This worm was very abundant in the rectum of a tortoise, Homopus femoralis, from the Bloemfontein area, Orange Free State, South Africa. It was found together with several other oxyurids the description of which will form the subject of a later paper. Although the Probstmayria far exceeded the other oxyurids in number, male specimens of this genus were extremely rare for only one male was found after a prolonged search during the course of which many hundreds of females were encountered. In order that no specimens should be lost the entire alimentary canal together with its contents was submerged in hot 70% alcohol after scraping the mucosa.

A new nematode species, Raphidascaris mundeswariensis n. sp. (Raphidascarididae), is described from male and female specimens found in the intestines of the mudskipper Apocryptes bato (Hamilton, 1822) (Gobiidae) from the Mundeswari River of West Bengal, India. This species is distinguished from its congeners by 214–255-μm-long spicules, 14 pairs of preanal papillae of two markedly different sizes, one pair of adanal papillae, six pairs of postanal papillae and the absence of lateral alae. Phylogenetic analyses using partial sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA gene place the new species in a clade containing Raphidascaris gigi, Raphidascaris lophii, Raphidascaris longispicula and two species of Hysterothylacium. The molecular analyses also corroborate results of previous studies that have found Raphidascaris and Hysterothylacium to be paraphyletic. The finding of R. mundeswariensis in A. bato is the first Raphidascaris species described from a mudskipper anywhere.

Trichinellosis in humans is most often caused by the parasite Trichinella spiralis. The clinical course of the disease is diverse and the symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Symptoms usually disappear within a few months, but encysted larvae in the muscles can cause myalgia and weakness that last for years. However, the existence of chronic trichinellosis as a disease is still debatable. This study presents the results obtained at the National Reference Laboratory for Trichinellosis – INEP, Serbia. The study was conducted to assess the immunoserological, biochemical and symptomatic disease parameters of twelve patients who acquired trichinellosis 13 and 18 years ago, respectively. They were involved in two T. spiralis outbreaks in Serbia, at the village of Kumane and the city of Belgrade (nine and three patients, respectively). Results indicated the presence of specific anti-Trichinella antibodies in 83% of the total number of patients. However, while the humoral immune response to Trichinella lasted for more than a decade reaching almost two decades after the acute infection phase (7/9 and 3/3 respectively, in two outbreaks), persistence of chronic muscular pain, as the most prolonged symptom of trichinellosis, could be found in the majority of patients from the Kumane outbreak (7/9). As a consequence, these patients suffered from limitations in daily living activities for the same period of time. The results presented in this paper are our contribution to the view that trichinellosis as a chronic disease with symptoms exists and may be related to the severity of the disease in the acute phase.

Amongst the plant-parasitic members of the genus Anguillulina, 12 species have been recorded from true galls and of these, one occurs on roots and the remainder on shoot structures. In four only of these species have we any detailed information on the structure of the galls formed as a result of the action of the parasite, namely in the cases of A. tritici, A. agrostis, A. graminophila and A. radicicola. In the case of the two first mentioned, galls are formed from modified flower tissues; in the case of A. graminophila we have galls on leaves and in A. radicicola galls on roots. There are considerable gaps in our knowledge of the reaction of the host plant to the particular parasite attacking it and also concerning the mode of action of the latter in stimulating the production of galls by the host.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined use of different chemical (albendazole, ivermectin, glycerine and Vaseline) and biological (Monacrosporium thaumasium) compounds in the control of Ancylostoma caninum. Infective larvae of A. caninum were obtained from coprocultures of positive faeces from naturally infected dogs. We used 1% ivermectin, 1% albendazole, 100% glycerine, 100% Vaseline and an isolate of the nematophagous fungus M. thaumasium (NF34), alone or in combinations. Next, an experimental test was set up with 16 groups in microtubes, with a 24-h interaction. The groups (G1 to G15) that contained any chemical or biological compound (NF34) and/or their combined use (chemical + biological) showed a difference in relation to the control group, except G5 – Vaseline 100% without combinations. It was concluded that, even on an experimental basis, the combined use of anthelmintic drugs with biological control was efficient; however, more studies must be carried out in order to elucidate the synergistic action between chemical and biological compounds to be used in the effective control of hookworms in the future.

