The laminar boundary layer on a flat surface is made to separate by way of aspiration through an opposite boundary, causing approximately a 25% deceleration. The detached shear layer transitions to turbulence, reattaches, and evolves towards a normal turbulent boundary layer. We performed the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of this flow, and believe that a precise experimental repeat is possible. The pressure distribution and the Reynolds number based on bubble length are close to those on airfoils; numerous features are in agreement with Gaster's and other experiments and correlations. At transition a large negative surge in skin friction is seen, following weak negative values and a brief contact with zero; this could be described as a turbulent re-separation. Temperature is treated as a passive scalar, first with uniform wall temperature and then with uniform wall heat flux. The transition mechanism involves the wavering of the shear layer and then Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices, which instantly become three-dimensional without pairing, but not primary Görtler vortices. The possible dependence of the DNS solution on the residual incoming disturbances, which we keep well below 0.1%, and on the presence of a ‘hard’ opposite boundary, are discussed. We argue that this flow, unlike the many transitional flows which hinge on a convective instability, is fully specified by just three parameters: the amount of aspiration, and the streamwise and the depth Reynolds numbers (heat transfer adds the Prandtl number). This makes comparisons meaningful, and relevant to separation bubbles on airfoils in low-disturbance environments. We obtained Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) results with simple turbulence models and spontaneous transition. The agreement on skin friction, displacement thickness, and pressure is rather good, which we attribute to the simple nature of ‘transition by contact’ due to flow reversal. In contrast, a surge of the heat-transfer coefficient violates the Reynolds analogy, and is greatly under-predicted by the models.

An investigation of the interfacial-tension-driven fragmentation of a very long fluid filament in a quiescent viscous fluid is presented. Experiments covering almost three orders of magnitude in viscosity ratio reveal as many as 19 satellite droplets in between the largest droplets; complementary boundary-integral calculations are used to study numerically the evolution of the filament as a function of the viscosity ratio of the fluids and the initial wavenumber of the interface perturbation. Satellite drops are generated owing to multiple breakup sequences around the neck region of a highly deformed filament. In low-viscosity ratio systems, p < O(0.1), the breakup mechanism is self-repeating in the sense that every pinch-off is always associated with the formation of a neck, the neck undergoes pinch-off, and the process repeats. In general the agreement between computations and experiments is excellent; both indicate that the initial wavenumber of the disturbance is important in the quantitative details of the generated drop size distributions. However, these details are insignificant when compared with the large variations produced in the drop size distributions owing to variation in the viscosity ratio.

Measurements in three boundary layers, one with constant free-stream velocity and two with power-law variations of free-stream velocity giving ‘moderate’ and ‘strong’ adverse pressure gradients, are presented and discussed. Several unifying features of the turbulent motion, expected to appear in all boundary layers not too far from equilibrium, are identified. The intensity spectra at higher wavenumbers follow the Kolmogorov inertial-subrange law, although the Reynolds number is not particularly high even by laboratory standards: in addition the smaller-scale motion in the outer layer is determined entirely by the local shear stress and the boundary-layer thickness. The large eddy motion increases in strength relative to the general turbulence level as the general turbulence level increases, and the limited evidence available suggests that the large eddies are similar to those in the free mixing layer. In all cases the large eddies contribute a significant proportion of the shear stress in the outer layer.

