We study the asymptotic tail behavior of the first-passage time over a moving boundary for a random walk conditioned to return to zero, where the increments of the random walk have finite variance. Typically, the asymptotic tail behavior may be described through a regularly varying function with exponent -½, where the impact of the boundary is captured by the slowly varying function. Yet, the moving boundary may have a stronger effect when the tail is considered at a time close to the return point of the random walk bridge, leading to a possible phase transition depending on the order of the distance between zero and the moving boundary.

Consider n cells, of which some are target cells, and suppose that each cell has a weight. The cells are killed in a sequential manner, with each currently live cell being the next one killed with a probability proportional to its weight. We study the distribution of the number of cells that are alive at the moment when all the target cells have been killed.

We consider a Lévy process Y(t) that is not continuously observed, but rather inspected at Poisson( $\omega$ ) moments only, over an exponentially distributed time $T_\beta$ with parameter $\beta$ . The focus lies on the analysis of the distribution of the running maximum at such inspection moments up to $T_\beta$ , denoted by $Y_{\beta,\omega}$ . Our main result is a decomposition: we derive a remarkable distributional equality that contains $Y_{\beta,\omega}$ as well as the running maximum process $\bar Y(t)$ at the exponentially distributed times $T_\beta$ and $T_{\beta+\omega}$ . Concretely, $\overline{Y}(T_\beta)$ can be written as the sum of two independent random variables that are distributed as $Y_{\beta,\omega}$ and $\overline{Y}(T_{\beta+\omega})$ . The distribution of $Y_{\beta,\omega}$ can be identified more explicitly in the two special cases of a spectrally positive and a spectrally negative Lévy process. As an illustrative example of the potential of our results, we show how to determine the asymptotic behavior of the bankruptcy probability in the Cramér–Lundberg insurance risk model.

In this paper we present a method to recover a time-homogeneous piecewise constant volatility from a finite set of perpetual put option prices. The whole calculation process of the volatility is decomposed into easy computations in many fixed disjoint intervals. In each interval, the volatility is obtained by solving a system of nonlinear equations.

The aim of this paper is to provide the conditions necessary to reduce the complexity of state filtering for finite stochastic systems (FSSs). A concept of lumpability for FSSs is introduced. In this paper we assert that the unnormalised filter for a lumped FSS has linear dynamics. Two sufficient conditions for such a lumpability property to hold are discussed. We show that the first condition is also necessary for the lumped FSS to have linear dynamics. Next, we prove that the second condition allows the filter of the original FSS to be obtained directly from the filter for the lumped FSS. Finally, we generalise an earlier published result for the approximation of a general FSS by a lumpable FSS.

Under mild assumptions, we show that the exact convergence rate in total variation is also exact in weaker Wasserstein distances for the Metropolis–Hastings independence sampler. We develop a new upper and lower bound on the worst-case Wasserstein distance when initialized from points. For an arbitrary point initialization, we show that the convergence rate is the same and matches the convergence rate in total variation. We derive exact convergence expressions for more general Wasserstein distances when initialization is at a specific point. Using optimization, we construct a novel centered independent proposal to develop exact convergence rates in Bayesian quantile regression and many generalized linear model settings. We show that the exact convergence rate can be upper bounded in Bayesian binary response regression (e.g. logistic and probit) when the sample size and dimension grow together.

We consider a multicommodity flow problem on a complete graph whose edges have random, independent, and identically distributed capacities. We show that, as the number of nodes tends to infinity, the maximum utility, given by the average of a concave function of each commodity flow, has an almost-sure limit. Furthermore, the asymptotically optimal flow uses only direct and two-hop paths, and can be obtained in a distributed manner.

Known results on the moments of the distribution generated by the two-locus Wright–Fisher diffusion model, and the duality between the diffusion process and the ancestral process with recombination are briefly summarized. A numerical method for computing moments using a Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation and a method to compute closed-form expressions of the moments are presented. By applying the duality argument, the properties of the ancestral recombination graph are studied in terms of the moments.

In this paper we introduce the transformed two-parameter Poisson–Dirichlet distribution on the ordered infinite simplex. Furthermore, we prove the central limit theorem related to this distribution when both the mutation rate θ and the selection rate σ become large in a specified manner. As a consequence, we find that the properly scaled homozygosities have asymptotical normal behavior. In particular, there is a certain phase transition with the limit depending on the relative strength of σ and θ.