Two new species of the genus Aporcelinus from the USA are described and illustrated. Aporcelinus floridensis sp. n. is characterized by its 1.12–1.52 mm long body, lip region offset by marked constriction and 14.5–17.0 μm broad with perioral liplets, odontostyle 16.5–20.0 μm at its ventral side and 1.1–1.2 times the lip region diameter, neck 316–395 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 43–48% of total neck length, uterus simple and 33–56 μm long or 0.8–1.2 times the corresponding body diameter, V = 48–54, female tail conical (36–49 μm long, c = 27–41, c’ = 1.2–2.0) with finely rounded terminus and no hyaline portion, and male absent. Aporcelinus paolae sp. n. is characterized by its 1.29–1.80 mm long body, lip region offset by marked constriction and 14–16 μm broad, odontostyle 15–17 μm at its ventral side and 1.0–1.1 times the lip region diameter, neck 314–397 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 43–53% of total neck length, uterus tripartite and 128–164 μm long or 2.6–3.6 times the corresponding body diameter, V = 53–57, female tail conical (30–39 μm long, c = 40–51, c’ = 1.1–1.3) with finely rounded terminus and variably re-curved dorsad, male tail conical (27–36 μm, c = 39–59, c’ = 0.9–1.2), ventrally straight and dorsally convex, spicules 48–54 μm long, and 7–9 irregularly spaced ventromedian supplements lacking hiatus. The analyses of the D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA (LSU) gene sequences of the two new species confirmed the monophyly of the genus, based upon currently available data, showing a close relationship between the genera Aporcelinus and Makatinus, and justified the placement of Aporcelaimellus, Makatinus and Aporcelinus under the subfamily Aporcelaimellinae.

The tegument of schistosomes is a source of many potential anti-Schistosoma vaccine molecules. This work aimed to assess the protective effects of the adult Schistosoma mansoni tegument treated (TT) with sub-curative praziquantel (PZQ), whether in vivo (in vivo TT) or in vitro (in vitro TT), in murine schistosomiasis. In vitro TT and in vivo TT showed great similarity, and they differed from untreated tegument antigen (Teg) in terms of quantity and quality of protein bands on SDS–PAGE. Two immunization trials were performed, each with 50 mice, divided randomly into five groups of 10 mice each: (1) uninfected control mice (UC), (2) infected mice given phosphate buffer saline + adjuvant (PBS + adjuvant), (3) infected, Teg vaccinated, (4) infected, in vivo TT vaccinated, and (5) infected, in vitro TT vaccinated. All the immunizations with antigens induced mixed Th1/Th2 immune responses, as indicated by significantly high (P < 0.001) specific IgG2a and IgG1 levels, with Th1 predominating, as shown by a diminished IgG1/IgG2a ratio, as well as a high serum concentration of IFN-γ, an absence of IL-4 and increased IL-10. In vitro TT gave the most pronounced response. With respect to reduction of total worm burden, relative to PBS + adjuvant mice, in vitro TT achieved the highest significant (P < 0.001) results, followed by in vivo TT and Teg (51.8–57.04%, 44.6–50.2% and 35.2–39.3%, respectively). In scanning electron microscopy studies, all the tested antigens caused tegumental changes in adult worms, with the worst occurring with in vitro TT, such as retracted ventral sucker, an effect on the gynaecophoric canal, and changes to tubercles. In conclusion, in vitro TT, which is cheap to prepare, could be a potential vaccine against S. mansoni.

