The trematodes from South American reptiles are poorly known, with only one life cycle completely characterized. We used molecular and morphological methods to characterize diplostomoid metacercariae found in 29 of 86 pointedbelly frogs, Leptodactylus podicipinus (Cope, 1862) collected in a marsh pond in Selvíria, in the central-west region of Brazil. The metacercariae were identified as Heterodiplostomum lanceolatum Dubois, 1936 (Proterodiplostomidae), a rarely reported species that matures in snakes. In phylogenetic analysis of partial sequences from 28S rDNA, H. lanceolatum fell within a polytomy with the proterodiplostomid Crocodilicola pseudostoma (molecular divergence of 4.1%) and other members of the superfamily Diplostomoidea. Our collections provide insights into the ecology of this parasite, in that infected frogs were smaller than uninfected frogs, and metacercariae were more numerous in the abdominal cavity and hindlimb muscles than in abdominal muscles, which suggests directions for future research on the transmission and pathology of this proterodiplostomid.

Adult Galba truncatula ( ≥ 4 mm in shell height) were collected from 135 habitats for 3 years (2012–2014) to identify parasite species via the study of cercariae, and to determine the prevalence of each digenean infection in relation to the type of snail habitat (six types). A total of 323 infected snails and ten digenean species were noted in the bodies of 11,025 G. truncatula after their dissection. Snails with Calicophoron daubneyi and/or Fasciola hepatica were found in 20.7% and 12.5% of the habitats, respectively, and most of these infected snails were collected from rainwater-draining furrows and pools in meadows. The percentages were lower for snails with Echinostoma revolutum (9.6% of habitats) and Haplometra cylindracea (7.4%), and were less than 5% for those parasitized by any of the other five species of digenean. The highest prevalence of all digenean infections was noted in pools (9.4%), followed by furrows located in meadows (8.3%) and ponds (5.1%). The prevalence noted for each digenean infection varied with the type of habitat. In furrows located in meadows, the infection rate of C. daubneyi in snails (3.5%) was significantly higher than that of F. hepatica (2.2%). In pools, values greater than 1.5% were noted for C. daubneyi, H. cylindracea and Opistoglyphe ranae. In ponds, E. revolutum was the dominant species (prevalence, 2.5%). Parasite species richness in G. truncatula was greater in the Brenne Natural Regional Park than in the nearby region of Limousin (ten instead of eight). The distribution and prevalence of each parasite species were dependent on the type and location of each snail habitat.

Notocotylus tadornae n.sp. is described from the New Zealand paradise shelduck Tadorna variegata (Gmelin), and Notocotylus gippyensis (Beverley-Burton, 1958), is recorded from three waterfowl species in New Zealand. The life histories of both species are shown to involve an hydrobiid snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, as intermediate host. The taxonomic affiliations of N. tadornae and N. gippyensis are discussed.

Effective treatment of mice with six to eight week-old patent S. mansoni infections with any one of five schistosomicidal agents (Oxamniquine, Praziquantel, potassium antimony tartrate, Niridazole and Hycanthone) resulted in a reduction in the degree of resistance to homologous challenge in the treated animals when compared with the level of resistance to reinfection observed in untreated mice with intact primary infections. Mice challenged five to six weeks after treatment with Praziquantel, Niridazole or Hycanthone demonstrated a lower level of resistance than mice challenged within 10 days of the termination of the chemotherapeutic schedules. Direct comparison of Praziquantel with potassium antimony tartrate indicated that treatment with the former drug allowed retention of a greater level of acquired resistance than the antimonial in the immediate post-treatment period. Resistance to reinfection in Hycanthone-treated mice was not restored by intravenous injection of S. mansoni eggs before challenge.

This paper reports the development of the canid filarial worm, Dipetalonema dracunculoides, in the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus by determining whether development is similar within larval, nymphal and adult stages of infected ticks. This study demonstrates that only infected nymphal ticks can support the complete development of the filarial worm. Infected larval ticks are not suitable intermediate hosts, nor are infected adults. Development depends on some stage-specific property of the vector, and the maturation to the infective stage is stimulated during the course of the nymphal-adult moult.

