We prove that if holds for a singular cardinal μ, then any collection of fewer than cf(μ) stationary subsets of μ+ must reflect simultaneously.

We show that given ω many supercompact cardinals, there is a generic extension in which there are no Aronszajn trees at ℵω+1· This is an improvement of the large cardinal assumptions. The previous hypothesis was a huge cardinal and ω many supercompact cardinals above it, in Magidor–Shelah [7].

We prove that:

1. • if there is a model of IΔ0 + ¬exp with cofinal Σ1-definable elements and a Σ1 truth definition for Σ1 sentences, then IΔ0 + ¬exp + ¬BΣ1 is consistent,

2. • there is a model of IΔ0 + Ω1 + ¬exp with cofinal Σ1-definable elements, both a Σ2 and a Π2 truth definition for Σ1 sentences, and for each n ≥ 2, a Σn truth definition for Σn sentences.

The latter result is obtained by constructing a model with a recursive truth-preserving translation of Σ1 sentences into boolean combinations of sentences.

We also present an old but previously unpublished proof of the consistency of IΔ0 + ¬exp + ¬BΣ1 under the assumption that the size parameter in Lessan's Δ0 universal formula is optimal. We then discuss a possible reason why proving the consistency of IΔ0 + ¬exp + ¬BΣ1 unconditionally has turned out to be so difficult.

We present sharpened lower bounds on the size of cut free proofs for first-order logic. Prior lower bounds for eliminating cuts from a proof established superexponential lower bounds as a stack of exponentials, with the height of the stack proportional to the maximum depth d of the formulas in the original proof. Our results remove the constant of proportionality, giving an exponential stack of height equal to d − O(1). The proof method is based on more efficiently expressing the Gentzen–Solovay cut formulas as low depth formulas.

The truth-table degree of the set of shortest programs remains an outstanding problem in recursion theory. We examine two related sets, the set of shortest descriptions and the set of domain-random strings, and show that the truth-table degrees of these sets depend on the underlying acceptable numbering. We achieve some additional properties for the truth-table incomplete versions of these sets, namely retraceability and approximability. We give priority-free constructions of bounded truth-table chains and bounded truth-table antichains inside the truth-table complete degree by identifying an acceptable set of domain-random strings within each degree.

We consider the following problem: Given a proof of the Skolemization of a formula F, what is the length of the shortest proof of F? For the restriction of this question to cut-free proofs we prove corresponding exponential upper and lower bounds.

Dynamic Topological Logic is a modal framework for reasoning about dynamical systems, that is, pairs 〈X, f〉 where X is a topological space and f: X → X a continuous function.

In this paper we consider the case where X is a metric space. We first show that any formula which can be satisfied on an arbitrary dynamic topological system can be satisfied on one based on a metric space; in fact, this space can be taken to be countable and have no isolated points. Since any metric space with these properties is homeomorphic to the set of rational numbers, it follows that any satisfiable formula can be satisfied on a system based on ℚ.

We then show that the situation changes when considering complete metric spaces, by exhibiting a formula which is not valid in general but is valid on the class of systems based on a complete metric space. While we do not attempt to give a full characterization of the set of valid formulas on this class we do give a relative completeness result; any formula which is satisfiable on a dynamical system based on a complete metric space is also satisfied on one based on the Cantor space.

We prove that in the Polish group of isometries of the Baire space the collection of n-th powers is non-Borel. We also prove that in the Polish space of trees on ℕ the collection of trees that have an automorphism under which every node has order exactly n is non-Borel.

We propose a probabilistic interpretation of Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL). We show that logical and behavioral equivalence are equivalent over general measurable spaces. This is done first for the fragment of straight line programs and then extended to cater for the nondeterministic nature of choice and iteration, expanded to PDL as a whole. Bisimilarity is also discussed and shown to be equivalent to logical and behavioral equivalence, provided the base spaces are Polish spaces. We adapt techniques from coalgebraic stochastic logic and point out some connections to Souslin's operation from descriptive set theory. This leads to a discussion of complete stochastic Kripke models and model completion, which permits an adequate treatment of the test operator.

We investigate the isomorphism types of combinatorial geometries arising from Hrushovski's flat strongly minimal structures and answer some questions from Hrushovski's original paper.

We address the following question: Can we expand an NIP theory by adding a linear order such that the expansion is still NIP? Easily, if acl(A)=A for all A, then this is true. Otherwise, we give counterexamples. More precisely, there is a totally categorical theory for which every expansion by a linear order has IP. There is also an ω-stable NDOP theory for which every expansion by a linear order interprets pseudofinite arithmetic.

We consider ωn-automatic structures which are relational structures whose domain and relations are accepted by automata reading ordinal words of length ωn for some integer n ≥ 1. We show that all these structures are ω-tree-automatic structures presentable by Muller or Rabin tree automata. We prove that the isomorphism relation for ω2-automatic (resp. ωn-automatic for n > 2) boolean algebras (respectively, partial orders, rings, commutative rings, non commutative rings, non commutative groups) is not determined by the axiomatic system ZFC. We infer from the proof of the above result that the isomorphism problem for ωn-automatic boolean algebras, n ≥ 2, (respectively, rings, commutative rings, non commutative rings, non commutative groups) is neither a -set nor a -set. We obtain that there exist infinitely many ωn-automatic, hence also ω-tree-automatic, atomless boolean algebras , which are pairwise isomorphic under the continuum hypothesis CH and pairwise non isomorphic under an alternate axiom AT, strengthening a result of [14].
