A close relationship has been found between the decomposition of feeds in the macro-respirometer and their digestibility. The degree of nitrogen mineralization appears also to conform with certain aspects of protein digestibility. The various relationships are sufficiently close to suggest that the macro-respirometer can be used in a preliminary assessment of the digestibility of feeds.

The aim of this investigation was to grow barley as a fodder crop under highly saline conditions. Saline irrigation waters with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 2·5, 4·0, 6·0 and 8·0 mmhos/cm respectively were used to irrigate test crops of barley over two growing seasons.

It was concluded that in general more highly saline water leads to a considerable increase in soil salinity even over a short period of growth, and a close control of soil salinity through leaching is required. Saline water with an EC of 4·0 mmhos/cm may be utilized without excessively high yield reductions if the soil salinity is well maintained. The saline waters with an EC of 6·0 mmhos/cm and 8·0 mmhos/cm may lead to yield reduction, and they require careful managmeent to control soil salinity build-up.

The selenium concentration of cereal grain and herbage from 131 farms in England and Wales was, in general, low: the proportions of samples with values below 0·03 mg/kg D.M. were 60% for grain (primarily barley, from 96 farms) and 39% for conserved herbage (primarily hay, from 131 farms). Values for fresh herbage from 12 farms were similar to those for conserved herbage. There were no significant differences in selenium concentration among herbage species. For all samples, those from the Cambridge area contained more selenium than those from other parts of England and Wales.

Growth rates were compared of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia), mung bean (Vigna radiata) and sorghum seedlings aged 2–5 weeks. The seedling growth rates were analysed in relation to leaf area development, net photosynthetic rate, nitrogen accumulation, nitrate reductase activity, and soluble protein content. Growth rates were highest in sorghum and lowest in C. cajan. Leaf area development was very fast in sorghum and very slow in C. cajan. Net photosynthetic rate of sorghum leaves was double that observed for the legume leaves. No significant difference was observed in nitrate reductase activity, nitrogen percentage or soluble protein content between sorghum and the legumes. In sorghum, early investment of assimilates into leaf development ensured a higher assimilation of carbon and nitrogen per plant. In the legumes, slow development of leaf area coupled with low photosynthetic rates probably resulted in slow growth of the seedlings. In the legume seedlings, vigour was related to the rates of leaf area expansion. Leaf area expansion rates were not related to the nitrogen status of the leaf in the species examined.

Daily supplements of dried Leucaena leaf meal (500 g/head) were offered for 3 weeks to steers in metabolism cages. The steers had previously been fed diets of oaten chaff (5 kg/head/day) ormclasses and urea (4·5 kg/head/day) with restricted forage (2 kg/head/day). Excretion rates of the primary degradation product of mimosine, 3-hydroxy-4(1H) pyridone (DHP) by steers fed the two diets were compared. These compounds appeared in urine on the 1st day after Leucaena feeding had commenced and output remained fairly constant after 4 days. Mean weekly urinary outputs (g) of DHP from steers fed the oaten chaff or molasses + urea diet were 13·45 and 7·50 respectively. These levels corresponded to 0·23 and 0·13 of the amounts ingested. When steers were fed the molasses + urea diet, DHP continued to appear in urine up to 5 days after Leucaena had been withdrawn from the diet. On the oaten chaff diet no DHP was detected after 3 days following withdrawal of Leucaena.

The effects of casein or formaldehyde-treated casein supplements on the output of urinary DHP by steers fed oaten chaff plus Leucaena was evaluated in a second experiment which ran concurrently. The animals were fed the test diets for 3 weeks before collections were made. Mean DHP outputs (g/day) from animals fed the control diet, control diet plus casein or control diet plus formaldehyde-treated casein were 1·89, 2·21 and 2·44 respectively.

These results confirm substantial degradation of DHP and that the extent of degradation can be affected by the dietary regime in which Leucaena is fed.

The paper describes attempts to test the following points—the comparative feeding value of Yellow Globe and Long Red mangels as constituents of a liberal fattening diet, the comparative feeding value of Golden Tankard and Long Red mangels, also as constituents of a fattening diet, and the comparative feeding value of Yellow Globe and Long Red mangels for store cattle.

