The spatial distribution of the eggs and larvae of Anaphe venata Butler within canopies of its host, Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum situated at Araromi Village northeast of Ibadan was determined. Sampling branches of T. scleroxylon once in a spiral from base of canopy upwards was sufficient in determining the distribution of eggs and larvae of A. venata. Although the differences in the mean count of egg masses and larval groups in the lower, middle and upper canopy levels were not significant, the highest percentage of egg masses and larvae occurred on the tips of branches in the lower canopy. Sampling studies on the developmental stages of A. venata may therefore be done at the lower canopy level for best precision. Eggs and larvae are aggregated while the larval dispersion on the host suggest photo-positivity. The use of mounted, motorised elevators is proposed in order to enhance efficiency of sampling and avoid destructive sampling.

Paper discusses five substantive issues affecting farmer participation (FP) in the development of integrated tick management (ITM). These are the concepts, methods, incentives for and constraints to farmer participation (FP), and finally, case study material illustrating how FP has contributed to the research and development of integrated tick management.

Mobility of tsetse flies is influenced by various factors including the search for a blood-meal. Field observations on the feeding behaviour of tsetse are difficult. The use of bait animals for experimental purposes may indicate food sources but not host selection under natural conditions. Availability and density of a particular potential host species in a tsetse habitat can influence the feeding habit of the latter. Flies are capable of adapting to new host species in the absence of the usual ones. Host selection might be due principally to availability of host(s) and not based on true preference. Tsetse flies respond to visual stimuli from moving objects. Their shape, colour and size are important factors eliciting visual response. Whether these factors are distinguished separately or in combinations is not clear. Odour emanating from live hosts causes up-wind olfactory response towards the source(s), resulting in actual landing on test targets even when the hosts are out of sight. The components of odour have not been isolated. It is therefore doubtful if host selection can be associated with odour, as this might imply that tsetse can differentiate the odours of the different potential hosts. The difficulties in ascertaining true host selection by tsetse are discussed to stimulate further investigations.

The repellent ‘Simno’, which is made in Ghana from edible plant products, was tested in two forms as base-oil and a cream. Biting catches were made by bait subjects with one leg only smeared with a measured amount of ‘Simno’. The catches from each leg were then compared. The base-oil was only tested against Simulium damnosum s.l. It was found to be 100% effective for over 10 hr even after 2 years storage. The repellent cream worked well against a biting midge and various mosquitoes as well as S. damnosum s.l, but was seldom completely effective and the potency varied between samples. Nevertheless, one sample retained its full potency after 2 years storage. ‘Simno’ repellent is convenient to use (especially the cream) and is well accepted by the local people. The active ingredients of'Simno’ need to be identified.

Studies were conducted to compare adult longevity, number of host eggs parasitized and temporal pattern of oviposition of four species of Trichogramma, T. brasiliensis Ashmead, T. chilonis Ishii, T. minutum Riley and T. japonicum Ashmead. Parasitoids were reared on eggs of Corcyra cephalonica St. at 27 ± 2°C and 60 ± 5% r.h. With the exception of T. chilonis, females lived longer than males. The only thelytokous species, T. brasiliensis had the highest longevity and fecundity. However, T. chilonis was observed to lay more than 50% of its eggs on its first day of emergence. Of the four species, T. japonicum exhibited the shortest longevity and lowest fecundity.

Damage to the antennae was equally common in kings and queens, and was randomly distributed. Damage to the legs was commoner in queens than in kings, and was not randomly distributed. Damage to many or all the legs of one individual may be symptomatic of degeneration due to age.