Two invasive fish species, the round goby Apollonia melanostoma syn. Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas 1814) and the bighead goby Neogobius kessleri (Günther, 1861), have established a firm population in Austrian waters during the past 15 years. As there have been no records of the parasite fauna from these populations, a total of 79 specimens of A. melanostoma and 12 specimens of N. kessleri were examined for parasites between May and October 2007 from three different sampling sites from the Danube River in Austria. In total 12 parasite taxa were recovered. The protozoans Trichodina sp. and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis from the gills and skin; two crustacean species, Paraergasilus brevidigitus and Ergasilus sieboldi, from the gills; and the two monogeneans Gyrodactylus sp. and Dactylogyrus sp., from the skin and gills respectively, all occurred at low prevalence and intensities. Furthermore, cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucii were found in the body cavity. Metacercariae of the digeneans Diplostomum sp. and Tylodelphys clavata were found in the lens of the eye and the vitreous humour, respectively. Adults of two digeneans, Nicolla skrjabini and Bunodera nodulosa, were found in the intestine. In addition, during this survey metacercariae of the Holarctic digenean Bucephalus polymorphus, encysted in the skin and fins, with prevalence up to 78%, were recorded for the first time in Austria.

There is an urgent need for information on schistosomiasis in preschool children, who are often excluded in mass treatment programmes. The prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infection were determined in preschool children aged ≤ 6 years in two rural communities in Ijebu East, south-western Nigeria. Two urine samples each were collected from 83 preschool children from the two communities, tested for microhaematuria using reagent strips and then processed and examined with a microscope for S. haematobium eggs. Focus group discussions on perceptions of the disease and water contact practices were held in the communities with their guardians, caregivers and preschool children, using an interview guide. The prevalence of S. haematobium in the two communities was 14 (16.9%), with no significant differences (P = 0.661) in infection rate between boys (18.4%) and girls (14.7%). Both prevalence and intensity of infection did not increase significantly with age in both Korede and Obada community. However, there were significant differences in prevalence of infection between the two communities (P = 0.035). There was no association (P = 0.750) between intensity in boys (0.176 eggs/10 ml urine) and girls (0.110 eggs/10 ml urine). Focal group discussions with guardians and caregivers revealed that preschool children acquired infection early in their lives through exposure to infected stream water by their mothers, while the older children visit the stream for playing, bathing and swimming. It has therefore become imperative for preschool children to be included in the planning of schistosomiasis intervention programmes as a means of reducing transmission.

Levels of intestinal nematode infections were assessed six months after a two year trial of ivermectin for efficacy against onchocerciasis had ended. In the trial the inhabitants of six villages in Sierra Leone were offered treatment with ivermectin or placebo at six monthly intervals for four rounds in total. Quantitative faecal egg counts were carried out on stool samples provided by 202 subjects, all of whom had received all four rounds of treatment, in two of the villages (Dodo and Mogibisi). These data were analysed by a novel procedure in which a 3-way ANOVA with negative binomial errors enabled village and host gender influences on the outcome of treatment to be identified. Necator americanus was the most common species showing an overall prevalence of 90% but a higher intensity in Mogibisi relative to Dodo, particularly among male subjects. Neither prevalence nor intensity of infection were altered in ivermectin-treated compared with placebo-treated subjects. Trichuris trichiura was the least common species with a prevalence of 15%. It was concluded that there was no significant protection from infection with this species among the ivermectin relative to the placebo-treated subjects. Ascaris lumbricoides, with an overall prevalence of 39%, was more common among female (50%) compared with male (27%) villagers. Prevalence was not significantly affected by ivermectin but the intensity of infection declined by 91.3% in Dodo whilst in Mogibisi intensity was only reduced by 14.6%. The results indicate that the long-term benefits of treatment of necatoriasis and trichuriasis with ivermectin are likely to be minimal whilst those of ascariasis will depend on the individual characteristics of local communities and may differ quite markedly within a limited geographical area. Possible explanations for the discrepancy in efficacy between villages are considered.

