The geometry of the vein system in ice has been investigated using photographs of enlarged veins in ice samples that were grown in the laboratory. The veins, which are non-uniform, act as tiny triangular-shaped, water-filled prisms that refract the light passing through them.

The three vein widths in the cross-section of a vein can be deduced from two photographs taken from different directions. The dihedral angle along a given vein edge can be observed directly by viewing it at a node, where four veins meet, from a particular direction. The dihedral angles range from 25° ± 1° to 105° ± 1°. It is shown that the vein cross-section can be constructed, given the three widths of a vein and one of the dihedral angles, providing that the radius of curvature around the vein wallsrv is a constant. This assumption can be checked if the values of at least two of the dihedral angles associated with the vein cross-section are known. Ifrv is a constant, then the solid-liquid interfacial energy ϒsl must be isotropic for the veins in question and any deviations from uniform equilibrium geometry must derive primarily from anisotropy in the grain-boundary energy ϒss. The cross-sections of three veins that meet in a particular node are constructed. The assumption of isotropic ϒsl is found to hold for this node.

Drag at the bed and along the lateral margins are the primary forces resisting flow in outlet glaciers. Simultaneously inferring these parameters is challenging since basal drag and ice viscosity are coupled in the momentum balance, which governs ice flow. We test the ability of adjoint-based inverse methods to infer the slipperiness coefficient in a power-law sliding law and the flow-rate parameter in the constitutive relation for ice using a regularization scheme that includes coefficients weighted by surface strain rates. Using synthetic data with spatial variations in basal drag and ice rheology comparable to those in West Antarctic Ice Streams, we show that this approach allows for more accurate inferences. We apply this method to Bindschadler and MacAyeal Ice Streams in West Antarctica. Our results show relatively soft ice in the shear margins and spatially varying basal drag, with an increase in drag with distance upstream of the grounding line punctuated by localized areas of relatively high drag. We interpret soft ice to reflect a combination of heating through viscous dissipation and changes in the crystalline structure. These results suggest that adjoint-based inverse methods can provide inferences of basal drag and ice rheology when regularization is informed by strain rates.

We present the first fully coupled 3D full-Stokes model of a tidewater glacier, incorporating ice flow, subglacial hydrology, plume-induced frontal melting and calving. We apply the model to Store Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) in west Greenland to simulate a year of high melt (2012) and one of low melt (2017). In terms of modelled hydrology, we find perennial channels extending 5 km inland from the terminus and up to 41 and 29 km inland in summer 2012 and 2017, respectively. We also report a hydrodynamic feedback that suppresses channel growth under thicker ice inland and allows water to be stored in the distributed system. At the terminus, we find hydrodynamic feedbacks exert a major control on calving through their impact on velocity. We show that 2012 marked a year in which Store Glacier developed a fully channelised drainage system, unlike 2017, where it remained only partially developed. This contrast in modelled behaviour indicates that tidewater glaciers can experience a strong hydrological, as well as oceanic, control, which is consistent with observations showing glaciers switching between types of behaviour. The fully coupled nature of the model allows us to demonstrate the likely lack of any hydrological or ice-dynamic memory at Store Glacier.

The analysis of historical avalanche data is important when developing accurate hazard maps. The record of snow-avalanche disasters on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands is incomplete, due to the historical division into periods of Japanese and Russian rule. Here we combine and analyze data from Japanese and Russian sources to reconstruct a continuous record of avalanche catastrophes in the region from 1910 to 2010. Despite the relatively small scale of the majority of catastrophic avalanches, with a total vertical drop < 200 m, we document evidence that places the region among the most avalanche-affected areas in the world. In total, 756 fatalities and > 238 injuries have occurred in 275 incidents over a 100 year period (two-thirds of those killed were Japanese). This death toll is higher than that in Canada, New Zealand or Iceland, or non-recreational fatalities in France. A wave of avalanche disasters (1930s–60s) following intense colonization of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands is evident. Although this ‘wave’ could be considered a local issue of the past, many presently developing countries may face similar situations. The fatality rate has decreased over time, due to social factors, and differs from that of any other region, in its absence of deaths through recreational activities. Although in recent years the fatality rate is lower than that of Iceland or the USA, the per capita avalanche casualty rate on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands remains among the highest in the world.

