The effect of small-scale wavefront perturbations on laser radiation is investigated at flux densities close to maximum. The model and calculated results for the effect of the degree of radiation coherence on the laser radiation brightness as functions of flux density and length and shape of the active medium are presented. For the restricted coherence of the laser radiation, the rate of small-scale perturbation growth is shown to decrease in theactive medium. The principal optical scheme of a laser for fusion experiments, with the maximum radiation brightness, is given as an example.

Experiments are presented that demonstrate the high stopping power of fully ionized hydrogen plasma for low-energy heavy ions. A plasma with electron densities up to 7.1016 cm–3 at temperatures above 1 eV was created by an electrical discharge. In the described experiment, a stopping power of 1.08 GeV/(mg/cm2) was measured using singly charged krypton ions at 45–keV/u energy. The measured stopping power exceeds the corresponding value in cold hydrogen gas by a factor of 35. These measurements confirm the theoretical stopping power predictions close to the expected maximum in a fully ionized plasma.

Two-dimensional (2D) FLASH simulations were run with Spitzer-Härm conductivity on and off in an attempt to simulate a laser-produced blast wave. Dissociation, ionization, recombination, and radiative cooling were not included. An initial Gaussian temperature profile with T0 = 120 eV and spot radius r0 = 25 μm was used assuming 1 μm thickness of the CH disk is ablated into the background nitrogen gas. Evolution of the blast wave differs slightly between the cases of Spitzer-Härm on and off, and neither case matches well with experiment. Due to the high temperatures involved, a thermal wave should be expected such that the Spitzer-Härm conductivity on case is more likely. A simulation run with an initial temperature of ∼ 4 keV might match better with experiment.

The simultaneous formation of the two deuterium plasma foci has been reported recently by Hou et al. in a Mather type two-gun plasma focus assembly with maximum bank energy of ∼700 kJ. In addition, these plasmas will evolve and then produce a disk-shaped plasma in the middle of the two plasma foci. Soft X-ray filter techniques which allow measurements of the electron temperature at both pinch points and the middle point yielded a few hundred eV for these three regions. Neutron localization measurements which were carried out with a collimator and a scintillator-fiber-photomultiplier assembly indicate that an enhancement of ∼80% in neutron yield is observed in the middle region as the separation between two electrodes is 9.1cm. Further experimental evidence shows that the neutron production in the middle region is the result of the beam-beam interaction in nature.

The method for measuring synchronization error of ultra-short pulses was introduced based on the principle of non-collinear cross-correlation. The analytical expression for the measurement was deduced according to the cross-correlation signal. The influences of angular error on the measurement were analyzed by simulated experiments. The incident angle and the angular error tolerance were both required to be considered and determined for the synchronization error measurement of ultra-short pulses. The results provide a theoretical basis for the measurement and control of the synchronization error in the coherent beam combination, plasma parameter diagnosis, etc.

Based on realistic numerical simulations of the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation describing a hydrogen atom interacting with a strong electromagnetic field, the influence of the magnetic component is studied. The same computational techniques can be applied to the case of strong field photoionization as well as to the case of ionization by an incident relativistic heavy ion. One of the main consequences, in the strong-laser-field case, is the presence of true even harmonics of the incoming field. In the heavy ion impact, the asymmetry of the wave function reveals the importance of the nondipole nature of the interaction.

Plasma creation occurs when the frequency of a tunable dye laser is adjusted to the 589 nm D-doublet of the sodium atom. Occurrence and Stark broadening of emission lines in the fluorescence light are used as diagnostics. The time history of the electron density and temperature is inferred from these measurements. The peak electron density was found to be above 5 · 1016 cm−3 with a temperature lower than 1 eV.

