The temporary storage and subsequent release of water at glacial margins can cause severe flooding in downstream areas and substantially impact glacier dynamics. Alpine subglacial lakes may not be identified until they become subaerially exposed or release a jokulhlaup. We use interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to identify and characterize three dynamic alpine subglacial lakes of Brady Glacier, Alaska, USA. We quantify changes in vertical displacement of the glacier surface and lake volumes from September 1995 through March 1996 using European Remote-sensing Satellite-1/-2 (ERS- 1/-2) tandem data. In the autumn, subsidence ranged from 4 to 26cmd-1 and the volume of water discharged ranged from 22 000 ± 2000 to 243 000 ± 14 000m3d-1. Subsidence and discharge rates declined significantly during the winter and continued at a lesser rate through March. Application of this technique may allow researchers to locate alpine subglacial lakes years or decades before they begin to release hazardous outburst floods and substantially impact glacier dynamics.

The ability of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) to record change in glaciers and icefields on seasonal to interannual time-scales is useful in maritime mountain regions where visible data are often obscured by clouds. A time series of RADARSAT and second European Remote-sensing Satellite (ERS-2) SAR images shows dramatic changes related to the onset and progression of glacier melting on the Juneau Icefield, southeast Alaska, U.S.A. Four “radar glacier zones” are interpreted from SAR images as snow that is dry during winter, an early snowmelt (M), a second phase of snowmelt (M2) and bare ice. These zones develop every year on the Juneau Icefield and other mid-latitude glaciers. Summer field observations on the Juneau Icefield during 1997 and 1998 constrain interpretations of the C-band radar glacier zones. Of the two zones that occur in melting snow (M, M2), M has low radar backscatter coefficients (σ° < −12), in contrast to the higher backscatter coefficients (σ° > −12) of the subsequent M2 zone. Snow moisture and surface roughness at the scale of the radar wavelength (5.6 cm) were measured to characterize the melt zones. Correlation length, wetness and grain-size in the two zones are not distinguishable in the late ablation season. Mean surface roughness, due to the presence of suncups, is higher in the M2 zone than in the M zone and probably causes the higher backscatter due to greater scattering.

A surface cooling of ∼1.7°C occurred over the ∼two millennia prior to ∼1700 CE at the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) Divide site, based on trends in observed bubble number-density of samples from the WDC06A ice core, and on an independently constructed accumulation-rate history using annual-layer dating corrected for density variations and thinning from ice flow. Density increase and grain growth in polar firn are both controlled by temperature and accumulation rate, and the integrated effects are recorded in the number-density of bubbles as the firn changes to ice. Number-density is conserved in bubbly ice following pore close-off, allowing reconstruction of either paleotemperature or paleo-accumulation rate if the other is known. A quantitative late-Holocene paleoclimate reconstruction is presented for West Antarctica using data obtained from the WAIS Divide WDC06A ice core and a steady-state bubble number-density model. The resultant temperature history agrees closely with independent reconstructions based on stable-isotopic ratios of ice. The ∼1.7°C cooling trend observed is consistent with a decrease in Antarctic summer duration from changing orbital obliquity, although it remains possible that elevation change at the site contributed part of the signal. Accumulation rate and temperature dropped together, broadly consistent with control by saturation vapor pressure.

The results of measurements of radio-wave velocities (RWV) by wide-angle reflection (WAR) methods in the temperate Abramov Glacier in the Alai Mountain Ridge and the “two-layered” sub-polar Fridtjovbreen and Hansbreen on Svalbard using a low-frequency (2–13 MHz) radar are considered and discussed. The experimental data obtained and the data from the literature show that the values of RWV could be a good indicator of the hydrothermal state of glaciers. As such, these data enable the identification of cold, temperate and transitional (two-layered) glaciers, and can be used for estimation of the water content in glaciers and changes in the hydrothermal state.