The results point to the following conclusions:

The rates of fattening of individual animals vary so greatly that little reliance can be placed on the results of single experiments with the small numbers of animals commonly employed in feeding tests.

The feeding values of Long Reds and Yellow Globes were compared on seven occasions, and the results discussed according to the ordinary methods used in the theory of probabilities.

Three field trials with Italian ryegrass showed that solid N fertilizers usually gave larger yields than solutions containing 5% N but the differences were significant in only three of thirteen comparisons. More N was taken up from solid fertilizers than from solutions; the differences were not significant at 561b N/acre but were at 1121b N/acre. Grass given solutions had smaller percentage of N and the differences in the percentage of N were significant in eight of ten comparisons. In pot experiments with Italian ryegrass, solutions containing 3.3% N were less effective than solid fertilizers, but solutions containing 1.8% N were equally effective. Possible causes of solutions being less effective are discussed.

In a 2 × 4 factorial experiment, the laying performance of hens given diets with or without blood meal and four concentrations (0, 5·71, 11·43 and 17·14 g/kg) of added magnesium chloride was measured for 280 days. The inclusion of 50 g/kg blood meal in the laying diet reduced the rate of laying (P < 0·05), egg weight (P < 0·01), egg output (P < 0·01), food intake (P < 0·01), body weight gain (P < 0·01) and body weight at 457 days (P < 0·05). It increased the height of albumen (P < 0·05), Haugh unit score (P < 0·01) and shell colour intensity (P < 0·05) of fresh eggs. The inclusion of increasing dietary concentrations of magnesium chloride reduced (P < 0·01) the specific gravity of eggs but had no significant effect on any of the other egg quality or production characteristics. The dietary treatments had no significant effect on Haugh units of stored eggs.

The reproductive development and seed production characters of a Lolium multiflorum × Festuca pratensis tetraploid hybrid and a Lolium perenne × Festuca pratensis tetraploid hybrid were compared with those of their tetraploid parental cultivars. Experiments were carried out under glasshouse and natural conditions; single plants were studied as only small quantities of seed were available from the breeder. The lowtemperature/short-day requirements for inflorescence induction of the two hybrids were in between those of the corresponding parental species. The variance of the date at which vegetative primordia changed to the reproductive condition was greater in the hybrids than in the parental cultivars, but the variance of the dates of inflorescence emergence were similar for the hybrids and parental cultivars. Inflorescences ranged from the Lolium type with only sessile spikelets to the Festuca type with primary branches. Inner glumes, which are absent in the Lolium parents but present in Festuca pratensis, were found in the hybrids, though not in all spikelets. In the Lolium perenne × Festuca pratensis hybrid pollen release, potential pollen viability and floret fertility were low, but the Lolium multiflorum × Festuca pratensis hybrid produced large amounts of pollen with a higher potential viability and had floret fertilities similar to those of its two parental cultivars. There was sufficient variation in reproductive characters for further selection, particularly in the Lolium perenne × Festuca pratensis hybrid.

Botanical analyses of trials grazed at 3·6, 2·4, 1·2, 0·8 and 0·6 ha/300 kg animal for 4 years are detailed. The two heaviest grazing pressures encouraged Brachiaria decumbens, a high quality grass, at the expense of Themeda triandra and Hyparrhenia filipendula. Rotational grazing allowed the weed grass Cymbopogon afronardus to regenerate after clearing more rapidly than did continuous grazing.

Bullocks with oesophageal fistulas sampled pastures grazed at 2·4, 1·2 and 0·6 ha/animal at 4-weekly intervals for 12 months. The 0·6 ha/animal treatment was repeated on pasture cleared of the weed grass Cymbopogon afronardus. Cattle growth rates, both long term and at the time of sampling, were recorded.

Cattle growth rates were greatest at 2·4 ha/animal but fistula sampling demonstrated that the diet was significantly lower in CP and higher in CF than the more heavily stocked treatments, which is contrary to the normal pattern. It is concluded that the differences in cattle growth rates at the different stocking rates were due to differences in dry-matter intake rather than the recorded differences in diet quality. The higher CP in the diet at the heavier stocking rates is ascribed to the increase of B. decumbens in the diet.

