The Brownian density process is a Gaussian distribution-valued process. It can be defined either as a limit of a functional over a Poisson system of independent Brownian particles or as a solution of a stochastic partial differential equation with respect to Gaussian martingale measure. We show that, with an appropriate change in the initial distribution of the infinite particle system, the limiting density process is non-Gaussian and it solves a stochastic partial differential equation where the initial measure and the driving measure are non-Gaussian, possibly having infinite second moment.

We consider a multiarmed bandit problem, where each arm when pulled generates independent and identically distributed nonnegative rewards according to some unknown distribution. The goal is to maximize the long-run average reward per pull with the restriction that any previously learned information is forgotten whenever a switch between arms is made. We present several policies and a peculiarity surrounding them.

A problem of regrinding and recycling worn train wheels leads to a Markov population process with distinctive properties, including a product-form equilibrium distribution. A convenient framework for analyzing this process is via the notion of dynamic reversal, a natural extension of ordinary (time) reversal. The dynamically reversed process is of the same type as the original process, which allows a simple derivation of some important properties. The process seems not to belong to any class of Markov processes for which stationary distributions are known.

Draw two lines, L1 and L2, in a plane. Along L1 place the points of a Poisson process, and through each point draw a line, the angles of intersection with L1 being distributed independently and uniformly on (0, π) . The intercepts of these random lines with L2 form a new process, which is Poisson if and only if L1 and L2 are parallel. Curiously, if L1 and L2 are inclined then, with probability 1, the new process forms a dense subset of L2. It is not really even a point process. In the present paper we shall investigate this anomaly and some of its generalizations.

Consider a bipartite random geometric graph on the union of two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes in d-space, with distance parameter r and intensities λ,μ. For any λ>0 we consider the percolation threshold μc(λ) associated to the parameter μ. Denoting by λc the percolation threshold for the standard Poisson Boolean model with radii r, we show the lower bound μc(λ)≥clog(c∕(λ−λc)) for any λ>λc with c>0 a fixed constant. In particular, there is no phase transition in μ at the critical value of λ, that is, μc(λc) =∞.

Pitman (2003), and subsequently Gnedin and Pitman (2006), showed that a large class of random partitions of the integers derived from a stable subordinator of index $\alpha\in(0,1)$ have infinite Gibbs (product) structure as a characterizing feature. The most notable case are random partitions derived from the two-parameter Poisson–Dirichlet distribution, $\textrm{PD}(\alpha,\theta)$, whose corresponding $\alpha$-diversity/local time have generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions, denoted by $\textrm{ML}(\alpha,\theta)$. Our aim in this work is to provide indications on the utility of the wider class of Gibbs partitions as it relates to a study of Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and size-biased sampling, and in decompositions of special functions, and its potential use in the understanding of various constructions of more exotic processes. We provide characterizations of general laws associated with nested families of $\textrm{PD}(\alpha,\theta)$ mass partitions that are constructed from fragmentation operations described in Dong et al. (2014). These operations are known to be related in distribution to various constructions of discrete random trees/graphs in [n], and their scaling limits. A centerpiece of our work is results related to Mittag–Leffler functions, which play a key role in fractional calculus and are otherwise Laplace transforms of the $\textrm{ML}(\alpha,\theta)$ variables. Notably, this leads to an interpretation within the context of $\textrm{PD}(\alpha,\theta)$ laws conditioned on Poisson point process counts over intervals of scaled lengths of the $\alpha$-diversity.

Upper deviation results are obtained for the split time of a supercritical continuous-time Markov branching process. More precisely, we establish the existence of logarithmic limits for the likelihood that the split times of the process are greater than an identified value and determine an expression for the limiting quantity. We also give an estimation for the lower deviation probability of the split times, which shows that the scaling is completely different from the upper deviations.

