RAPD technique was used to differentiate individuals of Anisakis simplex obtained from Merluccius merluccius, Phycis blennoides, Conger conger and Lepidorhombus boscii, from the North Atlantic Ocean. The amplification patterns of the host DNA controls were markedly different from those obtained for the parasitic material. No variation within the same host was detected. The amplification patterns for larvae obtained from fish of the same genus were somewhat different. The amplification patterns of A. simplex isolates from M. merluccius, P. blennoides, C. conger and L. boscii, were different. These results suggest the possible existence of two populations with a considerable high genetic variability and a different adaptation to different host species.

Brachylaemus dasyuri (Johnston, 1912) is recorded from Thylacis obesulus (Shaw & Nodder, 1797) from Queensland. It is redescribed and Brachylaemus simile (Johnston, 1912) is confirmed to be a synonym.

A review is made of the species of Brachylaemus recorded from American and Australian marsupials. It seems probable that they have arisen from a common ancestral type parasite in an ancestral marsupial.

Experiments were carried out to obtain additional data concerning the role of IgM antibodies, specific for the cuticular surface of the microfilariae (mf) of A. viteae, in clearing microfilaraemia from high-and low-responder mice infected by transplanted adult worms. Although BALB/c mice, which sustain a chronic microfilaraemia, produced IgM mf surface-specific antibodies, the binding to target mf was weak when compared to that of antibodies from the serum of the resistant C57BL/10 mice. Furthermore, antibodies from BALB/c mice were not as efficient as those from C57BL/10 mice in promoting the adherence of immune or control leukocytes to mf in vitro. Evidence is provided to show that mf shed surface bound antibody. Although the results do not establish conclusively the mechanism underlying the contrasting response phenotypes of C57BL/10 and BALB/c mice, they provide support for the involvement of antibody in controlling microfilaraemia and suggest that quantitative and qualitative differences in the amount and affinity of IgM antibody specific for the mf surface, together with the natural tendency of the mf to shed surface bound antibody at 37°C. may combine to allow the former strain to clear microfilaraemia efficiently whilst the latter sustains a chronic infection.

A post-parturient rise in worm egg count was seen in ewes which lambed in the autumn following ovulation induced by hormone treatment. Similarly treated ewes in the same flock which proved to be barren showed only a slight increase in egg count. There were indications that hormone treatment may be associated with egg count rises which differ in intensity and duration from those reported in ewes which ovulate spontaneously.

Early in June, 1933, the writer received two vials of caterpillars, to which nematodes were attached, from Mr. A. M. Adamson of the Pacific Entomological Survey with a request, supported by Mr. E. P. Mumford, the Director of the Survey, that an examination and identification of the helminths would be much appreciated.

During the tour in Kashmir, two males and four females of the species to be described were collected from the vicinity of the heart and the body cavity of the white cheeked Bulbul, Molpastes leucogenys leucogenys.

These are rather slender worms with attenuated anterior ends. The posterior ends are twisted into 2–3 coils. The cuticle is thin, smooth, nonstriated, but richly furnished with bosses throughout the length of the body.

A successful peritoneal transplant of 5 Cardiofilaria nilesi adult worms, 3♀ Symbo; and 2♂ Symbo; is reported. Microfilaraemia in the recipient chicken was found on the 6th day after the transplant. The count rose to 4/20 c.mm., from 1/20 c.mm. in 19 days after the transplant. The highest count recorded was 14/20 c.mm. The microfilaraemia persisted for 63 days.

The rat tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta can bioconcentrate several elements to conspicuously higher concentrations than tissues of their definitive host. The main aim of this study was to locate parts of the tapeworm into which lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, manganese and iron are accumulated. Male Wistar rats were experimentally infected with H. diminuta and worms were exposed to two different forms of lead for 6 weeks through the oral exposure of their rat hosts. After the exposure period, the element levels were determined in the posterior and anterior proglottids of the tapeworm. In all cases, lead concentrations were higher in the anterior parts than the posterior parts. Concentrations of cadmium, copper, iron, manganese and zinc were also significantly higher in the anterior parts. Zinc concentrations showed an opposite trend, with higher zinc levels detected in the posterior part of the strobila, in the control group. The present study demonstrates that risk and essential elements are accumulated mainly into the anterior part of H. diminuta.

