A group is called an s-group if it is locally finite and all its Sylow subgroups are abelian. Kovács [4] has shown that, for any positive integer e, the class se of all s-groups of exponent dividing e is a (locally finite) variety. The proof of this relies on the fact that, for any e, there are only finitely many (isomorphism classes of) non-abelian finite simple groups in se; and this is a consequence of deep results of Walter and others (see [6]). In [2], Christensen raised the finite basis question for the laws of the varieties se. It is easy to establish the finite basis property for an se which contains no non-abelian finite simple group; and Christensen gave a finite basis for the laws of the variety s30, whose only non-abelian finite simple group is PSL(2,5). Here we prove Theorem For any positive integer e, the varietysehas a finite basis for its laws.

Given an integer n≥2, let λ(n):=(log n)/(log γ(n)), where γ(n)=∏ p∣np, denote the index of composition of n, with λ(1)=1. Letting ϕ and σ stand for the Euler function and the sum of divisors function, we show that both λ(ϕ(n)) and λ(σ(n)) have normal order 1 and mean value 1. Given an arbitrary integer k≥2, we then study the size of min {λ(ϕ(n)),λ(ϕ(n+1)),…,λ(ϕ(n+k−1))} and of min {λ(σ(n)),λ(σ(n+1)),…,λ(σ(n+k−1))} as n becomes large.

Using the elements of order four in the narrow ideal class group, we construct generators of the maximal elementary $2$-class group of real quadratic number fields with even discriminant which is a sum of two squares and with fundamental unit of positive norm. We then give a characterization of when two of these generators are equal in the narrow sense in terms of norms of Gaussian integers.

This paper gives non-embeddings and non-immersions for the real flag manifolds RF(1, 1, n–2), n > 3 and shows that Lam's immersions for n = 4 and 5 and Stong's result for n = 6 are the best possible.

Several finite complex reflection groups have a braid group that is isomorphic to a torus knot group. The reflection group is obtained from the torus knot group by declaring meridians to have order k for some $k\geq 2$, and meridians are mapped to reflections. We study all possible quotients of torus knot groups obtained by requiring meridians to have finite order. Using the theory of J-groups of Achar and Aubert [‘On rank 2 complex reflection groups’, Comm. Algebra 36(6) (2008), 2092–2132], we show that these groups behave like (in general, infinite) complex reflection groups of rank two. The large family of ‘toric reflection groups’ that we obtain includes, among others, all finite complex reflection groups of rank two with a single conjugacy class of reflecting hyperplanes, as well as Coxeter’s truncations of the $3$-strand braid group. We classify these toric reflection groups and explain why the corresponding torus knot group can be naturally considered as its braid group. In particular, this yields a new infinite family of reflection-like groups admitting braid groups that are Garside groups. Moreover, we show that a toric reflection group has cyclic center by showing that the quotient by the center is isomorphic to the alternating subgroup of a Coxeter group of rank three. To this end we use the fact that the center of the alternating subgroup of an irreducible, infinite Coxeter group of rank at least three is trivial. Several ingredients of the proofs are purely Coxeter-theoretic, and might be of independent interest.

For a non-constant entire or rational function f normalized by f(0) = 0, f′(0) = 1, f″(0) ≠ 0, which is not a Möbius tranformation, the existence of a sequence is established which has the properties . The result certainly implies f(0)= |f(0)|= 1, so these conditions cannot be omitted. The condition f″ (0)≠ 0 can be replaced by f(k)(0) ≠ 0 for some k ≥ 2.

According to the classical Borel lemma, any positive nondecreasing continuous function T satisfiesT(r+1/T(r))≤2T(r) outside a possible exceptional set of finite linear measure. This lemma plays an important role in the theory of entire and meromorphic functions, where the increasing function T is either the logarithm of the maximum modulus function, or the Nevanlinna characteristic. As a result, exceptional sets appear throughout Nevanlinna theory, in particular in Nevanlinna’s second main theorem. In this paper, we consider generalizations of Borel’s lemma. Conversely, we consider ways in which certain inequalities can be modified so as to remove exceptional sets. All results discussed are presented from the point of view of real analysis.

