The effects of plant growth habit (erect versus spreading and flowering pattern) on the resistance of cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., to the legume pod borer, Maruca testulalis Geyer, were studied in Nigeria. Five cowpea cultivars of known agronomic and architectural characteristics were selected for the study: TVu 946, IT82D-716, VITA-3, Oloka local and Kamboinse local. Seed and pod damage assessment values were better in profuse flowering than in non-profuse flowering cultivars and in erect cultivars than in spreading cultivars. Best performances were obtained from TVu 946 (profuse flowering and erect resistant), and worst results from Oloka local (spreading susceptible) and VITA-3 (susceptible non-profuse) respectively. Erect and profuse flowering cowpea cultivars are proposed as having good architectural components for reducing M. testulalis damage to cowpea. The implications of architectural variations in cowpea are discussed.

A preliminary taxonomic review of cassava green spider mites, Mononychellus spp., from their South American topotype and from several African countries indicates that the dorsal central body setae is not a reliable and stable diagnostic character as it was found to widely vary. The taxonomie implication of this is discussed.

A total of 2256 germplasm accessions, 3000 advanced generation breeding lines and 150 released varieties of rice were screened under artificial infestation in the greenhouse. Among these, 15 new germplasm accessions, 50 breeding lines derived from 16 crosses and 15 released varieties were resistant. Antibiosis was the predominant resistance mechanism; antixenosis affecting oviposition was noted in 33 resistant varieties. Biochemical composition of a set of resistant varieties along with susceptible checks, revealed that nitrogen content of seven test varieties was significantly higher than that of the susceptible checks, while in other six varieties it was lower than the checks. Similarly, eight of the resistant varieties had considerably higher percentage of polyphenolic compounds in basal stem portion, but seven other cultivars showed significantly lower concentration as compared to susceptible checks. Thus, it was apparent that there was no clear trend among the resistant cultivars as a group in relation to quantitative differences of chemical components analysed.

Assessments were made of the applicability of various methods of monitoring tsetse populations for control projects in Niger and Mozambique. Biconical traps proved most effective for sampling G. tachinoides in riparian habitats of Niger, and vehicle patrols for G. morsitans morsitans in savannah woodland of Mozambique. Comparisons are drawn between the various methods in terms of species, sex and physiological composition of catch, patterns of diel activity, and detection of fly concentrations.

A high level of resistance to chlorpyrifos has been detected in Culex quinquefasciatus larvae from Dar es Salaam. To study the impact of this resistance on the routine anti-larval spraying programme with this chemical, pit latrines, cess pits and soakage pits were examined regularly after spraying. Larvae were eliminated immediately after spraying, but in most cases they re-appeared about 2 weeks later. Bio-assays with susceptible and resistant larvae in water samples from the pits showed that in most cases there would have been sufficient insecticide residue for at least 10 weeks to kill a susceptible population, but resistant larvae could survive in the water from about 2 weeks after spraying. Chemical analysis showed that the water was toxic to resistant larvae so long as it contained about 0.02 mg/l chlorpyrifos. These observations might have suggested that the routine spraying programme every 10 weeks would be having very little impact on the population now that resistance has evolved. However, in fact, adult densities in houses in a year with spraying on schedule were much less than in years when many sprayings were missed owing to shortage of supplies. Thus the regular spraying programme still apppears to have a beneficial effect.

Maize is the single most important food cereal in eastern and southern Africa. Yield levels, however, are among the lowest in the world. Among the major constraints limiting production are the insect pests. Objective assessment of damage and losses caused by these pests are lacking in several countries within the region. This paper discusses some of the methodologies available, and how they can be used to estimate the losses caused by insect pests under different situations. It emphasizes the need for standardization of the methodologies, so that information generated from different countries can be compared. This will promote collective action to combat the pest menace and increase food security.

Combining ability of resistance to the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata and spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus in grain sorghum was analysed on a seven-parents diallel in a field trial at the ICIPE Mbita Point Field Station, western Kenya during the 1990 long rainy season. Lines with best performance for each of the four measured resistance parameters were also found to be the best general combiners. Resistance to leaf damage and number of holes/metre were controlled by additive gene effects whereas resistance to deadheart and stem tunnelling were controlled by additive and non-additive gene effects. Parents IS-1044, IS-12308 and IS-2269 with their good level of resistance, and desirable general combining ability (GCA) effects are proposed for utilisation as resistant combiners in breeding programmes for shootfly and stemborer resistance in grain sorghum.

A new aspirator is proposed for the collection of springtails (Collembola) and other small arthropods. It is hand operated, safe and efficient to use.

