We obtain a representation of an arbitrary discrete distribution with n mass points by an equiprobable mixture of r distributions, each of which has no more than a (≧2) mass points, where r is the smallest integer greater than or equal to (n – 1)/(a – 1). An application to the generation of discrete random variables on a computer is described, which has as an important special case Walker's (1977) alias method.

This paper is concerned with the problem of first emptiness in a continuous time dam model formulated by Gani and Prabhu (1959) based on Moran's (1954) discrete time dam model. Briefly the dam model is as follows: The dam is of finite capacity K, whose content 0 ≦ Z(t) ≦ K is defined in continuous time t (0 ≦ t < ∞) by the equation where ηδt is the time the dam is empty in (t, t + δt). X(t) represents the input into the dam during time t, a Poisson process with parameter λ, such that in a small interval of time δt, the quantity δX(t) = 0 or h (< K) may be added to the dam content; min{Z(t) + δX(t),K} indicates that there will be an overflow whenever Z(t) + δX(t) > K, leaving only the amount K in the dam, and (1-η)δt represents a continuous release occurring at a steady unit rate except when z(t) = 0, when there is no release.

In this paper, a fourth moment bound for partial sums of functionals of strongly ergodic Markov chains is established. This type of inequality plays an important role in the study of the empirical process invariance principle. This inequality is specially adapted to the technique of Dehling, Durieu, and Volný (2008). The same moment bound can be proved for dynamical systems whose transfer operator has some spectral properties. Examples of applications are given.

We present a uniqueness result for Gibbs point processes with interactions that come from a non-negative pair potential; in particular, we provide an explicit uniqueness region in terms of activity z and inverse temperature $\beta$ . The technique used relies on applying to the continuous setting the classical Dobrushin criterion. We also present a comparison to the two other uniqueness methods of cluster expansion and disagreement percolation, which can also be applied for this type of interaction.

We consider an (R, Q) inventory model with two types of orders, normal orders and emergency orders, which are issued at different inventory levels. These orders are delivered after exponentially distributed lead times. In between deliveries, the inventory level decreases in a state-dependent way, according to a release rate function $\alpha({\cdot})$ . This function represents the fluid demand rate; it could be controlled by a system manager via price adaptations. We determine the mean number of downcrossings $\theta(x)$ of any level x in one regenerative cycle, and use it to obtain the steady-state density f (x) of the inventory level. We also derive the rates of occurrence of normal deliveries and of emergency deliveries, and the steady-state probability of having zero inventory.

This paper deals with optimal stopping rules for a sampling process with uncertain recall, i.e. the probability that a past observation is currently available declines exponentially with the time elapsed since it was last observed. The main result of this paper is that for such sampling processes, and for any utility function, if a solicitation of a past observation incurs the same cost as a new draw, then it is never optimal to continue the sampling when the observation solicited is found to be available. This result applies to both bounded and unbounded sequential decision procedures.

Let A1, A2, ···, An be events on a given probability space and let Br, n be the event that exactly r of the A's occur. Let further Sk (n) be the kth binomial moment of the number of the A's which occur. A sufficient condition is given for the existence of lim P (Br,n), as n→ + ∞, in terms of limits of the Sk(n)'s and a formula is given for the limit above. This formula for the limit is similar to the sieve theorem of Takács (1967) for infinite sequences of events and in the proof we make use of Takács's analytic method. The result is immediately applicable to the limit distribution of the maximum of (dependent) random variables X1, X2, ···, Xn by choosing Aj = {Xj ≧ x}. Our main theorem is reformulated for this special case and an example is given for illustration.

The product moment equations previously derived are first discussed for the infinite one- and two-dimensional Ising (or autologistic) model in the case of non-zero mean, as a prelude to an examination of the probability structure in the higher-dimensional (and nominally zero mean) case below the ‘critical temperature’. Of two simple possible models, A and B, both consistent with the division of the product moment p into ergodic, and long-range non-ergodic, components, such that ρ = r (1 – m2) + m2, where r is the intrinsic correlation coefficient, it is shown that the second model B appears appropriate to the three-dimensional ‘spherical model’, but the first model A to the Ising model. We prove a ratio identity giving a transform of the distribution of the position of a two barrier random walk as a ratio of the equivalent transforms for the one barrier random walk. This ratio identity holds for skip free random walks where the increments are dependent on both the previous increment and also the position of the random walk.

Based on infinite and finite line of descent of particles of a one-dimensional supercritical Galton-Watson branching process (GWBP), we construct an associated bivariate process. We show that this bivariate process is a two-dimensional, supercritical GWBP. We also show that this process retains its branching property on appropriate probability spaces, when conditioned on set of non-extinction and set of extinction. Some asymptotic and weak convergence results for this process have been established. A generalisation of these results to a multitype p-dimensional GWBP has also been carried out.

