During the LeadEx main field experiment, held in April 1992 in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, a number of large ice stalactites were observed growing under young lead ice. Formation of the stalactites was associated with rafting of the thin, highly saline ice. The rafting caused the brine to drain rapidly from the ice at a temperature well below the freezing point of the surrounding water, which in turn caused ice to form in a hollow cylinder around the brine plume. Within a 15 h period after the rafting event, the stalactites, which were located approximately 10 m apart in a line along the upwind edge of a 150 m wide lead, had grown to a length of 2 m. A detailed structural analysis of the upper part of one of these stalactites revealed that the interior channel, down which the brine flowed, was bounded by a zone of frazil ice that developed into a shell of columnar ice. The growth of the columnar ice was directed radially outward and the c axes of these crystals were oriented perpendicular to their growth direction. Development of the stalactites illustrates the impact ice deformation can have on the process of brine rejection in freezing leads and potentially on the thermohaline structure of the upper ocean in the immediate vicinity of the lead.

Recent studies have reported a shift in the Arctic sea ice to a younger state after around 2007. This study reveals that this shift can be primarily attributed to a stepwise-type reduction in the extent of 4 years or older (4+ year) ice and its linked survivability. After this shift, the fraction of 4+ year ice extent relative to the total ice changed from 30.5 to 10.0%. Sea-ice survivability can serve as a key indicator of sea-ice persistence in response to other factors. We demonstrate that the decrease of 4+ year ice is controlled by the decrease of its linked survivability in a non-linear manner, signifying small alterations in the survivability can result in relatively large changes in the extent of 4+ year ice. The decrease in survivability is affected by both winter and summer processes. Summer melting contributed the most, while the contribution of the export through Fram Strait was minor. However, the significant rise in residual loss during the growth season suggests that other winter processes may also have played an important role.

The sensitivity of glacier mass balance to temperature and precipitation variations is crucial for informing models that simulate glaciers’ response to climate change. In this study, we simulate the glacier-wide mass balance of Mera Glacier with a surface energy-balance model, driven by in situ meteorological data, from 2016 to 2020. The analysis of the share of the energy fluxes of the glacier shows the radiative fluxes account for almost all the energy available during the melt season (May–October). However, turbulent fluxes are significant outside the monsoon (June–September). On an annual scale, melt is the dominant mass flux at all elevations, but 44% of the melt refreezes across the glacier. By reshuffling the available observations, we create 180 synthetic series of hourly meteorological forcings to force the model over a wide range of plausible climate conditions. A +1 (−1)°C change in temperature results in a −0.75 ± 0.17 (+0.93 ± 0.18) m w.e. change in glacier-wide mass balance and a +20 (−20)% change in precipitation results in a +0.52 ± 0.10 (−0.60 ± 0.11) m w.e. change. Our study highlights the need for physical-based approaches to produce consistent forcing datasets, and calls for more meteorological and glaciological measurements in High Mountain Asia.

Ablation polygons on snow have been examined, mainly in the Tatra Mountains, both by field observation and by experiment. The polygons are initiated under peculiar climatic conditions—mostly when the melting of snow is somewhat slow and is accompanied simultaneously by the metamorphism of snow. A thick snow cover appears to be a prerequisite of this process. A detailed analysis of the problem of dirt concentration in snow, due to ablation, reveals the major role played by adhesion in this process. The concentration of dirt is due to lateral movement of the material and this is intrinsically related to the micro-elements of the snow surface.

The origin and development of ablation polygons do not depend on the presence of dirt in the snow; on the contrary, the process of dirt concentration and its effects are dependent on the evolution of polygonal forms.

An ice cover impinging on a long straight structure is assumed to be under a condition of plane strain. A technique is described for performing plane-strain compression tests, and results are presented for the strain-rate dependence of strength. The plane-strain compressive strength of ice having anisotropic structure (columnar-grained ice) is at least two and a half times the uniaxial compressive strength, whereas the plane-strain compressive strength of ice having an isotropic structure (granular-snow ice) is at most 25% greater than the uniaxial case. The greater plane-strain compressive strength of columnar grained ice when the loading and confining directions are in the plane of the ice cover, can be attributed to its anisotropic structure, which leads to a different failure mechanism for the plane-strain case.

A consideration of possible expressions for the number and size of bonds intersected by a potential failure surface leads to the following expression for the strength of snow, σf, which is age-hardening at a constant porosity n:

where σi is the strength of ice, tf is the time at failure, α is a parameter specifically related to the mechanism of bonding, and ω is a temperature-dependent parameter. Allowing tf to become infinite provides the envelope of maximum strength for fully age-hardened snow at any porosity n.

Total transmission, absorption, and reflection of solar radiation have been determined for bare blue and white ice between 0.02 and 0.8 m in thickness as well as for blue ice covered with 0.01 to 0.4 m of dry packed snow. The calculations were performed at 45 wavelengths between 400 nm and 2150 nm using a two-stream model to account for the finite thickness of the ice and snow layers. Total radiative energies were found by numerical integration over wavelength. The results were compared with corresponding calculations for optically thick ice of the same types. Albedos increase from about 0.05 for open water to a maximum of 0.9 for thick snow. For 0.8 m blue and white ice, predicted albedos on cloudy days are 0.28 and 0.67 respectively. Under clear skies these albedos decrease by 10 to 30%. Total transmission through thin ice (less than 0.8 m) is from 50% to 300% greater than is predicted by Beer’s law depending on ice type and cloud cover. Radiative energy absorption at the surface is independent of thickness, but significant departures from Beer’s law of as much as 200% are evident in all cases below a depth of 2.5 mm. A parameterization scheme is presented for incorporating these results into heat- and mass- balance studies.

