A generalization of the block replacement policy (BRP) is proposed and analysed. Under such a policy, an operating system is preventively replaced at times kT (k = 1, 2, 3, ···), independently of its failure history. At failure an operating system is either replaced by a new or a used one or minimally repaired or remains inactive until the next planned replacement. The cost of the ith minimal repair of the new subsystem at age y depends on the random part C(y) and the deterministic part ci(y). The mathematical model is defined and general analytical results are obtained.

We define an inverse subordinator as the passage times of a subordinator to increasing levels. It has previously been noted that such processes have many similarities to renewal processes. Here we present an expression for the joint moments of the increments of an inverse subordinator. This is an analogue of a result for renewal processes. The main tool is a theorem on processes which are both renewal processes and Cox processes.

By an appropriate partitioning of the matrix of coefficients in the system of differential difference equations for the general stochastic epidemic, the nature of the state probabilities is shown to consist of combinations of factorial terms. Further, factorial moments are readily obtained. In particular, the mean and variance of the number of susceptibles are derived.

A sequence of independent experiments is performed, each producing a letter from a given alphabet. Using a result by Barbour and Eagleson (1984) we prove that under general conditions the number of non-overlapping occurrences of long recurrent patterns has approximately a Poisson distribution.

This paper generalizes previous results for sojourn-time distributions along so-called overtake-free routes in product-form networks of queues.

A functional central limit theorem extending the central limit theorem of Chung (1954) for the Robbins–Munro procedure is proved. It is shown that the asymptotic normality is preserved under certain random stopping rules.

In this note we consider the two-dimensional risk model introduced in Avram, Palmowski and Pistorius (2008) with constant interest rate. We derive the integral-differential equations of the Laplace transforms, and asymptotic expressions for the finite-time ruin probabilities with respect to the joint ruin times Tmax(u1,u2) and Tmin(u1,u2) respectively.

We consider a Markov-modulated Brownian motion reflected to stay in a strip [0, B]. The stationary distribution of this process is known to have a simple form under some assumptions. We provide a short probabilistic argument leading to this result and explain its simplicity. Moreover, this argument allows for generalizations including the distribution of the reflected process at an independent, exponentially distributed epoch. Our second contribution concerns transient behavior of the model. We identify the joint law of the processes defining the model at inverse local times.

The ‘minimal’ repair of a system can take several forms. Statistical or black box minimal repair at failure time t is equivalent to replacing the system with another functioning one of the same age, but without knowledge of precisely what went wrong with the system. Its major attribute is its mathematical tractability. In physical minimal repair, at system failure time t, we minimally repair the ‘component’ which brought the system down at time t. The work of Arjas and Norros, Finkelstein, and Natvig is reviewed. The concept of a rate function for minimal repairs of the statistical and physical types are discussed and developed. It is shown that the number of physical minimal repairs is stochastically larger than the number of statistical minimal repairs for k out of n systems with similar components. Some majorization results are given for physical minimal repair for two component parallel systems with exponential components.

We present a new model for seed banks, where direct ancestors of individuals may have lived in the near as well as the very far past. The classical Wright‒Fisher model, as well as a seed bank model with bounded age distribution considered in Kaj, Krone and Lascoux (2001) are special cases of our model. We discern three parameter regimes of the seed bank age distribution, which lead to substantially different behaviour in terms of genetic variability, in particular with respect to fixation of types and time to the most recent common ancestor. We prove that, for age distributions with finite mean, the ancestral process converges to a time-changed Kingman coalescent, while in the case of infinite mean, ancestral lineages might not merge at all with positive probability. Furthermore, we present a construction of the forward-in-time process in equilibrium. The mathematical methods are based on renewal theory, the urn process introduced in Kaj, Krone and Lascoux (2001) as well as on a paper by Hammond and Sheffield (2013).

A limiting distribution for the age of a class of Markov processes is found if the present state of the process is known. We use this distribution to find the age of branching processes. Using the fact that the moments of the age of birth and death processes and of diffusion processes satisfy difference equations and differential equations respectively, we find simple formulas for these moments. For the Wright–Fisher genetic model we find the probability that a given allele is the oldest in the population if all the gene frequencies are known. The proofs of the main results are based on methods from renewal theory.

