This study describes phenotypic and genotypic variations in the planktonic copepod, Centropages typicus (Copepoda: Calanoida) that indicate differentiation between geographical samples. We found consistent differences in the morphology of the chela of the sexually modified fifth pereiopod (P5) of male C. typicus between samples from the Mediterranean, western North Atlantic and eastern North Atlantic. A 560 base pairs (bp) region of the C. typicus mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and a 462 bp fragment of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) tandem array were analysed to determine whether these morphological variations reflect population genetic differentiation. Mitochondrial haplotype diversity was found to be high with 100 unique COI haplotypes among 116 individuals. Analysis of mtCOI variation suggested differentiation between the Mediterranean and Atlantic populations but no separation was detected within the Atlantic. Intragenomic variation in the ITS array suggested genetic differentiation between samples from the western North Atlantic and those from the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean. Breeding experiments would be required to elucidate the extent of genetic isolation between C. typicus from the different population centres.

Larval survival during planktonic dispersal is crucial to the connectivity among benthic populations. Although predation has been suggested as an important cause of larval mortality, this process has rarely been quantified in the field. We measured the abundance of various larval species in the water column in St George’s Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 3 different occasions in summer (August 2008, July and August 2009), the period of high larval abundance in our region. We sampled four numerically dominant predators (scyphozoans: Cyanea capillata and Aurelia aurita; fishes: Gasterosteus aculeatus and Merluccius bilinearis) and lobster larvae near the water surface with a neuston net and other larval species in the water column (3 m depth) with a ring net. Larvae found in the gut contents of the predators included various species of gastropods, crustaceans and bivalves, and these were more abundant in the scyphozoans than the fishes. We attribute these differences to variation in predation method. For certain larval taxa, we found significant differences between the proportional abundance in the guts of C. capillata and in the water column, indicating prey selectivity. This study evaluates the potential impact of predation on larval survival and indicates that the presence of predators can cause changes in abundance and consequent taxonomic shifts in species dominance of larvae, influencing their successful subsequent recruitment to the benthos.

Histochemical methods for cholinesterase activities were applied to embryos and early larvae of the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincklis Lamarck (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Mytilidae) and demonstrated that the cerebral ganglia, which are generally accepted as the first differentiating ganglia, appear after two bilaterally symmetrical nerve rudiments have developed in a posterior position prior to the trochophore stage. They are intimately associated with non-nervous superficial cells in two structures which have features of sensory organs.

Soft tissue δ13C values were determined in vestimentiferan tube worms, alvinellid polychaetes and molluscs from Axial Seamount and Middle Valley, North-east Pacific. Inorganic carbon in mollusc shells and water samples was also analysed. In the vestimentiferan, Ridgeia piscesae, which lives in symbiosis with sulphur-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic bacteria, tissue samples from the Axial vents showed δ13C values from −11 to −16‰, whereas at Middle Valley, where venting occurs through sediments, the δ13C ranged from −16 to −26‰. The tissues of an associated polychaete, Paralvinella palmiformis, which feeds on free-living bacteria, had δ13C values in the range −21 to −26‰. The bivalve Calyptogena from Middle Valley was more depleted than Ridgeia and Paralvinella, −37‰, closer to the ratios found in chemolithoautotrophic symbioses in non-vent habitats. Considerable, but variable, depletion (−23 to −42‰) was found in small gastropods. Mollusc shells and diluted vent water differed little in δ13C compared to inorganic carbon in ambient deep sea-water.

In the present study, we evaluate the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on temporal fluctuations of Sargassum filipendula in a subtropical shore. Monthly algal samples, abiotic components, amphipod grazer density, and epiphyte biomass were obtained from a Sargassum bed in south-eastern Brazil. Density of S. filipendula fronds decreased during the sampling period, whereas dry mass was more constant, although with a noticeable reduction in the warmer months. Hypnea musciformis was the most frequent epiphyte on S. filipendula, occurring in all sampling periods, although with significant temporal variation. Sargassum filipendula density and dry mass were both influenced by epiphyte dry mass, temperature, and amphipod grazers. Sargassum filipendula biomass negatively influenced total epiphyte biomass, whereas H. musciformis biomass was positively influenced by phosphate, nitrite, and S. filipendula density and negatively influenced by S. filipendula dry mass and amphipod grazer abundance. Algal temporal fluctuations can be related to local abiotic and biotic factors, but the variation observed for S. filipendula and its epiphytes suggest that these factors have quite distinct effects for these algae.