We present techniques for obtaining large (∼100 L STP) samples of ancient air for analysis of 14C of methane (14CH4)and other trace constituents. Paleoatmospheric 14CH4 measurements should constrain the fossil fraction of past methane budgets, as well as provide a definitive test of methane clathrate involvement in large and rapid methane concentration ([CH4]) increases that accompanied rapid warming events during the last deglaciation. Air dating to the Younger Dryas–Preboreal and Oldest Dryas–Bølling abrupt climatic transitions was obtained by melt extraction from old glacial ice outcropping at an ablation margin in West Greenland. The outcropping ice and occluded air were dated using a combination of δ15N of N2, δ18O of O2, δ18Oice and [CH4] measurements. The [CH4] blank of the melt extractions was <4 ppb. Measurements of δ18O and δ15N indicated no significant gas isotopic fractionation from handling. Measured Ar/N2, CFC-11 and CFC-12 in the samples indicated no significant contamination from ambient air. Ar/N2, Kr/Ar and Xe/Ar ratios in the samples were used to quantify effects of gas dissolution during the melt extractions and correct the sample [CH4]. Corrected [CH4] is elevated over expected values by up to 132 ppb for most samples, suggesting some in situ CH4 production in ice at this site.

Correlations between chemical profiles (Na, K and Mg) in three 2 m deep pits, separated by hundreds of kilometers on the Ross Ice Shelf, suggest that the passage of major storm systems is often recorded as peaks in cationic concentration in the snow-pack on the Ice Shelf. The magnitude of the peaks appears to be a function of both storm intensity and the extent of sea ice adjoining the Ross Ice Shelf. Samples were collected from a network of 21 shallow pits on the Ice Shelf. Although concentration of impurities in the snow varies as a function of distance from the sea on northern portions of the Ross Ice Shelf, a more complex relationship exists in the interior of the Shelf. A distinct chemical zone south of Roosevelt Island may reflect the presence of a "cyclone graveyard". Non-marine cationic ratios in the southern portion of the Ice Shelf suggest the significant influence of a fractionated marine aerosol and the presence of a second, continental aerosol source. Ionic ratios in rime deposited on the Ross Ice Shelf during periods of fog are interpreted as reflecting the production of fog droplets from the chemically-enriched surface microlayer of the ocean. Diffusionally grown snow crystals also have non-marine ratios. In contrast, snowfall associated with peaks in chemical concentration in particular, and the snow-pack on northern portions of the Ross Ice Shelf in general, yield near-marine ionic ratios. This indicates that the chemistry of snow which is near the coast and snow from major storms is dominated by large droplet riming and the associated presence of a high proportion of sea-salt particles.

We performed microscopic observations and a statistical study of the number, size and shape distribution of clathrates in the GRIP (Greenland Ice Core Project) deep ice core, using 185 samples from a depth range of 1016–3014 m, spanning a period of 6 to >110 ka BP and encompassing the Holocene, Wisconsin and Eemian periods. The number concentration of the clathrates varied considerably with climatic changes. It was possible to detect the rapid climatic oscillations in the last glacial between 13 and 110 ka BP, the Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles, in the number-concentration profile of clathrates. The mean volume of clathrates is less clearly influenced by climatic factors, with a tendency towards greater volumes in warmer periods, but also a growth of clathrates with depth could be detected. This growth rate was calculated to be 3.1 × 10-12 cm3 a-1. The amount of gases captured in the clathrates is estimated to be significantly smaller than the total amount of air determined by gas-concentration measurements. This points to diffusion processes of atmospheric gases within the ice matrix.

Repeated Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observations were carried out at 50 surface markers in the Vostok Subglacial Lake (East Antarctica) region between 2001 and 2011. The horizontal ice flow velocity vectors were derived with accuracies of 1 cm a−1 and 0.5°, representing the first reliable information on ice flow kinematics in the northern part of the lake. Within the lake area, ice flow velocities do not exceed 2 m a−1. The ice flow azimuth is southeast in the southern part of the lake and turns gradually to east-northeast in the northern part. In the northern part, as the ice flow enters the lake at the western shore, the velocity decreases towards the central lake axis, then increases slightly past the central axis. In the southern part, a continued acceleration is observed from the central lake axis across the downstream grounding line. Based on the observed flow velocity vectors and ice thickness data, mean surface accumulation rates are inferred for four surface segments between Ridge B and Vostok Subglacial Lake and show a steady increase towards the north.

