Having recently succeeded in synthesizing large single crystals of (Ca2CoO3)CoO2 (Co-349) with superior thermoelectric properties using a modified flux method, we have prepared a composite material of Co-349 powder and single crystals and examined its thermoelectric properties. The electrical conductivity σ of this composite, which contained 20 wt.% single crystals, was higher than that of a sample without the single crystals. While the achievable effect has yet to be fully realized, improved grain alignment and the effect of current bypassing grain boundaries through the large single crystals in the composite are thought to cause the increasing σ, which consequently results in an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit of about 0.56 at 973 K in air.

Bulk glassy Zr55Al20–xCo25Nbx (x = 0 to 5 at.%) alloys with critical diameters of 2.5–5 mm and supercooled liquid region of 48–75 K were produced by copper-mold casting. These alloys were spontaneously passivated in 3 mass% NaCl and 1 N H2SO4 solutions. The addition of Nb to the alloy enhanced the pitting corrosion resistance in the NaCl solution and enabled the open-circuit potential in the H2SO4 solution. Zr- and Al-enriched passive films formed on the bulk glassy Zr–Al–Co–Nb alloys exposed to air and on those immersed in the solutions. The increase in Nb content of the alloys resulted in an increase in Zr and Nb concentrations and a decrease in Al concentration of the passive film. The Vickers hardness, Young's modulus, compressive fracture strength, fracture strain, and plastic strain of the bulk glassy Zr–Al–Co–Nb alloys were 550, 98 GPa, 2100 MPa, 2.9%, and 0.9%, respectively.

Several chemical–mechanical planarization characterization test wafers were polished to understand the polishing mechanism of the fixed abrasive process. Oxide thickness removal in the “active” (up) and the “recessed” (down) regions of the wafer was monitored for different times of polish. It was found that there was no significant removal in the recessed areas until the step height was reduced to about 100 Å, and the polish rate in the active area decreased rapidly once this critical step height had been attained. At this critical step height, the polish rate of the down areas started to increase and approached that of the up area, with both eventually reaching the negligibly low removal rate of the blanket wafer. The drop in the polish rate of the up area, after planarity had been attained, was fitted to an exponential model.

Nucleation can play an important role during the formation of silicides, especially when the difference in Gibbs free energy ΔG between the existing and newly formed phase is small. In this work, it is shown that the addition of elements that form a solid solution with either the existing or nucleating phase influences the entropy of mixing and thus changes ΔG. In this way, the height of the nucleation barrier may be controlled, thus controlling the nucleation temperature. The influence of mixing entropy on silicide nucleation is illustrated by experiments for two ternary systems: Co–Mn–Si and Ni–Pd–Si. It is shown that the nucleation temperature of CoSi2 is increased by the addition of Mn, the nucleation temperature of MnSi1.7 is increased by the presence of Co, the nucleation temperature of NiSi2 is increased by the addition of Pd, and the nucleation temperature of PdSi is decreased by the addition of Ni. In all four cases, the effect of the alloying element on the nucleation temperature can be explained by a model on the basis of the concept of mixing entropy.

A nanocrystalline KNbO3 particle/polymer hybrid was synthesized through controlled hydrolysis and polymerization of metalorganics below 100 °C. A KNbO3 precursor was synthesized from potassium ethoxide, niobium ethoxide, and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. The K–Nb alkoxide precursor was hydrolyzed and polymerized yielding KNbO3 particle/polymer hybrid. The organic matrix included nanometer-sized crystalline particles depending upon the hydrolysis conditions. The nanocrystalline particles were identified to be potassium niobate by electron diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The suspension of the hybrid in silicone oil revealed a yield stress dependent upon various conditions, such as concentration and applied field. The hybridization was found to have a pronounced effect on the electrorheological properties of the fluid, including the KNbO3 particle/polymer hybrid.

A new method was found to synthesize large-area (7 × 15 mm2), high-density (higher than 109 cm−2), aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with uniform diameters on a silica wafer. Ferrocene/melamine mixtures were pyrolyzed through a three-step process in an Ar atmosphere in a single-stage furnace. The structure and composition of the CNTs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). It was found that these nanotubes have uniform outer diameters of about 22 nm and varying lengths from 10 to 40 μm. High-resolution TEM images showed that CNT is composed of graphite-like layers arranged in a stacked-cup-like structure. XPS results showed that the layer covering the tops of the aligned CNTs consists of carbon and iron. The EELS spectrum showed that these tubes are pure carbon.

Self-organized structures of the sodium salt of sulfonated polyaniline (prepared from the leucoemeraldine base of polyaniline) in the presence of a mixture of cationic and nonionic surfactants were studied. It was used in the latex form, which has been prepared using a conventional method with sodium dodecyl sulfate. The cationic surfactant used was didodecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide, and the nonionic surfactant used was Triton-X-100. The supramolecular organization was made in aqueous medium by varying the concentrations of the components. A three-dimensional fibrillar network and colloidal aggregate were produced due to the supramolecular organization. The thermal study indicated reversible first-order phase transition in the former cases fulfilling the criteria of thermoreversible gels. A probable explanation of the different morphology from the variation of charge density on the vesicle surface has been offered. The conductivity of fibrillar network is two orders higher than that of the colloidal aggregate.

