This paper considers the initial stage of radiatively driven convection, when the perturbations from a quiescent but time-dependent background state are small. Radiation intensity is assumed to decay exponentially away from the surface, and we consider parameter regimes in which the depth of the water is greater than the decay scale of $e$ of the radiation intensity. Both time-independent and time-periodic radiation are considered. In both cases, the background temperature profile of the water column is time-dependent. A linear analysis of the system is performed based on these time-dependent profiles. We find that the perturbations grow in time according to $\exp [(\sigma (t) t)]$, where $\sigma (t)$ is a time-dependent growth rate. An appropriately defined Reynolds number is the primary dimensionless number characterising the system, determining the wavelength, vertical structure and growth rate of the perturbations. Simulations using a Boussinesq model (the Stratified Ocean Model with Adaptive Refinement) confirm the linear analysis.

Recent numerical studies have shown that forced, statistically isotropic turbulence develops a ‘thermal-equilibrium’ spectrum, $\mathcal {E}(k) \propto k^2$, at large scales. This behaviour presents a puzzle, as it appears to imply the growth of a non-zero Saffman integral, which would require the longitudinal velocity correlation function, $\chi (r)$, to satisfy $\chi (r\to \infty )\propto r^{-3}$. As is well known, the Saffman integral is an invariant of decaying turbulence, precisely because non-local interactions (i.e. interactions via exchange of pressure waves) are too weak to generate such correlations. Subject to certain restrictions on the nature of the forcing, we argue that the same should be true for forced turbulence. We show that long-range correlations and a $k^2$ spectrum arise as a result of the turbulent diffusion of linear momentum, and extend only up to a maximum scale that grows slowly with time. This picture has a number of interesting consequences. First, if the forcing generates eddies with significant linear momentum (as in so-called Saffman turbulence), a thermal spectrum is not reached – instead, a shallower spectrum develops. Secondly, the energy of turbulence that is forced for a while and then allowed to decay obeys Saffman's decay laws for a period that is much longer than the duration of the forcing stage.

We use experiments to study the evolution of bubble clusters in a swarm of freely rising, deformable bubbles. A new machine learning-aided algorithm allows us to identify and track bubbles in clusters and measure the cluster lifetimes. The results indicate that contamination in the carrier liquid can enhance the formation of bubble clusters and prolong the cluster lifetimes. The mean bubble rise velocities conditioned on the bubble cluster size are also explored, and we find a positive correlation between the cluster size and the rise speed of the bubbles in the cluster, with clustered bubbles rising up to $20\,\%$ faster than unclustered bubbles.

A multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based model is presented in this study to reconstruct flow fields from noisy data. A combination of reinforcement learning with pixel-wise rewards, physical constraints represented by the momentum equation and the pressure Poisson equation, and the known boundary conditions is used to build a physics-constrained deep reinforcement learning (PCDRL) model that can be trained without the target training data. In the PCDRL model, each agent corresponds to a point in the flow field and learns an optimal strategy for choosing pre-defined actions. The proposed model is efficient considering the visualisation of the action map and the interpretation of the model operation. The performance of the model is tested by using direct numerical simulation-based synthetic noisy data and experimental data obtained by particle image velocimetry. Qualitative and quantitative results show that the model can reconstruct the flow fields and reproduce the statistics and the spectral content with commendable accuracy. Furthermore, the dominant coherent structures of the flow fields can be recovered by the flow fields obtained from the model when they are analysed using proper orthogonal decomposition and dynamic mode decomposition. This study demonstrates that the combination of DRL-based models and the known physics of the flow fields can potentially help solve complex flow reconstruction problems, which can result in a remarkable reduction in the experimental and computational costs.

We investigate the influence of rotation on the onset and saturation of the Faraday instability in a vertically oscillating two-layer miscible fluid using a theoretical model and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Our analytical approach utilizes Floquet analysis to solve a set of the Mathieu equations obtained from the linear stability analysis. The solution of the Mathieu equations comprises stable and harmonic, and subharmonic unstable regions in a three-dimensional stability diagram. We find that the Coriolis force delays the onset of the subharmonic instability responsible for the growth of the mixing zone size at lower forcing amplitudes. However, at higher forcing amplitudes, the flow is energetic enough to mitigate the instability delaying effect of rotation, and the evolution of the mixing zone size is similar in both rotating and non-rotating environments. These results are corroborated by DNS at different Coriolis frequencies and forcing amplitudes. We also observe that for $(\,f/\omega )^2<0.25$, where $f$ is the Coriolis frequency, and $\omega$ is the forcing frequency, the instability and the turbulent mixing zone size-$L$ saturates. When $(\,f/\omega )^2\geq 0.25$, the turbulent mixing zone size-$L$ never saturates and continues to grow.