At the head of a tunnel driven to bedrock in Blue Glacier, Washington, the mechanism of sliding of the glacier over bedrock has been investigated. This mechanism involves (1) regelation-slip, which operates through the combined action of heat transport and mass transport (liquid and solid) in the immediate neighborhood of the glacier sole; (2) plastic flow, promoted by stress concentrations in the basal ice. We have observed and/or measured the following features of the basal slip process: 1. Slip rate in relation to internal deformation of the ice; 2. Time-variations of the slip rate; 3. Freezing of basal ice to bedrock upon release of overburden pressure; 4. Formation of a regelation layer in the basal ice, and detailed behavior of this layer in relation to bedrock obstacles and to incorporated debris particles; 5. Local separation of ice from bedrock and continuous formation of regelation spicules in the open cavities thus created; 6. Plastic deformation of basal ice as recorded in the warping of foliation planes and of the regelation layer. Simple experiments to test our interpretation of the regelation layer have been carried out, in which regelation flow of solid cubes of different materials frozen into blocks of ice was produced. The field measurements and laboratory results are used to test the theory by Weertman (1957, 1962) of the basal slip mechanism. It is found that the theoretical “controlling obstacle size” and “controlling obstacle spacing” that should correspond to our observations are about an order of magnitude too small. This quantitative failure represents an overemphasis in the theory on the importance of plastic flow as compared to regelation. A new theory has been constructed which gives results in better agreement with observation.

Multi-decadal mass loss estimates are available for few glaciers of Central Asia. On Abramov Glacier (Pamir-Alay, Kyrgyzstan), comprehensive long-term glaciological measurements have been carried out from 1968 to 1999 and re-initiated in 2011. A climatological interpretation of this benchmark glacier in Central Asia requires bridging the gap between historical and renewed measurements. This is achieved here by computing the geodetic mass balance from 1975 to 2015 using previously unreleased Soviet aerial imagery and Pléaides stereo-imagery. During 1975–2015, Abramov Glacier lost 2.2 km2 (8.2%) of its area. The mean annual thickness change was − 0.43 ± 0.14 m a−1 for the period 1975–2015, corresponding to a volume change of − 0.45 ± 0.15 km3. The average specific geodetic mass balance amounts to − 0.38 ± 0.12 m w.e. a−1. The 1975–2015 glacier mass loss lies within the range of glaciological and geodetic mass-balance estimates that were previously published for disparate and shorter time intervals since 1968. This study covers a much longer time period than earlier geodetic estimates and demonstrates the capacity to geodetically constrain glacier change at high spatial resolution in Central Asia using historic aerial imagery and Structure from Motion techniques. Therefore, it could serve as a benchmark for future studies of regional mass change.

Mass budget studies on the glaciers of Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, during the summers of 1959–61, resulted in recognition of five distinct zones in the accumulation area. The 1961 data from these zones of the main glacier investigated are presented. The implication is made that the long-term changes in size, elevation and net accumulation of these zones can be utilized as climatic indicators.

A completely automated instrument for ice-fabric analysis has been built, tested and applied. The analysis of a thin section is performed in two steps. First, the section is loaded into the machine and is automatically imaged in about 16 min. Then, at a later time and convenient location, the grains in the section are identified from a stored image (either automatically or by the user), and the c-axis orientation of each grain is calculated at a rate of 1200 grains h−1. Comparison of automated results with manual Rigsby stage results shows excellent agreement. Diagnostics indicate that the accuracy of the new technique is 0.5° in the c-axis orientation. Two specific applications are demonstrated: (1) the ability to measure internal grain orientations that may reveal internal stress, and (2) the ability to measure very thin thin sections. The latter, combined with the ability to zoom in on small regions of a section, will be useful for examining the fabric of fine-grained (< 1 mm size grains) ice.

In 1972 and 1995, shallow ice temperatures were measured at identical locations and depths on polythermal McCall Glacier, Brooks Range, Alaska, U.S.A. Mean annual ice temperatures at 10 m depth have systematically increased by > 1 K for the ablation area (1400–1900 m), while closer to the firn area, where meltwater percolation and refreezing play a role, they remained approximately unchanged. Interpreting these findings in terms of climate change requires careful consideration of the observed thinning of the glacier, which causes lowering of the surface through an existing vertical temperature gradient. Such temperature gradients can be particularly large in the ablation areas of polythermal glaciers; on McCall Glacier they are on the order of 0.2 K m−1. We also study the evolution of a 75 m deep temperature profile measured at one location in 1972 using a one-dimensional heat-diffusion model. We find that this profile was in approximate equilibrium with the mean surface temperature extrapolated from the 1972 data. Using the observed rate of surface lowering and measured rates of vertical advection, we find that both the measured temperature change and the vertical temperature gradient at 10 m depth can be reproduced only if the mean annual surface temperature on McCall Glacier has increased by 1.1 ± 0.3 K between 1972 and 1995. This result is consistent with the observed trend toward more negative mass balances on the glacier in the 1990s.