The mating behaviour of the helmet crab, Telmessus cheiragonus, was observed in the laboratory to obtain information of its fishery management and seed production. Females always moulted before copulation and all moulting females copulated with their mates, while males performed precopulatory guarding before their mates moulted. The average duration of precopulatory guarding was 11.8±5.0 SD days. Sex ratios in experimental tanks did not influence the first guarding duration of male but diminished the female's guarded duration under female-biased treatment. Competition among males for females was observed; larger males appeared to have a competitive advantage. Males started copulation in 41.2±10.9 SD min after females moulted and the copulation lasted for 110.6±6.6 SD min. Postcopulatory guarding duration was 4.0±6.6 SD h. Small males tended not to guard and to copulate with females larger than themselves. Common features and differences in mating behaviour between T. cheiragonus and Erimacrus isenbeckii is discussed.

In a recent paper describing the distinguishing characters of British species of Ensis (Holme, 1951), it was concluded that three valid species occur in British waters: E. siliqua (L.), E. arcuatus (Jeffreys) and E. ensis (L.). This paper is an attempt to analyse the ecological factors controlling the distribution of these species, particular attention being paid to the effect of soil grade.

A re-investigation of fresh material makes it necessary to create the new genus Thalassodrilus for T. prostatus (Knollner). Careful adherence to generic and specific criteria as detailed leads to the recognition of nineteen brackish-water and marine Tubificidae, and some dubious entities are also listed.

Video recordings were made of the behaviour of hyperiid amphipods and other mid-water crustaceans in a tank lit from above with a dim VDU screen, and from behind with infra-red light. Computer-generated stimuli could be moved across the VDU screen. Amphipods swam at speeds up to 19 body lengths per second. Some (Brachyscelus, Phrosina) consistently swam inverted, rolling from side to side. Others (Platyscelus, Parapronoe) spent periods of time rotating in the water with the dorsal acute zone of the eye pointing upwards. Both behaviours are interpreted as forms of visual scanning. Different species were active at different light levels, Phronima preferring the dimmest illumination. Three kinds of visual behaviour were seen consistently. The animals dropped from the surface as a dark square passed above them; they tracked other individuals (Hyperiids) or, in the case of Euphausiids, the stimuli on thescreen above; and they occasionally swam towards each other and collided, apparently deliberately.

Despite global deterioration of coral reef health, not all reef-associated organisms are in decline. Bioeroding sponges are thought to be largely resistant to the factors that stress and kill corals, and are increasing in abundance on many reefs. However, there is a paucity of information on how environmental factors influence spatial variation in the distribution of these sponges, and how they might be affected by different stressors. We aimed to identify the factors that explained differences in bioeroding sponge abundance and assemblage composition, and to determine whether bioeroding sponges benefit from the same environmental conditions that can contribute towards coral mortality. Abundance surveys were conducted in the Wakatobi region of Indonesia on reefs characterized by different biotic and abiotic conditions. Bioeroding sponges occupied an average of 8.9% of available dead substrate and variation in abundance and assemblage composition was primarily attributed to differences in the availability of dead substrate. Our results imply that if dead substrate availability increases as a consequence of coral mortality, bioeroding sponge abundance is also likely to increase. However, bioeroding sponge abundance was lowest on a sedimented reef, despite abundant dead substrate. This suggests that not all forms of coral mortality will benefit all bioeroding sponge species, and sediment-degraded reefs are likely to be dominated by a few resilient bioeroding sponge species. Overall, we demonstrate the importance of understanding the drivers of bioeroding sponge abundance and assemblage composition in order to predict possible impacts of different stressors on reefs communities.

The population dynamics of Nereis diversicolor (Annelida: Polychaeta) was studied at Stiffkey salt-marshes (north Norfolk coast). Monthly sampling from August 1992 to July 1993, on the lower salt marsh gives a mean annual density of 392 ind m−2 and a biomass of 10·26 g m−2 DW. Cohort analysis was made using ‘Bhatta’ software, allowing the growth and production estimations of the four cohorts. The production was 17·91 g m−2, giving a P:B ratio of 1·8. Nereis diversicolor population has only one recruitment in July.