Ligula (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) infections in gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) differ markedly in the pathology that is observed in the host, particularly with respect to a tissue response and the extent of inhibition of gonadal development. The entire internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (ITS-1, 5.8S and ITS-2) and the large subunit domains D1–D3 were sequenced and compared in parasites from these fish from Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, together with a single specimen from minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) from Wales. Sufficient differences were observed between parasites from R. rutilus and G. gobio to support the suggestion that they may represent different strains/species. In contrast, Ligula from P. phoxinus closely resembled those from R. rutilus. Ligula infections in G. gobio were recorded prior to the introduction of R. rutilus. The co-existence of separate strains or species of Ligula in Lough Neagh probably resulted from the introduction of R. rutilus to these waters, correlated with an increase in the number of great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus).

Proteocephalus pentastoma and Polyonchobothrium polypteri are redescribed from specimens from Polypterus spp. in the Sudan. Proteocephalus pentastoma is considered to be a valid species.

The Potato Testing Station at Ormskirk, a branch of the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, has during the past season, been found to include considerable areas of land heavily infested with the eelworm Heterodera schachtii. This discovery was made subsequent to the failure of some of the potato crops, which, in the course of the normal rotation practised at the station, happened last season to be grown on the affected areas.

1. A new species, Stellocaronema buckleyi, is described from the Indian Red-wattled Lapwing (Lobivanellus indicus indicus) from Sheikhupura district of the Punjab province of Pakistan.

2. The following species are recorded from new hosts and for the first time from Pakistan: Hadjelia truncata and Dispharynx spiralis from the Indian Magpie (Pica pica); Acuaria anthuris from the Rosy Pastor (Pastor roseus); Acuaria brevispicula and Diplotriaena nochti from the Indian Mynah (Acridotheres ginginianus).

3.It is contended that Diplotriaena tricuspis of Canavan (1931) and Mazhar (1933) are identical with Diplotriaena nochti, and that Diplotriaena acridotheres (Karve, 1934) and Diplotriaena nagpurensis (Karve, 1934) should also be treated as synonyms of D. nochti

4.Acuaria brevispicula Maplestone, 1932 has been redescribed and certain discrepancies in Maplestone's description, due to insufficient material, have been made good. It is contended that A. kungi Singh, 1948 should fall as a synonym to A. brevispicula.

Gnathostomiasis by Gnathostoma hispidum has occurred mainly in southern and western areas of Japan since 1980. In all cases, patients had eaten live loaches, freshwater fish imported from southeast Asia. Chief symptoms were creeping linear skin eruptions and eosinophilia, both of which disappeared in most patients within three months after the onset, and never recurred thereafter. In order to study how gnathostome larvae may survive and behave in humans, rats were infected with gnathostome larvae. Loaches were purchased in city markets in Fukuoka. Gnathostome larvae (G. hispidum) were recovered from the fish and fed to rats. They were killed at intervals of one and six months and one, two and three years postinoculation. Encysted larvae were found in the muscles of all rats and recovered larvae were all viable. A migrating larva was observed in muscle tissue from one rat that was killed three years postinoculation. In histological sections, walls around encysted larva were much thinner in a rat killed three years postinoculation than in a rat killed one month postinoculation.

Continuing the work on which a paper was published by the writer in the Journal of Helminthology, April, 1937, it was decided to concentrate on calcium chloro-acetate in the 1938 field experiments on soil treatment for the control of the potato sickness associated with Heterodera schachtii.

Tests were made at five different centres in the counties of Glamorgan and Monmouth with amounts equivalent to 3 cwt. and 5 cwt. to the acre.

1. Heavy intestinal infestation with Plagiorchis (M.) megalorchis Rees, 1952, in four two-week old turkey poults is described. This was presumably the cause of death in the four poults and possibly of nine other birds of the same hatch.

2. The epizootiology of the condition is described.

3. The life-cycle of the parasite has been investigated, using turkey poults as the definitive host.

Anguillulina has been revived by Baylis and Daubney (1926) as the correct generic name for those worms which for many years have been considered as belonging to the genus Tylenchus, at least by most specialists on nematodes and plant-pathologists. Gervais and van Beneden on pp. 101 and 102 of the second volume of their work Zoologie Médicale, published in 1859, gave a brief account of the eelworm parasite of wheat causing “purples” or “cockles” and that found by Kuhn in 1858 in the heads of the fuller's thistle, teasle, both of which they designate as Anguillulines (Anguillulina) as follows:—Anguillilina tritici and Anguillulina dipsaci.