Deep coring in polar ice sheets has only located the well-known recrystallized ice with a fabric peculiar to tertiary dislocation creep in bottom layers. At lesser depths, anisotropic ice with steady grain-sizes is found; secondary dislocation creep is the dominant process and an anisotropic third-power relation viscosity should ensue. In this paper, ices from the surface down to several hundred metres in depth are considered. Their grain-size increases with time owing to free energy at grain boundaries. This continuous boundary migration appears to be a much more efficient process for relative displacements of the grains than boundary sliding accommodated by diffusional processes between grains of constant size. Locally heterogeneous superplastic deformation leading to moderate viscosities is therefore expected. This deformation mechanism can explain the field data which seem to show a viscosity more than one order of magnitude lower than would result from Nabarro–Herring creep or secondary dislocation creep.

Ice accretion on a non-rotating cylinder was studied under icing conditions involving a wet-growth (glaze) process. Experiments were performed in an outdoor wind tunnel designed for icing studies. In this paper, the experimental method is introduced and the characteristics of form, size, and time development of deposits are given. In terms of freezing conditions, these characteristics were found to be very complex, in which all the external effects: air temperature, wind conditions, liquid water content in the air, and accretion time, are of the same order of importance. In a wet-growth process there exists above the icing surface a water film, the behaviour and dynamics of which are affected by various variables. The water film seems to play an important role in the wet-growth icing.

The speed of Ice Stream B, Antarctica, was measured twice a day-over a 1 month study period, and found to be steady at about the ±3½% level, the sensitivity of the measurements. The vertical strain was measured at three sites over a 1 year period at 1 h intervals with sensitivities of 2 or 0.2 ppm. The strain rate varied on all time-scales. Events of high strain rate were observed, but never at more than one site at a time. They can probably be understood in terms of local modification of the strain field associated with crevassing. Diurnal variation in strain rate was observed at one and possibly two sites during two summers. The seismicity was measured at all three sites, and diurnal and seasonal variations were prominent at all, the seismicity being much more intense in winter. Several possible causes of the diurnal variations in strain and seismicity are considered: thermal and atmospheric effects, and the effects of tides in the Ross Sea.

The Digital Thermo-Resistograph is a portable microprocessor-based data-probe system for quick and accurate field collection of snow-cover strength. This was accomplished by constructing a probe with a load cell, a small snow platform for probe-position information, and a Z-80 microprocessor-based data acquisition system. A 64 × 240 dot matrix LCD graphic display unit is used to show immediately complete strength profiles in the field. Sufficient memory for the storage of 25 profiles is provided. Temperature and temperature-gradient collection is also planned as a part of the instrument but as yet this work has not been completed.

The results of winter 1984 field tests are presented. The Digital Thermo-Resistograph proved to be fast and reliable in collecting snow-strength information. Comparisons with the ram penetrometer are shown and suggestions for future developments are discussed.

The heat exchange takes place in two stages: (i) the atmospheric heat causes melting of the whole of the annual snow accumulation and leads to the formation of slush rivers; (ii) some of the melt water refreezes to form a new layer of ice superimposed on the original ice, which is warmed by the latent heat yielded to it. A theoretical estimate of the rate of formation of the superimposed ice, and of the temperature change in the original ice, is given, which agrees reasonably with the actual measurements. A rough measurement of the melt water run-off checks with the observations of ablation and superimposed ice. The total energy available for melting is estimated approximately from the meteorological observations; it underestimates the actual ablation. About 70 per cent of the total ablation energy (47 cm. water, total ablation) is disposed of as melt water that is discharged from the ice cap surface; the remainder goes as sensible heat to the low temperature ice.

A four stream discrete-ordinates photometric model including both anisotropic scattering and refraction at the boundaries is presented which treats the case of a floating ice slab. The effects of refraction and reflection on the redistribution of the incident radiation field as it enters the ice are examined in detail. Using one- and two-layer models, theoretical albedos and transmittances are compared to values measured in the laboratory for thin salt ice. With an experimentally determined three-parameter Henyey–Greenstein phase function, comparisons at 650 nm yield single-scattering albedos ranging from 0.95 to 0.9997. The models are then used to compare the effects of diffuse and direct-beam incident radiation, to investigate the dependence of spectral albedo and transmittance on ice thickness, and to determine the influence of very cold and melted surface layers.

Glacial hydraulic tremor (GHT) can be monitored to observe changes in location and distribution of water flow beneath glacial ice, allowing the spatiotemporal evolution of subglacial hydrology to be studied continuously and remotely. We use frequency-dependent polarization analysis (FDPA) to classify types of GHT and assess its spatio-temporal extent beneath Rhonegletscher, Switzerland, in a continuous seismic record through 2018 and 2019 at three ice-proximal bedrock-based seismometers. We determine the frequency bands composing the GHT and calculate back azimuth angles pointing to a previously known subglacial channel. We also inspect the relationship between GHT seismic power and water discharge from the glacier to compare daily and seasonal shifts with the observed GHT. We observed the seasonal shift from a distributed system to a channelized system, and our dataset allowed comparison of channel locations within and across seasons, with implications for sediment evacuation and bed erosion. The successful use of this method to assess GHT previously on Taku glacier (the methods of which this project follows) and now Rhonegletscher shows that existing ice-proximal passive seismic installations can be used to easily and continuously monitor subglacial hydraulic activity.

Natural ice contains approximately 100 p.p.m. (by weight) of enclosed air. This air is mainly located in bubbles. Carbon dioxide is an exception. We estimate the fraction of CO2 present in bubbles to be only about 20%. The remaining part is dissolved in the ice. Measurements of the CO2 content of ice samples from temperate and cold glacier ice as well as of freshly fallen snow and of a laboratory-grown single crystal are presented. Glaciological implications are discussed.