Effective snow grain radius (re) is mapped at high resolution using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI). The NIR-HSI method can be used to quantify re spatial variability, change in re due to metamorphism, and visualize water percolation in the snowpack. Results are presented for three different laboratory-prepared snow samples (homogeneous, ice lens, fine grains over coarse grains), the sidewalls of which were imaged before and after melt induced by a solar lamp. The spectral reflectance in each ~3 mm pixel was inverted for re using the scaled band area of the ice absorption feature centered at 1030 nm, producing re maps consisting of 54 740 pixels. All snow samples exhibited grain coarsening post-melt as the result of wet snow metamorphism, which is quantified by the change in re distributions from pre- and post-melt images. The NIR-HSI method was compared to re retrievals from a field spectrometer and X-ray computed microtomography (micro-CT), resulting in the spectrometer having the same mean re and micro-CT having 23.9% higher mean re than the hyperspectral imager. As compact hyperspectral imagers become more widely available, this method may be a valuable tool for assessing re spatial variability and snow metamorphism in field and laboratory settings.

The effect of thermal conductivity on ice friction is studied systematically for different metallic slider materials over a wide range of temperatures, and sliding velocities. By thermally insulating the slider with fiberglass, the isolated effect of thermal conductivity on ice friction is investigated. A decrease of the friction coefficient in the boundary friction regime and an earlier onset of the mixed friction regime in terms of sliding velocity are found. Furthermore, the dependence of the ice friction coefficient on sliding velocity is compared for different sliding materials. It is found that the influence and importance of thermal conductivity decreases with increasing sliding velocity.

The controls on rapid surface lake drainage on the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) remain uncertain, making it challenging to incorporate lake drainage into models of GrIS hydrology, and so to determine the ice-dynamic impact of meltwater reaching the ice-sheet bed. Here, we first use a lake area and volume tracking algorithm to identify rapidly draining lakes within West Greenland during summer 2014. Second, we derive hydrological, morphological, glaciological and surface-mass-balance data for various factors that may influence rapid lake drainage. Third, these factors are used within Exploratory Data Analysis to examine existing hypotheses for rapid lake drainage. This involves testing for statistical differences between the rapidly and non-rapidly draining lake types, as well as examining associations between lake size and the potential controlling factors. This study shows that the two lake types are statistically indistinguishable for almost all factors investigated, except lake area. Thus, we are unable to recommend an empirically supported, deterministic alternative to the fracture area threshold parameter for modelling rapid lake drainage within existing surface-hydrology models of the GrIS. However, if improved remotely sensed datasets (e.g. ice-velocity maps, climate model outputs) were included in future research, it may be possible to detect the causes of rapid drainage.

In contrast to the extensive and rapidly growing body of knowledge on permafrost in the Eurasian and North American Arctic and sub-Arctic, little is known about permafrost occurrence in the high mountain regions of the world. Preliminary results of permafrost studies from the Colorado Rocky Mountains are presented.

Above tree line (about 3 500 m) in the Front Range, scattered patches of permafrost begin to occur under wet sites blown free of snow in winter with a mean annual air temperature of about — 1.0°C. At greater elevations, with correspondingly lower mean annual air temperatures (extreme case — 9.0°C and 4400 m), permafrost becomes more extensive and probably exceeds 60 m in thickness. These initial results are derived from a skeleton ground-temperature observation program supplemented by indirect evidence and by data gathered from engineering and mining operations in the high country. It is probable that under the higher summits and ridge crests the alpine equivalent of the continuous zone of Arctic permafrost can be anticipated.