Inviscid, incompressible liquid is released from rest by a sudden dam break, accelerating under gravity over a uniformly sloping impermeable plane bed. The liquid flows downhill or up a beach. A linearised model is derived from Euler's equations for the early stage of motion, of duration $2\sqrt {H/g}$, where H is the depth scale and $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity. Initial pressure and acceleration fields are calculated in closed form, first for an isosceles right-angled triangle on a slope of $45^{\circ }$. Second, the triangle belongs to a class of finite-domain solutions with a curved front face. Third, an unbounded domain is treated, with a curved face resembling a steep-fronted breaking water wave flowing up a beach. The fluid goes uphill due to a nearshore pressure gradient. In all cases the free-surface-bed contact point is the most accelerated particle, exceeding the acceleration due to gravity. Physical consequences are discussed, and the pressure approximation of shallow water theory is found poor during this early stage, near the steep free surface exposed by a dam break.

We introduce a projection-based model reduction method that systematically accounts for nonlinear interactions between the resolved and unresolved scales of the flow in a low-dimensional dynamical systems model. The proposed method uses a separation of time scales between the resolved and subscale variables to derive a reduced-order model with cubic closure terms for the truncated modes, generalizing the classic Stuart–Landau equation. The leading-order cubic terms are determined by averaging out fast variables through a perturbation series approximation of the action of a stochastic Koopman operator. We show analytically that this multiscale closure model can capture both the effects of mean-flow deformation and the energy cascade before demonstrating improved stability and accuracy in models of chaotic lid-driven cavity flow and vortex pairing in a mixing layer. This approach to closure modelling establishes a general theory for the origin and role of cubic nonlinearities in low-dimensional models of incompressible flows.

An equation for the evolution of mean kinetic energy, $E$, in a two-dimensional (2-D) or 3-D Rayleigh–Bénard system with domain height $L$ is derived. Assuming classical Nusselt-number scaling, $Nu \sim Ra^{1/3}$, and that mean enstrophy, in the absence of a downscale energy cascade, scales as $\sim E/L^2$, we find that the Reynolds number scales as $Re \sim Pr^{-1}Ra^{2/3}$ in the 2-D system, where $Ra$ is the Rayleigh number and $Pr$ the Prandtl number. Using the evolution equation and the Reynolds-number scaling, it is shown that $\tilde {\tau } \gtrsim Pr^{-1/2}Ra^{1/2}$, where $\tilde {\tau }$ is the non-dimensional convergence time scale. For the 3-D system, we make the estimate $\tilde {\tau } \gtrsim Ra^{1/6}$ for $Pr = 1$. It is estimated that the total computational cost of reaching the high $Ra$ limit in a simulation is comparable between two and three dimensions. The predictions are compared with data from direct numerical simulations.

This paper revisits the study by Bailey et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 615, 2008, pp. 121–138), adopting a higher-fidelity calibration approach to reveal subtle flow variations with Reynolds numbers that were not discernible previously. The paper aims therefore to provide insights into the characteristics of azimuthal and streamwise pipe flow structures adopting two-point joint statistics and spectral analysis for shear Reynolds numbers in the range $2\times {10^3}\le {Re_\tau }\le {16\times {10^3}}$, where ${Re_\tau }$ is based on the wall friction velocity $u_{\tau }$, the pipe radius $R$, and the fluid kinematic viscosity $\nu$. The streamwise velocity fluctuations were measured at four wall-normal locations, $0.1\le {x_{{2}}/R}\le {0.7}$, covering the logarithmic and core regions of fully developed turbulent pipe flow based on 35–41 azimuthal probe separations using, simultaneously, two single hot-wire probes. A unique in situ calibration approach for both probes was adopted where a potential flow was insured, resulting in consistent and precise pipe flow data. The azimuthal velocity correlation, the cross-power spectral density and the coherence function of the streamwise velocity fluctuations are discussed, revealing a clear dependence of the azimuthal scales of the large and very large flow motions on the wall-normal location, the azimuthal separation, the streamwise wavenumber and the Reynolds number. Along the logarithmic region, a linear growth of the azimuthal scales of the large- and very-large-scale structures was observed; however, they do scale nonlinearly and reach their maximum sizes in the core region, i.e. near the centreline of the pipe. Additionally, the streamwise very-large- and large-scale motions were evaluated using the premultiplied energy spectra, showing wavelengths ${\approx }{18R}$ and ${\approx }{3R}$ for ${Re_{\tau }}\approx {16\times {10^3}}$ at half of the pipe radius, respectively.