Seasonal variation in a particular area may influence the occurrence of helminth infections and determining such fluctuations may help to maximize the beneficial effects of mass treatment. This study determined the seasonal variations in infection levels of Ascaris lumbricoides between March 2000 and June 2001 in two selected low-country plantations. Four hundred and seventy seven persons aged between 2 and 74 years (median 13) participated. Stools were tested using the Kato-Katz method and the prevalence and intensity of infection determined. All persons were treated with a single dose of mebendazole. Monthly follow-ups were undertaken with similar stool examinations and treatment given if found positive. Infection and re-infection rates were calculated each month. Rainfall and temperature were recorded each day. Total rainfall, number of wet-days and mean temperature was calculated for each month. The prevalence of Ascaris infection was 53.4% and 51.0% at Maliboda and Ayr estates respectively. Highest infection and re-infection rates at Maliboda (37.7%, 37.2%) occurred in June and at Ayr (13.3%, 25.9%) in October 2000 respectively. During the study period, the mean rainfall was 28.1 cm (range 7.4–63.9 cm) and mean temperature 27.6°C (range 22.1°–34.4°C). Significant correlations (P<0.05) were found between the re-infection rate and rainfall, temperature and the number of wet-days. Similar correlations were observed with the infection rate and temperature and the number of wet-days. Ascaris infections were found to correlate significantly only with the number of wet-days in a month (P<0.01). Thus, the number of wet-days appears to be a better indicator of Ascaris infections than total rainfall or mean temperature.

The communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant predictor of abundance of any helminth species, and host length was only weakly and positively related to the abundance of A. simplex. Infracommunities were species-poor, with 56% of fish harbouring only one parasite species, and 92% up to two species. Infracommunities were strongly dominated by A. simplex (389 fish) or S. lophii (6 fish). Fish length or gender, and the year of capture, did not affect species richness nor the degree of dominance. There were no significant pair-wise associations between species. Infracommunities were basically composed of several allogenic parasites with different life histories that converge in the blue whiting through the local food web. The parasite fauna of blue whiting in the study area was poor and distinctive compared with that of other localities in the north-east North Atlantic. These peculiarities might primarily be related to the composition of the local community of definitive hosts, although there might also be some influence of the geographical distribution of parasites.

The varying susceptibility of local races of bulinid snails to different strains of Schistosoma haematobium has been recorded by many workers including Le Roux, 1954; Cridland, 1955, 1957; McCullough, 1957, 1962; Wright, 1962, 1963; Cowper, 1963; Pitchford, 1965 and Paperna, 1968. The respective species groups of snails referred to are those created by Mandahl-Barth (1958). As a result of his experiments Le Roux (1958) suggested that there are two separate species of parasite, the form transmitted in North Africa by the truncates group of snails being known as S. haematobium and that developing in Africa south of the Sahara in the africanus species group as S. capense (Harley, 1864), a view which has been supported by many workers.

We describe the life cycle of the bucephalid Prosorhynchoides carvajali from the intertidal rocky zone of central Chile. To elucidate the life cycle of this digenean, two mytilid bivalves, Semimytilus algosus and Perumytilus purpuratus, and ten intertidal fish species belonging to the families Blenniidae, Tripterygiidae, Labrisomidae, Kyphosidae and Gobiesocidae were analysed for natural infections. In addition, experimental infections of fish were undertaken and molecular analyses were performed of several developmental stages of the digeneans in various host species. Experimental infections of fish were made from infected mytilids to determine which fish species were suitable for the metacercarial stage of Prosorhynchoides. We also determined the abundance and prevalence of metacercariae in natural infections in fish and found that they were lower than in the experimental infections. A molecular analysis showed that sporocysts from S. algosus were identical to metacercariae from five fish species and P. carvajali adults. Sporocysts isolated from P. purpuratus were similar to metacercaria found in one fish species only (G. laevifrons) but were different from P. carvajali, with 1.9–2.0% genetic divergence. Therefore, the complete life cycle of P. carvajali consists of the mytilid species S. algosus as the first intermediate host, at least five intertidal fish species as second intermediate hosts (Scartichthys viridis, Auchenionchus microcirrhis, Hypsoblennius sordidus, Helcogrammoides chilensis and Gobiesox marmoratus), two carnivorous fish as definitive hosts (Auchenionchus microcirrhis and A. variolosus) and one occasional definitive host (Syciases sanguineus). This is the second description of a life cycle of a marine digenean from Chile.

An investigation of the factors necessary in the development of eggs of the mouse pinworm, A. tetraptera, outside the host, have shown that both oxygen and a suitable temperature (20–30°C.) are necessary. Development at high temperatures (37°C.) leads to a reduction in the number of infective eggs. It has also been demonstrated that there exists in the development of the infective eggs, a period of incubation during which the infective larvae within the eggs, though morphologically well-developed, are incapable of hatching.

