Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of a two-foil magnetoinsulated vircator is carried out. Evolution of electron phase portrait has been studied. Formation of two regions with a squeezed state of electron beam is observed, separated from each other by an electronic phase vortex. The power of two-foil vircator's microwave generation was calculated. It is demonstrated that in the phase vortex mode, the power of vircator's microwave radiation may excel the outcome power of a usual one-foil vircator by two times. The spectral characteristics of two-foil vircators were studied. It was found that it is necessary to change the energy of electrons for the variation of primary microwave generation frequency.

The shadow monochromatic backlighting (SMB) scheme, a modification of the well-known soft X-ray monochromatic backlighting scheme, is proposed. It is based on a spherical crystal as the dispersive element and extends the traditional scheme by allowing one to work with a wide range of Bragg angles and thus in a wide spectral range. The advantages of the new scheme are demonstrated experimentally and supported numerically by ray-tracing simulations. In the experiments, the X-ray backlighter source is a laser-produced plasma, created by the interaction of an ultrashort pulse, Ti:Sapphire laser (120 fs, 3–5 mJ, 1016 W/cm2 on target) or a short wavelength XeCl laser (10 ns, 1–2 J, 1013 W/cm2 on target) with various solid targets (Dy, Ni + Cr, BaF2). In both experiments, the X-ray sources are well localized spatially (∼20 μm) and are spectrally tunable in a relatively wide wavelength range (λ = 8–15 Å). High quality monochromatic (δλ/λ ∼ 10−5–10−3) images with high spatial resolution (up to ∼4 μm) over a large field of view (a few square millimeters) were obtained. Utilization of spherically bent crystals to obtain high-resolution, large field, monochromatic images in a wide range of Bragg angles (35° < Θ < 90°) is demonstrated for the first time.

Recent experimental results demonstrated that well formed plasma jets can be produced at laser interaction with targets made of materials with high atomic number (A ≥ 29 where A = 29 corresponds to Cu). On the contrary, it is impossible to launch a plasma jet on low-A material targets like plastic. This paper is aimed at explanation of this difference by considering mechanisms responsible for plasma jet formation, i.e., the radiative cooling of ablative plasma and the influence of target irradiation annular profile speculated hitherto, newly complemented by different expansion regimes of the Cu and plastic plasmas (provided by numerical simulations). The experiment was carried out with the PALS iodine laser. Two different planar massive targets, plastic and Cu, as well as the plastic target covered by thin Cu layers of various thicknesses were irradiated by the third harmonic laser beam of energy of 30 J, pulse duration of 250 ps (full width at half maximum), and the focal spot radius of 400 µm. To find the most suitable range of these layers (from 28 to 190 nm) a simple analytical model of laser-driven evaporation was developed. Three-frame laser interferometer and an X-ray streak camera were used as two main diagnostic tools. Numerical modeling was performed with the use of two-dimensional hydrodynamic code ATLANT-HE. Results provided from experiments and theoretical analyses have proved that the process of plasma jet formation is rather complex. Relative importance of the three mechanisms mentioned above depends on the target irradiation geometry as well as the target material used.

This paper represents the results of a study of angular distribution of laser produced ions (LPI) of Al, Cu, and Ag. The angular distribution is studied by CR-39 (SSNTD) and ion assisted sputtering experiments. A Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser (1.064 μm, 1.1 MW) with 10 mJ pulsed energy was used to produce the Ag ions, which were detected by CR-39 detector mounted at −17.5°, 0°, 17.5°, 30°, 60°, and 90° from the normal to the target placed at a distance of 9 cm from the target. Etched CR-39 detectors then observed under the Motic DMB Series optical microscope. A bunch of ions was detected along the normal of target due to self generated collimation of ions. This is termed as Forward Peaking of Laser Produced Ions. Similar results were also observed from sputtering of polished Al substrate by laser produced ions of Cu and Sputtering of polished Cu substrate by laser produced ions of Al. The surface morphology of the ion irradiated samples were observed under the Scanning Electron microscope (SEM) S 300 Hi-tech. Formation of a circular damage on the surface of the substrates by irradiation conforms the ions collimation along the normal or Forward Peaking of ions.

