Cha and Kim proved that if a knot K is not algebraically slice, then no iterated Bing double of K is concordant to the unlink. We prove that if K has nontrivial signature σ, then the n–iterated Bing double of K is not concordant to any boundary link with boundary surfaces of genus less than 2n−1σ. The same result holds with σ replaced by 2τ, twice the Ozsváth–Szabó knot concordance invariant.

This paper deals with the two-dimensional problem of a circular inclusion undergoing spontaneous dimensional changes in an infinite elastic medium with a circular hole. This provides a more realistic model for some physical phenomena where inclusions have found applications. The effect of a concentrated force acting at an arbitrary point of an infinite medium with a circular hole has been found as an auxiliary result. After the evaluation of the effect of a concentrated force, Eshelby's. point force approach (1) has been used to get an exact solution to the inclusion problem.

In this paper we will be concerned primarily with weak, strong and simple models of a propositional calculus, simple models being structures of a certain type in which all provable formulae of the calculus are valid. It is shown that the finite model property defined in terms of simple models holds for all calculi. This leads to a new proof of the fact that there is no general effective method for testing, given a finite structure and a calculus, whether or not the structure is a simple model of the calculus.

A very simple model, consisting of N particles moving in a one-dimensional assembly divided by potential ‘humps’ into M cells, is studied. The process of passing from a quantum-mechanical description of such an assembly to the equation of diffusion type that governs it in practice is shown to consist of at least three separate steps: ‘averaging over phases’, and letting N and M become large. The effects of these steps are considered separately. Strict irreversibility in time appears after the first step, but the assembly remains ergodic until after the second step and fluctuations persist until after the third step.

In this paper a Fuchsian group G shall be a discrete group of Möbius transformations each of which maps the unit disc △ in the complex plane onto itself. We shall also assume throughout this paper that G is both finitely generated and of the first kind.

We consider a twisted action of a discrete group G on a unital C*-algebra A and give conditions ensuring that there is a bijective correspondence between the maximal invariant ideals of A and the maximal ideals in the associated reduced C*-crossed product.

An extremum variational principle for boundary value problems described by a non-linear fourth order differential equation qIV = f(q, x) is constructed. For approximate solutions an error estimate procedure, based on the value of the functional, is developed and applied to two concrete problems.

1. The problem of this paper was first attempted some years ago at the suggestion of Sir G. I. Taylor, to whom the writer makes grateful acknowledgement, in connexion with experimental work in which he and others (5,6) had used half-pitot tubes in order to measure fluid velocities as near as possible to a fixed boundary.

Two recent papers have discussed eigenvalue problems relating to second-order, self-adjoint differential equations from the point of view of the deferred approach to the limit in the finite-difference treatment of the problem. In both cases the problem is made definite by considering the differential equation

If the system consists of a number of media, of refractive indices n0, n1, n2, …, having spherical faces whose radii of curvature are r0, r1, r2, …, the formula is [see for example, (1) or (2)]

and this is in common use amongst those concerned with the design of optical equipment. The analogous integral expression in the electron optical case has not, however, received the attention it deserves, in spite of the developments in electron optics during the past decade. In 1935 Glaser(3) presented the third-order error theory of an axially symmetric electron optical system.

Background. Riesz products are very useful for the construction of singular measures on compact, Abelian groups. Under some circumstances, two Riesz products are either equivalent or singular in the measure-theoretic sense. Exact knowledge of these circumstances has been of major interest ever since the 1930s, when Riesz's famous example (8) was recognized as a fertile source of examples of singular continuous measures. Zygmund(11) showed that any Riesz product over a Hadamard dissociate subset of ℕ is either a square integrable function or singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. Hewitt–Zuckerman(4) generalized these products to all compact, Abelian groups, introducing the notion of a dissociate subset. They extended Zygmund's result in certain cases. The next major step was taken by Brown–Moran(3) and Peyrière(6), (7), who showed that two Riesz products

The replacement of the second space derivative by finite differences reduces the simplest form of heat conduction equation to a set of first-order ordinary differential equations. These equations can be solved analytically by utilizing the spectral resolution of the matrix formed by their coefficients. For explicit boundary conditions the solution provides a direct numerical method of solving the original partial differential equation and also gives, as limiting forms, analytical solutions which are equivalent to those obtainable by using the Laplace transform. For linear implicit boundary conditions the solution again provides a direct numerical method of solving the original partial differential equation. The procedure can also be used to give an iterative method of solving non-linear equations. Numerical examples of both the direct and iterative methods are given.

The sine-Gordon (SG) equation uxt = sin u arises from many branches of physics, and now is one of the most important equations in soliton theory. There have been many works concerning its soliton solutions, Backhand transformations, symmetries and conservation laws and other properties. In this paper we prove that every polynomial symmetry of the SG equation is Hamiltonian, that is, takes the form of D-l δh/δu.

We study different aspects of the connections between local theory of Banach spaces and the problem of the extension of bilinear forms from subspaces of Banach spaces. Among other results, we prove that if X is not a Hilbert space then one may find a subspace of X for which there is no Aron–Berner extension. We also obtain that the extension of bilinear forms from all the subspaces of a given X forces such X to contain no uniform copies of ℓpn for p ∈ [1, 2). In particular, X must have type 2 − ϵ for every ϵ > 0. Also, we show that the bilinear version of the Lindenstrauss–Pełczyński and Johnson–Zippin theorems fail. We will then consider the notion of locally α-complemented subspace for a reasonable tensor norm α, and study the connections between α-local complementation and the extendability of α*-integral operators.

We investigate inclusion indices for general function spaces, not necessarily symmetric. Using them, we estimate the grade of proximity between two spaces $E\,{\hookrightarrow}\, F$ when we have certain information on the inclusion. The results are based on ideas from interpolation theory.

In this paper we extend to certain domains in m-dimensional Euclidean space Rm, m ≥ 3, some results about the boundary behaviour of harmonic functions which, in R2, are known to follow from distortion theorems for conformal mappings.

On page 196 in his lost notebook, S. Ramanujan offers evaluations of two particular Dirichlet series. In this paper, we establish Ramanujan's evaluations and more general results by various approaches. The different evaluations arising from different methods yield intriguing, unsuspecting identities.
