The statistical theory of long-range interactions between adsorbed particles on a plane lattice is worked out approximately, by treating in detail the distribution of adsorbed particles among a few sites inside and on the boundary of a circular region, and regarding the distribution outside the circle as uniform and continuous with a density Kθ per unit area, where K is the number of lattice points per unit area and θ is the fraction of surface covered by adsorbed particles. The continuous distribution begins at a distance ρ from the centre of the circle, ρ being determined by the condition that the probability of occupation of a first shell site is equal to the probability θ of occupation of the central site. Using this method, general formulae for the adsorption isotherm and the heat of adsorption are obtained. Numerical applications for dipole interactions and for quadratic and hexagonal lattices are worked out in detail and the case in which the dipole moment varies with θ is discussed.

The de Sitter group, Spin (4, 1), is a simply connected, semi-simple, ten-dimensional Lie group which can be contracted to the inhomogeneous Lorentz group. Physical systems with the de Sitter group as asymmetry group should resemble those of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group and may provide an alternative to these systems of special-relativistic physics. Details of physics in de Sitter space from the group theoretical view-point are given in (3). The de Sitter group is also known to be a symmetry group for the bound states of the hydrogen atom, and recent work has shown how this group acts on the corresponding classical system, the Kepler problem. See (8).

The considerations set out in this communication arose originally in the discussion of the refraction of surface elastic waves at the edge of a continent*. In view, however, of their general application, it is perhaps worth while to state them apart from their special context.

In two previous papers the author studied the Jacobson and nil redicals of the algebra of a commutative semigroup over a field [8] and over a commutative ring with unity [9]. This work is continued here.

Using Newtonian theory of gravitation and postulating the existence of informational waves of gravitation, a time-varying gravitational potential is obtained. When a point mass is submitted to such a potential a precession of its orbit, of the right order of magnitude, is obtained. The correct value of the angle of deflexion of light by massive bodies can also be calculated.

1. Introduction. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for a real quadratic form to be positive definite on a linear manifold, in a real vector space, explicit in terms of the dual Grassmann coordinates for the manifold.

In 1935 Tartakowski (7) proved that, in general, a cubic form in sufficiently many variables with coefficients in an algebraic number field K has a non-trivial zero in that field; and in the case when K is the rational field 57 variables suffice. Here, ‘in general’ means that the coefficients of the form do not lie in a proper subvariety of the coefficient space. Hence, Tartakowski's result holds for almost all cubic forms. Later, Lewis (5) proved that if K is any algebraic number field such that [K: Q] = n, then there exists a function ψ(n) such that every cubic form over K in m ≥ ψ(n) variables has a non-trivial zero in K. His bound, ψ(n), is extremely large; e.g. when K is the rational field, ψ(1) > 500.

A set of relativistic classical motions of a radiating electron in an electromagnetic field are derived from the principle of conservation of energy, momentum and angular momentum. It is shown that these equations lead to results more in harmony with the usual scheme of mechanics than do the Lorentz-Dirac equations. When applied to discuss the motion of the electron of the hydrogen atom, these equations permit the electron falling into the nucleus, whereas the Lorentz-Dirac equations do not allow this. When applied to consider the motion of an electron which is disturbed by a pulse of radiation, the solution is in a more symmetrical form. For scattering of light of frequency ν the expression for the scattering cross-section is found to be the same as the classical Thomson formula for small ν, and to vary as ν−4 for large ν.

Code loops are certain Moufang loop extensions of doubly even binary codes which are useful in finite group theory (e.g. Conway's construction of the Monster). We give several methods for explicitly constructing code loops as centrally twisted products. More specifically, after establishing some preliminary examples, we show how to use decompositions of codes to build code loops out of more familiar pieces, such as abelian groups, extraspecial groups, or the octonion loop. In particular, we use Turyn's construction of the Golay code to give a simple explicit construction of the Parker loop, one which may have applications to the study of the Monster.

The concept of the Green's vibrational function given in an earlier paper by the author is used to obtain a general expression for the disturbance from a point source. The potential due to transient sources of sound moving with subsonic and supersonic velocities is derived from this. It is found that the Doppler effect for a supersonic source differs from that for a subsonic source. In the former case it is found that two frequencies are heard simultaneously from a source emitting a note of one frequency.

The theory is applied to determine some solutions of the two dimensional equation of supersonic, irrotational compressible flow, corresponding to the flow around an aerofoil taking into consideration the entropy changes at the shock wave.

The velocities of electrons emerging through an aperture in an anode to which they were accelerated have been investigated.

The velocity distribution of electrons passing through holes ranging from 0·13 mm. to 3·24 mm. in diameter in a thin copper sheet is shown in Fig. 2. In this case the accelerating field between filament and anode was 204 volts.