This paper describes computer simulation studies of granular materials under dense conditions where particles are in persistent contact with their neighbours and the elasticity of the material becomes an important rheological parameter. There are two regimes at this limit, one for which the stresses scale with both elastic and inertial properties (called the elastic–inertial regime), and a non-inertial quasi-static regime in which the stresses scale purely elastically (elastic–quasi-static). In these elastic regimes, the forces are generated by internal force chains. Reducing the concentration slightly causes a transition from an elastic to a purely inertial behaviour. This transition occurs so abruptly that a 2% concentration reduction can be accompanied by nearly three orders of magnitude of stress reduction. This indicates that granular flows near this limit are prone to instabilities such as those commonly observed in shear cells. Unexpectedly, there is no path between inertial (rapid) flow and quasi-static flow by varying the shear rate at a fixed concentration; only by reducing the concentration can one cause a transition from quasi-static to inertial flow. The solid concentrations at which this transition occurs as well as the magnitude of the stresses in the elastic regimes are strong functions of the particle surface friction, because the surface friction strongly affects the strength of the force chains. A parametric analysis of the elastic regime generated flowmaps showing the various regimes that might be realized in practice. Many common materials such as sand require such large shear rates to reach the elastic–inertial regime that it is unattainable for all practical purposes; such materials will demonstrate either an elastic–quasi-static behaviour or a pure inertial behaviour depending on the concentration – with many orders of magnitude of stress change between them. Finally, the effects of nonlinear contacts are investigated and an appropriate scaling is proposed that accounts for the nonlinear behaviour in the elastic–quasi-static regime.

In this paper numerical results are presented for the buoyancy-driven rise of a deformable bubble through an unbounded quiescent fluid. Complete solutions, including the bubble shape, are obtained for Reynolds numbers in the range 1 ≤ R ≤ 200 and for Weber numbers up to 20. For Reynolds numbers R ≤ 20 the shape of the bubble changes from nearly spherical to oblate-ellipsoidal to spherical-cap depending on Weber number; at higher Reynolds numbers ‘disk-like’ and ‘saucer-like’ shapes appear at W = O(10). The present results show clearly that flow separation may occur at a smooth free surface at intermediate Reynolds numbers; this fact suggests a qualitative explanation of the often-observed irregular (zigzag or helical) paths of rising bubbles.

This paper describes an investigation of the dynamics and acoustics of cloud cavitation, the structures which are often formed by the periodic breakup and collapse of a sheet or vortex cavity. This form of cavitation frequently causes severe noise and damage, though the precise mechanism responsible for the enhancement of these adverse effects is not fully understood. In this paper, we investigate the large impulsive surface pressures generated by this type of cavitation and correlate these with the images from high-speed motion pictures. This reveals that several types of propagating structures (shock waves) are formed in a collapsing cloud and dictate the dynamics and acoustics of collapse. One type of shock wave structure is associated with the coherent collapse of a well-defined and separate cloud when it is convected into a region of higher pressure. This type of global structure causes the largest impulsive pressures and radiated noise. But two other types of structure, termed ‘crescent-shaped regions’ and ‘leading-edge structures’ occur during the less-coherent collapse of clouds. These local events are smaller and therefore produce less radiated noise but the interior pressure pulse magnitudes are almost as large as those produced by the global events.

The ubiquity and severity of these propagating shock wave structures provides a new perspective on the mechanisms reponsible for noise and damage in cavitating flows involving clouds of bubbles. It would appear that shock wave dynamics rather than the collapse dynamics of single bubbles determine the damage and noise in many cavitating flows.

Drag reduction strategies for the turbulent flow around a D-shaped body are examined experimentally and theoretically. A reduced-order vortex model describes the interaction between the shear layer and wake dynamics and guides a path to an efficient feedback control design. The derived feedback controller desynchronizes shear-layer and wake dynamics, thus postponing vortex formation. This actuation is tested in a wind tunnel. The Reynolds number based on the height of the body ranges from 23000 to 70000. We achieve a 40% increase in base pressure associated with a 15% drag reduction employing zero-net-mass-flux actuation. Our controller outperforms other approaches based on open-loop forcing and extremum-seeking feedback strategies in terms of drag reduction, adaptivity, and the required actuation energy.

In the last few decades cooperation among fluid dynamicists and geomorphologists has allowed the construction of a rational framework for the quantitative understanding of several geomorphologic processes involved in the shaping of the Earth's surface. Particular emphasis has been given to the dynamics of sedimentary patterns, features arising from the continuous dynamic interaction between the motion of a sediment-carrying fluid and an erodible boundary. It is this interaction which ultimately gives rise to the variety of natural forms, often displaying a high degree of regularity, observed in rivers, estuaries, coasts, as well as in the deep submarine environment. Theoretical analyses and laboratory experiments have shown that the nature of most of the observed patterns is related to fundamental instability mechanisms whose particular character lies in the fact that it is the mobile interface between the fluid and the erodible boundary, rather than the flow itself, that is unstable. Developments have been general enough to reach the status of a distinct branch of fluid mechanics, geomorphological fluid mechanics. This paper concentrates on the mechanics of fluvial meandering. Our aim is to provide the reader with a systematic overview of the fundamental aspects of the subject, assessing, with the help of recent and novel results, settled as well as unsettled issues.

