We analyze the smoothing effect of superposing homogeneous sources in a network. We consider a tandem queueing network representing the nodes that customers generated by these sources pass through. The servers in the tandem queues have different time varying service rates. In between the tandem queues there are propagation delays. We show that for arbitrary arrival and service processes which are mutually independent, the sum of unfinished works in the tandem queues is monotone in the number of homogeneous sources in the increasing convex order sense, provided the total intensity of the foreground traffic is constant. The results hold for both fluid and discrete traffic models.

The limiting distributions of the sums of the lengths of four different kinds of runs of consecutive successes of Markov Bernoulli sequences are derived. It is shown that the limits are convolutions of several distributions involving the Bernoulli, the geometric and the Poisson or compound Poisson distributions.

We consider networks with a very large or infinite number of nodes, linked by cable channels. The request which comes to a node is ordered to occupy a certain route of successive channels. The functioning of the system is regulated by the reserving of channels in order of the arrivals of the requests. Under some general conditions the existence of an ergodic region for such networks is proved. The practical value of the result lies in the fact that these conditions do not depend on the size of the graph.

A supplemented GSMP (generalized semi-Markov process) is a useful stochastic process for discussing fairly general queues including queueing networks. Although much work has been done on its insensitivity property, there are only a few papers on its general properties. This paper considers a supplemented GSMP in a general setting. Our main concern is with a system of Laplace–Stieltjes transforms of the steady state equations called the basic equations. The basic equations are derived directly under the stationary condition. It is shown that these basic equations with some other conditions characterize the stationary distribution. We mention how to get a solution to the basic equations when the solution is partially known or inferred. Their applications to queues are discussed.

The random walk between an absorbing and a reflecting or semi-reflecting barrier has been discussed in the literature. Indeed, a biological example of such a random walk, arising from a system of countercurrent dialysis, was described by this author. In this earlier paper a technique was suggested for obtaining the probability of being in a specific state after a given number of transitions, if the probability is unity of being in the reflecting state at time zero. The present paper extends this technique to yield the full matrix of higher transition probabilities.

It is shown that the celebrated result of Sparre Andersen for random walks and Lévy processes has intriguing consequences when the last time of the process in (-∞, 0], say σ, is added to the picture. In the case of no positive jumps this leads to six random times, all of which have the same distribution—the uniform distribution on [0, σ]. Surprisingly, this result does not appear in the literature, even though it is based on some classical observations concerning exchangeable increments.

An upper bound for the hazard rate function of a convolution of not necessarily independent random lifetimes is provided, which generalizes a recent result established for independent random lifetimes. Similar results are considered for the reversed hazard rate function. Applications to parametric and semiparametric models are also given.

We consider a space-time random field on ${{\mathbb{R}^d} \times {\mathbb{R}}}$ given as an integral of a kernel function with respect to a Lévy basis with a convolution equivalent Lévy measure. The field obeys causality in time and is thereby not continuous along the time axis. For a large class of such random fields we study the tail behaviour of certain functionals of the field. It turns out that the tail is asymptotically equivalent to the right tail of the underlying Lévy measure. Particular examples are the asymptotic probability that there is a time point and a rotation of a spatial object with fixed radius, in which the field exceeds the level x, and that there is a time interval and a rotation of a spatial object with fixed radius, in which the average of the field exceeds the level x.

Let us suppose that telephone calls arrive at a telephone exchange according to a recurrent process. We shall assume that there are infinitely many lines available and that, therefore, no call is ever lost. Ordinarily, it is assumed that the holding times (the durations of the connections) are identically distributed, independent, random variables with an exponential distribution. The American folklore, however, assumes that women talk more than men. In this paper, we shall consider the possibility of calls requiring one of several (s) different exponential holding times.

An asymptotic expansion is derived for Sr(n)/Tr(n), where r and n are integers, and . Bounds for the remainder after kterms of the expansion are obtained and it is shown how the expansion may be applied in hypothesis testing and the study of the transient behaviour of a queue with batch arrivals.