It may be pointed out, in passing, that they were not consistent in the use of the word, for at the end of the description of A. dipsaci they spell it as Anguillula not Anguillulina. This may, however, perhaps be regarded as an unintentional slip or a printer's error. Bastian's paper in which first the name Tyleenchus and then Tylenchus is applied to members of this genus appeared in 1865 and he designated Tylenchus davainii as type species of the genus in a letter to Stiles dated March 22nd, 1904, vide Stiles and Hassall (1905).

The following description is based upon a specimen which was evacuated from a Kea, Nestor notabilis, kept in captivity in the London Zoological Gardens. The Kea, a member of the Psittacciformes, has a very limited distribution, occurring only in South Island, New Zealand. This particular bird had arrived from New Zealand and had been living in the Zoo six months before the cestode was evacuated.

It is believed that this cestode represents a genus new to science, and the name Pulluterina is proposed, with the specific name P. nestoris after the host.

Nicoll and Minchin gave an account in 1910, in the Abstract of Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, of their finding a Cysticercoid in the rat-flea, Ceratophyllus fasciatus, “very like the scolex of Hymenolepis murina Duj. … it [H. murina] was the only rat-tapeworm to which the Cysticercoid could be referred.”

Species of Cloacina Linstow, 1898 (Nematoda: Strongyloidea) are reported and/or described from the stomach of the macropodid marsupial Wallabia bicolor (Desmarest, 1804) collected in eastern Australia. Nematodes were examined from 26 hosts collected in 3 states and the number of species of Cloacina in any one host was 2 – 7. The following species were encountered: C. wallabiae Johnston and Mawson, 1939, C. gallardi Johnston and Mawson, 1940, C. edwardsi Mawson, 1972 and C. cornuta (Davey and Wood, 1938) the last named constituting a new host record. The following new species are described: C. mawsonae sp. nov., C. papillata sp. nov., C. annulata sp. nov., C. castor sp. nov. and C. pollux sp. nov.

Three species, and one variety, of the pseudophyllid genus Bothridium de Blainville, are known to occur in pythons. B. ovatum occurs in the African python (P. sebce): B. pythonis in the Indian python (P. molurus) and B. pythonis var minor in P. reticulatus, the Indo-Malayan python; while Maplestone and Southwell (1923, p. 317) record another species, B. ornatum from the Australasian python (P. spilotes var variegatus). The literature on this genus appears, so far, to have dealt only with morphology and taxonomies. Joyeux and Baer (1927, p. 126) describe the anatomy and relationships of B. ovatum, B. pythonis and B. pythonis var. minor. Braun (1894–1900, p. 1690) gives a brief description, accompanied by very detailed figures, of the anatomy of B. pythonis and also figures the embryonated ovum (pi. Iviii, fig. 8). This is the only figure of any developmental stage of the parasite which the writer has been able to discover. Southwell (1930, p. 58) records the worm from P. reticularis and P. molurus, in Bengal, Nepal and Ceylon, and summarises its anatomy. He also mentions its occurrence in a tiger which he thinks had been eating a python. No account of the life-cycle of any species of Bothridium appears to have been written. When, therefore, in February, 1932, some living Bothridium arrived in the Helminthology Department, it was resolved to discover how far its development resembled that of other better-known Psuedophyllids.

One hundred and six trees suffering from Red Ring disease were examined and the distribution of worms plotted. The results indicate that infection can start in either the root system or in the upper part of the tree. The distribution of worms in 21 of the trees examined was consistent with the disease starting in the base of the tree; and 5 trees exhibited conditions consistent with infection starting in the upper part of the tree. Of thirteen trees, more than 20 years old, one was found to be infected in the top only; the other carried an infection in the roots and lower stem. It is concluded that the disease can start in either the top of a tree or in the root system but for reasons given in the text, it is not possible to say which is the more frequent.
