The use of alternating renewal processes to model the behaviour of a repairable system is discussed, and properties of two measures of availability are reviewed. It is shown how the introduction of forward recurrence times to failure enables these measures to be generalised.

A formal proof is given of the equivalence, conjectured by Rostron, of two measures of the genetic difference between two populations.

A Markov renewal theorem necessary for the derivation of the moment formulas for a filtered Markov renewal process stated by Marcus (1974) is proved and its applications are outlined.

We consider an infinite-server queueing system in an extraneous environment. Initially it is shown that the systems of interest can be decomposed into a two-stage system. The primary system is an infinite-server queue with many customer types subject to a clearing mechanism. The secondary system is a special type of bulk-arrival, infinite-server queue. We derive results for the primary and secondary systems separately and combine the results to find the mean steady-state behavior of the original system.

A vector X of patient prognostic variables is modeled as a linear diffusion process with time-dependent, non-random, continuous coefficients. The instantaneous force of mortality (hazard function) operating on the patient is assumed to be a time-dependent, continuous quadratic functional of the prognostic vector. Conditional on initial data X0, the probability of surviving T units of time is expressed in terms of the solution of a Riccati equation, which can be evaluated in closed form if the coefficients of the process and the hazard are constant. This conditional expectation does not preserve proportional hazards.

Let (A1A2, · ··, An) be a set of n events on a probability space. Let be the sum of the probabilities of all intersections of r events, and Mn the number of events in the set which occur. The classical Bonferroni inequalities provide upper and lower bounds for the probabilities P(Mn = m), and equal to partial sums of series of the form which give the exact probabilities. These inequalities have recently been extended by J. Galambos to give sharper bounds.

Here we present straightforward proofs of the Bonferroni inequalities, using indicator functions, and show how they lead naturally to new simple proofs of the Galambos inequalities.

Strong mixing is a condition which is often assumed to prove limit theorems for strictly stationary processes. Leadbetter's condition D(un) is used to prove limit theorems for maxima of stationary processes.

A sufficient condition for strong mixing to hold is given for the case where the process satisfies a pth-order Markov property. This condition can be easy to check for when p is small. This point is illustrated by two examples of first-order autoregressive processes.

The condition D(un) is shown to hold for any stationary Markov process.

The existence of a weak limit birth-and-death process on the natural integers for the simple birth-and-death process conditional on non-extinction up to time t as t→∞ is proved. Starting from the latter a new weak limiting procedure yields a diffusion Markov process on the positive infinite semi-axis.

For distributions of non-negative random variables with a monotonic hazard rate, it is well known that the normalised moments have the same sign-regular property as the distribution. This note extends this correspondence in properties for some common distributions with non-monotonic hazard rates, linking a change in sign-regular properties.

A branching process is described which contains some better-known simple branching processes as special cases. Variables examined are the rate of development, the number of individuals currently alive, and the duration of the process. The apparent dynamics of collapsing supercritical realisations are isolated.

Using Slepian processes as a standard of comparison, estimates are given for the probability that a centered multiparameter stationary Gaussian process reaches a constant barrier u on a subset of the parameter domain.

An algorithm for calculating the probability distribution of ladder epochs is derived. Two theorems are given for bounds on the distribution function of ladder epoch probabilities.

A multichannel loss system with heterogeneous servers operating in parallel is analyzed. The sum of the service rates of all servers is assumed constant. The optimal service rates that minimize the probability of losing a customer are obtained, and are shown to be different from each other. The percentage reduction in the probability of losing a customer in the homogeneous and the best heterogeneous system for a few representative values are included.

Models have been proposed in many diverse areas to generate a lognormal distribution and the underlying idea has always been some form of the law of proportionate effect. In a sense any model must resemble this recipe: take logs and apply the central limit theorem. Our model is no exception. However our formulation is designed to encompass the previous models and demonstrate that the fundamental concept is one of classification. This supersedes a multitude of models which incorporate a mechanism peculiar to a specific application in order to use the law of proportionate effect; we illustrate with applications of the model to ecology, econometrics and geostatistics.

An upper bound for the asymptotic velocity in various directions of first-passage percolation on the square lattice is derived. In particular this gives a lower bound for the so-called time constant. The result is generalized to other lattices. Numerical examples are included.

Consider three independent Poisson processes of point events of rates λ1, λ 2 and λ12. Suppose there are two electronic counters, the first recording events from the first and third Poisson processes, and the second recording events from the second and third Poisson processes. Both counters are subject to dead times of Type II, i.e. where all events, whether recorded or not, cause dead times. The covariance of the numbers of events recorded by the two counters in a suitable time period is derived. This extends earlier work of Cox and Isham (1977) and Kingman (1977) who considered the same problem for Type I counters, i.e. where only recorded events cause dead times.

In recent papers, McLeish and others have obtained invariance principles for weak convergence of martingales to Brownian motion. We generalize these results to prove that solutions of discrete-time stochastic difference equations defined in terms of martingale differences converge weakly to continuous-time solutions of Ito stochastic differential equations. Our proof is based on a theorem of Stroock and Varadhan which characterizes the solution of a stochastic differential equation as the unique solution of an associated martingale problem. Applications to mathematical population genetics are discussed.