Corresponding results for a capillary tube 0·40 mm. in diameter and 16 mm. long are shown in Fig. 3, where the curves are plotted for different accelerating potentials. Experiments were also made with shorter lengths, down to 5 mm., and with a tube 1·25 mm. in diameter. All the tubes investigated gave the same distribution of velocities of the electrons in the emergent beam, within the limits of error of the experiments.

If F is a (commutative) field let XF denote the class of all groups G such that every irreducible FG module has finite dimension over F. In the first paper (9) of this series we classified finitely generated soluble XF-groups for each field F and in the second (10) we characterized soluble XF-groups for each field F of characteristic zero. Here we consider soluble XF-groups over fields F of positive characteristic.

The kernel of a non-trivial linear functional φ on a linear space E is a maximal proper linear subspace of E which determines φ up to a non-zero multiple. Does a similar result hold for homomorphisms of a group G into the additive group R of the real numbers?

Let BP denote the localization at υn, of the Brown-Peterson spectrum (associated to the prime p). There is a related ring spectrum E(n) with homotopy ring

(as a quotient ring of in fact the cohomology theory E(n)*( ) is determined via a Conner-Floyd type isomorphism from on finite complexes, and moreover E(n) and BP are in the same Bousfield class (see [2, 14]). Although it is known (essentially from [17]) that BP cannot be a product of suspensions of E(n) in a multiplicative sense, D. Ravenel conjectured that such a splitting might occur after suitable completion of these spectra (see the introduction to [14]). This question was the original motivation of the present paper; however in proving Ravenel's conjecture we were naturally led to the consideration of some fundamental results in the theory of liftings of formal group laws and ‘change of ring’ results for Ext groups occurring in connection with the work of [10, 11, 12].

Given a sequence of n real numbers {Si}i⩽n, we consider the longest weakly increasing subsequence, namely i1 < i2 < . . . < iL with Sik ⩽ Sik+1 and L maximal. When the elements Si are i.i.d. uniform random variables, Vershik and Kerov, and Logan and Shepp proved that ${\mathbb E} L=(2+o(1)) \sqrt{n}$.

We consider the case when {Si}i⩽n is a random walk on ℝ with increments of mean zero and finite (positive) variance. In this case, it is well known (e.g., using record times) that the length of the longest increasing subsequence satisfies ${\mathbb E} L\geq c\sqrt{n}$. Our main result is an upper bound ${\mathbb E} L\leq n^{1/2 + o(1)}$, establishing the leading asymptotic behavior. If {Si}i⩽n is a simple random walk on ℤ, we improve the lower bound by showing that ${\mathbb E} L \geq c\sqrt{n} \log{n}$.

We also show that if {Si} is a simple random walk in ℤ2, then there is a subsequence of {Si}i⩽n of expected length at least cn1/3 that is increasing in each coordinate. The above one-dimensional result yields an upper bound of n1/2+o(1). The problem of determining the correct exponent remains open.

We discuss and compare several necessary criteria for the local extremality of the Koebe mapping in extremal problems for univalent functions. These criteria are applied to study Robertson type inequalities and also to investigate a conjecture of Bombieri.

In this paper we study the group of pointed proper homotopy classes of proper pointed maps from (ℝn+1, 0) to a pointed σ-compact space (X, x) and prove the existence of a diagram of exact sequences linking the groups with the Brown—Grossman groups , the Steenrod groups πn(X) and the classical Hurewicz homotopy groups πn(X).

1. Introduction. The importance of the frequency spectrum of the lattice in problems concerning the properties of the crystalline state has often been emphasized. In particular, all the properties of a crystal which depend on the heat motion of the constituent particles require for their explanation a knowledge of the actual form of the vibrational spectrum.

Let {uk} be a Lucas sequence. A standard technique for determining the perfect powers in the sequence {uk} combines bounds coming from linear forms in logarithms with local information obtained via Frey curves and modularity. The key to this approach is the fact that the equation uk = xn can be translated into a ternary equation of the form ay2 = bx2n + c (with a, b, c ∈ ℤ) for which Frey curves are available. In this paper we consider shifted powers in Lucas sequences, and consequently equations of the form uk = xn+c which do not typically correspond to ternary equations with rational unknowns. However, they do, under certain hypotheses, lead to ternary equations with unknowns in totally real fields, allowing us to employ Frey curves over those fields instead of Frey curves defined over ℚ. We illustrate this approach by showing that the quaternary Diophantine equation x2n±6xn + 1 = 8y2 has no solutions in positive integers x, y, n with x, n > 1.

The number of configurations of mixtures of dimer and single molecules, of trimer and single molecules and of trimer and dimer molecules is examined by using the Bethe technique when there may be some vacant sites. This condition provides a check on the internal consistency of the Bethe method through the integrability of the resulting partial differential equations.