The nonlinear stability of a viscous film flowing steadily down an inclined plane is investigated by the method of multiple scales. It is shown that the super-critically stable, finite amplitude, long, monochromatic wave obtained by Lin (1969, 1970, 1971) is stable to side-band disturbances under modal interaction if the bandwidth is less in magnitude than to the ratio of the amplitude to the film thickness. Near the upper branch of the linear neutral-stability curve where the amplification rate ci is O(ε2), the nonlinear evolution of initially infinitesimal waves of a finite bandwidth is shown to obey the Landau-Stuart equation, Near the lower branch of the neutral curve, the nonlinear evolution is stronger. An equation is derived for describing this strong nonlinear development of relatively long waves. In practice, disturbance of this type clusters in the form of a hump which cannot be constructed only by the first few harmonics.

Exact coherent states in no-slip plane Poiseuille flow are calculated by homotopy from free-slip to no-slip boundary conditions. These coherent states are unstable travelling waves. They consist of wavy low-speed streaks flanked by staggered streamwise vortices closely resembling the asymmetric coherent structures observed in the near-wall region of turbulent flows. The travelling waves arise from a saddle-node bifurcation at a sub-turbulent Reynolds number with wall-normal, spanwise and streamwise dimensions smaller than but comparable to 50+, 100+ and 250+, respectively. These coherent solutions come in pairs with distinct structure and instabilities. There is a three-dimensional continuum of such exact coherent states.

This is a theoretical and experimental study of the basic hydraulics of two flowing layers. Unlike single-layer flows, two-layer flows respond quite differently to bottom depth as opposed to width variations. Bottom-depth changes affect the lower layer directly and the upper layer only indirectly. Changes in width can affect both layers. In fact for flows through a contraction control two distinct flow configurations are possible; which one actually occurs depends on the requirements of matching a downstream flow. Two-layer flows can pass through internally critical conditions at other than the narrowest section. When the two layers are flowing in the same direction, the result is a strong coupling between the two layers in the neighbourhood of the control. For contractions a particularly simple flow then exists upstream in which there is no longer any significant interfacial dynamics; downstream in the divergent section the flow remains internally supercritical, causing one of the layers to be rapidly accelerated with a resulting instability at the interface. A brief discussion of internal hydraulic jumps based upon the energy equations as opposed to the more traditional momentum equations is included. Previous uniqueness problems are thereby avoided.

We derive a system of effective equations for wave propagation in a bubbly liquid. Starting from a microscopic description, we obtain the effective equations by using Foldy's approximation in a nonlinear setting. We discuss in detail the range of validity of the effective equations as well as some of their properties.

We investigate the aerodynamics of freely falling plates in a quasi-two-dimensional flow at Reynolds number of $10^{3}$, which is typical for a leaf or business card falling in air. We quantify the trajectories experimentally using high-speed digital video at sufficient resolution to determine the instantaneous plate accelerations and thus to deduce the instantaneous fluid forces. We compare the measurements with direct numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equation. Using inviscid theory as a guide, we decompose the fluid forces into contributions due to acceleration, translation, and rotation of the plate. For both fluttering and tumbling we find that the fluid circulation is dominated by a rotational term proportional to the angular velocity of the plate, as opposed to the translational velocity for a glider with fixed angle of attack. We find that the torque on a freely falling plate is small, i.e. the torque is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the torque on a glider with fixed angle of attack. Based on these results we revise the existing ODE models of freely falling plates. We get access to different kinds of dynamics by exploring the phase diagram spanned by the Reynolds number, the dimensionless moment of inertia, and the thickness-to-width ratio. In agreement with previous experiments, we find fluttering, tumbling, and apparently chaotic motion. We further investigate the dependence on initial conditions and find brief transients followed by periodic fluttering described by simple harmonics and tumbling with a pronounced period-two structure. Near the cusp-like turning points, the plates elevate, a feature which would be absent if the lift depended on the translational velocity alone.