The chitin synthesis inhibitor lefenuron [N-{2,5-dichloro-4-(1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3-hexafluoropropoxy)-phenylaminocarbonyl}-2, 6-difluorobenzamide] was found to have a negative effect on the encapsulation responses of Spodoptera littoralis larvae towards supernumeraries of Microplitis rufiventris parasitoid. Superparasitised hosts fed on compound-free diet showed strong encapsulation reaction (ca. 40.8%) to surplus parasitoid larvae having scars of physical combat. Treated hosts exhibited a significant reduction in either capsule thickness or encapsulation rate to the excess parasitoid larvae. Even when a capsule was formed, it had a thinner haemocy tic layer than tha t of control hosts. Studies on the differential haemocyte counts showed that failure of treated larvae to encapsulate injured surplus parasitoid larvae could be attributed to the following factors: (1) disturbance in plasmatocytes-granular cells (GR) ratio, e.g. abnormal increase in GR levels possibly causing faint haemocytic reaction to injured parasitoid larva(e); (2) the parasitoid surface becoming less attractive to the granulocytes and plasmatocytes; (3) the haemocytes involved in capsule formation (granulocytes, plasmatocytes) losing their ability to spread out over the surface of parasitoid larvae; and (4) the blood cells of the treated host failing to recognise wounded larvae as foreign bodies. Reduced encapsulation capacity might be due to a secondary effect(s) of IGR treatment inducing a suppression of adhesive activity of the plasmatocytes. These results may be useful for improving our understanding of insect immune reaction and/or manipulating parasitoids activity against nonhabitual Parasitoida.

Once a minor pest, the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) has recently become a major pest of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) in Ethiopia, particularly in the northwestern region. To determine the population dynamics of the pest, field experiments were carried out at Adet and Zema in northwestern Ethiopia in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Treatments were planting dates at 15-day intervals in May, June and July and sampling was carried out weekly until crop maturity. Combined ANOVA, over seasons and locations, showed significant effects of sowing dates, seasons and locations. Pea aphid populations increased and decreased with delay in planting at Adet and Zema, respectively. At Adet, peaks of weekly counts of aphid numbers were observed in August and seasonal totals of aphids on individual planting dates increased as planting was delayed. At Zema, peaks of weekly counts of aphid numbers were observed in mid-July (1996), late August and early September (1995) and mid-September (1994); peas planted on June 16 gave the lowest seasonal totals of aphids. Natural enemies (predators and parasitoids) appeared in considerable numbers in 1996 and these tended to increase as planting date was delayed. For most planting dates and years, weekly aphid populations showed positive correlation with maximum temperature, and negative correlation with minimum temperature and relative humidity. Increasing maximum temperature promoted the buildup of aphid populations while increased minimum temperature, rainfall and relative humidity suppressed it. Grain yield increased and decreased as planting date was delayed at Adet and Zema, respectively. From these results, it is recommended that planting of field peas should take place from mid- to late June at Adet and during the first week of June at Zema to obtain higher yields; by doing so a mean of 0.32 t/ha and 0.50 t/ha higher yield was obtained, respectively.

Insects have evolved a potpourri of mechanisms for manipulating the allelochemicals that fortify their preferred host plants. A concatenation of physiological and biochemical events frequently follows the ingestion of a toxic natural product and can eventuate in a variety of fates for the compound. A particular allelochemical may be absorbed, metabolized, and sequestered, whereas the fates of concomitant natural products may be very different. Some compounds may be directly excreted in the faeces and their concentration will thus mirror that in the plant. In other cases, selective absorption and sequestration combine to biomagnify minor constituents so that the concentration of these sequestered compounds in insect tissues diners drastically from their concentrations in the host plants.

The acridid Romalea guttata is utilized in this paper as a paradigmatic insect which eclectically processes ingested allelochemicals from a wide range of host plants. This generalist herbivore is eminently suitable as a model because it feeds on plants containing a veritable pharmacopoeia of toxic compounds. The proven sequestrative potential of its defensive glands further qualifies R. guttata as an excellent candidate for determining the fates of toxic phytochemicals. An analysis of this insect's processing strategies for the compounds ingested after feeding on catnip (Nepeta cataria) reveals that for R. guttata variety is the spice of herbivorous life. The results of this investigation persuasively demonstrate that each insect species—and the phytochemical mixture that it ingests—must be regarded as a unique evolutionary case that constitutes a distinctively idiosyncratic phenomenon.