Velocities within an icefall are typically the fastest within a glacier system and experience complex flow. The combination of convergent and fast flow, and steep slope generate a quickly changing and intensely fractured surface. This complicates velocity extraction from repeat satellite images, especially when common pattern matching procedures are used. In this study, we exploit the high temporal revisit of medium-resolution satellite images using a novel image matching technique, ensemble matching, making it possible to generate a high-resolution (30 m) velocity field from high-repeat image sequences despite challenging image conditions. We demonstrate this technique for the first time in the glaciology domain using repeat Sentinel-2 optical data over the famous Khumbu icefall, situated on the southern slopes of Mount Everest. Estimates of velocity go just over 1 m d−1, which is slower than summer velocities from noisy single pair image matching. This icefall is frequently crossed by high-altitude mountaineers who use a route confined by fixed ropes and ladders set out every season. The mountain climbers typically record their trajectory on their personal satellite navigation device. We use such volunteered geographic information to verify our velocity estimates, confirming our underestimation with ensemble matching. Besides unprecedented remotely sensed surface velocities over the icefall, we also note that the generated velocity field can aid with the planning of a safe passage through this icefall.

During the 1984 and 1985 melt seasons, flow velocities and dispersive characteristics of the englacial and subglacial hydraulic system on Storglaciären, a small valley glacier in northern Sweden, were studied with the use of dye-trace tests. Similar tests conducted on one of the two principal pro-glacial streams provided a basis for comparison of the combined englacial-subglacial system with the pro-glacial one. Velocities in the two systems were broadly comparable after compensating for the effect of slope differences. However, velocities in the glacial conduits increased almost linearly with discharge. Analysis suggests that this can be explained by an increase in water pressure in the conduits, combined with a decrease in effective sinuosity, as discharge increases. Dispersivity (the ratio of the dispersion coefficient to the water velocity) in the glacial system is high early in the season but decreases progressively during July. This is believed to reflect a change from an extensively braided to a more integrated drainage system. Dispersivity is only slightly lower in the pro-glacial streams than in the late-season glacial conduits, suggesting similar degrees of braiding. However, retardation of dye due to temporary storage is greater in the glacial conduits. This suggests that the glacial streams have a larger number of stable eddies in which dye can be trapped for extended periods of time.

Three-dimensional geometric descriptions of microstructure are indispensable to obtain the structure–property relationships of snow. Because snow is a random heterogeneous material, it is often helpful to construct stochastic geometric models that can be used to model physical and mechanical properties of snow. In the present study, the Gaussian random field-based stochastic reconstruction of the sieved and sintered dry-snow sample with grain size less than 1 mm is investigated. The one- and two-point correlation functions of the snow samples are used as input for the stochastic snow model. Several statistical descriptors not used as input to the stochastic reconstruction are computed for the real and reconstructed snow to assess the quality of the reconstructed images. For the snow samples and the reconstructed snow microstructure, we also estimate the mechanical properties and the size of the associated representative volume element using numerical simulations as additional assessment of the quality of the reconstructed images. The results indicate that the stochastic reconstruction technique used in this paper is reasonably accurate, robust and highly efficient in numerical computations for the high-density snow samples we consider.

A physically based mathematical model of the coupled lake, lake ice, snow and atmosphere system is developed for studying terrestrial-atmospheric interactions in high-elevation and high-latitude regions. The ability to model lake-ice freeze-up, break-up, total ice thickness and ice type offers the potential to describe the effects of climate change in these regions. Model output is validated against lake-ice observations made during the winter of 1992–93 in Glacier National Park, Montana. U.S.A. The model is driven with observed daily atmospheric forcing of precipitation, wind speed and air temperature. In addition to simulating complete energy-balance components over the annual cycle, model output includes ice freeze-up and break-up dates, and the end-of-season clear ice, snow-ice and total ice depths for two nearby lakes in Glacier National Park, each in a different topographic setting. Modeled ice features are found to agree closely with the lake-ice observations.

Model simulations illustrate the key role that the wind component of the local climatic regime plays on the growth and decay of lake ice. The wind speed affects both the surface temperature and the accumulation of snow on the lake-ice surface. Higher snow accumulations on the lake ice depress the ice surface below the water line, causing the snow to become saturated and leading to the formation of snow-ice deposits. In regions having higher wind speeds, significantly less snow accumulates on the lake-ice surface, thus limiting snow-ice formation. The ice produced by these two different mechanisms has distinctly different optical and radiative properties, and affects the monitoring of frozen lakes using remote-sensing techniques.