An unexplained ceiling to cattle growth rates of ca. 0·5 kg/day, and a calculated drymatter intake of < 2·1% body weight/day, in the presence of unlimited forage of 10% CP and 55% apparent digestibility, makes it more economic to stock for maximum production per ha than per animal.

1. The results are presented of a survey of early cut hays, by the tripod and ground-cured methods, from fifteen ryegrass swards and six ryegrass-clover swards in Northern Ireland.

2. The effect of date of cutting on quality is discussed.

3. The losses in conservation at two centres included in this survey are presented. Losses of 15·9 and 13·3% are recorded for the tripod method.

4. A trial designed to produce high-quality hays from specially managed swards by these two methods is described. The results obtained in relation to conservation losses and the digestibilities of these hays are considered. Field losses of dry matter ranged from 3 to 16·5% for the tripod method and 9–27% for the ground-cured. The tripod hays had starch equivalents of 47, 48·2 and 51·5; those of the corresponding ground-cured hays were 41·5, 38·2 and 51·8.

5. It is suggested that the tripod method as applied to swards of the type used in the second experiment offers a means of securing a high degree of conservation.

Two uniformity trials were carried out, one using S. 22 and the other Irish Italian ryegrass. In both trials the plants were grown at 6 in spacing and were harvested in basic units of 1 yd. If no allowance was made for guard rows the smallest plots were the most efficient in that they required a smaller total area of ground and fewer plants to detect a specified difference. For comparative purposes, the size of trial required to detect a difference of 7% of the mean was used. Allowing for 1 guard row round each plot, 2 yd plots were as efficient as those of 1 yd and had the advantage of requiring fewer replications. The effects of plot and block shape were considerable. In general long narrow plots in short wide blocks were more efficient. The choice of plot and block shape is most important. For a given plot size a poor shape may be less than half as efficient as a good one.

A method is described for the determination of the fluorine content of basic slag.

The fluorine content and the citric solubility of a number of basic slags are compared.

Blood samples were taken at 9, 10 and 11 weeks of age from 230 male Hereford × Friesian calves, the progeny of 12 Hereford bulls. Concentrations of blood glucose, serum albumin, inorganic phosphate and sodium were measured and correlated with body weights and growth rates until slaughter at 19½ months of age.

Correlations between growth rates and glucose concentrations (0·44) and between growth rates and albumin concentrations (0·38) were observed until 4 months of age. Similar correlations between body weights and blood glucose or albumin concentrations persisted until 6 months of age. By 10 months, however, the correlations had begun to decline, and by slaughter they had become insignificant.

Correlations between growth rates and inorganic phosphate or sodium concentrations were smaller, and also decreased with age.

The effect of hypoglycaemia on growth rate was compared with the effect of enzootic pneumonia. Although the 10% of calves with the lowest glucose concentrations were growing 24% more slowly than the other calves at the time of sampling, this growth depression was not related to pneumonia, and they subsequently made up for most of the early loss of growth.

Three blood samples were also taken from 22 Hereford bulls. No significant correlations were observed between the blood composition of the bulls and the body weights or weight gains of their progeny.

In Part I of the current volume of this Journal Green and Ampt make certain assumptions regarding the factors which control the rate of flow of water and air through soils, the basis of which is that the channels in a soil may be regarded as a bundle of capillary tubes, and that the velocity of flow of a liquid will consequently conform to Poiseuille’s formula. Such an assumption cannot however be maintained. Poiseuille’s formula was deduced from the ascertained rate of flow of liquids through straight tubes of approximately uniform diameter; the latter being 1 mm. or so. The formula is not however really accurate even under these limited conditions, as was shown by Thorpe and Roger, who found it necessary to add the correction – ρV/8πlt. But the passages through the soil are not straight or of uniform diameter for any measurable distance, in fact they are wholly irregular, which Green and Ampt recognise, for they describe them as “irregular in area, length, direction and shape.” But this being the case, Poiseuille’s formula obviously cannot be expected to apply.