In the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus crassus five embryonic envelopes have been identified, including four, which are similar to those in previously studied acanthocephalans and a supplementary one, located between the outer and the second envelopes, which is characteristic of only a few Eoacanthocephala. The terminology of the envelopes in relation to their origin and possible function is discussed.

Nematodes of the family Thelastomatidae are parasitic in the alimentary tract of many arthropods, including Periplaneta americana L. In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, two nematode species, namely Hammerschmidtiella indicus and Thelastoma icemi, belonging to this family have been reported. In the present study, the molecular phylogeny of these two nematode species was derived using small subunit (18S) sequence and secondary-structure analyses. The small subunit sequence analyses were carried out to explore the validation and systematics of these species. Phylogenetic analyses were performed for primary sequence data as well as using neighbour-joining and maximum-parsimony approaches. In contrast, the inferred secondary structures for the two species, using free-energy modelling, showed structural identities. As well as this, motif sequences were also found to be a promising tool for nematode species identification. The study provides molecular characterization based on primary sequence data of the 18S ribosomal DNA region of the nematodes along with secondary-structure data and motif sequences for inferences at higher taxonomic levels.

A new species belonging to the genus Laimydorus, and a known species of the genus Labronema, collected from the rhizosphere of grassland plants in West Azarbaijan province, Iran, are presented. The new species is characterized by its body length (1.56–1.81 mm in females and 1.39–1.57 mm in males), lip region offset by weak constriction and wider than adjacent body (11–14 μm), odontostyle 17–20 μm long, neck length 312–434 μm, vulva longitudinal (V = 42.2–46.5), uterus well-developed and with Z-differentiations, tail long (219–237 μm, c = 6.9–8.3, c´ = 8.2–10) in females, short and convex-conoid with blunt terminus (19–22 μm, c = 68–72.5, c´= 0.77–0.84) in males, spicules 40–45 μm long, and 18–20 contiguous ventromedian supplements with hiatus. Molecular analyses, using Bayesian inference based on D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S rRNA (LSU), placed the new species in a clade comprising representatives of the genera Nevadanema, Dorylaimus, Labronema, Calcaridorylaimus, Mesodorylaimus, and Prodorylaimus, which all belong to Dorylaimidae. In addition, new data (molecular, morphometrics, images, and geographic distribution) are presented for the Iranian population of Labronema vulvapapillatum.

Many temperate freshwater habitats are at risk for contamination by run-off associated with the application of road de-icing salts. Elevated salinity can have various detrimental effects on freshwater organisms, including greater susceptibility to infection by parasites and pathogens. However, to better understand the net effects of road salt exposure on host–parasite dynamics, it is necessary to consider the impacts on free-living parasite infectious stages, such as the motile aquatic cercariae of trematodes. Here, we examined the longevity and activity of cercariae from four different freshwater trematodes (Ribeiroia ondatrae, Echinostoma sp., Cephalogonimus sp. and an unidentified strigeid-type) that were exposed to road salt at five different environmentally relevant concentrations (160, 360, 560, 760 and 960 mg/ml of sodium chloride). Exposure to road salt had minimal detrimental effects, with cercariae activity and survival often greatest at intermediate concentrations. Only the cercariae of Cephalogonimus sp. showed reduced longevity at the highest salt concentration, with those of both R. ondatrae and the unidentified strigeid-type exhibiting diminished activity, indicating interspecific variation in response. Importantly, cercariae seem to be relatively unaffected by salt concentrations known to increase infection susceptibility in some of their hosts. More studies will be needed to examine this potential dichotomy in road salt effects between hosts and trematodes, including influences on parasite infectivity.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto is regarded to have the highest zoonotic potential of all Echinococcus taxa. Globally, human infection due to this species constitutes over 88.44% of the total cystic echinococcosis (CE) burden. Here, we report a CE infection in a Nigerian camel caused by E. granulosus G1 genotype. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first encounter of the G1 genotype in the West Africa sub-region where the G6 genotype is reportedly prevalent, suggesting that the epidemiology of this highly zoonotic group could have a wider host range and distribution in the sub-region, and emphasizes the need for further investigation into the genetic diversity of Echinococcus spp. in Nigeria and across the sub-region.

