The current study evaluated the nutritional impact of crude glycerine (CG) supplementation to wethers fed only forage grass. Eight Polwarth wethers were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square. Treatments consisted of no CG (control, CON) or intra-ruminal infusion of CG at daily rates of 0·5, 1·5 or 3·0 ml/kg body weight (BW). In each Latin Square, four animals were fed Avena strigosa and four were fed Cynodon sp. hay ad libitum. The actual concentration of glycerol in diet was similar for both forage types and varied from 21 to 364 g/kg dry matter. No interactions between forage type and CG treatments were detected and no differences were observed between the CON and 0·5 CG treatment for most variables. Both the organic matter (OM) and the digestible OM intake decreased linearly at increased levels of CG infusion, whereas no treatment effect was observed on OM and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility. The duodenal flow of rumen microbial nitrogen (N) was not affected, whereas the duodenal flow of α-amino N decreased linearly at increased levels of CG infusion. In conclusion, CG supplementation at a rate of up to 0·5 ml/kg BW/day did not change the nutrient supply whereas greater amounts of CG supplementation negatively impacted the nutrient supply to wethers fed only grass forage. The forage digestibility, in turn, was not affected by CG supplementation.

The experiment, conducted at Bahia, Brazil, from May to August 2010, aimed to evaluate the nitrogen (N) balance, urea excretion and microbial protein synthesis in lactating goats fed pelleted concentrates with the addition of crude protein (CP), obtained by replacing alfalfa hay with soybean meal. The diets consisted of different levels of CP and 200 g of roughage (Tifton 85 hay)/kg. Maize and mesquite bran were used as the energy source, with maize replaced by mesquite bran in the ratio of 1·7:1. Eight female Saanen goats were used, confined in individual pens and allocated to a 4 × 4 Latin square design. The N balance in the body was positive, and loss of body weight (–0·03 g/day) was observed for the diet with 190 g CP/kg. The concentration (mg/dl) of urea in urine, milk and blood plasma was positively influenced in a linear form, and the highest rate of increase was found in urine, with 2 mg/dl for every 10 g CP/kg added to the diet. The microbial protein synthesis was not affected, but the diets reduced the microbial protein (44 g/day) and its ruminal production efficiency (30 g/kg total digestible nutrients). The levels above 190 g of CP are not recommended because of the energy expenditure required to excrete the urea.

It was aimed to simultaneously study standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan (Trp) and lysine (Lys) for gilts. A digestibility assay was previously conducted to determine the SID amino acid in the basal diet (low levels of SID Trp and Lys). Sixty-four gilts (15.04 ± 1.44 kg) were allotted to 16 diets in a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement (1.55, 1.85, 2.15 and 2.45 g/kg SID Trp and 9.72, 11.12, 12.52 and 13.92 g/kg SID Lys) with four replicates per treatment. Performance, longissimus muscle (LM), backfat thickness (BF) and blood variables were evaluated. An interaction was observed for G:F, and by response surface model, the optimum Trp level was achieved at 2.15 g/kg (0.159 g/MJ of ME). A quadratic effect of Trp was observed on body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG); the daily feed intake increased linearly as Trp increased. The optimum Trp levels of 2.25 and 2.24 g/kg were estimated for BW and ADG, respectively. The BF increased with increasing levels of Trp. There was a quadratic and linear effect of Trp and Lys, respectively, on the LM, in which the optimum Trp level was determined as 2.05 g/kg in the diet. Plasma urea nitrogen decreased as Trp and Lys levels increased. Using estimates provided by response surface, maximized G:F ratio was obtained at 2.15 g SID Trp/kg of diet and at least 13.92 g SID Lys/kg of diet is necessary to optimize the G:F for 15–30 kg gilts, providing a Trp:Lys ratio of 15.4:100.

