We introduce what is meant by an AC-Gorenstein ring. It is a generalized notion of Gorenstein ring that is compatible with the Gorenstein AC-injective and Gorenstein AC-projective modules of Bravo–Gillespie–Hovey. It is also compatible with the notion of $n$-coherent rings introduced by Bravo–Perez. So a $0$-coherent AC-Gorenstein ring is precisely a usual Gorenstein ring in the sense of Iwanaga, while a $1$-coherent AC-Gorenstein ring is precisely a Ding–Chen ring. We show that any AC-Gorenstein ring admits a stable module category that is compactly generated and is the homotopy category of two Quillen equivalent abelian model category structures. One is projective with cofibrant objects that are Gorenstein AC-projective modules while the other is an injective model structure with fibrant objects that are Gorenstein AC-injectives.

Let $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ be the Banach algebra of bounded holomorphic functions defined on the disjoint union of countably many copies of the open unit disk ${\mathbb {D}}\subset {{\mathbb C}}$ . We show that the dense stable rank of $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ is $1$ and, using this fact, prove some nonlinear Runge-type approximation theorems for $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ maps. Then we apply these results to obtain a priori uniform estimates of norms of approximating maps in similar approximation problems for the algebra $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}})$ .

The concept of very weak local uniform rotundity (very WLUR) is introduced. It is shown that if a Banach space E is WLUR, very WLUR, or LUR then its dual E* is smooth, very smooth, or Fréchet differentiable, respectively, on a norm dense subset. This leads to examples of nonreflexive spaces which are Fréchet differentiable at every nonzero point of a (relatively) norm dense subset of the embedding of E** in the fourth dual. When E is reflexive, necessary and sufficient conditions for E and E* to be WLUR and LUR are given.

It is shown that every element of the complex contracted semigroup algebra of an inverse semigroup S = S0 has a Moore-Penrose inverse, with respect to the natural involution, if and only if S is locally finite. In particular, every element of a complex group algebra has such an inverse if and only if the group is locally finite.

Consider an m × n rectangular array whose m rows are permutations of 1, 2, …, n. Such an array will be called a constant-sum array if the sum of the elements in each column is the same (and equal to ½m (n+1)). An example of a 3×9 constant-sum array is In contrast to a Latin rectangle, elements in the same column of a constantsum array may be equal. In this paper we characterize the structure of finite inverse perfect semigroups and study congruences on those semigroups, in particular we study those semigroups that have modular lattice of congruences.

It is well known (e.g. Stone [1]) that the Stone-Weierstrass approximation theorem can be used to prove the completeness of various systems of orthogonal polynomials, e.g. Chebyshev polynomials. In this paper, Stone's theorem is used to prove a more general completeness theorem, which includes as special cases Plancherel's theorem, the corresponding theorem for Hankel transforms, the completeness of various polynomial systems, and certain expansions in Jacobian elliptic functions. The essential feature common to all these systems is a certain algebraic structure — if S is an appropriate vector space spanned by orthogonal functions, then the algebra A generated by S is contained in the closure of S in a suitable norm.

I can indicate the type of refinement mentioned in the title by referring to Kirchberger's theorem [4]. Its picturesque form in the plane is: if sheep and goats are grazing in a field and for every four animals there exists a line separating the sheep from the goats then there exists such a line for all the animals. The refinement is that the words ‘every four animals’ may be replaced by ‘every four animals including an arbitraily chosen animal’; this reduces the ‘Kirchberger number’ from four to, effectively, three.

Rosen gave a determinant formula for relative class numbers for cyclotomic function fields, which may be regarded as an analogue of the classical Maillet determinant. In this paper, we give a determinant formula for relative congruence zeta functions for cyclotomic function fields. Our formula may be regarded as a generalization of the determinant formula for the relative class number.

We provide a simple and direct proof of the completeness of the L1-space of any vector measure taking its values in the class of Fréchet spaces which do not contain a copy of the sequence space ω.

We give a graph-theoretic definition for the number of ends of Cayley digraphs for finitely generated semigroups and monoids. For semigroups and monoids, left Cayley digraphs can be very different from right Cayley digraphs. In either case, the number of ends for the Cayley digraph does not depend upon which finite set of generators is used for the semigroup or monoid. For natural numbers m and n, we exhibit finitely generated monoids for which the left Cayley digraphs have m ends while the right Cayley digraphs have n ends. For direct products and for many other semidirect products of a pair of finitely generated infinite monoids, the right Cayley digraph of the semidirect product has only one end. A finitely generated subsemigroup of a free semigroup has either one end or else has infinitely many ends.