Host-plant resistance plays an important role in the insect-pest management either alone or in combination with other control methods. A number of sorghum genotypes showing varying levels of resistance to spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus Swinhoe have been identified using natural and artificial infestations. Major resistance mechanisms are antibiosis and tolerance, though some genotypes exhibit ovipositional non-preferences. There have been a number of factors involved in spotted stem borer resistance; a resistant genotype possesses either one or a combination of these traits. Progress has been made in developing borer resistant breeding lines with moderate yield and acceptable grain quality. Borer resistance is a quantitatively inherited trait governed by additive and non-additive genes. Epistatic gene effects are more pronounced under artificial borer infestation. Cytoplasmic effects appear to be present.

Spatial pattern of distribution of populations of three insect species, namely, Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida), Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) and Aphis gossypii Glov. was studied in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) at an interval of 13–15 days during July, August and September in Punjab. The populations were found to be aggregated from the beginning of season upto 25 August in jassid nymphs, 12 August in whitefly adults and the end of season in apterous aphids. Environmental heterogeneity at low population in July and innate behaviour at high population were responsible for the aggregated dispersion in each of the three homopterans. Based on these observations the appropriate number of samples required to be drawn for population studies were determined which varied with change in pest density in each case.

The infectivity and pathogenicity of three native entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis (HNI 0100 and sp-CIAT) and Steinernema (SNI 0198)) were evaluated in third instar larvae of Phyllophaga menetriesi (Blanchard) under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of 7000 and 13,000 infective juveniles per millilitre were applied to the coleopteran larval host (individuals) that had been placed in plastic cups with 40 g of sterile sand at 5.8% (w/w) moisture. The evaluations were done 5 and 10 days after treatment. It was observed that both the percentage of infectivity (74.5%, n = 247), measured in terms of percentage of penetration and the percentage of pathogenicity (10.5%, n = 247) of the three native nematodes were significantly different due to the treatments. Steinernema had the highest values of infectivity (>80%), but no pathogenicity. In contrast, the treatments with Heterorhabditis, despite having the lowest degree of infectivity (52.9%), had the highest mortality values (31.6%). Therefore, the Heterorhabditis strains were considered to be the most promising as biological control organisms within an integrated pest management programme due to their higher degree of pathogenicity. Nevertheless, different strains and species of native nematodes should be evaluated in all the developmental stages of the pest.

A method of marking tsetse flies is described based on the transfer of fluorescent pigment from marked males to females during copulation. Powder applied between the coxae of the male lodges in the scutellar groove of the female during mating. Powder persists well on males before mating and on females afterwards. Individual males can mark several females, and the marks of different males can be detected on females after multiple mating. Aspects of behaviour which may possibly be investigated using this method are described.

Three consecutive generations of Hypsipyla robusta Moore (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were reared on the McMorran–Grisdale Diet (MGD) medium. Mortality rates among the older larvae were consistently low (less than 1.0%) but high (up to 50%) in the first instar stage which was due primarily to escapism and non-feeding. Developmental period from egg to adult was not adversely affected by the artificial diet and ranged between 29 and 41 days. However, a comparison of numbers of larval instars and pupal sizes indicated that the nutritional quality of the MGD and natural food sources differed appreciably. A longterm study to evaluate the usefulness of the MGD for planned mass rearing programmes of H. robusta is recommended.

The geographical distribution and the biology of the different species of tsetse fly are closely connected with the vegetation. Any modification in the vegetation cover may therefore change, in one way or another, the dynamics of tsetse populations and, consequently, influence the transmission of trypanosamiasis. Irrigation and rural development programmes which often drastically change the natural vegetation of vast areas will therefore result in major changes in the incidence, epidemiology and epizootiology of trypanosomiasis.

Only very limited studies have been carried out on this important problem and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to make a review of this subject as the data available are very fragmentary and often relate to specific situations.