We pose an optimal control problem arising in a perhaps new model for retirement investing. Given a control function f and our current net worth X(t) for any t, we invest an amount f(X(t)) in the market. We need a fortune of M ‘superdollars’ to retire and want to retire as early as possible. We model our change in net worth over each infinitesimal time interval by the Itô process dX(t) = (1 + f(X(t)))dt + f(X(t))dW(t). We show how to choose the optimal f = f0 and show that the choice of f0 is optimal among all nonanticipative investment strategies, not just among Markovian ones.

We improve on previous finite time estimates for the simulated annealing algorithm which were obtained from a Cheeger-like approach. Our approach is based on a Poincaré inequality.

This paper is concerned with properties of the algebraic degree of the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of phase-type (PH) distributions. The main problem of interest is: given a PH generator, how do we find the maximum and the minimum algebraic degrees of all irreducible PH representations with that PH generator? Based on the matrix exponential (ME) order of ME distributions and the spectral polynomial algorithm, a method for computing the algebraic degree of a PH distribution is developed. The maximum algebraic degree is identified explicitly. Using Perron-Frobenius theory of nonnegative matrices, a lower bound and an upper bound on the minimum algebraic degree are found, subject to some conditions. Explicit results are obtained for special cases.

The functional differential equation y′(x) = ay(λx) + by(x) arises in many different situations. The purpose of this note is to show how it arises in some multitype branching process cell population models. We also show how its solution can be given an intuitive interpretation as the probability density function of an infinite sum of independent but not identically distributed random variables.

An account is given of the autocorrelation theory of seasonal moving average models, using a vector representation defined by the author. It is shown that the autocorrelation structure of a seasonal moving average is reducible to that of a certain non-seasonal moving average, independently of the value of the seasonal periodicity if sufficiently large. It is pointed out that existing methods for the Cramér–Wold factorization discussed in Godolphin (1976) can easily be adapted to contend with the seasonal case.

Norma McArthur, one of the four founding trustees of the Applied Probability Trust, died at her home in Canberra, Australia, on 17 January 1984. She had fought a long battle with cancer, exhibiting great resilience, clear-sightedness and courage to the last. When we took leave of each other in Canberra in August 1983, she was making plans for our next meeting in July 1984.

The utility of the moments of the binomial distribution in finding the n-stage transition probabilities was indicated by Khazanie and McKean (1966). In this paper, maintaining the same breeding structure as in the two-allele case, it is proposed to extend the technique to cover the multiallelic case in general, with specific emphasis on the triallelic case. The existing literature on the multiple allelic case is at best scanty (see for example Kimura (1955)). Section 6 will briefly touch on a further extension to multiple loci which segregate independently.

Motivated by applications to wireless networks, cloud computing, data centers, etc., stochastic processing networks have been studied in the literature under various asymptotic regimes. In the heavy traffic regime, the steady-state mean queue length is proved to be $\Theta({1}/{\epsilon})$ , where $\epsilon$ is the heavy traffic parameter (which goes to zero in the limit). The focus of this paper is on obtaining queue length bounds on pre-limit systems, thus establishing the rate of convergence to heavy traffic. For the generalized switch, operating under the MaxWeight algorithm, we show that the mean queue length is within $\textrm{O}({\log}({1}/{\epsilon}))$ of its heavy traffic limit. This result holds regardless of the complete resource pooling (CRP) condition being satisfied. Furthermore, when the CRP condition is satisfied, we show that the mean queue length under the MaxWeight algorithm is within $\textrm{O}({\log}({1}/{\epsilon}))$ of the optimal scheduling policy. Finally, we obtain similar results for the rate of convergence to heavy traffic of the total queue length in load balancing systems operating under the ‘join the shortest queue’ routeing algorithm.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the real-time trading of electricity. We address a model for an auction-like trading which captures key features of real-world electricity markets. Our main result establishes that, under certain conditions, the expected total payment for electricity is independent of the particular auction type. This result is analogous to the revenue-equivalence theorem known for classical auctions and could contribute to an improved understanding of different electricity market designs and their comparison.

We study the buffer allocation problem in a two-stage cyclic queueing system. First, we show that transposing the number of buffers assigned to each queue does not affect the throughput. Second, we prove that the optimal buffer allocation scheme, in the sense of maximizing the system's throughput, is the one for which the absolute difference between the number of buffers, assigned to each queue, is minimized, i.e., it becomes either 0 or 1. This optimal allocation is insensitive to the general-type service-time distributions. These two distributions may be different and service times may even be correlated.
