We prove the toral rank conjecture of Halperin in some new cases. Our results apply to certain elliptic spaces that have a two-stage Sullivan minimal model, and are obtained by combining new lower bounds for the dimension of the cohomology and new upper bounds for the toral rank. The paper concludes with examples and suggestions for future work.

Every monic, degree n polynomial in Fq[x;] is the characteristic polynomial of at least one n × n matrix (with entries in the finite field Fq), but they do not appear with equal frequency. There is no a priori reason that the characteristic polynomial of a typical matrix should resemble a typical monic degree n polynomial. Nevertheless, we prove a precise version of the following heuristic statement: ‘Excepting its small factors, the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix is random.’

In this article, we study the amenability of Banach algebras in general, and that of Lipschitz algebras in particular. After introducing an alternative definition of amenability, we extend a result of [5], thereby proving a new characterization of amenability for Banach algebras. This characterization relates the amenability of a Banach algebra A to the space of bounded homomorphisms from A into another Banach algebra B (Theorem 4). This result allows us to solve the problem of amenability for virtually all Lipschitz algebras (of complex or Banach algebra valued functions), a class of algebras which has been studied in [2], [4] and [5].

In three other papers in this number of the Proceedings will be found direct experimental evidence that in a β-ray disintegration the γ-rays are emitted after the electron has been ejected from the nucleus. In this paper we discuss this result in more detail and especially its bearing on the general picture of the β-ray disintegration.

We show that on a surface locally every affine torsion-free connection is projectively equivalent to a Weyl connection. First, this is done using exterior differential system theory. Second, this is done by showing that the solutions of the relevant PDE are in one-to-one correspondence with the sections of the ‘twistor’ bundle of conformal inner products having holomorphic image. The second solution allows to use standard results in algebraic geometry to show that the Weyl connections on the two-sphere whose geodesics are the great circles are in one-to-one correspondence with the smooth quadrics without real points in the complex projective plane.

In this paper, we study orbifold constructions associated with the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra. As an application, we prove that the structure of a strongly regular holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 is uniquely determined by its weight one Lie algebra if the Lie algebra has the type A3,43A1,2, A4,52, D4,12A2,6, A6,7, A7,4A1,13, D5,8A1,2 or D6,5A1,12 by using the reverse orbifold construction. Our result also provides alternative constructions of these vertex operator algebras (except for the case A6,7) from the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra.

We construct several new classes of transcendental entire functions, f, such that both the escaping set, I(f), and the fast escaping set, A(f), have a structure known as a spider's web. We show that some of these classes have a degree of stability under changes in the function. We show that new examples of functions for which I(f) and A(f) are spiders' webs can be constructed by composition, by differentiation, and by integration of existing examples. We use a property of spiders' webs to give new results concerning functions with no unbounded Fatou components.

If X is a topological space with base point, then a based map m: X × X → X is called a multiplication if m restricted to each factor of X × X is homotopic to the identity map of X. The pair (X, m) is then called an H-space. If A is a based topological space and (X, m) is an H-space, then the multiplication m induces a binary operation on the set [A, X] of based homotopy classes of maps of A into X. A classical result due to James [6, theorem 1·1 asserts that if A is a CW-complex and (X, m) is an H-space, then the binary operation gives [A, X] the structure of an algebraic loop. That is, [A, X] has a two-sided identity element and if a, b ∈[A, X], then the equations ax = b and ya = b have unique solutions x, y ∈ [A, X]. Thus it is meaningful to consider loop-theoretic properties of H-spaces. In this paper we make a detailed study of the following loop-theoretic notions applied to H-spaces: inversivity, power-associativity, quasi-commutativity and the Moufang property – see Section 2 for the definitions. If an H-space is Moufang, then it has the other three properties. Moreover, an associative loop is Moufang, and so a homotopy-associative H-space has all four properties. Since many of the standard H-spaces are homotopy-associative, we are particularly interested in determining when an H-space, in particular a finite CW H-space, does not have one of these properties.

Let π:M→B be a horizontally conformal submersion. We give necessary curvature conditions on the manifolds M and B, which lead to non-existence results for certain horizontally conformal maps, and harmonic morphisms. We then classify all such maps between open subsets of Euclidean spaces, which additionally have totally geodesic fibres and are horizontally homothetic. They are orthogonal projections on each connected component, followed by a homothety.