Consider the following random spatial network: in a large disk, construct a network using a stationary and isotropic Poisson line process of unit intensity. Connect pairs of points using the network, with initial/final segments of the connecting path formed by travelling off the network in the opposite direction to that of the destination/source. Suppose further that connections are established using ‘near geodesics’, constructed between pairs of points using the perimeter of the cell containing these two points and formed using only the Poisson lines not separating them. If each pair of points generates an infinitesimal amount of traffic divided equally between the two connecting near geodesics, and if the Poisson line pattern is conditioned to contain a line through the centre, then what can be said about the total flow through the centre? In Kendall (2011) it was shown that a scaled version of this flow has asymptotic distribution given by the 4-volume of a region in 4-space, constructed using an improper anisotropic Poisson line process in an infinite planar strip. Here we construct a more amenable representation in terms of two ‘seminal curves’ defined by the improper Poisson line process, and establish results which produce a framework for effective simulation from this distribution up to an L1 error which tends to 0 with increasing computational effort.

This paper first considers a simple deterministic epidemic in a growing population. It then examines a simple deterministic epidemic in several related growing communities, where infection is transmitted between individuals both within and across the communities. An explicit parametric solution is derived for the number of susceptibles in these communities as a function of time.

A recent paper in Advances in Applied Probability (Siegel (1976)) considered the duration of the time Tmn for a linear birth and death process to grow from a (large) initial size m to a larger size n. The main aim was to show that, when the birth rate exceeds the death rate, Tmn is close to its mean value, log n/m, with high probability. This paper establishes this result using much simpler techniques.

We consider a supercritical, p-dimensional Markov branching process (MBP). Based on the finite and the infinite lines of descent of particles of this p-dimensional MBP, we construct an associated 2p-dimensional process. We show that such a process is a 2p-dimensional, supercritical MBP. This 2p-dimensional process retains the branching property when conditioned on the sets of extinction and non-extinction. Asymptotic results and central limit theorems for the associated process and the original process are established by using the results of Gadag and Rajarshi (1987).

It is demonstrated that standard Brownian motion in the tangent plane at the centroid of frequency space does not well approximate the discrete Wright—Fisher process for more than 2N generations where N is the effective population size. This result is obtained using Wright's concept of negligible mutation rate for the study of systematic evolutionary effects together with Ludwig's notion of the persistence of a dynamical system. This work may be viewed as a mathematical elaboration of a portion of Wright's shifting balance theory of evolution.

After some reminiscences about the founding of the Applied Probability journals the author discusses three open problems concerned respectively with:

(i) the prehistory of applied probability

(ii) Poisson–Delauney Simplexes

(iii) voids and pancakes in the universe.

The present paper generalizes the results of the author's paper [2] on “Discontinuous Markov processes” to processes that are incompletely specified. These results are then used to develop a step-by-step method of solution for processes involving several kinds of “jumps”, where at the first step one solves for the transition probabilities involving jumps of the first kind, but not of the second, third, etc., at the second step for transition probabilities involving jumps of the first and second, but not the third, fourth, etc. kinds, and so on. Some examples are given.

This paper arises from the observation by Dirac [1] that an exact measurement of the velocity of an electron should give one of the instantaneous values ± c. The velocity v < c with which the electron moves bodily is in some statistical sense an average. This aspect of the quantum states of motion of a relativistic particle has frequently been mentioned [2], [3] and, as is wellknown, is connected with the self energy problem. Such deductions from quantum mechanics have led the author to consider the possibility of constructing from purely statistical ideas an entity having the physical properties of a relativistic elementary particle. One might reasonably hope to build up characteristics such as rest mass and spin in such a scheme. Properties such as energy and momentum will arise as averages over fluctuating random quantities. In this paper we shall concentrate on rest mass, energy and momentum. We shall show that a zero rest mass object which is regarded as being imbedded in a statistical structure emulates the characteristic of rest mass. The average energy and momentum of this statistical system are then shown to satisfy the usual classical relativistic relation between energy and momentum. The statistical structure chosen is that of an object with a randomly orientated velocity vector, c, which has a fixed magnitude c … |c| where c is the velocity of light.

In this paper we quantify the efficiency of parallelism in systems that are prone to failures and exhibit power law processing delays. We characterize the performance of two prototype schemes of parallelism, redundant and split, in terms of both the power law exponent and exact asymptotics of the delay distribution tail. We also develop the optimal splitting scheme which ensures that split always outperforms redundant.

Let {W(t), 0 ≦ t < ∞} be the standard Wiener process. The techniques of computing probabilities of the type are well known. The main purpose of this paper is to present ways of finding barrier-absorption probabilities when the barrier function is defined only on sub-intervals of [0, T].