The main goal of this work was to evaluate the in vitro biological activity of two ferrocenyl chalcones (FcC-1 and FcC-2) against Haemonchus contortus (third-stage larvae (L3)) and Nacobbus aberrans (second-stage juveniles (J2)). Both compounds were synthesized and characterized by usual spectroscopic methods and their molecular structures were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Nematode strains were examined in terms of percentage mortality of H. contortus (L3) by the action of FcC-1, which showed an effectivity of 100% at a concentration of 342 μM in 24 h, with EC50 = 20.33 μM and EC90 = 162.76 μM, whereas FcC-2 had an effectivity of 72% at a concentration of 342 μM in 24 h, with EC50 = 167.39 μM and EC90 = 316.21 μM. The effect of FcC-1 against nematode phytoparasite N. aberrans showed a better percentage of 95% at a concentration of 342 μM, with EC50 = 7.18 μM and EC90 = 79.25 μM, whereas the effect of FcC-2 was 87% at 342 μM, with EC50 = 168 μM and EC90 = 319.56 μM at 36 h. After treatment, the scanning electron micrographs revealed deformities in the dorsal flank and posterior part close to the tail of H. contortus L3. They showed moderate in vitro nematicidal activity against H. contortus L3 and N. aberrans J2.

The present report describes two cases of infection by Molossinema wimsatti in the brain of Pallas's mastiff bats (Molossus molossus). The first bat was captured and killed by a domestic cat in a suburban area of the municipality of Patos, Paraiba, northeastern Brazil. The second bat was found crawling on the ground in the same area before dying. No gross lesions were found at necropsy. Histology of the central nervous system revealed filarioid nematodes in the brain ventricles and cerebellum. There were adults, subadults and eggs, the latter sometimes containing microfilariae. No inflammatory response was observed in bat 1, while bat 2 presented a mild lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis. Three nematodes were recovered and submitted for parasitological examination. The diagnosis of M. wimsatti infection was based on the histomorphological and parasitological characteristics of the agent and its location in the brain ventricular system of insectivorous bats. The infection likely occurs in other insectivorous bats from South American and Caribbean countries but may be overlooked.

In this study we described two new trematode species, Lecithostaphylus halongi n. sp. (Zoogonidae, Lecithostaphylinae) and Gymnotergestia strongyluri n. sp. (Fellodistomidae, Tergestiinae), on the basis of morphological and molecular data. Adult worms of these two species were collected from, respectively, Hemiramphus spp. (Hemiramphidae) and Strongylura strongylura (Belonidae) caught in the coastal waters of Vietnam. Adult worms of L. halongi n. sp. are morphologically close to Lecithostaphylus gibsoni Cribb, Bray & Barker, 1992 ex Abudefduf whitleyi from Heron Island and Lecithostaphylus depauperati Yamaguti, 1970 ex Hemiramphus depauperatus from Hawaii, but differ from these species in having a larger cirrus sac and a different arrangement of vitelline fields. They also differ from Lecithostaphylus brayi Cabañas-Granillo, Solórzano-García, Mendoza-Garfias & Pérez-Ponce de León, 2020 in the 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence data at the interspecific level. Adult worms of G. strongyluri n. sp. ex S. strongylura are morphologically similar to Gymnotergestia chaetodipteri, the only previously known species of this genus, described from Chaetodipterus faber in Jamaica. The new species differs from G. chaetodipteri in body shape, testicular arrangement and the size of the pharynx and eggs. The 28S rDNA-based phylogenetic analysis indicates that G. strongyluri n. sp. is closely related to Tergestia spp., rendering Tergestia paraphyletic. Genetic divergence values between G. strongyluri n. sp. and Tergestia spp. are similar to those among species in the genera Tergestia, Steringophorus and Proctoeces. Our molecular results indicate that G. strongyluri n. sp. and Tergestia spp. may belong the same genus, but additional molecular data are needed for the final conclusion.