Thraustochytrids, the exclusively marine organisms of kingdom Stramenopila and a source of essential fatty acids in the marine milieu, possess an osmoheterotrophic mode of nutrition and are therefore affected by type and source of available organic matter and pollution. To study their response to heavy metal pollution, they were isolated from the brown alga Sargassum cinereum from the coastal waters of Dona Paula, Goa, India. A total of 22 isolates were obtained from two samples collected during February and March 2012. Based on their 18S rRNA gene sequencing, the majority of the isolates were identified as Thraustochytrium kinnei. The rest were identified to be Sicyoidochytrium minutum, Ulkenia visurgensis and species of Thraustochytrium and Aurantiochytrium. Six isolates were screened for various enzymatic activities. Characteristic and distinctive enzyme profile was obtained from isolates of different genera. All isolates were also screened for their tolerance to heavy metals. They showed good growth in the presence of Mn2+. The other metals that were tolerated by most of the isolates were in the order Ni2+ > Cr6+ > Zn2+. Seven isolates grew in the presence of Cu2+, and six in the presence of Cd2+. The isolates growing on metals showed vast differences from their normal morphology such as small colony size, shrunken cells etc. Scanning electron micrographs revealed holes or depressions in the cell wall in the presence of metals. On the whole, the isolates belonging to Ulkenia visurgensis and Aurantiochytrium sp. showed tolerance to more metals than Thraustochytrium kinnei. Cluster analysis showed no peculiar trend of metal tolerance to any particular genus as the characters were scattered in the clusters.

Fatty acids (FAs) composition of eight zooxanthellate soft corals, Sinularia leptoclados, S. flexibilis, S. aff. deformis, S. lochmodes, S. cf. muralis, S. densa, S. notanda and S. cruciata collected in Van Phong Bay (Vietnam) were studied to identify possible origin of unsaturated FAs. The main FAs were 14:0, 16:0, 7-Me-16:1n-10, 16:1n-7, 16:2n-7, 18:0, 18:1n-9, 18:4n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, 22:6n-3, 24:5n-6 and 24:6n-3. On the average, saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) contributed 35.6, 6.2 and 54.0% of total coral FAs, respectively. PUFAs of n-6 series predominated in all animals (n-6/n-3 > 1.6). The content of 20:4n-6 varied from 10.2 to 23.8%. The main n-3 PUFA was 18:4n-3 (on the average, 5.4%); the contribution of 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, typical PUFAs of marine organisms, was not more than 2.4 and 3.9%, respectively. In Sinularia, PUFAs were produced by endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) and the coral host tissue, or obtained with food. Zooxanthellae can be considered as the source of C16 PUFAs and 18:4n-3. The coral host synthesized 18:2n-7, 24:5n-6 and 24:6n-3 acids. The low content of 18:1n-7, saturated odd-chain FAs and saturated methyl-branched FAs indicated a negligible contribution of bacteria to total lipids of Sinularia. A comparison of the levels of diatom and dinoflagellate FA markers in coral and plankton lipids showed eukaryotic microalgae to play a secondary role in feeding of Sinularia. The high level of 20:4n-6 may be considered as an indicator of heterotrophic feeding of Sinularia.

The absorption of radioactive Cs from sea water in relation to K metabolism has been examined in the squat lobster Galathea squamifera. A general study has been made of the ability of Galathea to carry out osmotic and ionic regulation as a comparison with better known decapod crustaceans which have previously been used for radioactive Cs experiments.

Galathea appears to be a truly marine decapod in that it is probably unable to osmoregulate and the body surface is very permeable to water and to Cs and Kions. Despite this high permeability, Galathea is able to regulate K and radioactive Cs at blood plasma levels which are 1.3 and 1.1 times those of sea water. The Na and Cl concentrations in the plasma are not regulated and the Ca concentration is variable, but Mg and SO4 are maintained at concentrations below those of sea water. Urinary excretion does not assist in the conservation of K or radioactive Cs in the plasma but assists in removing Mg and SO4.

Among the parasites of the branchial chamber of the flatfishes of the Eastern North Atlantic, those belonging to the genus Acanthochondria (fam. Chondracanthidae, tribe Cyclopiformes) occupy a conspicuous place. Both their relatively large size and their abundance, render them easily noticeable even to a casual observer, in spite of the protective nature of their environment. It is a reflexion on the state of our knowledge of marine parasites that, not withstanding their accessibility, very little is known about the animals of this genus.