The dependence of nanoparticle size distributions on laser intensity profile was determined during infrared femtosecond laser ablation of silver targets in air. Laser parameters were adjusted to ablate at the same peak fluence with spatially homogeneous (flat-top) and inhomogeneous (Gaussian) intensity distributions formed by diffractive optical elements. Aerodynamic particle size was measured online by an electric low-pressure cascade impactor. Narrower size distributions were detected for the flat-top intensity profile in the fluence range from 0.6 to 4.4 J/cm2, while the Gaussian beam produced broad and bimodal distributions. The aerodynamic number frequency of the primary nanoparticulate fraction (40 nm) was equal to the number frequency of the submicron agglomerate fraction (200 nm) at laser fluence of 1 J/cm2. The Feret diameter of primary particles was 80 nm. Geometrical interpretation of the irradiated spots at the corresponding laser fluence regimes explains the formation of bimodal (submicron and nanoparticulate) size distribution in the case of Gaussian beams. The bimodality is attributed to different thermalization pathways during laser ablation.

This paper is devoted to the engineering embodiment of the modern methods for producing charged ion and electron beams by extracting them from the plasma of a discharge. Electron beams use to execute electron-beam welding, annealing, and surface heating of materials and to realize plasmochemical reactions stimulated by fast electrons. Ion beams allow realization of technologies of ion implantation or ion-assisted deposition of coatings thereby opening new prospects for the creation of compounds and alloys by the method that makes it possible to obtain desired parameters and functional properties of the surface. A detailed description is given to the performance and design of devices producing beams of this type: the ion and electron sources being developed at the laboratory of plasma sources of the Institute of High-Current Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the laboratory of plasma electronics of Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics.

The temporal contrast is classified into two main regimes, the nanosecond-scale and the picosecond-scale contrast prior to the main pulse. The Lund terawatt laser system is shown to be improved on the nano- and picosecond-scale by a factor of 10 and 50, respectively, when it was optimized for contrast but not for energy. Calculations are also presented to emphasize the role of angular dispersion on the picosecond contrast. Finally we show a compromise between the duration and contrast of femtosecond laser pulses amplified in an optical parametric (chirped pulse) amplifier.

Small water droplets (20 micron in diameter) have been exposed to intense (∼ 1019 W/cm2) laser pulses in order to study ultrashort (∼ 35 fs) laser pulse driven ion acceleration. Ion emission spectra registered simultaneously in forward and backward direction in respect to the incident laser beam carry similar integral ion energy but show different ion cutoff energies. With simple model estimations on basis of the confined and spherical geometry of the droplet-target, we inferred acceleration field strengths of about (0.7–2) MV/μm. Up to 9% of the incident laser energy is converted to kinetic energy of ions, which have been accelerated to energies above 100 keV and up to 1.5 MeV. A laser pedestal at an intensity of about 10−7 of the peak intensity at 1–2 ns in front of the pulse peak still limits the achievable cutoff energies of emitted protons from the droplet. The observed increase of cutoff energies with an enhanced temporal contrast of the laser pulse is elucidated within a simple acceleration model.

The evolution of non-equilibrium plasma channel created in xenon by powerful KrF-femtosecond laser pulse is studied. It is demonstrated that such a plasma channel can be used as a waveguide for both transportation and amplification of the microwave radiation. The specific features of such a plasma waveguide are studied on the basis of the self-consistent solution of the kinetic Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution function in different spatial points of the gas media and the wave equation in slow-varying amplitude approximation for the microwave radiation guided and amplified in the channel.

In this work, we review current trends in China to investigate beam plasma interaction phenomena. Recent progresses in China on low energy heavy ions and plasma interaction, ion beam-plasma interactions under the influences of magnetic fields, high energy heavy ion radiography through marginal range method, energy deposition of highly charged ions on surfaces and Raman spectroscopy of surfaces after irradiation of highly charged ions are presented.