To each filter ℱ on ω, a certain linear subalgebra A(ℱ) of Rω, the countable product of lines, is assigned. This algebra is shown to have many interesting topological properties, depending on the properties of the filter ℱ. For example, if ℱ is a free ultrafilter, then A(ℱ) is a Baire subalgebra of ℱω for which the game OF introduced by Tkachenko is undetermined (this resolves a problem of Hernández, Robbie and Tkachenko); and if ℱ1 and ℱ2 are two free filters on ω that are not near coherent (such filters exist under Martin's Axiom), then A (ℱ1) and A(ℱ2) are two o-bounded and OF-undetermined subalgebras of ℱω whose product A(ℱ1) × A(ℱ2) is OF-determined and not o-bounded (this resolves a problem of Tkachenko). It is also shown that the statement that the product of two o-bounded subrings of ℱω is o-bounded is equivalent to the set-theoretic principle NCF (Near Coherence of Filters); this suggests that Tkachenko's question on the productivity of the class of o-bounded topological groups may be undecidable in ZFC.

nHr denotes the number of n × n matrices with non-negative integral entries, with row-sums and column-sums all equal to r. Kenji Mano [3] investigated the number nHr in which n distinct objects each replicated r times can be distributed in equal numbers among n cells. He gives an intricate formula for the case r = 2. Recently, Anand et al. [1], making use of partitions, extended it to 3Hr and stated a plausible formula for nHr.

A Banach space is an Asplund space if every continuous convex function on an open convex subset is Fréchet differentiable on a dense G8 subset of its domain. The recent research on the Radon-Nikodým property in Banach spaces has revealed that a Banach space is an Asplund space if and only if every separable subspace has separable dual. It would appear that there is a case for providing a more direct proof of this characterisation.

Given polynomials a and b over an integral domain R, their tensor product (denoted a ⊗ b) is a polynomial over R of degree deg(a) deg(b) whose roots comprise all products αβ, where α is a root of a, and β is a root of b. This paper considers basic properties of ⊗ including how to factor a ⊗ b into irreducibles factors, and the direct sum decomposition of the ⊗-product of fields.

Best-possible results are established for positivity of the partial sums of Σ sin k θ (k + α)−1. In fact odd sums are positive for −1 ≤ α ≤ α0 = 2.1 …, while 2k terms are positive on the subinterval ]0, π − 2μ0π(4k +1)−1 [, μ0 = 0.8128 …. This is analagous to the Gasper extension of the Szegö-Rogosinski-Young inequality for cosine sums.

We show that every orbital measure, ${\mu }_{x} $, on a compact exceptional Lie group or algebra has the property that for every positive integer either ${ \mu }_{x}^{k} \in {L}^{2} $ and the support of ${ \mu }_{x}^{k} $ has non-empty interior, or ${ \mu }_{x}^{k} $ is singular to Haar measure and the support of ${ \mu }_{x}^{k} $ has Haar measure zero. We also determine the index $k$ where the change occurs; it depends on properties of the set of annihilating roots of $x$. This result was previously established for the classical Lie groups and algebras. To prove this dichotomy result we combinatorially characterize the subroot systems that are kernels of certain homomorphisms.

Výborný and I (1972) proved maximum principles for a quasilinear elliptic operator where the boundary satisfied a smoothness condition weaker than the interior sphere property. In this paper I extend these to parabolic operators of a similar form and through a simple device to weakly coupled systems of such operators. Finally, I extend all of these results to an operator similar to the “parabolic” case of an operator introduced by Redheffer (1971). His conditions on the coefficients are replaced by conditions analogous to those Dow and Výborný (1972).

One way of realizing representations of the Heisenberg group is by using Fock representations, whose representation spaces are Hilbert spaces of functions on complex vector space with inner products associated to points on a Siegel upper half space. We generalize such Fock representations using inner products associated to points on a Hermitian symmetric domain that is mapped into a Seigel upper half space by an equivariant holomorphic map. The representations of the Heisenberg group are then given by an automorphy factor associated to a Kuga fiber variety. We introduce theta functions associated to an equivariant holomorphic map and study connections between such generalized theta functions and Fock representations described above. Furthermore, we discuss Jacobi forms on Hermitian symmetric domains in connection with twisted torus bundles over symmetric spaces.