The interaction of small-scale vortical structures with the surrounding fluid are studied using a fully resolved three-dimensional experimental data set of homogeneous turbulence measured at the centre of a von Kármán mixing flow facility and a direct numerical simulation (DNS) data set of forced isotropic turbulence. To identify the small-scale vortices and their boundaries, an objective observer-independent definition was implemented to avoid arbitrariness and is the first implementation applied to experimental measurements of small-scale turbulence. Volume-averaged and conditional statistics are presented to demonstrate consistency between the experimental and DNS data sets. To examine the interaction of the structures with the surrounding flow field, we examine the flow across the boundary of vortex structures by adopting a similar methodological approach to that used to investigate the local entrainment and detrainment across the turbulent–non-turbulent interface. The probability density function (p.d.f.) of entrainment velocity conditioned on the vortex boundary exhibited a non-Gaussian distribution that skewed slightly in favour of entrainment and is remarkably similar to the p.d.f.s of entrainment velocity observed in boundary layers and jets. We analyse the enstrophy transport equation conditioned on radial and axial coordinates of the vortices to quantify the inviscid and viscous components of the entrainment/detrainment process. A comparison with Burgers vortices is made and it is found that the Burgers vortex model captures the vortex structure average size and the mechanisms of enstrophy transport in the radial direction, but is unable to capture local statistics and describe the governing physics along the axes of the vortices.

Bathymetry is an important factor affecting wave propagation in coastal environments but is often challenging to measure in practice. We propose a method for inferring coastal bathymetry from spatial variations in surface waves by combining a high-order spectral method for wave simulation and an adjoint-based variational data assimilation method. Recursion-formed adjoint equations are derived to obtain the sensitivity of the wave surface elevation to the underlying bottom topography to any desired order of nonlinear perturbation. We also develop a multiscale optimisation method to eliminate spurious high-wavenumber fluctuations in the reconstructed bathymetry data caused by sensitivity variations over the different length scales of surface waves. The proposed bottom detection method is validated with a realistic coastal wave environment involving complex two-dimensional bathymetry features, non-periodic incident waves and nonlinear broadband multidirectional waves. In numerical experiments at both laboratory and field scales, the bathymetry reconstructed from our method agrees well with the ground truth. We also show that our method is robust against imperfect surface wave data in the presence of limited sampling frequency and noise.

We present results for Newtonian laminar miscible displacement flows in a narrow, vertical, eccentric annulus, obtained from experiments carried out in a scaled laboratory set-up. These are compared with two computational models introduced in Part 1, Zhang & Frigaard (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A732). Quite close matches have been found for different approaches, regarding the overall evolving displacement process: front shape, dispersion levels and front velocities. Standardized criteria have been established to identify whether a flow has steady/unsteady and dispersive/non-dispersive displacement front, applicable to both concentric and eccentric annuli. Three characteristic flows have been observed, unsteady and dispersive, dispersive with steady front, and non-dispersive with steady front. Through both qualitative and quantitative studies, the importance of the buoyancy number has been established: it both restrains dispersion on the annular gap scale and induces secondary flows in the azimuthal direction.

The large-eddy simulation technique was used to investigate the dynamics of unsteady flow separation on a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The unsteadiness was generated by imposing an oscillating, wall-normal velocity profile at the top of the computational domain, and a range of reduced frequencies ($k$), from a very rapid flutter-like motion to a slow quasi-steady oscillation, was studied. Ambrogi et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 945, 2022, A10) showed that the reduced frequency greatly affects the transient separation process, and at a frequency $k=1$, the separation region became unstable and was advected periodically out of the domain. In this paper, we discuss the causes of the observed advection process and the effects of the unsteadiness on the second moments. The time evolution of turbulent kinetic energy, for instance, reveals that an advection-like phenomenon is also present at a very low reduced frequency, but its dynamic behaviour is completely different from that of the intermediate frequency ($k=1$). At the intermediate frequency the entire recirculation region is advected downstream, keeping its shape. The advected structure is rotational in nature, and moves at constant speed. In contrast, in the low-frequency case the advected fluid originates at the reattachment point, and the structure is shear-dominated. Particle pathlines reflect the fact that the flow at the low frequency is quasi-steady-state, but show peculiar differences at the intermediate frequency, in which the flow response to the freestream forcing depends on the particle positions in the wall-normal direction.