Adult worms of the rural strain of Wuchereria bancrofti in Peninsular Malaysia obtained from a successful experimental transmission in an immunosuppressed Macaca fascicularis are described for the first time. Although the worms, especially females, were slightly smaller, they were similar in morphology to those of the periodic and non-periodic W. bancrofti previously described.

In the early spring of 1931 one or two hibernating adults of Phyllotrela undulata Kutsch., recovered from a piece of tree bark, were dissected by chance and found to be parasitized by a nematode. Realising that the host insect was not only of wide distribution throughout the country but also that, amongst farmers and other crop growers, it was known as a serious and destructive pest, this accidental record of parasitism led the writer to enter upon the present study.

A new species of Brugia, from the lymphatic glands of dogs in Ceylon, is described. It is closely related to B. patei (Buckley, Nelson and Heisch, 1958).

Also from dogs in Ceylon, a species of Dipetalonema was recovered whose relationship with other species of Dipetalonema is discussed. In the absence of conclusive evidence that it is a distinct species it is for the present regarded as a species inquirenda.

Medium in which T. canis larvae had been cultured was applied to a Sephadex G-25 gel column and four fractions (Fr. 1-Fr. 4) were isolated. Each fraction was administered to mice by implanting a mini-osmotic pump into the peritoneal cavity and the subsequent peripheral blood eosinophilic counts were recorded. Mice given Fr. 1 showed a markedly greater eosinophilic response than did those given the other fractions. Complement activation by each fraction was investigated using normal human serum. Fr. 1 and Fr. 3 had a capacity to activate complement. The results suggest that Fr. 1 may be not only antigenetic and allergenic but also could induce eosinophilia and activate complement.

The experimental infection of young cattle egrets with metacercarial cysts of Clinostomum tilapiae Ukoli, 1966 from Tilapia spp. is described.

A graph of mean length and breadth of body, oral and ventral suckers, cirrus pouch, ovary and anterior testis, is plotted against the duration of infection in days. Most of these dimensions are found to attain a peak two days after infection. It is also found that while the ovary increases in size with age, the cirrus pouch remains constant, so that in mature adults, both are about equal in size,

It is shown, by plotting length of organs against length of body and by expressing mean measurements of certain dimensions as percentages of body length, that apart from the testes, all the other organs in both the metacercariae and the adults maintain a constant relationship both with one another and with body length as they grow older.

The importance of platynosomiasis has increased in feline veterinary practice, but aspects related to the specificity of Platynosomum spp. in definitive hosts requires further study. Although morphological traits suggest that the same species, P. illiciens, may infect both birds and mammals, the synonymies previously proposed have not been widely accepted, likely because host specificity is assumed. In addition, the name P. fastosum has frequently been used for parasites recovered from mammals. In the present study, metacercariae (n= 100/animal) of P. illiciens recovered from lizards (Hemidactylus mabouia) in Brazil were fed to Australian parakeets (Melopsittacus undulatus) and mice. Two parasites were recovered from the liver of one M. undulatus specimen during a necropsy that was performed 105 days after infection, and all mice were found to be infected with 37 ± 12 (18–48) parasites. The morphology of the P. illiciens obtained from the parakeet was similar to that of parasites obtained from mice and those described previously from naturally infected birds and mammals. Non-specificity of P. illiciens in hosts is discussed briefly, based on the parasitological and morphological results obtained during the avian experimental platynosomiasis and the epidemiology and geographical distribution of this parasite.

All 23 6–8-week old outbred female ICR mice, each fed 100 metacercarial cysts of Echinostoma caproni, were infected on days 2, 4, 6, and 8 postinfection (PI) with a mean of 45 worms/host. To examine worm distribution in the mouse, the small intestine was divided into five equal sections (segments 1–5 beginning with the pylorus). Worms were found mainly in segments 3 and 4 and were never found in segment 1. Mean body area of worms fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF), hot alcohol-formalin-acetic acid (AFA) and aceto-carmine increased slowly until day 4 and then rapidly until day 8 PI. There was a significant difference in the mean body area of worms fixed in hot AFA, NBF, and aceto-carmine on all days except 4 and 6. Distinction of the ovary and ootype was apparent by day 6 and uterine cooling was observed by day 8 PI. Only 2 of 50 worms showed eggs in the uterus on day 8 PI.