The asymptotic distribution of the traffic average in the case of M/G/∞ with bulk arrivals has been proved in [7] to be normal with mean μCμPμF and variance where and are the variances and μP and μc are the means of the service-time and the batch-size respectively, μF being the mean inter-arrival time. We prove in this note that the asymptotic normality holds even in the more general case of a G//G/∞ with bulk arrivals.

We study a random record model where the observation Xi has continuous distribution function Fαi (αi > 0) and the number of available observations is random and independent of the observations. We obtain the joint distribution of the record values and inter-record times for our model. We investigate the distribution of the number of records when the number of observations has one of the common distributions and the α's increase geometrically or linearly. A particularly interesting case arises when the observations arrive at time points paced by a Poisson point process. For this model we obtain distributional results for the inter-arrival times of records for a large class of combinations of α structures and intensity functions.

Nelson [9], [10] has computed the generating function of return probabilities to the initial state for a particular Markov chain on permutations of three objects. The formula obtained is

The present paper studies three distinct Markov chains generalizing the Nelson chain: the so-called three-coloured chain, with some birth-and-death processes on ℤ as a particular case, a chain on a graph close to the graph of the edges of a cube, and the daisy library. Two other themes piece together these chains: the notion of coloured chain and the technique of computation by additive processes.

A circle is covered by random arcs with a given length a and endpoints chosen (independently and uniformly) among m equispaced points on the circle. The asymptotic distribution as a → 0 and m → ∞of the number of arcs required for complete coverage is given. The result connects earlier results for the cases ma = 1 (a discrete problem) and m = ∞ (the continuous limiting case).

General and unifying approaches are discussed for computing fundamental characteristics of both continuous-time and discrete-time birth-death processes. In particular, an exponential family framework is used to derive explicit expressions, in terms of continued fractions, for joint generating functions of first-passage times and a whole collection of associated random quantities, and a random sum representation is used to obtain formulae for means, variances and covariances of stopped reward functions defined on a birth-death process.

The autopsy data of a coherent system is the pair (T, I), where T is the time to the failure of the system, and I is the set of components failed by that time. A basic question is under which conditions the distribution of the autopsy data determines the joint life distribution of the components. This problem has been studied under various distributional and structural assumptions (always under the assumption of independent component life distributions) by Meilijson (1981), Nowik (1990) and Antoine, Doss and Hollander (1993). In this paper we study the same problem in the situation when the autopsy data is supplemented with data from lifemonitoring and conditional lifemonitoring of some components, as introduced by Meilijson (1994).

Strings are generated by sequences of independent draws from a given alphabet. For a given pattern H of length l and an integer n ≥ l, our goal is to maximize the probability of stopping on the last appearance of the pattern H in a string of length n (if any), given that, if we choose to stop on an occurrence of H, we must do so right away. This contrasts with the goals of several other investigations on patterns in strings such as computing the expected occurrence time and the probability of finding exactly r patterns in a string of fixed length. Several motivations are given for our problem ranging from relatively simple best choice problems to more difficult stopping problems allowing for a variety of interesting applications. We solve this problem completely in the homogeneous case for uncorrelated patterns. However, several of these results extend immediately to the inhomogeneous case. In the homogeneous case, optimal success probabilities are shown to vary, depending on characteristics of the pattern, essentially between the value 1/e and a new asymptotic constant 0.619…. These results demonstrate a considerable difference between the true optimal success probability compared with what a first approximation by heuristic arguments would yield. It is interesting to see that the so-called odds algorithm which gives the optimal rule for l = 1 yields an excellent approximation of the optimal rule for any l. This is important for applications because the odds algorithm is very convenient. We finally give a detailed asymptotic analysis for the homogeneous case.

We prove a second-order limit law for additive functionals of a d-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index H = 1 / d, using the method of moments and extending the Kallianpur–Robbins law, and then give a functional version of this result. That is, we generalize it to the convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions for corresponding stochastic processes.

In this article we introduce a simple tool to derive polynomial upper bounds for the probability of observing unusually large maximal components in some models of random graphs when considered at criticality. Specifically, we apply our method to a model of a random intersection graph, a random graph obtained through p-bond percolation on a general d-regular graph, and a model of an inhomogeneous random graph.