It is theoretically known that an isotropic chemically active particle in an unbounded solution undergoes symmetry breaking when the intrinsic Péclet number ${{Pe}}$ exceeds a finite critical value (Michelin et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 25, 2013, 061701). At that value, a transition takes place from a stationary state to spontaneous motion. In two dimensions, where no stationary state is possible in an unbounded domain, a linear stability analysis in a large bounded domain (Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 123, 2019, 238004) reveals that the critical ${{Pe}}$ value slowly diminishes as the domain size increases. Motivated by these findings, we here consider an unbounded domain from the outset, addressing the two-dimensional problem of steady self-propulsion with a focus on the limit ${{Pe}}\ll 1$. This singular limit is handled using matched asymptotic expansions, conceptually decomposing the fluid domain into a particle-scale region, where the leading-order solute transport is diffusive, and a remote region, where diffusion and advection are comparable. The expansion parameter is provided by the product of ${{Pe}}$ and $U$, the unknown particle speed (normalised by the standard autophoretic scale). The problem is unconventional in that the scaling of $U$ with ${{Pe}}$ must be determined in the course of the perturbation analysis. The resulting approximation, $U=4\exp ({-2/{Pe}-\gamma _{E}-1})/{{Pe}}$ ($\gamma _{E}$ being the Euler–Mascheroni constant), is in remarkable agreement with the numerical predictions of Hu et al. in the common interval of validity.

The present work is devoted to the analysis of drop impact on a deep liquid pool, focusing on the high-energy splashing regimes caused by large raindrops at high velocities. Such cases are characterized by short time scales and complex mechanisms, thus they have received very little attention until now. The BASILISK open-source solver is used to perform three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The capabilities of octree adaptive mesh refinement techniques enable capturing of the small-scale features of the flow, while the volume of fluid approach combined with a balanced-force surface-tension calculation is applied to advect the volume fraction of the liquids and reconstruct the interfaces. The numerical results compare well with experimental visualizations: both the evolution of crown and cavity, the emanation of ligaments, the formation of bubble canopy and the growth of a downward-moving spiral jet that pierces through the cavity bottom, are correctly reproduced. Reliable quantitative agreements are also obtained regarding the time evolution of rim positions, cavity dimensions and droplet distributions through an observation window. Furthermore, simulation gives access to various aspects of the internal flows, which allows us to better explain the observed physical phenomena. Details of the early-time dynamics of bubble ring entrapment and splashing performance, the formation/collapse of bubble canopy and the spreading of drop liquid are discussed. The statistics of droplet size show the bimodal distribution in time, corroborating distinct primary mechanisms of droplet production at different stages.

This article presents a first-principles model for electrosprays operating in the ion emission regime. The model considers ion emission from a Taylor cone anchored on a tubular emitter, including the fluid dynamics as well as the electrostatic interaction between the liquid, the electrodes and the ion beam. The model accounts for the self-heating of the liquid due to ohmic and viscous dissipation, and the associated variation of the viscosity and electrical conductivity with temperature. The numerical solution reproduces the experimental phenomenology of the ion emission regime (e.g. current levels, the high sensitivity to the ion solvation energy, the proportionality between the emitted current and emitter potential, etc.), and other aspects of the underlying physics such as the coupling between ion emission and self-heating of the liquid. The numerical solution is also used to validate a simpler analytical model that yields scaling laws for the emitted current, and for the characteristic length, current density and electric field of the emission region. The analytical model also provides liquid-dependent criteria for the onset of the ion emission regime.