Fusion reactions of solid density boron-11 with protons after initiation of a fusion flame by very powerful picosecond laser pulses were derived for plane geometry. The problem of lateral energy losses with laser beams was solved by using spherical geometry, where however the gains are limited. The other elimination of losses now available by cylinder-axis symmetric 10 kilotesla magnetic fields is possible needing laser powers in the exawatt range. Estimations are presented by varying parameters for reducing the necessary laser pulse powers to lower values by up to a factor 100.

Studies of single-event laser-target interaction for fusion reaction schemes leading to volume ignition are discussed. Conditions were explored where single-event ns-laser pulses give rise to temperatures sufficient for volume ignition. Thus, ignition is possible, particularly if X-ray reabsorption is sufficiently high. Unfortunately, this scheme requires laser pulses with energies above 5 MJ and target densities of compressed DT above 1000 g/cm−3. Both requirements are quite demanding for near term systems. Nevertheless the present state technology and the detailed knowledge about volume ignition at direct drive are a basis. Systems as NIF or LMJ can well confirm these physics-clarified conditions and the technology for large laser systems with sufficient repetition rate and for a drastic reduction of the size and costs is necessary and possible and by physics similar to the known reductions in transistor development.

Very good absorption of ultra short laser pulses by clusters is a well established fact. Efficient collisional absorption occurs only in the initial phase of the pulse. However, experiments and numerical simulations show that even after collisional absorption becomes inefficient subsequent to heating of the electrons, strong absorption continues. There have been a few attempts to model this phenomenon in terms of driven “linear” oscillator models with time dependent eigen-frequencies. Here we propose a nonlinear oscillator model and show that nonlinear resonance is the leading mechanism responsible for the collisionless absorption. Further it is demonstrated, on the basis of Lyapunov spectra, that laser-cluster interaction, under certain conditions, exhibits chaotic behavior.

With a Petawatt class CPA laser of the LLNL Livermore or the proposed GSI (Darmstadt) type laser, interactions with matter can be studied in the upper 1020 W/cm2 regime. With such a laser focused into an underdense plasma, strong electron bursts with energies up to several 100 MeV are ejected in a forward direction. This leads to a comparable burst of bremsstrahlung radiation in the presence of high-Z material. Here, we discuss the corresponding γ-induced nuclear reactions including secondary particle production, including pions. Due to the threshold behavior in the production, and the advantage of delayed detection, we propose to employ these reactions for probing the initial plasma conditions.

We present a novel technique for focusing and energy selection of high-current, MeV proton/ion beams. This method employs a hollow micro-cylinder that is irradiated at the outer wall by a high intensity, ultra-short laser pulse. The relativistic electrons produced are injected through the cylinder's wall, spread evenly on the inner wall surface of the cylinder, and initiate a hot plasma expansion. A transient radial electric field (107–1010 V/m) is associated with the expansion. The transient electrostatic field induces the focusing and the selection of a narrow band component out of the broadband poly-energetic energy spectrum of the protons generated from a separate laser irradiated thin foil target that are directed axially through the cylinder. The energy selection is tunable by changing the timing of the two laser pulses. Computer simulations carried out for similar parameters as used in the experiments explain the working of the micro-lens.

Repeated plasma outbursts were recognized at our analyzing currents of the fast carbon and fluorine ions produced with the sub-nanosecond PALS laser beam (λ0 = 1.315 µm, τL = ≈350 ps, Imax ≈ 6 × 1015 W/cm2) focused onto polytetrafluoroethylene and polyethylene targets. This study deals with a repetitive occurrence of doublets of C6+-C5+ and F9+-F8+ ion peaks in the time-of-flight (TOF) spectra, whose TOF can be related to the same accelerating voltage: . The repeated occurrence of ion outbursts containing fully ionized ions can be characterized by a set of discrete voltages Ui, where the subscript i ∈ (1, N) labels the outbursts of ions from the fastest one (i = 1) up to the slowest and in the TOF spectrum yet distinguishable outburst (i = N). These discrete values could indicate plasma pulsations followed by repetitive outbursts of ions. The ions expand with a velocity up to ≈9 × 108 cm/s. The corresponding values of the accelerating voltage of ≈800 kv, and the temperature of ≈1.1 keV were determined by revealing partial ion currents based on the shifted Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution. Characteristics of fast ion outbursts depend on the focus position with respect to the target surface.