Energy gain of electron beams in bubble regime of the laser wakefield accelerator can be optimized by improving the acceleration length, radial accelerating and focusing force, number of monoenergetic electrons trapped inside the bubble, and increasing dephasing length. In order to enlarge the dephasing length, the phase velocity of the plasma wave can be increased by optimizing the plasma density profile. We report the estimation of dephasing length using plasma density distribution with the flat and linear-upward profile using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The size of wakefield bubble depends on the plasma density. With a positive plasma density gradient, the size of bubble decreases. The front and trail part of wake bubble will have different phase velocity in plasma density gradient region. After density transition in constant density region, the bubble elongates and the velocity of the back part of the bubble increases so that the accelerated electron phase synchronizes with the phase of the plasma wave. In a result, the electron acceleration length enhances to improve the beam quality.

Unconventional, promising approaches to inertial fusion energy (IFE) proposed and studied in the framework of IFE keep-in-touch activity at Frascati EURATOM-ENEA Association will be reconsidered for the present more advanced technological context associated to a planned large installations scenario. Then the possibility to generate laser-produced fast heavy-ion sources (e.g., Bi ions, tens GeV) will be explored taking as reference results obtained in the FIGEX experiment scaled toward thermonuclear regimes. A possible dimensioning of such sources will be also given as well as the associated laser requirements.

The big lasers for inertial fusion (NIF or LMJ) may be used with 2 to 3 times larger pulse energy if instead of the third harmonics, the fundamental wavelength is applied. A necessary condition especially for direct drive is then to suppress the stochastic (15 ps) pulsation of the interaction as the basic obstacle of anomalous interaction. The experiments by Maddever and the numerical analysis using the genuine two-fluid model resulted in the knowledge that appropriate application of smoothing is necessary to suppress primarily the pulsation and, to a lesser extent, the self-focusing and filamentation. With these larger laser pulses, fusion gains of 35 and above can be reached suing the very uncomplicated and robust volume ignition.

Results in some directions of the target technology for research on high energy density and laser fusion at the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre–All-Russia Research Institute of Experimental Physics for the last three years are presented. The results of development of optical and X-ray methods of characterization and manufacturing techniques of targets for studying the equation-of-state at high pressures and the condensed rare gas targets for the influence of pulse-repeated laser irradiation are given.

On the basis of coupled neutronic/hydrodynamic calculations, we examine the neutron heating effects on the ignition and burn propagation in laser-imploded D-T pellets. The fusionproduced neutrons deposit their energy all over the pellet region since the mean-free-path of the neutron is long. The fraction of neutron energies deposited to the central spark region during the ignition phase is too small to reduce the threshold energy of the laser for ignition. In the burn phase, the neutron heating decreases the maximum compression ratio and accelerates the plasma expansion. The inclusion of neutron heating hence decreases the pellet gain from the value in the case without neutron heating. Calculations neglecting the transport of neutron recoils overestimate the neutron heating rate in the reactor-grade pellets.

Cylindrical magnetrons with rotating cathodes have found wide application in the thin-film coating deposition technologies owing to a higher degree of the target utilization and used power level as compared with planar magnetrons. The aim of this work was to increase the efficiency of cylindrical magnetrons. It is known that the region of uniform coatings deposition with extended magnetrons is essentially lower than the sputtered cathode length. The actual achievable cathode utilization degree is limited, with the regions at cathode ends having a higher wear rate than the central part. To eliminate these shortcomings, experiments were carried out on the creation of a magnetic system to allow an increase of the coating deposition uniformity and target utilization. Resulting from the investigations that were carried out, a magnetic system design with an increased magnetic field at its ends (by 5–15%) and modified turn-around parts has been developed. This magnetic system design allows extending the coating deposition region with the uniformity of ±1% by 12.5 cm and completely eliminating accelerated erosion of the end cathode parts. The obtained results are promising for use in technologies of deposition of thin-film coatings with a high degree of uniformity (no worse than ±1%) onto large-area substrates.

The general possibility of the extended (∼30 cm) closed-drift ion source application for deposition of wear-resistant amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films on large-area dielectric substrates, in particular, on carbon-fiber plastic, is shown. Parameters of the “ion” and the “plasma” regimes of the ion source operation in argon and methane are defined. It is shown that the ion current nonuniformity is in the range of ±5–15% depending on the operation mode. Optimum conditions for the substrate precleaning in argon and hard, well-adhered a-C:H films deposition from methane are determined. The films are characterized by high hardness (∼11 GPa) and low surface roughness (∼0.13 nm) that leads to a several times lower friction coefficient (0.05) and wear rate (0.001 μm3m−1N−1) compared to glass and carbon-fiber plastic substrates.