Grid turbulence convected by a free stream past a rigid surface moving at the same speed as the free stream is analysed by boundary-layer theory and spectral methods. The turbulence is assumed to be weak, i.e. $u^{\prime}_{\infty}/\overline{u}_{\infty}\ll 1$ and its Reynolds number to be large, i.e. $u^{\prime}_{\infty}/\overline{u}_{\infty}\gg 1$ where u′∞ is the r.m.s. turbulent velocity. Two regions are found to exist. The outer, source region B(s) has a thickness of the order of the integral scale L∞. Here the normal component of turbulence decreases and the lateral and streamwise components are amplified. The inner, viscous region B(v) has thickness $[x\nu/\overline{u}_{\infty}]^{\frac{1}{2}} $, where x, v and $\overline{u}_{\infty} $ are the streamwise co-ordinate, kinematic viscosity and mean velocity respectively. Here the turbulent velocity decays to zero at the surface. Spectra variances and cross-correlations are calculated and found to compare well with measurements of turbulence near moving walls by Uzkan & Reynolds (1967) and Thomas & Hancock (1977).

The results of this theory are shown to have a number of applications including the prediction of turbulence near wind-tunnel walls and near flat plates placed parallel to the flow.

The adequacy of direct one-step chemical kinetics for describing ignition and extinction in initially unmixed gases is studied through the particular case of inviscid axisymmetric stagnation-point flow. Oxidant is assumed to blow from upstream infinity at a non-gaseous reservoir of pure fuel at its boiling (or sublimating) temperature. Before reaching the reservoir the oxidant reacts with gaseous fuel flowing in the opposite direction to form product and release heat. This heat is in part conducted and diffused to the reservoir interface to transform more fuel into the gaseous state and continue the steady-state burning. Second-order Arrhenius kinetics for Lewis-number unity is examined. A critical parameter characterizing the phenomenon is shown to be the first Damkohler similarity group D1, the ratio of a time characterizing the flow to a time characterizing the chemical activity.

For small D1 the reactants convect away heat without releasing the energy stored in their chemical bonds. Regular perturbation about chemically frozen flow establishes this condition as the weak burning limit. For large D1 singular perturbation describes a narrow region of intense chemical activity. For infinite D1 (indefinitely fast rate of reaction) the region is reduced to a surface of discontinuity (the thin-flame kinetics of Burke & Schumann).

For intermediate D1 numerical techniques establish that a solution describing burning of moderate intensity joins the two previously mentioned asymptotic limits. It is suggested that sudden transition of the system between the various branches in this domain of intermediate D1 accounts for the phenomena of ignition and extinction of burning.

The particle tracking (PT) technique is used to study turbulent diffusion of particle pairs in a three-dimensional turbulent flow generated by two oscillating grids. The experimental data show a range where the Richardson–Obukhov law 〈r2〉 = Cεt3 is satisfied, and the Richardson–Obukhov constant is found to be C = 0.5. A number of models predict much larger values. Furthermore, the distance–neighbour function is studied in detail in order to determine its general shape. The results are compared with the predictions of three models: Richardson (1926), Batchelor (1952) and Kraichnan (1966a). These three models predict different behaviours of the distance–neighbour function, and of the three, only Richardson's model is found to be consistent with the measurements. We have corrected a minor error in Kraichnan's (1996a) Lagrangian history direct interaction calculations with the result that we had to increase his theoretical value from C = 2.42 to C = 5.5.