A method of formulating granules from an acetone extract fraction of the fruit of Melia volkensii, a Kenyan tree known to possess insecticidal properties, was developed. The granules were tested for toxicity to third and fourth instars of Aedes aegypti L. Some acute physiological effects were observed within 24 hours of adding the granules to water as larval food. A mortality of 95% was achieved on various developmental stages of the mosquito after 12 days, with only 5% adult emergence being recorded.

The effect of topical application and oral administration of diflubenzuron on the feeding budget in the fifth instar larva of Papilio demoleus has been studied. The LD50 and LC50 values of diflubenzuron were 13.50 and 9.00 μg/larva/48 hr respectively. Topical application was found more efficacious in producing 50% mortality at a comparatively minimum dose of 9.00 μg. The growth efficiency was reduced by 44.54% in oral administration and 38.19% in topical application at the highest sublethal dose over that of control larvae. Not only the growth of the larvae of P. demoleus was inhibited, but the adults showed morphological deformities.

Studies were conducted at Mtwapa, in the coastal area of Kenya, during the long and short rains of 1999 and 2000 to evaluate interaction of mortality factors in lowering Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) populations in diverse agroecosystems. Treatments consisted of hedgerows of leucaena only, gliricidia only, alternating rows of leucaena and gliricidia, and three plots without trees. During the cropping seasons, maize was planted between the hedgerows while a row of cowpea was planted between the rows of maize. One of the plots without trees was planted to an intercrop of maize and cowpea. The remaining two plots without trees were planted to maize alone, one of which was mulched. The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. There was no evidence of enhanced mortality in the more diverse systems indicating that the vegetation structure and cultural treatments studied did not enhance activity levels of C. partellus mortality factors. The highest mortality occurred in the early and medium larval stages in all treatments. This mortality was attributable to ‘disappearance’, which represented mortality from sources other than parasitism. The total real generation mortality showed that from the initial cohort of first and second instar larvae, less than 10% of C. partellus survived to adult stage under field conditions in all the treatments. Mortality by Cotesia sesamiae Cameron and Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) was very minimal, indicating the parasitoids were not important mortality factors of C. partellus under the cropping systems studied. Their effects were also not influenced by the cropping systems studied.

The use of incompatible males (IM) of (A) mating type to suppress the Iraqi (B) strain of Ephestia cautella, when the release ratio was 80:1:1 (A males: B males: B females, respectively), brought about a highly successful protection of uncovered loose dates against infestation with (B) strain in a simulated date store. Surprisingly the protection effect of IMs lasted for 230 days which commercially covers almost the whole period of date storage.

Since strain A males are believed to compete poorly against wild strain B males, the competitiveness of F1 males was measured in order to determine if they might be promising candidates for subsequent trials of the control of E. cautella by the release of incompatible males.

The use of fish meal and detergent water has been shown to be simple, economic and reliable for sampling of shootfly populations. Various mixtures of fish meal with other ingredients were evaluated. The most potent mixture was fish meal-yeast-ammonium sulphide, but generally fish meal alone was adequate and the most readily available attractant. The attractance of fish meal was found to be related to its degradation; it increased from the first to the third or fourth day, and then decreased. The chemicals responsible for the attractance of fish meal have yet to be identified, but in all probability they may be the amines resulting from biodegradation of the meal.

The effects of various concentrations of Neem Azal-T and Neem Azal-T/S as natural insecticides on the biology and percentage mortality of adult Aphis craccwora Koch were studied under laboratory conditions. Both extracts had an aphicidal effect against the adults and significantly decreased their fecundities and longevities. Addition of synergists such as ethyl oleate, sesame oil and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) improved the aphicidal effects of both insecticides. The biological activity of Neem Azal-T/S only could be enhanced with suitable additives as they adversely affected the fecundity and longevity in comparison to the extract alone. Addition of CaCO3 to the above extracts had no clear effect on either neem seed extract formulation.

The relationship between seasonal numbers of outbreaks of African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) in Kenya and Tanzania, and early season rainfall in source areas has been examined using records for 21 seasons. Significant inverse relationships were found between numbers of Kenya outbreaks and early season rains in the Kisumu area, and between numbers of Tanzania outbreaks and early season rains in the Morogoro and Mtwara areas. Total Kenya and Tanzania outbreak numbers were significantly inversely related to early season rainfall for 8 areas combined. These results suggest that early season rainfall totals, either from specific likely source areas or countrywide, could be used in January to give a seasonal forecast of likely numbers of armyworm outbreaks during the rest of the season. Seasons with more than average numbers of outbreaks often follow poor early season rains and visa versa. Further work is needed to establish biological causes of this apparent relationship.