Chemical-mutagen treatment of Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata A. Braun) line C-101 seeds (which contained about 441 g/kg C22[ratio ]1) led to isolation of a mutant, L-935, which contained about 190 g/kg erucic acid (intermediate C22[ratio ]1) in the seed oil. The objective was to determine the inheritance of the intermediate C22[ratio ]1 level in this mutant. The mutant L-935 was reciprocally crossed to C-101 and to the mutant line L-2890 (which contained 112 g/kg C22[ratio ]1; low). The F1, F2 and BC1F1 generations were obtained. Cytoplasmic effects were not observed in any of the crosses. The analysis of the fatty acid composition in the F2 populations from the crosses of L-935 with C-101 revealed a segregation pattern fitting a ratio 1[ratio ]2[ratio ]1 for intermediate, high and very high C22[ratio ]1 content. The segregation patterns fitted a one-locus (designated M2) model with two alleles (M2 and mi) and with partial dominance of high over intermediate C22[ratio ]1 content. The segregating generations of the crosses L-935×L-2890 showed a strong transgressive segregation with C22[ratio ]1 values ranged from 1·3–406·5 g/kg. The analyses of the F2, BC1F1 and F3 generations indicated that the combination of alleles at two loci, M1 and M2 controlled the transgressive segregation for C22[ratio ]1 content. The proposed genotypes (C22[ratio ]1 content) for each parent were as follows: L-935 (190 g/kg 22[ratio ]1)=MMmimiEEEE; L-2890 (112 g/kg C22[ratio ]1)=mmmmEEEE; and C-101 (441 g/kg C22[ratio ]1)=MMMMEEEE.

Seed priming is a pre-sown treatment and it is often used to improve the performance of plants in any environment, especially germination. In the current study, various concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) were used to evaluate its role for the induction of physiological variations within seven different wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes. Two experiments were conducted during 2013 and 2014 and the data were statistically analysed for significance. All these genotypes after treatment with sodium nitroprusside (SNP) as NO donor at 10−4 and 10−5 M concentrations were sown following randomized complete block design with triplicates in the fields of District Muzaffarabad, Pakistan. The concentration of NO at 10−4 M showed promising results and most of the studied characters were found improved compared to control. Wheat varieties primed with 10−4 M SNP showed highest germination speed and germination percentage. NARC-2011 and Uqab-2002 showed much improvement in physiological attributes at both concentrations of NO priming. However, Uqab-2002 and Punjab-2011 showed a significant increase in chlorophyll contents and leaf moisture content with 10−4 and 10−5 M SNP priming compared to control. Highest relative water content was observed within unprimed Lasani, whereas the relative injury was found to be decreased at 10−4 M SNP primed Faisalabad-2008. Wheat varieties Punjab-2011 and Faisalabad-2008 showed the highest increase in grain yield and biological yield by 10−4 M SNP. Hence, it is concluded that sowing of crops after priming at 10−4 M NO concentration can improve the germination, biochemistry and physiology that ultimately lead to an increase in crop yield.

In view of the celebration of the ‘International Year of Millets,’ millets are popularizing sustainable agricultural output amid challenging climates and nourishing adequately as food and feed. The extent of scientific intervention is the foundation for designing, promoting and popularizing neglected crops on social platforms. Planning future directions and adaptive strategies largely require regular evaluation of research efforts to identify hotspots and research gaps, as identified in the present study by creating a robust text-mining approach that integrates scientometrics using PubMed citation data. Keyword mining reveals that India and China are the leading publication centres on millets, possibly due to their large proportion of cultivation and indigenous nature. It further reveals that the pearl millet is the predominant one, followed by foxtail and finger millet, suggesting that most research is confined to them only; however, other millets, still have a research gap in comparison. The word abiotic stress is associated with high frequency in millet research due to its adaptive nature amid climate change. Thematic representation explored the novel concept of millet's utility as a probiotic and millet bran to ensure nutrient–cereal properties based on the persistency of keywords throughput research progression; however, incurious consumption is associated with harmful ochratoxin. Bio-concept mining and knowledge graph generation divided the millet research output into four large domains, which provides a largely covered bio-concepts for millet research and co-concurrence of emerging bio-concepts to intense progress and finds an adequate literature gap to improve millet research for sustained growth and equilibrate biodiversity.

The 65 spring and 14 winter cultivars of barley on the 1981 U.K. National List were examined electrophoretically for allozyme variants of phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI). Two different banding patterns were observed, a ‘fast’ and a ‘slow’ migrating type. With the exception of six spring cultivars in which the ‘slow’ type was found, all the cultivars were classified as ‘fast’. F2 progeny of crosses between ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ plants were used to interpret the banding patterns as resulting from the dimeric isozymes of two alleles (allozymes) each producing a triple band pattern, the faster two bands of which were considered to be ‘secondary’ or artefact bands. With the notable exception of Dragon and its sister line RPB 1115–75 all of the other ‘slow’ cultivars and breeders' selections were found to have the ‘slow’ cultivar Midas in their breeding history. Midas was bred using material from three ‘fast’ cultivars and a γ-ray mutant strain, the irradiation which produced this strain being regarded as the likely cause of the ‘slow’ isozyme. Unlike all the other cultivars tested, Midas was found to be a mixture of genotypes comprising 73% ‘slow’ and 27% ‘fast’ plants, a ratio which was most probably due to founder effects caused by the breeders' selection programme. In the light of the present investigation and other reports it is concluded that it is not an uncommon occurrence to find plants with different electrophoretic banding patterns within inbred cultivars.