The measurements by Zagarola & Smits (1998) of mean velocity profiles in fully developed turbulent pipe flow are repeated using a smaller Pitot probe to reduce the uncertainties due to velocity gradient corrections. A new static pressure correction (McKeon & Smits 2002) is used in analysing all data and leads to significant differences from the Zagarola & Smits conclusions. The results confirm the presence of a power-law region near the wall and, for Reynolds numbers greater than $230\,{\times}\,10^3$ ($R^+\,{>}\,5\,{\times}\,10^3$), a logarithmic region further out, but the limits of these regions and some of the constants differ from those reported by Zagarola & Smits. In particular, the log law is found for $600\,{<}\, y^+\,{<}\,0.12R^+$ (instead of $600\,{<}\,y^+\,{<}\,0.07R^+$), and the von Kármán constant $\kappa$, the additive constant $B$ for the log law using inner flow scaling, and the additive constant $B^*$ for the log law using outer scaling are found to be $0.421 \pm 0.002$, $5.60 \pm 0.08 $ and $1.20 \pm 0.10$, respectively, with 95% confidence level (compared with $0.436 \pm 0.002$, $6.15 \pm 0.08$, and $1.51 \pm 0.03$ found by Zagarola & Smits). The data also confirm that the pipe flow data for Re$_D\,{\le}\,13.6\,{\times}\,10^6$ (as a minimum) are not affected by surface roughness.

The wakes of a pair of circular cylinders are grossly unsteady when the cylinders are separated in a direction normal to the approaching flow by less than one cylinder diameter. The wakes flop randomly between two asymmetric states. The time-scale for the flopping is several orders of magnitude longer than the timescale of vortex shedding, and also several orders of magnitude longer than the timescale for instability of the separating shear layers. When a splitter plate is positioned suitably on the centreline of the cylinders, the flopping can be stopped and the flow made to assume either of the asymmetric states, or a symmetric steady state. For a range of plate positions a new, periodic oscillation occurs. Acoustic excitation can also destroy the flopping mean flow, replacing it by a symmetric flow.

This paper is concerned with small amplitude vortical and entropic unsteady motions imposed on steady potential flows. Its main purpose is to show that, even in this unsteady compressible and vortical flow, the perturbations in pressure p’ and velocity u can be written as p’ = ρ0D0ϕ/Dt and u = ϕ + u(I) respectively, where D0/Dt is the convective derivative relative to the mean potential flow, u(I) is a known function of the imposed upstream disturbance and ϕ is a solution to the linear inhomogeneous wave equation \[ \frac{D_0}{Dt}\bigg(\frac{1}{c^2_0}\frac{D_0\phi}{Dt}\bigg)-\frac{1}{\rho_0}\nabla\cdot(\rho_0\nabla\phi)=\frac{1}{\rho_0}\nabla\cdot\rho_0{\bf u}^{(I)} \] with a dipole source term ρ0−1 [xdtri ]ρ0u(I) whose strength ρ0u(I) is a known function of the imposed upstream distortion field. (Here c0 and ρ0 denote the speed of sound and density of the background potential flow.) This equation is used to extend Hunt's (1973) generalization of the ‘rapid-distortion’ theory of turbulence developed by Batchelor & Proudman (1954) and Ribner & Tucker (1953). These theories predict changes occurring in weakly turbulent flows that are distorted (by solid obstacles and other external influences) in a time short relative to the Lagrangian integral scale.

The theory is applied to the unsteady supersonic flow around a corner and a closed-form analytical solution is obtained. Detailed calculations are carried out to show how the expansion at the corner affects a turbulent incident stream.

We study the existence and the role of solitary waves in the instability of a fluid layer flowing down an inclined plane. The approach presented is fully nonlinear. Solitary waves steady in a moving frame are described by homoclinic trajectories of an associated ordinary differential equation. They are searched numerically for a given value of viscosity and surface tension. Several kinds of solitary waves can exist, characterized by their number n of humps. We investigate the stability of these waves by integrating the initial-value problem directly. Solitary waves with more than 1 hump did not appear in the simulation, and moreover a catastrophic behaviour took place for too large a Reynolds number (R [gsim ] R*1) or too large an amplitude, suggesting a finite-time singularity. The long-term evolution is shown to be a very slow relaxation to a steady state in a moving frame. The relation to the experimental observation of localized wavetrains is also discussed.