A field experiment was made with chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during the winters of 1984–5 and 1985–6 to study the effects of plant type and population density on growth and yield of chickpea. Cultivars BG 257, BG 261, BG 268 and BG 274 produced signficantly more grain with 1000 × 103 and 660 × 103 plants/ha, whereas the cultivar BG 209 produced the most at 500 × 103 plants/ha. Among the cultivars, BG 257 and BG 268 gave highest grain yield with 660 × 103 plants/ha.

Blood potassium and haemoglobin types were investigated in three breeds of sheep in India. Both high and low blood potassium types and all three haemoglobin types—A, B, and AB—were found to be present in two of the breeds examined, namely Bikaneri and Corriedale x Bikaneri. Mandia sheep had both potassium types but only two haemoglobin types—B and AB. Haemoglobin B and high potassium types predominated in all the three breeds; this would clearly point to the comparative suitability of these animals for relatively drier parts of India.

Of recent years a disease of root-crops known to farmers in North Wales is one in which the heart or core of the root is converted into a soft putrid mass but which leaves the rind and mature foliage intact. The disease is prone to appear on land treated with lime as a preventive against the roots being attacked by Plasmodiophora brassicae or when the land has received a heavy dressing of nitrogenous fertilizers. It is common knowledge that nitrogenous manures have a tendency to force the crop and so produce watery, sappy roots which easily fall prey to disease. Recently it was brought to the writer's notice by one of the County Organizers for Agriculture in Wales that some of the farmers in his area were strongly disinclined to lime the land for root-crops because this treatment was favourable to the appearance of “soft-rot.” There is probably some modicum of truth in this contention, for as will be seen below, the writer in the investigation of the present disease found that the organism isolated refused to grow on any media which were not neutral or alkaline. The writer observed and investigated this disease on a crop of white turnips grown on the farm of the University College of North Wales and the land here had received a dressing of nitrate of soda. A casual glance at the crop did not show anything unusual, in fact judging from the amount of green foliage the crop looked very healthy. Closer examination however showed that the very young leaves at the centre of the crown had been destroyed thus forming a tiny wound into which one could push a probe without obstruction to the depth of some three or four inches. The fully expanded leaves very effectively concealed the wound and the disease seemed evidently confined to the internal tissues leaving the foliage and rind quite firm even up to time of harvesting the crop. Indeed the extent of damage was only fully revealed at the time of lifting when the harvester's knife lopped off the foliage only to discover that the roots were bad.

A study using 1150 lambs to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of some weight and fleece traits was carried out on coarse-wool Barki sheep. The weight traits were birth, weaning, yearling weights and daily gains whereas fleece traits included kemp score, staple length and greasy-fleece weight.

Heritability estimates of weight traits were within the range 0·25–0·30. Those of fleece traits were 0·16, 0·21 and 0·43. The repeatability estimates of fleece traits were 0·18, 0·38 and 0·53 for staple length, greasy-fleece weight and kemp score respectively.

Phenotypic correlations between body weight and fleece traits were mostly positive. Genetic correlations between greasy-fleece weight and body weights were mostly positive and of medium values. Those between kemp score and body weights were mostly negative, ranging from medium-high to high.

Wool production from different flocks of Ossimi, Rahmani and Barki Egyptian local sheep, raised at six different locations in the country was studied. Different genetic parameters for greasy fleece weight of the three breeds were estimated.

Location was of significant effect on annual greasy fleece weight of Rahmani sheep only. With the adjustment for differences in yield percentages, differences in clean wool production from one location to another were slight for the three breeds. Age of ewe was of highly significant effect on annual greasy fleece weight.

Heritability estimates of annual greasy fleece weight of the ewes were found to be generally low in the three breeds (range 0·00–0·34). The estimates differed markedly with age; those of the yearling fleece weight of Rahmani and Barki ewes were the highest, being 0–19 and 0–34, respectively.

Repeatability estimates of annual greasy fleece weight were also low, being 0·11–0·04 and 0·29 for Ossimi, Rahmani and Barki ewes, respectively.

Estimates of genetic correlation between yearling greasy fleece weight of the Ossimi and Rahmani ewes and their weaning and yearling body weights were high and positive. Those between annual greasy fleece weight of the ewes and their reproductive performance traits differed greatly in the two breeds.