This result has serious implications for cultivar registration as there is a possibility of selecting electrophoretically distinct plants from within existing registered cultivars. It is concluded therefore that the protection afforded to plant breeders under Plant Breeders' Rights schemes could be seriously threatened by the use of electrophoretic characters for cultivar registration except in some specific incidences where it may be possible to apply appropriate safeguards. The implications for plant breeders of the existence of isozymes of PGI, of possibly different efficiencies, within commercial cultivars of the genus Hordeum are also discussed.

Nine experiments in the East of Scotland were completed in the years 1966, 1967 and 1968 to test the response of potatoes grown for ware to five levels of a 15½–15½–21 fertilizer applied at rates of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 cwt per acre.

1. Mean yield of ware tubers increased up to the highest fertilizer level.

2. Mean yield of small tubers increased only up to the 8 cwt per acre level and then declined.

3. Dry matter content of ware tubers decreased with increasing levels of fertilizer.

4. Increasing fertilizer levels lowered soil pH. At one site this was associated with a significant reduction of common scab on the tubers.

Various carcass measurements were obtained from 216 Hereford steers and evaluated in an attempt to find traits or combinations of traits which accurately estimate carcass composition. Carcass weight and trimmed retail cuts from the round proved to be the best single estimators of kilograms of retail cuts. Prediction equations were developed using carcass weight, trimmed retail cuts from the round, longissimus dorsi area, measures of fat thickness at the 12th rib, untrimmed round weight and weight of kidney, heart and pelvic fat in various combinations. Eighty-four to 94 % of the total variation in actual kilograms of retail cuts could be accounted for by using these equations.

Thirteen experiments on spring cereals were carried out from 1952 to 1954 to compare broadcasting with combine-drilling for nitrophosphate and for mixtures of superphosphate plus equivalent nitrogen. Broadcast nitrophosphate was of little value; drilled dressings were much more effective. Superphosphate drilled with the seed produced consistently higher yields than broadcast superphosphate. Superphosphate plus equivalent nitrogen gave higher average yields than nitrophosphate both when broadcast and when drilled. When the dressings were broadcast, superphosphate was markedly superior to nitrophosphate, but when the fertilizers were drilled with the seed, average yields with superphosphate were only a little higher than with nitrophosphate.

Nitrophosphates may be substituted for mixtures containing water-soluble phosphorus for cereals providing that they are drilled with the seed. Since nitrophosphates do not make cereals grow as rapidly as does superphosphate, even when drilled with the seed, such materials may give poor crops in conditions where the plants need a rapid start. The nitrophosphate tested contained rather more than one-quarter of its phosphorus in water-soluble form; the improved early growth observed where nitrophosphate was combine-drilled may have been largely due to this fraction of the fertilizer.

In our previous papers we have shown that the black pigment found in the mammary tissue of sows of various coloured breeds is related to the colour rather than to the sexual condition of the pig. We have also pointed out that this conclusion is contrary to the statements of bacon curers who rely on the presence of this pigment for an indication as to whether or not a sow is ‘on heat.’ Their method of testing the condition of the sow has been described by us in a former paper. It follows from the assumption made by the bacon curers that pigment should not be present in the ‘belly pieces’ of spayed sows (or to be strictly accurate, of sows spayed in early life, before the mammary ducts and glands have undergone development).

Differences between sites accounted for a large proportion of the variation in the oil percentage of cotton seed from variety and agronomic trials conducted in Northern Nigeria but were not consistent between seasons. Reduced oil percentages from the drier areas of the north and from later sowings suggested that length of season is an important factor but insect attack and differences in the amounts of nitrogen, potash and boron applied to the soil also contributed to the variation. Application of insecticide, potash and boron increased and nitrogen decreased oil percentages. The latter effect usually resulted from an increase in seed size without a corresponding increase in oil content. The variation in the oil percentages of commercial varieties derived from the same Nigerian Allen stock and the relatively small interactions between varieties and environments suggested that this character might be improved by selection.