An analysis is made of the community structure of the helminth parasites of the tuna Euthynnus affinis collected off the coast of Visakhapatnam, Bay of Bengal. The helminth fauna comprised 23 species, consisting of two monogeneans, 18 digeneans, one larval cestode, one nematode and one acanthocephalan. Didymozoids, represented by 14 species, were the dominant members of the parasite spectrum. The parasite assemblage is characterized by species richness as well as a high diversity. Most of the parasites found, the didymozoids in particular, were host specialists, exhibiting a high degree of host specificity. The fauna comprised three core species, four satellite species and many secondary species, with no potential for interaction among them but the degree of predictability is high in that each infracommunity comprised two or three core species superimposed by a few secondary species. Many host factors such as the varied diet, high vagility, long life span and endothermy appear to have contributed to the development of the species rich and diverse parasite communities in the tuna. There was evidence for a decrease in parasite density and an increase in diversity with increase in host size, indicating that host size has a profound influence on the component community structure.

Mature specimens of Cucullanus heterochrous Rudolphi, 1802 (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) were obtained from the intestine of the flounder, Platichthys flesus, from Danish waters. Eggs embryonate in seawater but do not hatch. Fully developed larvae pressed out of eggs are 430 μm long with amphids and dereids and enclosed within the cuticle of a previous larval stage. Infective larvae are believed to be in their third stage. Experimental studies showed that the polychaetes, Nereis spp., Scoloplos armiger, Brada villosa and Capitella sp., may act as intermediate hosts. In N. diversicolor the larvae increase their length to 1 mm within four weeks (15°C) without moulting. Experimental infections showed that larvated eggs are not infective to fish, whereas >550 μm long larvae from polychaetes survived in 4–24 cm long flounders and plaice, Pleuronectes platessa. Third-stage larvae 550 μm to 1.1 mm long were found in the submucosa of the intestine one week post infection. At a length of about 800 μm to 1.4 mm they moult to fourth-stage larvae. Fourth-stage larvae, immature and mature worms occur in the intestine and rectum. Fourth-stage larvae and adults survived experimental transfer from one flounder to another. Similar developmental stages survived for two weeks in the intestine of experimentally infected cod, Gadus morhua.

The aim of this study was to develop a low-cost antifilarial immunoglobulin (Ig) G4 detection kit for the diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis. The kit was designed to be used by minimally trained personnel without the constraints of expensive laboratory equipment. We provide a description of the development and validation of a single-serum-dilution based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit with ready-to-use reagents for measuring antifilarial IgG4 antibodies. The kit was tested on residents in Brugia malayi-endemic areas in southern Thailand. Detection was performed by naked-eye observation of the resultant colour of the immunological reactivity. The coefficient of variation (CV) was used to assess the reproducibility of the results. Long-term stability was measured over a 6-month period. Sensitivity of the test kit was 97% when compared with microfilariae detection in thick blood smears. Specificity was 98.7% based on the sera of 57 patients living outside the endemic areas who were infected with other parasites and 100 parasite-free subjects. All positive CVs were < 10%. The test kit was remarkably stable over 6 months. Field validation was performed by the detection of antifilarial IgG4 in 4365 serum samples collected from residents of brugian filariasis-endemic areas and compared with outcome colours of the test samples by the naked eye. Subsequent ELISA evaluation of these results using an ELISA reader indicated high agreement by the kappa statistic. These results demonstrate that the test kit is efficient and useful for public health laboratories as an alternative tool for the diagnosis of lymphatic filarial infection.