The phytochemical ptumbagin, isolated from Plumbago zeylanica L., was applied in 2 and 5 μl doses of 0.1% concentration on the surface of Dysdercus koenigii F. adults and its effect on the haemocytes of the bug, studied by transmission electron microscopy. All the five haemocyte types viz. the prohaemocyte, plasmatocyte, granular haemocyte, oenocytoid, and the adipohaemocyte are affected within a period of 24–48 hr. The effect begins with an acute state of vacuolization of the cells and a gradual destruction of the organelles, followed by dissolution of the plasma membrane and passing out of the internal organelles, like the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. This phenomenon is responsible for a consistent elimination of the haemocytes from the blood, leading to lowering of the resistance and mortality of the insects.

Epidinocarsis lopezi proved to be an efficient biological control agent of the cassava mealybug (CM), Phenacoccus manihoti, despite apparently low parasitization rates. Laboratory experiments indicated that its killing power at higher temperatures was two to three times higher than the per cent mummy formation suggested. Following an attack by an E. lopezi female some CM hosts were killed through host feeding and some through successful development of the parasitoid larva, processes which both benefit the parasitoid. If the host was found unsuitable, no egg was laid, and the CM survived the attack. Other CM died from the wasp attack without forming a mummy. This mortality is attributed to mutilation and unsuccessful larval development of E. lopezi. Most ovipositions induced a defence reaction by the host that lead to melanization. This process involved mainly wound tissue, sometimes partial encapsulation of the tail end of the parasitoid larva, and infrequently complete and fatal encapsulation of the parasitoid larva.

Comparative field studies were conducted during the rainy and dry seasons at the Mbita Point Field Station of ICIPE in southwestern Kenya, to investigate the pattern and rate of dispersal of Aphis craccivora on aphid-resistant (ICV-12) and aphid-susceptible (ICV-1) cowpea cultivars in relation to key weather factors. The effects of the dispersal trends on crop performance and aphid population dynamics were analysed. Treatments consisted of initial aphid releases at the north, south, west, east and centre of test plots and uninfested controls maintained on plants for 22 days. Parameters recorded included: pattern (direction of spread of aphids) and rate (number of aphid-infested plants at a given time) in test plots; crop growth and yields and associated factors such as incidence of sooty mould and plant mortality, and aphid density and associated factors, including the incidence of natural enemy species, particularly coccinellids. Dispersal was fastest when releases were made in the west, north and centre of plots, and resulted in adveVse effects on ICV-1 growth and yields. Infestations of ICV-12 did not significantly affect crop performance. There was an apparent direct, positive relationship between wind direction and pattern of spread of aphid infestations, but this pattern was more apparent during the rainy season, when wind speeds were higher, than during the dry season. The incidence of natural enemy species correlated with the spread of aphid infestations, while the abundance of coccinellids correlated with aphid density.

In the Ecuadorian cloud forest, males of the parasitoid braconid wasp Napo townsendi Shaw displayed facultative lekking, appearing both singly and in groups of 2–7 on the leaf tops of various plant species. To attract females, they constantly employed a stereotypical, spread-winged calling behaviour, apparently releasing a sex pheromone combed from the lateral metasomal exocrine glands and applied to the wings and hind legs. Aggregated males used the same posture in conspecific agonistic displays, often leading to physical fighting. While female wasps were attracted to and mated with displaying singletons, they also made a choice among aggregated males. When females approached, males vibrated their wings in a brief courtship and mounted. Details of copulation behaviour, which lasted on an average of 3–4 min, are described. Without apparent physical weaponry, the displaying wasps successfully warded off attacks from an assortment of predatory arthropods, particularly salticid spiders. We present case studies of repeated unsuccessful predation attempts by salticids. Here, we postulate that calling and release of sex pheromone may double as both an intrasexual agonistic display and an aposematic advisory to predators that the wasps employ a chemical defence.

A comparison was made of the relative abundance of three species of black-fly pupae colonising three natural substrates in the River Assob, in central Nigeria. Simulium hargreavesi, S. squamosum and S. vorax preferred trailing roots, whereas S. cervicomutum, S. unicomutum and S. impukane preferred dead leaves and to a lesser extent, rocks.

In order to see whether this was a preference between cylindrical and flat surfaces, polythene strips were compared with polythene strings and a smooth surface was compared with a rough one. Results are presented for the three most abundant species S. squamosum, S. hargreavesi and S. cervicomutum. All markedly avoided the rough string. S. squamosum and S. hargreavesi preferred smooth strings, whereas S. cervicomutum had no significant preference between smooth strips and strings (although slightly preferring strips). These findings are discussed in relation to natural habitats and sampling bias.