More applications of the principle for interchanging components due to Boland et al. (1989) in reliability theory are presented. In the context of active redundancy improvement we show that if two nodes are permutation equivalent then allocating a redundancy component to the weaker position always results in a larger increase in system reliability, which generalizes a previous result due to Boland et al. (1992). In the case of standby redundancy enhancement, we prove that a series (parallel) system is the only system for which standby redundancy at the component level is always more (less) effective than at the system level. Finally, the principle for interchanging components is extended from binary systems to the more complicated multistate systems.

We give an elementary proof of the martingale characterization theorem for Poisson processes over the positive real half line. This theorem is due to Watanabe [8] in the case where the mean measure associated to the Poisson process is the Lebesgue measure.

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail of the stationary backlog distribution in a single server queue with constant service capacity c, fed by the so-called M/G/∞ input process or Cox input process. Asymptotic lower bounds are obtained for any distribution G and asymptotic upper bounds are derived when G is a subexponential distribution. We find the bounds to be tight in some instances, e.g. when G corresponds to either the Pareto or lognormal distribution and c − ρ < 1, where ρ is the arrival rate at the buffer.

This note gives elementary proofs for the characterizations of the Poisson distribution given by Rao and Rubin (1964) and Talwalker (1970) and disproves a conjecture of R. C. and A. B. L. Srivastava (1970).

We extend the construction principle of phase-type (PH) distributions to allow for inhomogeneous transition rates and show that this naturally leads to direct probabilistic descriptions of certain transformations of PH distributions. In particular, the resulting matrix distributions enable the carrying over of fitting properties of PH distributions to distributions with heavy tails, providing a general modelling framework for heavy-tail phenomena. We also illustrate the versatility and parsimony of the proposed approach in modelling a real-world heavy-tailed fire insurance dataset.

In this paper we consider the problem of identifiability for the two-state Markovian arrival process (MAP2). In particular, we show that the MAP2 is not identifiable, providing the conditions under which two different sets of parameters induce identical stationary laws for the observable process.

We consider a Markov additive process (MAP) with phase-type jumps, starting at 0. Given a positive level u, we determine the joint distribution of the undershoot and overshoot of the first jump over the level u, the maximal level before this jump, the time of attaining this maximum, and the time between the maximum and the jump. The analysis is based on first passage times and time reversion of MAPs. A marginal of the derived distribution is the Gerber-Shiu function, which is of interest to insurance risk. Several examples serve to compare the present result with the literature.

The notion of the signature is a basic concept and a powerful tool in the analysis of networks and reliability systems of binary type. An appropriate definition of this concept has recently been introduced for systems that have ν possible states (with ν ≥ 3). In this paper we analyze in detail several properties and the most relevant aspects of such a general definition. For simplicity's sake, we focus our attention on the case ν = 3. Our analysis will however provide a number of hints for understanding the basic aspects of the general case.

A classical Pólya urn scheme is a Markov process where the evolution is encoded by a replacement matrix (Ri, j)1 ≤ i, j ≤ d. At every discrete time-step, we draw a ball uniformly at random, denote its colour c, and replace it in the urn together with Rc, j balls of colour j (for all 1 ≤ j ≤ d). We study multiple drawing Pólya urns, where the replacement rule depends on the random drawing of a set of m balls from the urn (with or without replacement). Many particular examples of this situation have been studied in the literature, but the only general results are due to Kuba and Mahmoud (2017). These authors proved second-order asymptotic results in the two-colour case, under the so-called balance and affinity assumptions, the latter being somewhat artificial. The main idea of this work is to apply stochastic approximation methods to this problem, which enables us to prove analogous results to Kuba and Mahmoud, but without the artificial affinity hypothesis, and, for the first time in the literature, in the d-colour case (d ≥ 3). We also provide some partial results in the two-colour nonbalanced case, the novelty here being that the only results for this case currently in the literature are for particular examples.