We present polar ice core organic matter (OM) fluorescence signatures to reconstruct ancient and modern atmospheric compositions and relate OM signals to past ecological changes. OM composition from three Arctic ice cores (Canada and Greenland) was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy and compared to an Antarctic OM record. Diverse OM was measured in ancient and modern ice in both hemispheres and similarities existed across vast spatiotemporal scales. We determined three OM markers, indicating paleoclimate and modern carbon trends: (i) ‘humic-like’, detected in Holocene ice of more complex and aromatic character, supporting trends of higher plant influences in warmer climates, (ii) monolignol- and non-amino acid-like, describing simple, lignin-like OM precursors ubiquitous in the environment and the microbial degradation products of more complex materials from plants/soils, and (iii) amino acid- and tannin-like, indicating microbial degradation of simple OM chemical species, compared to the other markers. Concentration trends were inferred from fluorescence intensities of individual OM types and related to warmer temperatures. No indicators of freshly produced OM by microbes were detected; signals were interpreted as materials externally produced from the ice and transported to polar regions. This marks the first global comparison of atmospheric reconstructions from OM across vast spatiotemporal scales.

Radio-glaciological parameters from the Moore’s Bay region of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, have been measured. The thickness of the ice shelf in Moore’s Bay was measured from reflection times of radio-frequency pulses propagating vertically through the shelf and reflecting from the ocean, and is found to be 576 ± 8 m. Introducing a baseline of 543 ± 7m between radio transmitter and receiver allowed the computation of the basal reflection coefficient, R, separately from englacial loss. The depth-averaged attenuation length of the ice column, 〈L〉 is shown to depend linearly on frequency. The best fit (95% confidence level) is 〈L(ν)〉= (460±20) − (180±40)ν m (20 dB km−1), for the frequencies ν = [0.100–0.850] GHz, assuming no reflection loss. The mean electric-field reflection coefficient is (1.7 dB reflection loss) across [0.100–0.850] GHz, and is used to correct the attenuation length. Finally, the reflected power rotated into the orthogonal antenna polarization is <5% below 0.400 GHz, compatible with air propagation. The results imply that Moore’s Bay serves as an appropriate medium for the ARIANNA high-energy neutrino detector.

The resistance to sliding and the extent of till deformation beneath soft-bedded glaciers depend on the spatially averaged level of effective stress , which is controlled by the distribution of water pressure at the bed. Major subglacial conduits that facilitate large-scale water transport are expected to be predominantly aligned with the direction of maximum hydraulic gradient, which is normally parallel to the slope of the glacier surface. When the basal heat flow promotes net melting or freezing, seepage transport can enable water exchange between these conduits and the rest of the basal surface area. For a simple glacier geometry with subglacial conduits that are aligned parallel to a uniform slope, the seepage transport is driven primarily by gradients in effective stress. Balance equations determine how varies with conduit spacing and the heat-flow regime. Considerations of thermodynamic equilibrium require that ice penetrates the pore space at high effective stress. Even when the glacier base experiences net melting, for a given heat-flow regime there are limits on the conduit spacing that can be attained before a finite till layer becomes partially frozen throughout. During net freezing, the resistance to flow through partially frozen sediments limits the steady-state conduit spacing. The partially frozen zone can actually be restricted to smaller thicknesses when the freezing rate is greater.

This paper describes the physical and chemical properties of the snow- pack on John Evans Glacier, Ellesmere Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and investigates the controls on snowpack solute concentrations and atmospheric deposition. The snowpack contains three layers that are traceable across the whole glacier. These represent fall accumulation that has been metamorphosed to depth hoar, winter accumulation mixed with snow reworked by wind from the underlying depth hoar, and spring accumulation mixed with wind-reworked snow. The seasonal cycle in snow chemistry closely reflects changes in the composition of the atmospheric aerosol at Alert, with some modification of NO3− concentrations by post-depositional processes. Mean water-weighted solute concentrations in the snowpack are largely independent of accumulation, while atmospheric deposition tends to increase with accumulation. This suggests that, for most species, wet deposition is the dominant depositional process throughout the year. However, concentrations of Ca2+ and K+ increase with both accumulation and elevation, implying an enhanced input from dry deposition of soil dust above 800 m elevation. Concentrations of SO42− are inversely related to accumulation, especially in the winter layer, suggesting a significant input from non-precipitating events, such as dry deposition or riming, during this period of very limited snowfall.

Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (~80%) and lateral (~20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, indicating the bed is at or close to the pressure-melting temperature. There is a significant component of driving stress in the across-flow direction resulting in nonzero basal drag in that direction. This is an unrealistic result and we propose that there are spatial variations of bed features resulting in small-scale flow disturbances. The grounding line of Byrd Glacier is located in a region where the bed slopes upward. Nevertheless, despite a 10% increase in ice discharge between December 2005 and February 2007, following drainage of two subglacial lakes in the catchment area, the position of the grounding line has not retreated significantly and the glacier has decelerated since then. During the speed-up event, partitioning of flow resistance did not change, suggesting the increase in velocity was caused by a temporary decrease in basal effective pressure.

Snow avalanches often form levees and en-echelon shear planes in the run-out zone. We describe the formation of these depositional structures using a simple model that accounts for the role of granular fluctuations in avalanche motion. A mathematical feature of this model is the existence of a bifurcation saddle point, describing how granular fluctuations control the avalanche velocity in the runout zone. The saddle point discriminates between a flowing and stopping regime and defines the physical boundary between the flow and non-flow regions of the avalanche, i.e. the location of shear planes in the avalanche deposits. The formation of a shear plane depends on the interplay between terrain slope and avalanche mass flux, which varies from avalanche head to tail. Levees can form immediately at the avalanche front or, for steep slopes and low mass fluxes, at the avalanche tail. At ravine and gully shoulders the mass flux is restricted, thus initiating levee formation. We find that the levee lines are parallel to the flow direction when the mass flux is constant; en-echelon shear lines occur when the mass flux is decreasing. We test the model using several case studies where we have accurate laser scans of avalanche deposits. Our results suggest that avalanche flow parameters can be determined from simple levee measurements or, conversely, formation of levees and flow fingers can be predicted once the parameters governing the granular fluctuations are known.

The interaction between ice sheets and the rest of the climate system at long time-scales is not well understood, and studies of the ice ages typically employ simplified parameterizations of the climate forcing on an ice sheet. It is important therefore to understand how an ice sheet responds to climate forcing, and whether the reduced approaches used in modeling studies are capable of providing robust and realistic answers. This work focuses on the accumulation distribution, and in particular considers what features of the accumulation pattern are necessary to model the steady-state response of an ice sheet. We examine the response of a model of the Greenland ice sheet to a variety of accumulation distributions, both observational datasets and simplified parameterizations. The predicted shape of the ice sheet is found to be quite insensitive to changes in the accumulation. The model only differs significantly from the observed ice sheet for a spatially uniform accumulation rate, and the most important factor for the successful simulation of the ice sheet’s shape is that the accumulation decreases with height according to the ability of the atmosphere to hold moisture. However, the internal ice dynamics strongly reflects the influence of the atmospheric circulation on the accumulation distribution.

Ice crystal orientation fabric data from ice cores contain important information concerning the internal structure and the flow behaviour of ice sheets. When ice cores are recovered from the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, crystal orientation measurements are performed immediately to obtain fundamental physical property information. In the past, we have measured the c-axis orientation of ice crystals by a manual optical method using a universal stage. This method is very time-consuming, involving tedious work in a cold laboratory. Recently, automated systems have been developed that enable measurement of c-axis orientation, grain size and other microstructures. However, in order to detect the full crystal orientation of an ice crystal, we also need information on its a-axis orientation. A variety of other crystal orientation measurement methods have previously been discussed, but some shortcomings for ice-core studies cannot be neglected. We have developed a crystal-orientation analysing device using the Laue X-ray diffraction method. As this device can measure the orientations of all crystal axes with high accuracy, it is possible to obtain new microstructure information on natural ice crystals. For the first time, we are able to quantify very low subgrain misorientation angles in polar ice-core samples, allowing us to investigate micro-deformation features of individual crystals. Here we discuss the analysis process, which is customized to measure standard ice thin sections, and show preliminary results.