(La, Sr)(Al, Ta)O3 (LSAT) has recently received increased attention as a substrate for the deposition of various oxide films. LSAT is usually considered as having a perovskite structure. However, the exact atomic structure of LSAT is not yet well known and has received little attention up to now. In this paper, a series of studies using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry were conducted to determine the atomic structure of LSAT. It was found that LSAT consists of two types of domains: one with a simple cubic perovskite structure (disordered with a = 0.3868 nm) and the other with a face-centered-cubic structure (ordered with a = 0.773 nm). Computer image simulation of high-resolution lattice images suggests that the ordered structure is due to ordering of the Al and Ta ions.

Following the finite element simulations in our earlier work about the contact deformation regimes, mathematical formulations were derived to correlate hardness and the amount of pileup and sinking-in phenomena around sharp indenters with uniaxial mechanical properties. The formulations are applicable regardless of the deformation regime ruling the contact response of a strain-hardening solid. A methodology was devised where the use of these formulations in mechanical property assessments from indentation experiments was demonstrated. The current results make contact with existing methodologies using the II-theorem in functional analysis to extract uniaxial properties from instrumented indentation load depth of penetration curves. It is argued that since surface deformation is an essential feature of the contact response, it enters directly or indirectly in such existing methodologies. The paper considers how independent knowledge of surface deformation can be used to guide mechanical property assessments from load-depth of penetration curves. A discussion on the uniqueness of mechanical characterizations through indentation experiments is also provided.

A Au colloid was prepared in a 5 mM HAuCl4 solution through irradiation with a focused infrared femtosecond laser at 800 nm. The Au colloid was characterized by absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction analysis. The appearance of absorption peak around 526 nm in the absorption spectra and the wine-red color of sample solution HAuCl4 under focused laser irradiation verified the formation of Au colloid. The solution color changed in the order of yellow → orange → wine-red due to the local formation of Au nanoparticles near the focus. The pulse energy, focus position of laser beam, and solvent composite play important roles in formation, grain size, and stability of the Au colloid. A mechanism for the precipitate of Au nanoparticles was proposed, and a multiphoton process of femtosecond laser was involved.

In this study, crystals of Y2SiO5 were examined by high-temperature powder x-ray diffractometry to determine the changes in unit-cell dimensions with temperatures up to 1273 K for the X1 phase (the low-temperature phase, space group P121/c1) and 1473 K for the X2 phase (the high-temperature phase, space group I12/a1). The lattice deformations of both phases induced by thermal expansion were investigated by matrix algebra analysis to determine the directions and magnitudes of the principal distortions (λi, i = 1, 2, and 3). For the X1 phase, λ1 and λ2 invariably showed a positive thermal expansion. On the other hand, λ3 showed a negative thermal expansion below 1173 K; the maximum contraction of 0.10(4)% occurred at 685 K. The λ2 axis invariably coincides with the crystallographic b axis. The directions of λ1 and λ3, defined by the acute angle λ3 ^ c changed between 53(3)° (T = 394 K) and 45(1)° (T = 788 K). For the X2 phase, all of the principal distortions steadily increased with increasing temperature. The angle λ3 ^ c steadily decreased from 71(2)° to 62.1(1)° with increasing temperature. The mean linear thermal expansion coefficients were, when compared at the same temperatures, necessarily higher for the X1 phase than for the X2 phase. The lattice change of X1–RE2SiO5 (RE = Y and Yb–La), which was induced by the substitution of rare-earth (RE) ions, showed a striking resemblance with the lattice deformation of X1-Y2SiO5, which was caused by the thermal expansion. Because the lattice change of the former must be caused by the isotropic expansion of the RE sites, the anisotropic thermal expansion of the latter would be essentially attributable to the isotropic thermal expansion of the YO9 and YO7 polyhedron.

The microstructural changes associated with the reduced dependence of critical current density (Jc) versus thickness of thick, epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7–δ (YBCO) films on rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS) were investigated. Pulsed laser deposited YBCO films varying in thickness from 1.0 to 6.4 ?m on RABiTS with an architecture of Ni–3 at.% W/Y2O3/yttrium-stabilized-zirconia/CeO2/YBCO were prepared for cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy studies. Dramatic improvements in physical properties and microstructural quality were observed resulting from the use of Ni–3 at.% W substrates, which provided a sharper texture over earlier Ni substrates, and replacement of CeO2 with Y2O3 as the seed layer within the buffers. The YBCO films showed exceptional orientation up to 6.4 μm thickness, with no misoriented grains or dead layers observed and only limited reaction between the YBCO and CeO2 cap layer. The high quality of the films was also attributed in part to the formation of a tungsten oxide layer forming at the top of the Ni–3% W substrate, limiting the growth of deleterious NiO into the conductor.