The evolution and long-time stability of a double layer in a discrete auroral arc requires that the parallel current in the arc, which may be considered uniform at the source, be diverted within the arc to charge the flanks of the U-shaped double-layer potential structure. A simple model is presented in which this current re-distribution is effected by anomalous transport based on electrosatic lower hybrid waves driven by the flank structure itself. This process provides the limiting constraint on the double-layer potential. The flank charging may be represented as that of a nonlinear transmission line. A simplified model circuit, in which the transmission line is represented by a nonlinear impedance in parallel with a variable resistor, is incorporated in a 1-d simulation model to give the current density at the DL boundaries. Results are presented for the scaling of the DL potential as a function of the width of the arc and the saturation efficiency of the lower hybrid instability mechanism.

The one-dimensional behavior of a thin plasma foil heated by laser is studied, emphasizing on the fully kinetic effects associated with initial energetic electrons using a relativistic kinetic 1D3V Particle-In-Cell code. For this purpose, the generalized Lorentzian (Kappa) function inclusive the high energy tail is employed for initial electron distribution. The presence of the initially high-energy electrons leads to a different ion energy spectrum than the initially Maxwellian distribution. It is shown for the smaller Kappa parameter k where the high energy tail of the electron distribution function becomes more significant, the electron cooling rate increases. Moreover, the spatiotemporal evolution of electric field is strongly affected by the initial super-thermal electrons.

Usually, the high-power microwave (HPM) devices suffer from impedance collapse and cathode material degradation or even failure. When the intense electron beam bombards the anode (or named as collector in HPM device), an anode plasma could appear under certain conditions. In this case, the impedance collapse is caused by the expansions of the cathode and anode plasmas and diode current overshot caused by the bipolar flow. In this paper, characterization of a short-pulse high-power diode operated with anode effects with a dielectric fiber (velvet) cathode is discussed. The bipolar flow (or anode plasma) is indeed evident at beam power densities ~11 MW/cm2 and the pulse durations of ~50 ns. The analysis results of the deposit dose and thermal regime of the anode show that the electron stimulated desorption played an important role in the generation of anode plasma in this case. With the effect of anode plasma, the appearance of local cathode plasma flares (or nonuniform electron emission) is particularly detrimental for the diode closure. Micro-structure and elemental surface compositions of cathode are changed by the anode splashing, which is very harmful to the performance of cathode.

We report numerical results of the linear growth of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) in compressible fluids and in the presence of a magnetic field. These results are obtained with the Lagrangian code LPC-MHD in which media are supposed to be compressible ideal gases. We first applied a magnetic field perpendicular to the wave vector and perpendicular to the shock wave propagation and observed no changes on the perturbation growth velocity compared to the case without magnetic field. We also considered the configuration where the magnetic field is parallel to the wave vector. We observed the stabilization of the instability with oscillations of the perturbations amplitude. Numerical results are compared to impulsive acceleration model of the RMI in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, in the non-compressible limit. A good agreement is obtained between numerical results and model for both the amplitude and the frequency of oscillations. Compressibility seems to have negligible effects.

Plasma focus is one type of ion source with energy up to few MeV. While some efforts have been made to understand the physics of ion beam acceleration in plasma focus devices (PFD), an acceptable clarification does not exist yet. In this work, the procedure of ions) electrons) acceleration in PFDs to the MeV energy is investigated theoretically. Moreover, the trajectory of electrons (ions) and their angular distribution are studied. The simulations are carried out by COMSOL Multiphysics version 5.2 for a 4.5 kJ Mather type PFD. The results of simulations and calculations show that trapped ions in the negative potential of electrons, their movement toward the top of the anode and the drift motion due to electrical and magnetic fields near the top of the anode are the main causes of high energy electrons (ions) production and acceleration.