The main purpose of this article is not only to review the data and information available at present, but also to identify and stress our lack of knowledge and the need for further research.

The problems created by establishment of irrigation and rural development programmes, industrial scale plantations, irrigated cultivations, livestock rearing centres are highlighted without neglecting the sociological and medical aspects of population transfers connected with these development programmes.

The conclusions attempt to identify the research which should be carried out in the field and propose some recommendations drawing attention to both the health services and to those responsible for planning and establishing irrigation and rural development programmes.

Heliothis armigera (Hubner) completed five generations in the laboratory, as well as in the field, in a year. The first generation was completed from the first week of December to the fourth week of February, the second generation from the second week of February to first week of April. The third generation from third week of August passing through the extreme summer, the fourth generation during monsoon period and the fifth last generation from the third week of September to the fourth week of November. The seasonal variation in generation time is largely due to extreme variations in ecological factors, temperature (10–45°C), photoperiod (10–14 hr), relative humidity (15–95%) and rainfall. These factors also affect the percentage of pupation, emergence and fecundity of the female moths. Males outnumbered the females in the first, second and fifth generation. The females lived longer than males in all generations.

The development, life table and intrinsic rate of natural increase of the reduviid predator Rhynocoris fuscipes (Fabricius) on Spodoptera litura Fab., Earias vittella Fab. and Corcyra cephalonica Stainton under laboratory conditions were constructed. Fecundity, longevity and minimum developmental period of the predator were dependent on the prey diet and decreased in the order: S. litura, E. vittella and C. cephalonica. The mean number of female progeny produced over the entire period (the gross reproductive rate) was 43.0, 37.5 and 32.5 on S. litura, E. vittella and C. cephalonica respectively. The net reproductive rate (Ro), intrinsic rate of increase (rc) and weekly multiplication rate were also highest on S. litura followed by E. vittella and C. cephalonica.

A study was conducted at Katumani, Kiboko and Ithookwe, in the semi-arid Eastern Province of Kenya for four seasons (short rains 1996-long rains 1998), to confirm the major stemborers of maize, and to introduce and monitor the colonisation of Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in these stemborers. About 6750 adults of Cotesia flavipes were released at each site, from ‘release stations’, starting one week after plant emergence and repeated fortnightly up to harvest. Pre-release parasitism of the stemborers was determined, for two seasons prior to release of Co. flavipes, during the season of release and one season after the release of this parasitoid. Parasitism was assessed from developmental stages of the stemborers recovered through destructive sampling of 100 plants, starting one week after plant emergence. This was repeated weekly at Katumani, and fortnightly at Kiboko and Ithookwe until harvest. The stemborers recovered from maize were Chilo partellus, Sesamia calamistis, Cryptophlebia leucotreta and Busseola fusca in descending order of abundance, with Ch. partellus being the most widespread stemborer. Cotesia flavipes parasitised and successfully colonised Ch. partellus and S. calamistis in the three sites during the season of release and one season post-release of the parasitoid. Parasitism by Co. flavipes ranged from 7.14–25.80 %. The colonisation rate of Co. flavipes in the two major stemborers in the semi-arid Eastern Province of Kenya suggests the high potential of this parasitoid in regulating populations of stemborers that attack maize in this region.

Occurrence of mortality due to bacterial infection by a gram negative bacterium and the hymenopteran entomophagous parasite Apanteles glomeratus (L.) was observed in a natural population of Catopsilia crocale Cramer, a defoliator of the ornamental and medicinal plant Cassia alata. On regular field observation during the seasons 1980–1981 and 1981–1982, it was found that mortality due to these factors was mostly confined to the Final larval instar and the pupa of C. crocale. A direct correlation was obtained between population density of C. crocale and the number of larvae'pupae killed due to these factors. As the incidence of the hymenopteran parasite and bacteria fluctuate along with the C. crocale population, consideration of the foregoing factors as potential biological control agents for the pest population of C. crocale, is suggested.