Pieces of proximal colon taken from lambs during the first 2 weeks of postnatal life were incubated in vitro for measurement of short-circuit current and unidirectional glucose fluxes.

The short-circuit current of colons taken from newborn and 1-day-old lambs was increased significantly in the presence of 5 mM D-glucose. This is taken as evidence for the presence of an active transport system for monosaccharides in this tissue. No such effect was seen using colons taken from 2-week-old lambs.

Direct measurement of glucose transport showed a net absorption to take place across the proximal colon of newborn and 1-day-old lambs. There was no net movement across colons taken from lambs aged 1 week and over. Essentially similar results were obtained when measuring the amount of glucose influx inhibited by 10−5 M phloridzin.

Colonic decline of glucose transport follows a time course different from that reported previously for the small intestine. It probably arises from rapid maturation of the colonic mucosa postnatally rather than from any gradual absence of substrate occurring during rumen development.

It was observed in a recently concluded study (O. O. BalogunandB. L. Fetuga, unpublished data) that methionine and palm-oil supplementation to a cassava flour-soya-bean meal diet encouraged satisfactory growth, efficiency of live-weight gain, nitrogen retention and carcass quality of weanling pigs. Our earlier reports (Balogun & Fetuga, 1981; Balogun, Fetuga & Oyenuga, 1982) also indicated that the muscles of pigs responded differently to dietary methionine and lysine and that the quantitative requirements of these amino acids for maximum development of the muscles were at variance with the methionine or lysine requirements for maximum growth performance and nitrogen retention.

Blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cav., one of the major foliar diseases of rice, appears sometimes in a devastating form in the seedling stage. The angles subtended by leaves may affect the establishment of the pathogen. Ono (1965) observed that leaf angles of rice plants, among many other factors, influenced deposition of spores. Gangopadhyay & Chattopadhyay (1974) found that brown spot disease (Helminthosporium oryzae) incidence in rice increased with increase in leaf angles. The present study is intended to find out the role of leaf angles in rice on the incidence of blast disease at the seedling stage.

The incidence of oestrus in pregnant ewes has been reported previously by Williams et al. (1956) and Bichard et al. (1974). However, their investigations were not designed specifically to study such a phenomenon and the number of animals employed was small. None of the factors affecting oestrus occurrence was investigated. Under experimental conditions, vasectomized or aproned rams are sometimes used after the removal of fertile rams to detect embryonic failure in pregnant ewes. It is of interest to check on the validity of this method. This study was carried out to obtain an estimate of the incidence of oestrus in early pregnancy using relatively large numbers of fat-tailed Barki and imported Hungarian Merino ewes and to investigate the effect of year, breed of ewe and age of ewe on its occurrence.

The comparative effects of very heavy dressings of ammonium sulphate and urea on the growth of established plants of white clover (S100) have been studied in pot culture. Five applications each of 263 kg N/ha were applied over 9 months in 3 different ways (i) direct contact of the fertilizers with the leaves, (ii) only with the stolons or surface roots or (iii) applied 12·5 cm below the soil surface.

The ammonium sulphate broadcast over the leaves reduced the growth of the clover whilst urea under the same conditions caused temporary damage with very little reduction in dry weight compared with the control. When the ammonium sulphate was applied to the soil surface or 12·5 cm below, there was appreciable reduction in dry weight but less than when the fertilizer was in contact with the leaves. Under the same conditions, urea did not reduce growth.

The pH of the soil fell to about 4·6 with ammonium sulphate (control 6·1) but only slightly with urea.

Root development was not affected by urea but greatly reduced with ammonium sulphate. With both fertilizers the root nodules were very pale in colour and few in number compared with the control.

Urea can be an inefficient nitrogen source, compared with ammonium nitrate, on calcareous soils (Ernst & Massey, 1960) and under dry conditions (Murphy, 1978) as a result of ammonia volatilization. However, the interaction between factors which can affect the performance of urea is not clearly understood. The risk of ammonia volatilization would appear to be higher on light soils with a low cation exchange capacity than on heavier soils (Fenn & Hossner, 1985). Field trials in the Netherlands indicated that a minimum of 5 mm of rain must fall within 2 days of application to give good dry-matter yields with urea (Van Burg, Dilz & Prins, 1982). In addition ammonia volatilization has been affected by initial soil moisture content in some studies (Fenn & Escarzaga, 1977) but not in others (Gasser, 1964).