Several different orderings for the comparison of point processes have been introduced and their relationships discussed in Whitt [9], Daley [2] and Deng [4]. It is of some interest to know whether these orderings, in general, are preserved under various operations on point processes. Some results concerning limit operations were given in Deng [4].

In the present paper, we first further introduce some convex and concave orderings for counting processes, and survey the relationships among all orderings mentioned in [9], [4] and this paper. Then we focus our attention on the study of the conditions for the preservation of orderings under the operations of superposition, thinning, shift, and random change of time.

In this paper we study a generalized Pólya urn with balls of two colors and a random triangular replacement matrix. We extend some results of Janson (2004), (2005) to the case where the largest eigenvalue of the mean of the replacement matrix is not in the dominant class. Using some useful martingales and the embedding method introduced in Athreya and Karlin (1968), we describe the asymptotic composition of the urn after the nth draw, for large n.

In this paper, we introduce a compound random mapping model which can be viewed as a generalization of the basic random mapping model considered by Ross and by Jaworski. We investigate a particular example, the Poisson compound random mapping, and compare results for this model with results known for the well-studied uniform random mapping model. We show that, although the structure of the components of the random digraph associated with a Poisson compound mapping differs from the structure of the components of the random digraph associated with the uniform model, the limiting distribution of the normalized order statistics for the sizes of the components is the same as in the uniform case, i.e. the limiting distribution is the Poisson-Dirichlet (½) distribution on the simplex {{xi} : ∑ xi ≤ 1, xi ≥ xi+1 ≥ 0 for every i ≥ 1}.

The paper characterizes matrices which have a given system of vectors orthogonal with respect to a given probability distribution as its right eigenvectors. Results of Hoare and Rahman are unified in this context, then all matrices with a given orthogonal polynomial system as right eigenvectors under the constraint a0j = 0 for j ≥ 2 are specified. The only stochastic matrices P = {pij} satisfying p00 + p01 = 1 with the Hahn polynomials as right eigenvectors have the form of the Moran mutation model.

Parrondo’s coin-tossing games were introduced as a toy model of the flashing Brownian ratchet in statistical physics but have emerged as a paradigm for a much broader phenomenon that occurs if there is a reversal in direction in some system parameter when two similar dynamics are combined. Our focus here, however, is on the original Parrondo games, usually labeled A and B. We show that if the parameters of the games are allowed to be arbitrary, subject to a fairness constraint, and if the two (fair) games A and B are played in an arbitrary periodic sequence, then the rate of profit can not only be positive (the so-called Parrondo effect), but can also be arbitrarily close to 1 (i.e. 100%).

In this paper the integrated three-valued telegraph process is examined. In particular, the third-order equations governing the distributions , (where N(t) denotes the number of changes of the telegraph process up to time t) are derived and recurrence relationships for them are obtained by solving suitable initial-value problems. These recurrence formulas are related to the Fourier transform of the conditional distributions and are used to obtain explicit results for small values of k. The conditional mean values (where V(0) denotes the initial velocity of motions) are obtained and discussed.

A generating function technique is used to determine the probability that the deviation between two empirical distributions drawn from the same population lies within a given band a specified number of times. We also treat the asymptotic problem of very large sample size, and obtain explicit expressions when the relative number of failures is very small or very large.

Recently, the properties of ESSs for random payoff matrices, and stable polymorphisms for random fitness matrices, have been investigated. These problems are very closely related, and some similarities and differences are examined here. In contrast to some earlier work, non-robustness of the conclusions, to changes in the distribution of the random matrices, are found in two areas: in the asymptotic number of polymorphisms (or ESSs) whose support is a given size, and in the location of a polymorphism (or ESS) whose size of support is 2 or 3, in a large matrix.

We consider an M/GI/1 queue with two types of customers, positive and negative, which cancel each other out. The server provides service to either a positive customer or a negative customer. In such a system, the queue length can be either positive or negative and an arrival either joins the queue, if it is of the same sign, or instantaneously removes a customer of the opposite sign at the end of the queue or in service. This study is a generalization of Gelenbe's original concept of a queue with negative customers, where only positive customers need services and negative customers arriving at an empty system are lost or need no service. In this paper, we derive the transient and the stationary probability distributions for the major performance measures in terms of generating functions and Laplace transforms. It has been shown that the previous results for the system with negative arrivals of zero service time are special cases of our model. In addition, we obtain the stationary waiting time distribution of this system in terms of a Laplace transform.

In a multitype critical age dependent branching process with immigration, the numbers of cell types born by t, divided by t2, tends in law to a one-dimensional (degenerate) law whose Laplace transform is explicitily given. The method of proof makes a correspondence between the moments in the m-dimensional case and the one-dimensional case, for which the corresponding limit theorem is known. Other applications are given, a possible relaxation of moment assumptions, and extensions are indicated.