In this paper, we prove a uniform version of a theorem of Brodmann about annihilation of local cohomology modules. As a corollary of this, we deduce a generalization of a theorem of Hochster and Huneke about uniform annihilation of Koszul homology.

We give a lower bound on the Loewy length of a p-block of a finite group in terms of its defect. We then discuss blocks with small Loewy length. Since blocks with Loewy length at most 3 are known, we focus on blocks of Loewy length 4 and provide a relatively short list of possible defect groups. It turns out that p-solvable groups can only admit blocks of Loewy length 4 if p=2. However, we find (principal) blocks of simple groups with Loewy length 4 and defect 1 for all p ≡ 1 (mod 3). We also consider sporadic, symmetric and simple groups of Lie type in defining characteristic. Finally, we give stronger conditions on the Loewy length of a block with cyclic defect group in terms of its Brauer tree.

Results of Kirillov and Reshetikhin on constructing invariants of framed links from the quantum group SU(2)q are adapted to give a simple formula relating the invariants for a satellite link to those of the companion and pattern links used in its construction. The special case of parallel links is treated first. It is shown as a consequence that any SU(2)q-invariant of a link L is a linear combination of Jones polynomials of parallels of L, where the combination is determined explicitly from the representation ring of SU(2). As a simple illustration Yamada's relation between the Jones polynomial of the 2-parallel of L and an evaluation of Kauffman's polynomial for sublinks of L is deduced.

There are different definitions of ends in non-locally-finite graphs which are all equivalent in the locally finite case. We prove the compactness of the end-topology that is based on the principle of removing finite sets of vertices and give a proof of the compactness of the end-topology that is constructed by the principle of removing finite sets of edges. For the latter case there exists already a proof in [1], which only works on graphs with countably infinite vertex sets and in contrast to which we do not use the Theorem of Tychonoff. We also construct a new topology of ends that arises from the principle of removing sets of vertices with finite diameter and give applications that underline the advantages of this new definition.

Examples are given of legendrian links in the manifold of cooriented contact elements of the plane, or equivalently, in the 1-jet space of the circle which are not equivalent via an isotopy of contact diffeomorphisms. These examples have generalizations to linked legendrian spheres in contact manifolds diffeomorphic to ℝn×Sn−1. These links are distinguished by applying the theory of generating functions to contact manifolds.

If we consider, by the method of small oscillations, the stability of a viscous fluid flow in which the undisturbed velocity is parallel to the axis of x and its magnitude U is a function of y only (x, y, z being rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates), and if we assume that any possible disturbance may be analysed into a number (usually infinite) of principal disturbances, each of which involves the time only through a single exponential factor, then it has been proved by Squire, by supposing the disturbance analysed also into constituents which are simple harmonic functions of x and z, and considering only a single constituent, that if instability occurs at all, it will occur for the lowest Reynolds number for a disturbance which is two-dimensional, in the x, y plane. Hence only two-dimensional disturbances need be considered. The velocity components in the disturbed motion will be denoted by (U + u, v). Since only infinitesimal disturbances are considered, all terms in the equations of motion which are quadratic in u and v are neglected. When u and v are taken to be functions of y multiplied by ei(αx−βi), the equation of continuity becomes

When two triangles, ABC and A′B′C′, are perspective from a point 0, their pairs of corresponding sides meet on a line 0, the axis of perspective. The line OA passes through A′ and some point on 0. These four points have a certain cross ratio which is the same if B or C is used instead of A. The reciprocal cross ratio arises if A′B′C′ is regarded as the first triangle and ABC the second. If G is a finite group of order n and X is a subset of G consisting of pairwise non-commuting elements, then |X| ≤ n/2 + 1.

A detailed study is made of angular oscillations of small amplitude about a fixed axis of a rigid sphere embedded in an infinite elastic solid. Three modes of vibration of the sphere are considered: steady oscillations arising from the application of a periodic torque; forced oscillations produced by an arbitrary time-dependent torque; and free oscillations excited by an impulsive torque. Due to the transfer of energy to the surrounding material by the radiation of an elastic shear wave, free oscillations of the sphere are damped, the principal parameter affecting the damping being the density contrast between the sphere and its surroundings. Illustrative numerical results, referring to steady and free oscillations of the sphere, are presented in graphical form.

We discuss the exact number of almost periodic solutions of certain ordinary differential equations of the second order. The class of equations under consideration is inspired by a well-known result in the area of elliptic boundary value problems.
