois group of the cover $X\rightarrow X_0(N)$, and any lift of the Atkin–Lehner involution to $X$.

In Part I of this series it was shown that in a metal with overlapping energy bands, one of which is nearly full and the other nearly empty, there exists a critical temperature below which spontaneous magnetization will be present, Tc being given approximately by the equations

This paper is an investigation of the short-wave asymptotic motion due to a cylinder heaving at the surface separating two infinite liquids. The cylinder is assumed to have a smooth cross-section of an arbitrary shape that intersects the surface of separation at right angles. A non-rigorous argument is used to get the asymptotic expansion of the velocity potentials of the motion in the two liquids in the far field. The asymptotic evaluation of the coefficients describing wave-making, virtual-mass and damping are also obtained in terms of the limit potentials of the motions in the two liquids.

The Fatou–Julia theory for rational functions has been extended both to transcendental meromorphic functions and more recently to several different types of quasiregular mappings in higher dimensions. We extend the iterative theory to quasimeromorphic mappings with an essential singularity at infinity and at least one pole, constructing the Julia set for these maps. We show that this Julia set shares many properties with those for transcendental meromorphic functions and for quasiregular mappings of punctured space.

We determine the stable decompositions of the classifying spaces of metacyclic 2-groups into wedges of indecomposable spectra. The stable decompositions of classifying spaces of finite groups with metacyclic 2-Sylow subgroups are also determined.

The problem considered is that of transforming the integral equations obtained by Jones (2, 3), for diffraction by a circular disc so that they can be solved by iteration for any general incident field. A method of achieving this transformation is presented for the case of axi-symmetric incident fields. The generalization of the method to non-axi-symmetric problems is also examined.

Let (E, C) be a partially ordered vector space with positive cone C. The order-bound topology Pb(6) (order topology in the terminology of Schaefer(9)) on E is the finest locally convex topology for which every order-bounded subset of E is topologically bounded.

It is proved that every locally convex space is linearly homeomorphic to a subspace of a space which admits no non-trivial continuous linear functionals.

This paper contains an attempt, begun several years ago and only partially successful, to do for the canonical curve of genus five something similar to what W. P. Milne had done for that of genus four. A fundamental feature of Milne's work was the use of a rational normal curve of order three drawn through the six points of contact of a quadric with the sextic curve; here it is not in general possible to pass a rational curve of order four through the eight points of contact. (Exceptionally it may be possible to do so and then the development follows much the same lines as in Milne's paper: only the general case is discussed in what follows.)

1. During the last sixty years the principal questions presented by the higher singularities of plane algebraic curves have been completely solved, and definite results obtained. The two most successful lines of research have been by expansions and quadratic transformation. By each method it has been shown that a higher singularity may be looked upon as containing concealed or “latent” multiple points or lines in addition to those immediately recognized; and from each, with the help of small quantities, has been constructed a topological explanation of these latent multiple elements, which are accounted for as situated in the immediate vicinity of the point and line base of the singularity. Further, by each method it has been proved that as regards the numerical relations known as Plvicker's equations a singularity produces the same effect as a definite number of nodes, cusps, bitangents, and stationary tangents.

We show that a torus knot which is not 2-bridge has a unique irreducible bridge splitting of positive genus.

A Klein–Schottky group is an extended Kleinian group, containing no reflections and whose orientation-preserving half is a Schottky group. A dihedral-Klein–Schottky group is an extended Kleinian group generated by two different Klein–Schottky groups, both with the same orientation-preserving half. We provide a structural description of the dihedral-Klein–Schottky groups.

Let M be a handlebody of genus g, with a Schottky structure. An imaginary reflection τ of M is an orientation-reversing homeomorphism of M, of order two, whose restriction to its interior is an hyperbolic isometry having at most isolated fixed points. It is known that the number of fixed points of τ is at most g + 1; τ is called a maximal imaginary reflection if it has g + 1 fixed points. As a consequence of the structural description of the dihedral-Klein–Schottky groups, we are able to provide upper bounds for the cardinality of the set of fixed points of two or three different imaginary reflections acting on a handlebody with a Schottky structure. In particular, we show that maximal imaginary reflections are unique.
