In a recent paper Kovács [1] studied join-continuous modular lattices which satisfy the following conditions: (i) every element is a join of finitely many join-irredicibles, and, (ii) the set of join-irreducibles satisfies the descending chain condition. He was able to prove that such a lattice must itself satisfy the descending chain condition. Interest was expressed in whether or not one could obtain the same result without the assumption of modularity and/or of join-continuity. In this paper we give an elementary proof of this result without the assumption of join- continuity (which of course must then follow as a consequence of the descending chain condition). In addition we give a suitable example to show that modularity may not be omitted in general.

Let E be a vector lattice in the sense of [2]. Two elements a, b in E are said to be disjoint (written a⊥b) if ′a′^′b′ = 0. For any subset A of E, A⊥ is the set If A is a one point set {a}, then we shall use a⊥ for {a}⊥. A⊥⊥ is denned by A⊥⊥ = {A⊥}⊥. A subset B of E is said to be a polar if it is of the form A⊥ for some subset A of E. It is well known [1] that the set of all polars of E ordered by inclusion forms a Boolean algebra. We shall denote this algebra by B, and M will mean the set of all maximal ideals of B. The following properties of polars will be used in the paper.

A group which is minimally generated by n generators and defined by n relations is said to have zero deficiency. The class of finite groups known to have zero deficiency is small, consisting of cyclic groups, certain metacyclic groups [4] and classes of groups given in [1], [2] and [3].

Throughout this paper, we will use the terminologies and notations as in [4]. Thus, UN denotes the open unit polydisc in the space CN of N complex variables, TN the distinguished boundary of UN and .

By an operation in equationally definable class of group we mean here the element of a free group in this class generated by set {x, y}.

An operation ω(x, y) is called fundamental in a class of groups K if for every group G ω K the operation xy−1 can be expressed in terms of ω.

Higman and Neumann raised in [1] the problem: Is there any binary operation other than xy-1, x-1y, yx-1, y-1x fundamental in the class of all groups?*

In his paper [1], Thron introduced a concept of lattice-equivalence of topological spaces. Let C(X) denote the lattice of all closed sets of a topological space X. Two topological spaces X and Y are said to be lattice-equivalent if there exists a lattice-isomorphism between C(X) and C(Y). It is clear that for any continuous function f: X → Y, the induced map ψf: C(Y) → C(X), defined by ψ(F)=f−1(F), is a lattice-homomorphism. Furthermore, if h: X→ Y is a homeomorphism then ψh: C(Y) → C(X) is a lattice-isomorphism. Thron proved among others that for TD-spaces X and Y, any lattice-isomorphism: C(Y) → C(X) can be induced by a homeomorphism f: X → Y in the above way.

In [5] James defined an nth order Perron integral, the Pn- ntegral, and developed its properties. His proofs are often indirect, using properties of the CkP-integrals of Burkill, [3]. In this paper a simpler definition of the Pn-integral is given — the original and not completely equivalent definition, was probably chosen as James considered this integral as a special case of one defined in terms of certain symmetric derivatives, [5], when end points of the interval of definition had naturally to be avoided. We then give direct proofs of the basic results, give a characterization of Pn-primitives, and connect the integral with certain work of Denjoy, [4].

This paper is a continuation of [2] and will use the terminology and notation introduced therein. Basically, we seek to investigate the structure of indexed lattices in which the set of lengths of the minimal indexing chains is bounded.

Let τ be any cardinal number. Edwin Hewitt [3] has defined a topological space (X, J) to be τ-maximal if δ(J) ≥ τ and δ(J') < τ whenever J' is a topology for X which is strictly stronger that J (Δ denotes dispersion character, the least cardinality of a nonempty open set). The notion of an ℵ0-maximal space was introduced independently by Katětov [4].

This paper is concerned with certain aspects of the theory and application of the probability generating functional (p.g.fl) of a point process on the real line. Interest in point processes has increased rapidly during the last decade and a number of different approaches to the subject have been expounded (see for example [6], [11], [15], [17], [20], [25], [27], [28]). It is hoped that the present development using the p.g.ff will calrify and unite some of these viewpoints and provide a useful tool for solution of particular problems.

Abstract. In a recent paper, Bechtell obtained detailed structure theorems for finite supersoluble groups with the property that every minimal supplement for a non-Frattini normal subgroup is a complement. We consider finite soluble groups with this property. The situation is rather different to the supersoluble case, and the information we obtain is not as complete, though for such groups with non-trivial Frattini subgroup, some of the results are analogous.

Results concerning classes of null sets have been obtained by various authors. See, for example, [3], [4], [6], [7]. This paper contains results concerning classes of null sets and the notion of a ‘small system’. The motivation for considering ‘small systems’ comes from a paper by Riečan (c.f. [2]).

All extreme lattice-coverings of n–space by spheres are known for n ≦ 4; see for example [3]. Only one class of extreme covering is known for large n, namely that corresponding to the quadratic form this was first shown to be extreme for all n ≧ 2 by Bleicher [2].

Lattices of congruences have been studied by many authors. Hall [4] has shown that the lattice of congruences on a semilattice satisfy a certain chain condition which is a natural extension to arbitrary lattices of the Jordan-Dedekind chain condition for finite lattices.

Let N denote the discrete space of all natural numbers. A space X is N-compact if it is homeomorphic with some closed subspace of a product of copies of N. In this paper, N-compact spaces are characterized as homeomorphs of inverse limit space of inverse systems of copies of subsets of N. Also, it is shown that a space X is N-compact if and only if the space (X) of all non-empty compact subsets of X with the finite topology is N-compact.

The main purpose of this paper is to prove that every automorphism of the semigroup of all Hadamard-differentiable mappings of a separable real Banach space into itself is inner. This generalizes the results of [7] which is a generalization of a result proved by Magill, Jr. [5].

Let H denote a set with three elements, and T3 the full transformation semigroup on X, i.e. T3 consists of the twenty-seven self maps of X under functional composition. A transformation semigroup (briefly a τ-semigroup) on three letters is an ordered pair (X, S), where S is any subsemigroup of T3.

In Theorem 1, we shall discuss some properties of semifinite measure, that is, the measure μ on a ring R of sets with the property that, for every E in R, μ(E) is equal to the least upper bound of μ(F) where F runs over sets such that F is in R (F ⊂ E) and μ(F) < ∞. Let σ(R) be the σ-ring generated by R. To prove Theorem 2 we shall use the uniqueness theorem in Luther's paper [2], which is stated as a lemma in this paper.