We construct reduced-order models of aeroacoustic sources for single and twin subsonic jets ($M_j=0.9$, $Re=3600$), with the goal of accurately recovering the far-field sound over a wide band of frequencies $St=[0.07,1.0]$ and directivity angles $\phi = [30^{\circ },120^{\circ }]$ within a subdecibel level accuracy. These models are realized via combining spatio-temporally coherent spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) modes extracted directly from Lighthill's stress tensor, itself calculated using large-eddy simulation (LES). We consider two sets of twin subsonic jets of diameter $D$ each, with spacings of $0.1D$ and $1D$, where the jets merge upstream and downstream of breakdown, respectively. The closely spaced twin jet decays the slowest due to reduced turbulent stresses which are, however, more broadband due to early merging. Such jets show strong shielding in the plane of jets, especially at shallow directivity angles where sound levels may drop below that of the single jet. The farther spaced twin jets have dynamics more akin to the constituent single jet with turbulent fluctuations peaking here at $St=0.34$, but showing very little shielding, with their overall sound pressure level (OASPL) mostly linked to the nature of extra flow structures created during merging. Three-dimensional, energy-ranked, coherent structures for twin jets exhibit rather poor low-rank behaviour, especially at the far-field spectral peak $St=0.14$. At $St \gtrsim 0.3$, the SPOD wavepackets show strong visual coherence, resembling Kelvin–Helmholtz instability modes upstream of breakdown, while at the lower frequencies, there is very little spatial coherence with wavepackets peaking downstream of breakdown. Although the leading SPOD modes radiate poorly, reduced-order models using a subset of them, up to $45$ SPOD modes per frequency, show a remarkable match (within $1$ dB) against the LES-predicted sound over $0.1 \lesssim St \lesssim 0.5$, at all angles investigated. At other frequencies, the closely spaced twin jet shows more error, due to its greater hierarchy of spatio-temporal structures, showing slower convergence at the shallower angles.

The description of weakly nonlinear water-wave evolution over a horizontal bottom by the integro-differential Zakharov equation, because of utilising the underlying Hamiltonian structure, has many advantages over direct use of the Euler equations. However, its application to finite-depth situations is not straightforward since, in contrast to the deep-water case, the kernels governing the four-wave interactions are singular, as well as the kernels in the canonical transformation that removes non-resonant interactions from the original equations of motion. At the singularities, these kernels are finite but not unique. The issue of how to use the Zakharov equation for finite depth and whether it is possible at all was debated intensely in the literature for decades but remains outstanding. Here we show that the absence of a limit of the kernels at the singularities is inconsequential, since in the equations of motion it is only the integral that matters. By applying the definition of the Dirac-$\delta$, we show that all the integrals involving a trivial manifold singularity are evaluated uniquely. Therefore, the Zakharov evolution equation and the nonlinear canonical transformation are only apparently singular. The findings are validated by application to examples where predictions based on the Zakharov equation are compared with known solutions obtained from the Euler equations.

We present new numerical solutions for nonlinear standing water waves when the effects of both gravity and surface tension are considered. For small values of the surface tension parameter, solutions are shown to exhibit highly oscillatory capillary waves (parasitic ripples), which are both time- and space-periodic, and which lie on the surface of an underlying gravity-driven standing wave. Our numerical scheme combines a time-dependent conformal mapping together with a shooting method, for which the residual is minimised by Newton iteration. Previous numerical investigations typically clustered gridpoints near the wave crest, and thus lacked the fine detail across the domain required to capture this phenomenon of small-scale parasitic ripples. The amplitude of these ripples is shown to be exponentially small in the zero surface tension limit, and their behaviour is linked to (or explains) the generation of an elaborate bifurcation structure.

An experiment on convective flows induced by the dielectrophoretic force was performed under the microgravity condition provided during a sounding rocket flight. The dielectrophoretic force possesses a non-conservative term that can be seen as resulting from an electric gravity. That gravity can be responsible for an electric Rayleigh–Bénard convection between a hot inner cylinder and a cold outer cylinder when an electric field is applied in the radial direction. Four cells with independent temperature and electric field controls allowed the investigation of eight different values of the electric Rayleigh number relatively close to the onset of the thermo-electric instability. A linear stability analysis is performed to predict the stability threshold and the evolution of the growth rate of the instability. The three-dimensional structure of the flow is captured by simultaneous particle image velocimetry and by shadowgraphy. The amplitude of the instability modes and the time evolution of the flow is analysed, and various methods are proposed to extrapolate the experimental critical value of the electric Rayleigh number for the onset of convection. The measured critical electric Rayleigh number is in agreement with the prediction of the linear stability theory. The comparison of the new experimental results with previous ones from parabolic flight campaigns highlights the importance of long-term microgravity for the achievement of thermal convection at low values of the control parameters.