We apply the feature-tracking method to L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images to derive detailed motion patterns of glaciers in the Yigong Zangbo basin during summer 2007. The results indicate that the flow patterns are generally constrained by the valley geometry and terrain complexity. The mean velocities of the 12 glaciers were 15–206 m a−1,with a maximum of 423 m a−1 for Glacier No. 5a. The majority of the glaciers exhibited high and low velocities in their upper and lower sections, respectively. The glacier area ranges from 3 to 42 km2. It is found that velocity shows a positive correlation with the glacier area and length. Many small-scale temporal/spatial variations in the glacier flow patterns were observed along the central glacier flowline.

Quantitative measurements of the liquid water phase in a sample of sea ice were made with a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. The measurements are used to compute the phase relationships in sea ice as a function of temperature. A model for sea-water based upon a mixture of seven binary salts is used for these computations. The n.m.r. measurements are related to the solvation water which is associated with each binary salt. This solvation water is bound to the salt in a pseudo-crystalline structure, with the amount of water determined by the eutectic concentration of the salt. The results are given in tabular form and differ somewhat from previously published tables. Two controversial hydrated salts were added to the table, based on the n.m.r. data.

Using an ensemble of close- and long-range remote sensing, lake bathymetry and regional meteorological data, we present a detailed assessment of the geometric changes of El Morado Glacier in the Central Andes of Chile and its adjacent proglacial lake between 1932 and 2019. Overall, the results revealed a period of marked glacier down wasting, with a mean geodetic glacier mass balance of −0.39 ± 0.15 m w.e.a−1 observed for the entire glacier between 1955 and 2015 with an area loss of 40% between 1955 and 2019. We estimate an ice elevation change of −1.00 ± 0.17 m a−1 for the glacier tongue between 1932 and 2019. The increase in the ice thinning rates and area loss during the last decade is coincident with the severe drought in this region (2010–present), which our minimal surface mass-balance model is able to reproduce. As a result of the glacier changes observed, the proglacial lake increased in area substantially between 1955 and 2019, with bathymetry data suggesting a water volume of 3.6 million m3 in 2017. This study highlights the need for further monitoring of glacierised areas in the Central Andes. Such efforts would facilitate a better understanding of the downstream impacts of glacier downwasting.

Glacially induced flow naturally tends to thin and extended till cover through shock formation, even in the absence of longitudinal gradients in the applied stress. Thicker till cover has an increased effective pressure at its surface and base, a lower sliding velocity or deformation rate and above a critical thickness, a decrease in wave velocity with thickness, leading to reverse-facing shocks moving downstream. For sliding and for some theologies of internal deformation, a decrease in sediment flux with thickness occurs, implying backward-moving kinematic waves and reverse-facing, reverse-moving shock.

Downstream-facing shocks are also formed which move upstream if the till is sliding and downstream if the till is deforming internally. Eventually, shocks coalesce, leaving an upstream-lacing shock for sliding and a downstream-facing shock for internal deformation. It is observed that some drumlins have downstream blunt ends only.

Fairly realistic three-dimensional drumlin shapes can be produced from symmetric sediment bodies and barchan shapes can be produced from linear forms perpendicular to the ice-sheet flow.

The fact that viscous theories produce drumlinoid forms suggests that on this scale till behaves viscously and the the lower length scale for drumlins represents the plastic/viscous transition scale.

The deformation and the state of stress in the frontal part of a floating glacier is analysed by a method analogous with the beam theory, applied in engineering practice for determining stresses and deflections of a beans of an elastic material. Very rough approximations are made, the most severe being that of assuming the viscosity of the ice constant. Curves showing the progress in time of the deflections and the stresses in the frontal part of the glacier are given for the case of an infinitely wide glacier. The curves show, that the stresses are greatest at a cross-section situated at a distance of about the thickness of the glacier from the front, and that the stresses are of a magnitude which very likely will lead to fracture, resulting in the formation of an iceberg. It is shown that the magnitude of the icebergs as well as the frequency of the calving is a function of the thickness, the density, and the temperature of the glacier. Observations from nature supporting the theory are described. Finally other calving mechanisms for floating glaciers are briefly discussed.