Laser generated plasmas from target normal sheath acceleration produce energetic ions from the rear side of the target due to the formation of a high directive electric field. Fast electrons are ejected from the rear side of the target and a successive Coulomb explosion is driven by the fast electrons generating a high electric field of double layer. The ion acceleration is mainly controlled by the laser intensity and by the square of the laser wavelength. Literature reports that at intensities of the order of 1018 W/cm2 and at wavelengths of about 1 µm the ion energy is of the order of 5 MeV/nucleon. The use of advanced targets realized with the aim to reduce the surface reflection, to increase the laser absorption coefficient and, with an optimal thickness, to increase the electric field of the double layer, permits to enhance the ion energy acceleration, so that the energy of 5.0 MeV per charge state can be reached at about 1016 W/cm2, as it will be presented and discussed.

A new kind of high power tunable microwave radiation source is studied theoretically and experimentally. Following the previous works presented by Dorranian et al. (2003, 2004) in this paper more details about the radiation is presented. The theory of the radiation is developed to calculate the radiation spatial distribution, and more discussion on radiation behavior and characteristics is done. In this radiation scheme, a part of large amplitude electrostatic plasma wake, generated by an intense laser pulse or a relativistic electron bunch, are converted to electromagnetic oscillations by applying a modest dc magnetic field perpendicular to the wake propagation direction. A direct one-dimensional (1D) analytic procedure for calculating the magnetized plasma wake equations is developed and the properties of the radiation are investigated theoretically. The effects of the ramp plasma-vacuum boundary in coupling the radiation from plasma to vacuum is noticed and solved by employing a gas jet flow to generate a sharp boundary. Wakefield is excited by TW-100 fs Ti:sapphire laser beam operating at 800 nm wavelength. The neutral density of gas jet flow is measured with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The frequency of the emitted radiation with the pulse width of 200 ps (detection limitation) is in the millimeter wave range. Radiation is polarized perpendicularly to the dc magnetic field lines and propagates in the forward direction and normal direction with respect to the laser pulse propagation direction, both perpendiculars to the direction of the applied magnetic field. Intensity of the radiation in different plasma densities and different magnetic field strengths has been observed.

Laser fusion requires very high energy/power output with high repetition rate over 10 Hz, which is very difficult with the current laser technologies. However, the recent research work on the phase controlling of the stimulated Brillouin scattering wave enables the realization of this kind of laser fusion driver. The recent progress of controlling the phase has been successfully demonstrated by the self-generated density modulation method proposed by one of the authors (Kong). Nevertheless, it showed a long-term fluctuation of the phase because of the long-term fluctuation of the density of the SBS medium due to the thermal fluctuation. This long-term thermal fluctuation is inevitable a fact in nature. The authors used a specially designed stabilizing system for the phase controlling system, which has the PZT control of the mirror for phase controlling SBS-PCM (the so-called feedback mirror). This system stabilizes the phase controlling system very well for more than 1 h. This technique will help the laser fusion driver to be realized sooner than expected. In addition, we propose a similar scheme to be applied to the ultra-fast pulse laser system, which must operate at high repetition rate for the laser fusion energy power plant.

In ignition targets designs, U or U based cocktail hohlraum are usually used because the Rosseland mean opacity of U is higher than for Au at the radiation temperature for ignition. However, it should be noted that the opacity of U is obviously lower than for Au when the radiation temperature falls into a low temperature region. Because the depth penetrated by radiation is only several micrometers under a 300eV drive, and also because there is a prepulse longer than 10 ns prepulse at temperatures lower than 170 eV in the radiation drive of ignition target designs. Therefore we propose an Au + U + Au sandwich hohlraum for ignition targets in this work. Compared to the cocktail, the sandwich not only remarkably simplifies the fabrication and uses less depleted U material, but also increases the albedo during the prepulse.