The genus Acanthochondria was erected by Oakley (Leigh-Sharpe and Oakley, 1927) for the chondracanthids, which until then were included in Chondracanthus Delaroche, 1811, and which differed from the other members of that genus in the absence of the cephalic barbs and the dorsal and ventral processes. They were also characteristic in their preference for the flatfish hosts.

An assemblage of shallow-water fish was sampled with a small beach seine over monthly 24-h periods between April 2000 and March 2001 at the sandy beach Duće Glava in the eastern Adriatic. Monthly sets of samples were divided into day and night catches to examine the stability of diel differences in assemblage structure over a 1-y period. A total of 61 species was caught, of which six were exclusively diurnal and 12 were nocturnal. According to abundance and biomass of individuals during day and night, the most abundant species were categorized into several groups. Ophidion rochei was exclusively nocturnal, while Nerophis ophidion and Echiichthys vipera were mostly nocturnal. Diplodus annularis and Mullus surmuletus were slightly nocturnal. Diplodus vulgaris, Pomatoschistus marmoratus and Atherina boyeri lacked a diel pattern. Sardina pilchardus, Lithognathus mormyrus, Atherina hepsetus, Sarpa salpa and Mullus surmuletus abundance peaked for a few months, probably related to timing of spawning and recruitment. At the assemblage level, the diel per cent similarity index indicates that there were major differences between the day and night assemblages in April, September, March, and August with respect to number of individuals and September, October, May and March with respect to biomass.

The variability in motion behaviour properties was investigated for three species of intertidal gastropods at the inter-specific, inter-individual and individual levels in the absence of abiotic and biotic cues. Interspecific differences in movement patterns were reminiscent of the optimal searching behaviours expected for Austrocochlea porcata, Nerita atramentosa and Bembicium melanostomum in their natural environment. Specifically, N. atramentosa, A. porcata and B. melanostomum respectively displayed extensive and intensive foraging strategies consistent with their feeding ecology. The related inter-individual variability within each species highlights the potential ability of species to adapt their movement patterns to new environmental conditions and to persist over long-term changes. Finally, the strong variability observed in the speed and turning angle of individuals of the three species and the resulting behavioural plasticity may be an adaptive strategy to optimize energy expenditure and to react to an environmental fluctuation. Specifically, it is suggested that the lack of significant differences in individual behavioural variability between the three species indicates that despite clear inter-specific differences in motion behaviour, at the individual level A. porcata, N. atramentosa and B. melanostomum have similar abilities to face environmental fluctuations. This work stresses that individual variability in the motion behaviour of intertidal gastropods constitutes a fundamental evolutionary advantage when facing heterogeneous environmental conditions.

In continuation of the three previous reports on the seasonal abundance of the pelagic young of teleostean fishes (Russell, 1930, 1935 and 1936) the corresponding data for the year 1936 can now be given. These are published in the same form as in the previous reports to which reference should be made. The dates on which the collections were taken are given in Table I and the monthly average catches for the young fish in Table II. No observations were available between October 12th and December 16th, but this does not materially affect comparison with other years because normally the young fish present at that time of year are very few in number

Hake belonging to the genus Merlucdus are large fish often growing to overa metre in length; they are predators, being well streamlined and armed with formidableteeth; they feed pelagically on smaller fish of their own and other species. Of the various species distributed round the ocean basins, the European Hake, M. merlucdus (L.), ranges from Lofoten on the coast of Norway, to Dakar on the African westcoast; it is found most plentifully along the edge of the continental shelf of Western Europe but also extends into the Mediterranean and North Sea, whilestragglers occasionally range as far as Iceland.

The influence of circulation on abundance patterns of larval fish was compared at different phases of the tide in the vicinity of an estuarine front in Corral Bay, Chile during austral spring. Greatest differences in water salinity were found across the frontal region on ebb tides. Because rainfall was low, density differences were primarily due to tidal intrusion of salt water. Larval density was relatively low during both sampling periods with Strangomera bentincki, Oodntesthes regia laticlavia, Gobiesox marmoratus and Hypsoblennius sordidus as the most abundant species. Total ichthyoplankton was always higher near the tidal front (Stations 2 and 3). Spatial distribution in relation to tidal phase showed different patterns for the most abundant fish larval species. Circulation and larval distribution revealed that the bay was a source of young fish larvae but older individuals could also be recruited in and retained there. Results show that the front could act as a physical boundary for larvae transported from offshore through specific mechanism of circulation related with the tidal regime.