In this note, we use a geometric construction to produce group divisible designs with mutually orhogonal resolutions.

Groups with the property of the title were considered by Chillag (1977); this paper completes his results by showing that, with known exceptions, they are triply transitive.

We analyze the automorphism group for the norm closed quiver algebras 𝒯+(Q). We begin by focusing on two normal subgroups of the automorphism group which are characterized by their actions on the maximal ideal space of 𝒯+(Q). To further discuss arbitrary automorphisms we factor automorphism through subalgebras for which the automorphism group can be better understood. This allows us to classify a large number of noninner automorphisms. We suggest a candidate for the group of inner automorphisms.

We consider the influence on a group G of the condition that every infinite set of cyclic subgroups of G contains a pair that permute and prove (Theorem 1) that finitely generated soluble groups with this condition are centre-by-finite, and (Theorem 2) that torsion free groups satisfying the condition are abelian.

We record $\binom{42}{2}+\binom{23}{2}+\binom{13}{2}=1192$ functional identities that, apart from being amazingly amusing in themselves, find application in the derivation of Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and in the computation of mathematical constants.

In this paper, we prove a one level density result for the low-lying zeros of quadratic Hecke L-functions of imaginary quadratic number fields of class number 1. As a corollary, we deduce, essentially, that at least $(19-\cot (1/4))/16 = 94.27\ldots \%$ of the L-functions under consideration do not vanish at 1/2.

Let {Xn} be a sequence fo independent and identically distributed random variables such that 0 <μ = εXn ≦ + ∞ and write Sn = X1+X2+ … +Xn. Letv ≧ 0 be an integer and let M(x) be a non-decreasing function of x ≧ 0 such that M(x)/x is non-increasing and M(0) > 0. Then if ε|X1νM(|X1|) < ∞ and μ < ∞ it follows that ε|Sn|νM(|Sn|) ~ (nμ)vM(nμ) as n → ∞. If μ = ∞ (ν = 0) then εM(|Sn|) = 0(n). A variety of results stem from this main theorem (Theorem 2), concerning a closure property of probability generating functions and a random walk result (Theorem 1) connected with queues.

Congruence-free right simple semigroups with idempotents are simple groups or have order 2. It is shown in this paper that there exist congruence-free simple semigroups without idempotents. Some properties of congruences on right simple semigroups, expressed mainly in terms of their unitary and left unitary subsemigroups, are determined. These are used to provide characterizations of congruence-free right simple semigroups.

Most known homology theories (e.g. the homology of modules, rings, groups, sheaves, …) have been found to be special cases of a general theory proposed by M. Barr and J. Beck [1], [2]. The aim of this paper is to show that the cohomology of a local group, as defined by W. T. van Est [4], also fits the scheme of Barr and Beck. At the same time it will be shown that local group cohomology is a relative derived functor in the sense of S. Eilenberg and J. C. Moore [3].

We show that for manifolds of dimension $m\geq 5$, the flow of a Seiberg–Witten-type functional admits a global smooth solution.

A Σ-group is an abelian group on which is given a family of infinite sums having properties suggested by, but weaker than, those which hold for absolutely convergent series of real or complex numbers. Two closely related questions are considered. The first concerns the construction of a Σ-group from an arbitrary abelian group on which certain series are given to be summable, certain of these series being required to sum to zero. This leads to a Σ-theoretic construction of R from Q and in general of the completion of an arbitrary metrizable abelian group (with the associated unconditional sums) from that group. The second question is whether, in a given Σ-group, the values of the infinite sums may be determined solely from a knowledge of which series are summable. Such a Σ-group is said to be relatively free and it is shown that all metrizable abelian groups are relatively free.

The purpose of this paper is an extension of a theorem of Hughes (1973). He showed: Let R be a ring which has a right artinian right quotient ring and let G be a group which has a (transfinite) ascending normal series with each factor either finite or cyclic, but only a finite number of finite factors. Then the group ring RG has a right artinian right quotient ring.

A group G belongs to the class W if G has non-nilpotent proper subgroups and is isomorphic to all of them. The main objects of study are the soluble groups in W that are not finitely generated. It is proved that there are no torsion-free groups of this sort, and a reasonable classification is given in the finite rank case.
